Underrated Beauty

Vehicle performs better than I expected. Fuel consumption is above average; Japanese brands and smaller counterparts are overrated compared with this sedan.

A nice ride.....

I bought this Passat (Wolfsburg Ed.), previously owned (it had 23K miles on it, so it was driven). It now has 28K miles, so I've driven it and can now give this review. I find it a great pleasure to drive. It's very smooth ride is luxurious but not over the top soft, it does have great road feel. The 2.0L turbo, accelerates decently and you can merge onto the fwy. pretty effortlessly. The tranny (in auto mode) does slightly struggle finding the gears up thru 3rd, then moves on nicely. It's not so much a delay, than it is a choppiness of shifting. Not major but slight, you do notice it but it's not obtrusive. The tranny in sport/DSG mode is much smoother, I use it often. The seating is abundant and I easily fit 5 comfortably. The sight-lines out the vehicle are competent and the pillars are not in the way or cause blind spots. I love the moonroof because it has many choices in how you deploy it. I also like the stereo (8 speakers), so I can play my jazz-fusion music loud. The temp compressor is competent in any mode (A/C or heat). I often use the heated (3-way) seats instead of the heater. The only thing that bothers me with this Passat is the way the diagnostics (clearing oil changes/service intervals) is set up. To use it, is like reading a German train schedule. I had to view how to reset these things on-line/web a couple of times before I finally got it. The owners manual sucks at describing many things but this is almost impossible to comprehend and decipher. It came with Conti tires, which are a terrible match for this vehicle. I'll be replacing them soon with either Yoko's or Pirelli's. With 18" wheels, the Conti's are loud/noisey, even on smooth roads. They whine at highway speeds. I fear as they wear more, they'll get louder. I may pre-emptively replace them earlier than their 60K (?) life. But they do seem to wear well, so far. Overall, a very competent vehicle, especially with the warranty (bumper to bumper 6-yrs or 72K miles, whichever comes 1st). Can't beat that!
