You should know the 2 wheel drive r line with those wide flat tires is worthless in snow, regardless what the sales person says. Also mine has a whistle above 60 in the cabin. It tracks great going 90 down the interstate and has no understeer on exit ramps. I’m 247 6’5” and have plenty of room with room for my long legged kids behind me. The seat are FIRM. Car is averaging 27.4 mpg which is considering I drive hammer down. Over all it’s fun to drive, just buy the all wheel drive model if you live where the white stuff flies.

Real nice SUV, far better than the on-line reviews

I am a car guy, always have been. I was looking for a AWD SUV that looked great, performed well and especially fit my 6'6" body. I am single, no kids at home and I wanted a mid-sized SUV not a large land yacht. I had a $40,000 budget. I read all the reviews and tried all of the most popular and decided on this 2021 Tiguan SE R-Line Black. The SE had all the features I wanted (with the exception of the rain sensored wipers) with nonne of the things I didn't need (navigation, leather seats, third row seating) I'm 6'6". The Tiguan was one of a small few that allowed me to enter and exit easily. I like the clean lines of the exterior where there are no bumps and bulges and the vehicle doesn't look like something out of a science fiction movie. I like the understated interior where the fit and finish is great, things are where they are supposed to be and their use is intuitive and doesn't take a 1000 page manual to set it up for my preferences. Most reviewers call the looks boring, I find it very pleasing, an understated elegance without much of the junk that appeals to a younger demographic. Performance has been criticized but I find it pretty good and acceptable for what I need.I love great sports cars and muscle cars but this is not what I need in an SUV. I don't need neck snapping acceleration like a Porsche , I need something that can get up to highway speeds quickly, a vehicle that can handle the hills and back roads and the weather here in New England. The Tiguan does this very well. It is very smooth and quiet on the highway and handles remarkably well on the back, twisty roads. I also like that you don't see hundreds of them on a daily commute, it is nicely unique and in my opinion a great looking vehicle that is fun to drive. If I wanted the exhilaration of a sports car, I would buy a Corvette or a Porsche 911. This Tiguan is what I wanted in an SUV at a very good price. 7 months since purchase: I have driven or ridden in many of the vehicles in this category and I still find the Tiguan to be the right SUV for me. It is more spacious, I like the way that the seats wrap around and hug my body. It is a great deal of fun in Sport mode when whipping around twisty roads or city streets but Normal is where I spend most of the time driving because it offers a nice level of performance while still getting me around 23 mpg overall. Econo Mode turns the vehicle into a real slug and I just won't waste my time. I needed to move my girlfriend since I bought the vehicle and I was very impressed with the amount of stuff that you can fit in this car. We moved everything except her bed and couches. The car looks great, performs very well and has exceeded my expectations in just about every way. One additional note: the 4motion works great in snow BUT the 20 inch wheels with the Hankook tires on the R Line Black are somewhat limited. They will get you there but you need to pay attention and take severe weather very seriously. They look fantastic but just not the best.

I just purchased a 2021 R Line Black SE and it is a very sharp looking mid sized SUV. More roomy than may be expected, and interior is very sharp too. Some say boring but to me it is clean and efficient. Well thought out. Tech is very user friendly. Decent power (more than sufficient) and great handling. Panoramic moon roof a great addition. Appearance is a personal thing, but this one really suits me, and the performance hits the mark too. Highly recommend!

This is my 3rd Tiguan, 2011 GTI on stilts then a 2019 SE with 3rd row and now this 2021 SE Rline. I saw this car in a parking lot and decided I wanted one so bad that I traded the 19 with 15k miles for it. The is definitely a head turner. Platinum grey, the aggressive front end with 20 inch black wheels, blacked out trims and the best part, the bezel less rear view mirror. So far I love everything about this SUV, it rides very comfortable for being on 20s and now regular gas is OK. I always ran premium gas. I am not concerned too much about it being 184HP. It picks up and move. This is not about the fastest 0-60 times its about riding in comfort and enjoying the car. Some minor annoyances is the auto light that turn on if a bird flies over the sensor. It is way to sensitive just like the 2019 I had. Secondly would it break VWs bank to put LED headlights on the R Line at least. I had a LED kit added on the 19 with no issues and will add one the 2021 as well. I really love the way this feels and drives, it's sporty. The way I drive at times gas mileage is not an issue. I choose this over a 2021 QX50 which was a looker but when it opens up it's mouth is sounds like a leaf blower getting louder as you press the trigger. That CVT really sucks. So far I am not disappointed and will definitely get another VW once this lease is up.

