It depends.....
I just bought my 2004 Touareg a few months back. Having read the posts from people, it does really depend how you want to view the reliability of this car. The interior is wonderful, the exterior looks very sleek. The handling in general is very good, except when you want to accelerate. It tends to take a while. Right now my car is having it's ignition coil replaced, nothing super big. My advice is to buy a used or 'pre-loved' Touareg. Let the previous owners deal with the issues and recalls while I soak up the benefits. Granted I haven't yet had to replace the tires or even had an oil change, so I'm sure my time will come. Still, it was worth my money.
Amazing Vehicle
Love this Vehicle! I see a lot of bad reviews but honestly if you take good care of your car then you won't have problems! Do not buy this vehicle if your money is tight because repairs can be expensive. I have had no trouble with my touareg I LOVE IT!! Super sporty & you feel totally in control when you drive it also very safe! I have never been stranded! JUST KEEP UP WITH OIL CHANGES & REGULAR MAINTENANCE and trust me you'll be fine!

Like a pretty woman - with serious mental issues
Bought this used about 2 months ago - 79k, $5500.. It seemed like a great deal for a $35k suv. Acceleration / Transmission seem to not "communicate" with each other. I do not know if it wants to go or slow down. There is a disconnect between what the driver whats to do, and what the car actually does. I took it in for a tune up- as i do w/ all my used cars. $500- not too bad. Then some drive shaft support broke, $500 more. Ok- I usually plan on putting double into what I pay for a used car- hey, they are used.. but, little things are starting to pop up. Like mentioned by other users. This reminds me of my old BMW X5 - MONEY PIT waiting to happen. I will probably try to broom it onto some other unsuspecting person, that did not do their homework, like i did not do mine. I think I an just going to stick with Subarus now.. Well built, and few issues.

Total Electrical Failure!
I purchased an off-lease VW Touareg that was VW certified, drove well for 1 year then electrical problems started. Truck would just die without any lights, etc being on. Since then it has been in and out of Volkswagen for complete electrical failure, even VW doesn't know how to fix it. They claimed it was after-market wiring which is strange because it was a certified used VW. Anyone looking to buy a used Touareg don't do it you will never be able to drive it and pay almost more than the car is worth fixing it!
Don't buy a Touareg!
This car has fuel line issues and recalls for fire hazard. NIGHTMARE electrical system and ridiculous anti-theft! Anyone who steals this POS would bring that back! I am only reviewing this car to SAVE YOU an absurd amount of tears and frustration!!! Volkswagens are the worst cars to buy. Save yourself...buy anything GM like I used to til I had a VERY temporary brain-art.
