Touareg is a lemon
The first week I had the SUV the electronic instruments went out. It took VW a week to get the new computer in. Since then they had to replace the stepper motor to control the 4 wheel drive. The stepper motor had to be ordered and that took a week. All tires had to be replace because of alignment problems. Door handles had to be replaced. The horn had to be replaces. The rear window wipers did not work.
a Lemon
I found it was fun to drive. Very nice interior, I was very happy with the car. Started having problems with suspension, wheel bearings, etc. Total of days in the dealership has equaled approx. 4 months. Egineers from volkswagen have not been able to fix problem. I left the car in the dealership to fix since July 22, 2004, still in the dealership; they have not been able to fix. It is my understanding they had two other cars with the same problem. I am in the process of returning under the "Lemon Law".

Niggles
Overall I am pleased with the Touareg, although I still haven't figured out why VW have adopted the curious pronunciation of the name for the US market. Complaints: After less than 3000 miles the "step up" motor needed replacing (diff. problem) didn't they launch this car in Europe some time ago? Why are there still problems? 2nd key should set the driver's seat to the 2nd drivers position, it doesn't. 7 months later one of the largest automakers is "working on it." Sure! The Homelink is impossible to program, same answer. The windshield mists up if the inside and outside temps are too disparate. Why on earth isn't the diesel going to be available in CA?
Wish I never bought
Problems with locking on rear hatch. I have it that it should be unlocked with other doors...sometime is, sometimes not. Back passanger do sticks. Auto button sets temp to 72, not where you have it set. Air always blows on windshield even if redirected...causes condensation at night, morning, and rainy days. Wheel skweek. Volkswagen cannot figure out alignment problem on vehicle.
Drivers Wanted
All VWs are cars for Drivers. Touareg is no exception. One needs a Driving skill and focus to appreciate this car. The V8 is so powerful that a gentle but precise push on gas in needed to roll it from stop (the so- called "hesitation" problem). The ride is so quiet that air is heard flowing off vents. And one needs to buckle up before switching the ignition and fix tire pressure between weather seasons. These pretty much cover for the "lemon" issues. Then just Drive! This Car is amazing to Drive!