Recently purchased a car I wanted, as opposed to the car that fit my family and lifestyle. Kids have their own car, now Mama has one she loves too!! It was between a Mazda Cx-5 and Delilah. She won hands down. She's a little longer has a small 3rd row seat for those few and far between days when I have to be the mom mobile again. Panoramic sunroof and all of the bells and whistles!! I love love love her!!

I have a 2021 Tiguan SE 4motion with a 3rd. Row seat, let me start by saying it’s a solid car, spacious, very comfortable on long trips for all occupants except the Driver ! Gas mileage is great I am getting 33 mpg on highway driving 25 city, the air condition is great, the back seat vents make a big different. Road noise is almost minimal. A panoramic room was a must for me, but with Texas heat I wished if I didn’t get it. I am not a racer but the engine is little underpowered 184 horse power is definitely not enough for acceleration, but on the Highway it’s good for passing other cars. The things that I love about Tiguan: 1- Stability 2- Gas mileage, you definitely get 35 mpg with cruise control at speed 65 mile per hour. 3- spacious 4- plenty of legroom front and back seat only, 3rd row forget it. 5- very comfortable seats, please read note #6 on the things I don’t like. 6- Clear front, side, and rear views The things that I don’t like in the 2021 Tiguan. 1- there is NO end call button on the steering wheel ( my 2020 Passat has it ). 2- mine came with an extended remote engine start, it is an extra device beside the 2 key fob, so you have to carry the remote start device plus the key FOB. My Passat has a remote start button on both the key fobs. 3- if the air condition is on Auto mode, you will not be able to close the recirculating air, as soon as you switch off the recirculating air the air condition goes to manual. My 2020 Passat you can close it in the auto mode. 4- the engine is underpower for initial acceleration, I believe 30-40 extra horse power will be perfect. 5- the 3rd. Row seat is for small kids during city driving, but definitely not a road trips, as for me I don’t care because I will never need to use the 3rd row seats. 6- PLEASE PAY ATTENTION to NO.6, I am 5ft 10 in. I did a 15 hours road trip the arm rests are NOT comfortable at all, the center console is more to the back so barely my elbow can rest, as of the driver door arm rest is it low, so you will not be able to rest your left arm on it. Unfortunately I did not notice it on my test drive because it is a deal breaker for me. Now I am driving it with 2 pillows on the right and the left to rest my arms. If you are fine with NO.6 go ahead and buy the car, I do recommend VW Tiguan.

I have had this car for about 6 months and it is currently in the service department for the 4th time already. The oil sensor went out after a month, all the buttons on the drivers door consul went out at the same time a month later, low oil level warnings kept showing up even though it was not due for an oil change for another $5k, and now recently the air conditioning in the vehicle stopped working. You can hear the fans going but nothing comes out of the vents. Every once in a while it blows cold air and then it just stops. For having this car for only 6 months and it being in the service department already 4 times it makes me want to get rid of this car as soon as possible. These are not major items but just last week the car was at the dealership for 2 days and the day after we got it back and left for a road trip for a few days the A/C went out immediately. So a week later it is back at the dealership. This car was bought brand new. I love the way it looks from the exterior and the interior of the vehicle is comfortable but beware of these issues. I regret purchasing this vehicle and will be contacting VW to take care of this.

Inventory shortages worked to my benefit. I was looking to trade from a 2016 Jetta to a 2021 Jetta but they didn't have what I was looking for, Saw the Taos and liked it but since its a new model there were no good incentives on it but then I saw this, the 2021 Tiguan R-Line Black and I feel in love with it. I'd thought about a Tiguan but I'd see one and think "no way", then I'd see one and think "hey that looks good". Turns out the ones that looked good were the sportier looking R-Line. I instantly knew this was the vehicle for me, it had everything I wanted plus a whole lot more. Fun to drive, drop it into "Sport" mode and it provides the pickup you need. The only knock on it and keeping it from being 5 stars is the stereo, volume is way too low at max volume, if not for that it would be a 5.

