The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan impresses with its high-tech cabin and premium materials, both of which rank high in the ever-growing field of compact three-row SUVs. It doesn't falter in many areas, but its drawbacks — a thirsty engine and slow-to-react transmission — keep it from true greatness.

Cons
- Subpar acceleration and responsiveness
- Ranks low in fuel economy for the class
- Optional larger wheels make for a bumpy ride
What's new

- Part of the second Tiguan generation introduced for 2018
Overview
The Volkswagen Tiguan belongs to a rare breed of compact crossovers that also offer a third row of seats. Only the Kia Sorento, Mitsubishi Outlander and Dodge Journey can say the same. There's a reason for that: Packing up to seven passengers in a small crossover is no easy feat. The VW Tiguan, though, provides impressive space — provided only children occupy the third row.

The Tiguan also has an impressive batch of clever tech features, which are easy to use, and a wealth of driving assistance aids. But this is not a driver's car — its turbocharged engine lacks both performance and fuel economy ratings worth gushing over. Changes are minor for the 2021 model year, leaving the Tiguan as a tech-forward, classy crossover hampered by its lackluster feel on the road. If the third row of seats is little more than a nice-to-have feature, take a look at the two-row Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5 or Subaru Forester.
Edmunds Expert Rating
edmunds TESTED
by the Edmunds Experts
Average
7.3
out of 10
We drove the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
6/10
How does the Tiguan drive? On the performance front, the Tiguan underdelivers by the segment's already low bar. Most of the blame lies with the clunky, unresponsive transmission. A 0-60 mph acceleration time of 9.5 seconds is slow for the class. Acceleration is lethargic at partial throttle, especially when taking off from a stop. Making an unprotected left turn requires planning well ahead.
Handling is also disappointing. The Tiguan is OK as long as you don't push too hard, but go around a tight turn and you'll feel a lot of body roll. If you enjoy more spirited driving, it's not the ideal vehicle. Competitors such as the Toyota RAV4 and the Mazda CX-5 do a better job of maintaining composure.

Comfort
8/10
How comfortable is the Tiguan? The Tiguan places a high priority on comfort, judging by the seats and overall pleasant ride. (Lower trim levels have smaller wheels, translating to a cushier ride over bad roads.) The third row is tight, but those up front are treated to well-bolstered and supportive seats. Second-row passengers get adjustable seatbacks, a boon for taller occupants.
Wind noise is minimal, and road noise is only apparent on atypical road surfaces (such as when traveling over train tracks or hitting bumps). The engine is quiet while cruising, but the transmission's odd shifting behavior might cause drivers to wring out the engine to get up to speed. The engine gets vocal above 2,000 rpm, and you'll hear a fair amount of turbocharger whooshing.

Interior
8/10
How’s the interior? As one of few three-row small SUVs, the Tiguan is unsurprisingly all about space and utility. There's an abundance of room in the first and second rows, though the third row is only suitable for kids. The large door openings make getting in and out relatively hassle-free, even for third-row occupants. Visibility is excellent thanks to large windows and small pillars.
It might take some time to get used to the instrument panel's many features and controls. You could find the layout of the steering wheel's cruise control buttons and the ones controlling the SEL's digital instrument panel confusing, for example. Our staff was split over its intuitiveness.

Technology
7.5/10
How’s the tech? The infotainment system is one of the best in the segment, and the premium Fender audio system is also quite good. All models come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration.
VW offers a lot of advanced driving aids on the Tiguan, but they don't feel fully baked. The adaptive cruise system is late to recognize cars merging into your lane and slow to react to the car in front leaving the lane. We also experienced some unwarranted inputs from the lane-keeping assist system in our test vehicle.

Storage
8/10
How’s the storage? There's plenty of room behind the Tiguan's second row to store several large suitcases. Room behind the third row is tight but better than what other compact three-row SUVs offer. You must also remove the cargo cover if the third row is raised.
A sliding second row and deep pockets near the hatch door make this space more versatile. The Tiguan offers lots of places to store small items, even in the third row. The front doors can fit two water bottles. A tray underneath the center console makes up for a relatively small bin underneath the armrest.

Fuel Economy
6/10
How’s the fuel economy? The all-wheel-drive Tiguan is rated at 24 mpg combined. It achieved 25.7 mpg on our 115-mile evaluation route, which is about what we'd expect. That said, the Tiguan is thirstier than rivals with base engines and even some competitors with upgraded engines.
Value
6.5/10
Is the Tiguan a good value? Build quality appears nice on the surface, but we were less than impressed with several rattles on our test vehicle, which showed just 6,000 miles on the odometer. A high price and below-average fuel economy translate to higher running costs for Tiguan owners. VW reduced its warranty for 2020, but it is still better than what most other automakers offer.
Wildcard
7/10
The Tiguan comes across as a bit more upscale than competing small crossovers. The tech, premium materials and handsome design help it stand out in a huge segment. But those qualities are somewhat undone by the Tiguan's lackluster driving experience. It's slow, clunky and dull, though it's relatively quiet and comfortable to sit in.

