Lemon
The S-80 is avery comfortable and good looking veh, but it has been the most unreliable veh I have ever owned, in the last 3 years the car has been in the shop over a dozen times, and for weeks at a time. The head gasket blew at 4000 miles, the electrical system, a nightmare, the transmission does not function properly. All of this Volvo acknowleges, but they will not step up to the plate and get me out of a lease that only has 3 months remaining. My car is currently in the shop and has been for the past week and a half. I will never buy another Volvo!
Fabulous Car, When It Is Working
Exceptional performance/style for the $. Nothing else competes with it in this price range. Unfortunately, it has HORRIBLE reliability. In 18 months the following was replaced: motor mount, ABS control unit, turn signal switch, brake rotors, oxygen sensor, mass flow sensor, door trim, upper strut mount (2 times), oil return line, strut assembly, ignition switch. Parts failed about every 2 months, and the parts always had to be special ordered. I was fortunate that it was under warranty. Be very careful about buying one used.

2000 Volvo S80 T6
What a sweet, sweet car. It's responsive and a joy to drive. More than enough power. Supreme comfort. No major problems at all.
My used 2000 S80 T6 is great!
Bought certified pre-owned, and I absolutely love this car. Engineering and function are wonderful, and it's a blast to drive the T6. Highly recommend as a used car, the new ones are a bit pricey. (Better to let a rich person eat the first three years of depreciation!)
Best Car I ever owned
Our family has been buying Volvos since 1980, and this is by far the best one yet. Fast, comfortable, and great sound system.
Unreliable Volvo
We have had this car for two years. In that span, it has broken 15 times, for items such as suspension, electrical, mechanical and ignition.
Volvo S80
Like the car, little slow on exceration. A little noisy on Freeway. Great Space and comfort...
Volvo S80 loves Mechanic more than me!
This is my first and last Volvo, I have driven it 60k miles. It's comfortable and attractive to look at, but gee, I am disappointed in the build and mechanical quality. After all the front suspension work (recall) the car scares me on the highway. I hate the surge when the AC switches on and off, the door locks sound like a sick power drill, and the car rattles like an 80's American car. I live with it all, but for $35K I expected a lot more! Since the warranty ended it has cost me 3K to keep up with it. I've tried to trade it but dealers price it way below trade in value and then run away - they don't want it in thier used inventory either!
Prepare Yourself :-(
Had Honda's my whole life and wanted to move up. Mistake. Great car if you can get it cheap and know a Volvo technician. Currently at 68K miles. Transmission replaced at 52K. Battery died during that time. Needs new rotors ($$$) each 40K miles. Replaced throttle control unit and sensor. Countless new lightbulbs. Replaced ignition antenna. Volvo Service at Dealerships are great......they have to be! READ EDMUNDS MAINTENANCE GUIDE for TSBs!!! Next car will be a Honda.
Fabulous Car
I've had my 2000 Volvo S80 T6 for almost five years now and love it (my 1999 was plagued with problems and at the dealer's most of the time). It's the most comfortable car I've owned, and drives and handles like a dream. I know there have been problems so I purchased the extended warranty as I plan to keep the car for at least seven years. My car has been relatively problem-free except for replacing the transmission while under the original warranty--also replacing the "chirping" glove box. The service department at Tacoma Volvo has provided me with outstanding service.