Engine/Transmission Problems

Mine has been giving me nothing but problems. The transmission takes forever to work. I step my foot on the pedal, completely to the floor, the car take 6 seconds for it to catch and go anywhere. Then, the car bolts, no consistancy. The sensors are really annoying. Be prepared to get used to the car stopping on you when pulling out of driveways. The car also revs really high and has a noisy engine. Not worth the money. The car looks beautiful, I wished it actually preformed.

Traded a 2013 Lincoln MKX for the Tiguan SEL 4 motion... More responsive, better ride, quiet, solid, and more seat and leg room in front and back seats. Approximately 20% more fuel efficient around town and about 30% more hwy. The VW was significantly less expensive than the our similarly equiped Lincoln less A/C option in the seats.

"Tiggy likes to get Jiggy"

SE R Line is nice and roomy for it's size. Cargo space is the BEST for the SUV size!!! The third row is only used in an emergency. The good thing is the 2nd row adjusts forward to allow a little bit more room for the poor person having to ride back there. We've owned the car for 9 months and have used the third row twice. Again, in a pinch and not for a long distance. For some reason the third row flooring is higher than the front and second row which makes the leg space terrible. C'mon VW , you can do better to make anyone who rides in the third row not feel like they're on punishment. Also, the fuel economy is NOT good. VW needs to do better under the hood to improve fuel efficiency. The SE R Line has bigger wheels which means a bumpier ride. If you choose look over ride, stick with the bigger wheels. If you like a smoother ride go with an SE which has 19in wheels. Some interior key features that could use improvement are the following: 1) the stereo sound system needs improvement (stereo volume is way too low at max volume) 2) panoramic moon roof is a bonus, but VW needs to make the cover SPF proof. I live in Florida and when the sun is directly overhead the headspace gets hot due to the panoramic sunroof (the shade that covers it, is mesh-like material) An easy fix would be to add a thicker SPF fabric or make it like a sun shade cover. 3) lacks some ambient lighting throughout the SUV. 4) trunk could really use better lighting than ONE little halogen tucked away in the trunk's side compartment (driver rear trunk compartment). It illuminates a very small area and pretty much nothing when the trunk is loaded. Maybe if that little light was an LED light you could actually see in the dark or an overhead LED light would improve visibility greatly when loading and unloading in the dark!! Makes no sense. Lastly, missing the interior rearview mirror with the modern frameless design, electronic compass, home link and auto-dimming functionality!! Other than that this small SUV is fun to drive. The SE R Line looks super sporty, handles well and is a solid built Suv.

Replaced a Jeep Compass with a 2021 Tiguan SE 4Motion. I must say I liked the Compass but this car is better all around. I tested a Subaru Outback and Forester, Hyundai Tucson and the Toyota RAV4 and a BMW X3. The beemer won out but the Tiguan came home with me. It's just a bit more refined then the Forrester's controls and quality of ride. Not a big difference, but just enough to notice. Same with the Hyundai but surprisingly the Tiguan beat out the RAV4 outright. Just a better car this time around. If I had to give negatives I would say the gas mileage could be 1 or 2 miles better the toyota gets 2 miles better MPG. BUT will accept a more reliable engine for it. And the Cruise Control is too easy to disable. Easy to turn back on but easy to disable if you turn the Adaptive Cruise Control off. Get the All Wheel Drive 4Motion. Works pretty good in heavy gravel with the computerized traction controls.

Traded an end of lease 2018 Acura Base for the Tiguan. Planned on just getting another RDX, but the base RDX doesn’t really have all the modern safety features one would expect (blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, etc.). The other SUVs in this class were either silly expensive of had ugly styling; i.e. a box with headlights and taillights stuck on the corners line warts. We leased the Tiguan and were fairly satisfied (after getting used to the spartan German interior), until the auto start function began to malfunction. We gave up when the car would not restart at a busy intersection, all the warning lights came on, with a near miss collision as it rolled down a hill into oncoming traffic. The dealer agreed that there were 34 faults in the computer, but they couldn’t reproduce the issue. Their suggestion? Turn off the auto start function. Now my wife is nearly paranoid she’ll forget and will end up with a dead car or collision.