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan trim level differences
The 2021 Tiguan is available in five trim levels: S, SE, SE R-Line Black, SEL and SEL Premium R-Line. All models are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (184 horsepower, 221 lb-ft of torque) paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. A third row of seats is standard on front-wheel-drive models and optional on all-wheel-drive versions. Compare the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan trim levels in-depth.
Which Tiguan trim does Edmunds recommend?
Higher trims of the Tiguan become very flashy very fast, so we like the SE and its modest yet convenient standard features. With it, you'll get upgraded cabin materials plus heated front seats for added comfort. We especially like the technology included, such as abundant USB ports and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on an 8-inch touchscreen.

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan SE R-Line Black 4dr SUV (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
You should know the 2 wheel drive r line with those wide flat tires is worthless in snow, regardless what the sales person says. Also mine has a whistle above 60 in the cabin. It tracks great going 90 down the interstate and has no understeer on exit ramps. I’m 247 6’5” and have plenty of room with room for my long legged kids behind me. The seat are FIRM. Car is averaging 27.4 mpg which … is considering I drive hammer down. Over all it’s fun to drive, just buy the all wheel drive model if you live where the white stuff flies.
Real nice SUV, far better than the on-line reviews

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan SE R-Line Black 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
I am a car guy, always have been. I was looking for a AWD SUV that looked great, performed well and especially fit my 6'6" body. I am single, no kids at home and I wanted a mid-sized SUV not a large land yacht. I had a $40,000 budget. I read all the reviews and tried all of the most popular and decided on this 2021 Tiguan SE R-Line Black. The SE had all the features I wanted (with … the exception of the rain sensored wipers) with nonne of the things I didn't need (navigation, leather seats, third row seating) I'm 6'6". The Tiguan was one of a small few that allowed me to enter and exit easily. I like the clean lines of the exterior where there are no bumps and bulges and the vehicle doesn't look like something out of a science fiction movie. I like the understated interior where the fit and finish is great, things are where they are supposed to be and their use is intuitive and doesn't take a 1000 page manual to set it up for my preferences. Most reviewers call the looks boring, I find it very pleasing, an understated elegance without much of the junk that appeals to a younger demographic. Performance has been criticized but I find it pretty good and acceptable for what I need.I love great sports cars and muscle cars but this is not what I need in an SUV. I don't need neck snapping acceleration like a Porsche , I need something that can get up to highway speeds quickly, a vehicle that can handle the hills and back roads and the weather here in New England. The Tiguan does this very well. It is very smooth and quiet on the highway and handles remarkably well on the back, twisty roads. I also like that you don't see hundreds of them on a daily commute, it is nicely unique and in my opinion a great looking vehicle that is fun to drive. If I wanted the exhilaration of a sports car, I would buy a Corvette or a Porsche 911. This Tiguan is what I wanted in an SUV at a very good price.
7 months since purchase: I have driven or ridden in many of the vehicles in this category and I still find the Tiguan to be the right SUV for me. It is more spacious, I like the way that the seats wrap around and hug my body. It is a great deal of fun in Sport mode when whipping around twisty roads or city streets but Normal is where I spend most of the time driving because it offers a nice level of performance while still getting me around 23 mpg overall. Econo Mode turns the vehicle into a real slug and I just won't waste my time. I needed to move my girlfriend since I bought the vehicle and I was very impressed with the amount of stuff that you can fit in this car. We moved everything except her bed and couches. The car looks great, performs very well and has exceeded my expectations in just about every way. One additional note: the 4motion works great in snow BUT the 20 inch wheels with the Hankook tires on the R Line Black are somewhat limited. They will get you there but you need to pay attention and take severe weather very seriously. They look fantastic but just not the best.
Perfect fit for me

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan SE R-Line Black 4dr SUV (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
I just purchased a 2021 R Line Black SE and it is a very sharp looking mid sized SUV. More roomy than may be expected, and interior is very sharp too. Some say boring but to me it is clean and efficient. Well thought out. Tech is very user friendly. Decent power (more than sufficient) and great handling. Panoramic moon roof a great addition. Appearance is a personal thing, but this … one really suits me, and the performance hits the mark too. Highly recommend!
This Tig is sexy and it knows it

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan SE R-Line Black 4dr SUV (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
This is my 3rd Tiguan, 2011 GTI on stilts then a 2019 SE with 3rd row and now this 2021 SE Rline.
I saw this car in a parking lot and decided I wanted one so bad that I traded the 19 with 15k miles for it.
The is definitely a head turner. Platinum grey, the aggressive front end with 20 inch black wheels, blacked out trims and the best part, the bezel less rear view mirror. So far I … love everything about this SUV, it rides very comfortable for being on 20s and now regular gas is OK. I always ran premium gas.
I am not concerned too much about it being 184HP. It picks up and move. This is not about the fastest 0-60 times its about riding in comfort and enjoying the car.
Some minor annoyances is the auto light that turn on if a bird flies over the sensor. It is way to sensitive just like the 2019 I had. Secondly would it break VWs bank to put LED headlights on the R Line at least. I had a LED kit added on the 19 with no issues and will add one the 2021 as well.
I really love the way this feels and drives, it's sporty. The way I drive at times gas mileage is not an issue.
I choose this over a 2021 QX50 which was a looker but when it opens up it's mouth is sounds like a leaf blower getting louder as you press the trigger. That CVT really sucks.
So far I am not disappointed and will definitely get another VW once this lease is up.