The R-line is stylish, fast, and roomy. Very smooth ride. I've had it for a few months, but unfortunately, this car just isn't for me. I feel like there should be a bit more functionality or convenience for the price. The car has automatic stop/start which can only be turned off manually each time you start the engine (you get used to it though). Crowded console area with tiny storage compartment, but I do love the oversized bottle holders in the doors. Touch screen display will occasionally restart itself while driving. Acceleration can be jumpy when you take off, but that's just the engine. I live in Florida, and when the sun is directly overhead, the headspace gets hot due to the panoramic sunroof (the shade that covers it is a mesh-like material). After moving from a CR-V, I think I just prefer some function over fashion.

Faulty Infotainment

YDKitchener, 01/07/2022
2021 Volkswagen Tiguan SE 4dr SUV (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
2 of 6 people found this review helpful

My rating is based on buying a new 2021 Tiguan and subsequent treatment we received as problem started to appear in Tiguan's infotainment system. We bought the vehicle in September 2021 and after a few weeks, the infotainment started giving problems (i.e. won't turn on instantly and would go off/on). Since then we made 4-5 appointments but the issue remains. VW Waterloo provided us with a loaner on third appointment as they were waiting for a new part to come. However, the problem remains even though they replaced the part. Now we have been told that software needs to be updated and they don't know when that will happen. The frustrating thing is that they asked us to return the loaner car and provided with a rental sedan car. I have never driven a sedan before and informed VW Waterloo, however, they said either we had to accept sedan or drive Tiguan with malfunctioning infotainment. So frustrating. Why can't they provide with similar size of car? Whose fault is that the brand new car developed issues which have not been resolved despite several visits?

Complete Lemon

With respect to the great Dale Bernbach ad calling the Beetle a lemon on the rare occasion one failed a comprehensive set of inspections, our new 2021 162 R-Line must have been assembled by the lads after a beer swilling Octoberfest lunch in the VW canteen whilst the quality control team was at the local pub enjoying barmaids dancing for bratwurst. The entire car rattles more than a Fisher Price toy. And more than any baby could tolerate. The stereo and speakers come with their own contribution to percussion encouraging the doors ( not the Jim Morrison variety ) to deliver their own tone deaf performance, off the beat. Car play exits regularly to play somewhere else. The rain sensing wipers occasionally do. Just before bursting into a fit of excitement that scares off the clouds, the rain and with a crescendo of cacophonic whumps attempts to remove the glass, windscreen and threaten the passengers inside the cabin. Forget apex’s and driving through corners if the lane assist remains engaged. With a ferocious shove it will remind you driving anywhere other than the middle of the road is upsetting the CPU, irrespective of camber, speed, balance or attitude, road conditions and the judgement of a driver who has done the Ring under 8 seconds. The road feel is good however. Just like our rally 911 and Lotus 7, every crack, pebble and undulation in the road is sent straight to your seat as well as the cabin, trims, wiring loom, connectors and eyeballs in the pursuit of lightness and removal of sound deadening. In 12 weeks of ownership, VW has had it for 4. They admit the issues all exist and further admit they can’t find solutions to rectify them. They’ve claimed to have made galant efforts to escalate the issues somewhere upstairs. Whilst the lip service has been heart warming, the results have not. Without malice, but with deep concern for anyone considering this model of car, the only way we could describe the vehicle technically, is a COMPLETE LEMON.

Vastly Underwhelming

This vehicle desperately needs a beefier engine in order to haul its 5000 pounds around without strain. The turbo doesn’t help much either. In fact the engine lag is a huge nuisance. Handling is light and the vehicle’s overall road manners are numb. The touch screen controls are maddening. The interior fit and finish is mediocre at best and the doors have far too much plastic. UPDATE: I have had the Tiguan for nearly 6 months. My original review still stands. Much room for improvement everywhere.

Great To Be In A German Car Again!

I was holding out for an EV that would like cold weather and give me a couple trips to Tahoe. Then I realized that I am not rich and decided a 35k car was smarter than a 65k car. Yes, I’m a technology slut. I was driving a 2009 Highlander with a leaky sunroof, mildew smell, back wiper failing, and horn/alarm randomly blaring at 2:30 in the morning. Averaging 18 mpg and staring down the barrel of a hybrid battery replacement as I crossed 200,000 miles. The steering was numb and the CVT awful. I found a low mileage (10k) 2021 Tiguan SEL that was a dealer service loaner. With the exception of Missing LED headlights, it had all the tech I was looking for. I did not want a car with the Etch-A-Sketch screen bolted onto the dash (eg Q5). I did not want a car with all the fake body creases and fake vents. And I did not want a 3d row seat and found one without it. Recently got a service bulletin for OCU update so took it to dealer. Now it gets OTA software updates! Engine: Well it’s not as peppy as my A4 was, but at this point in my life I just need basic transportation. I have driven it to Tahoe from sea level and cruise at 80-85. It can be a little jerky-jerky going to the market but livable. I should point out it has the drive select wheel, so I could put it in Sport mode but typically opt for Eco. Once on the road I don’t notice any engine hesitation. The steering actually has some feel - not quite like our 7-speed Golf manual, but WAY more steering response than the Toyota or some EV with one gear. Obviously if I want to shift it I have the 8-speed Tiptronic. Mileage: The Highlander Hybrid 6 cyl would do 17 mpg up to Tahoe and 24 mpg coming down the hill. The Tiguan is doing 24 mpg up the hill and 40 mpg down the hill. So now I can actually make 2 trips to Tahoe without a fill up. That’s a win for my wallet. Build: No complaints about the build. Finally I am back to doors that close with a “clunk” and don’t feel hollow. I feel way more safe in this car, and appreciate the active safety tech. Comparison: I feel like the Highlander was SUV, but I feel the Tiguan is more like a competitor to Subaru Outback. I don’t need a ladder to clean the roof. As I was done with Japanese cars, and could not afford the high end German cars and cannot afford a Porsche Taycan, this purchase worked out really well for me.

This is my first SUV. I have enjoyed it thus far except for one problem for me. I moved and drove the car from Huntsville,Alabama to St. Petersburg, Florida. The seat leaves much to be desired. I have a bad back and I drove the 11 hours in 2 days. I feel the seat is very cheaply made. I have to trade this car in becasue the seats to me are not co fortable at all. I have driven the VW for the past 10 years. But the seat in this vehicle is not supportive enough for ones back and long drives. The best VW I have ever driven was the VW CC.

Classic design with modern features

I've been looking at cars for over a year as I was trying to find the ONE. I thought I was going to settle with a certified 2019 BMW X3, I loved how it drove and what it felt like, however, wasn't a fan of the exterior design and didn't want to see the value of my car plummet 2 years after purchase. THEN, I came across a 2021 certified pre-owned Tiguan with less than 20k miles on it, that was $10,000 cheaper than the X3. I decided to take it for a test drive and I knew I found the one. What I liked about the Tiguan: simple, classic not-cheesy-looking exterior and interior design. Optional all-wheel drive, modern tech, comfortable ride, and decent fuel efficiency for its size. I love that Volkswagen-made vehicles don't blend in with other automakers - it seems like all newer cars are made by the same designers (Toyota, BMW, Nissan, Honda, you name it - they all look very similar). I am yet to discover it's true reliability over the years, but I did purchase an additional warranty for 10 years/85k miles. So far it's been great.

I Had a 2021 tiguan as a rental for a week in Florida. I live in canada and own a 2022 f150 hybrid. The tiguan had lots of torque and get-up-and-go. Comfortable vehicle and lots of space for its size. Great fuel efficiency! I found it to be a great little car, and if I didn't need a truck, I would consider buying this. Overall, as I said, great little rig, would recommend this vehicle if you are looking for a vehicle of this class

Admittedly, the performance from the factory was subpar. However, as an avid VW enthusiast I already knew what performance modifications were available in the aftermarket. For only a few hundred dollars, I had an ECU flash (GoAPR), added a cold air intake and now put down well over 275hp / 300 tq. Because it's so lightweight, I've surprised a lot of drivers who assumed it would be slow. The interior is nice - not quite as elegant as my wife's Audi, but has nice technology. My only true complaint are the seats - for long drives they make my rear numb as they are way too firm. Otherwise, this is a great vehicle, with plenty of room in the back, decent gas mileage (avg 21mpg) and surprising performance (and reliability) when modified.

...I am surprised that review(s) don't pinpoint the turbo's kick @ highway speeds. A pleasant experience when needed; not quite the G-Force of a Q5, but never fails to deliver and excite!

I bought my 2021 tiguan this pasr September 2021. Within 500km it needed an engine change. Within 4000km it had a duel line leak badly. Its had several sensor and alugnment issues as well. VW refuses to admit it's a lemon so I'm trading it in for a reliable Jeep.
