The Jetta is Impressive

We're overjoyed.Who needs an SUV or minivan?Think Europe, people! The backseat is ample for our kids and the adults are more than comfortable up front. So far no mechanical trouble whatsoever, except one bizarre electrical thing where the stereo won't power-up with the engine.Happened twice.Briefly disconnecting the battery takes care of it.Otherwise, our expectations have been met if not exceeded in every way with this car.I might more seriously consider the turbo next time. Our standard isn't the peppiest thing on the road(although having the maual tranny helps)but man does it feel solid, responsive and well-built in every way.

I just purchased a used 1.8T six days ago from a respected VW dealer. I loved the ride quality, the safety rating, the performance and what I thought was excellent build quality and reliability. I was very wrong about the latter. Within three days of my purchase the sunroof started malfunctioning, the front suspension began to squeek, and within SIX DAYS, the engine malfunction light came on. AFTER SIX DAYS!?!

just got my 2002 1.8t ride is excellent braking awsome. Sound is outstanding, cant change cds if your thirsty i am pleased that this is my only complaint my vehicle also has to have the turn signal replaced at 300 miles??? On the positive side have you ever been in bumper to bumper traffic then seen the perfect opening in cars that would let you leave it all behind? I have and belive me there is nothing more satisfing then letting that turbo suck in air as your heart picks up then whistle it out as you realize the traffic is no longer around you and the only place you see it is in the rearview mirror. Bravo VW

Its a fun car to drive, I have had it for almost an year but in the past month I've had the radio replaced, the front passenger power window quit working, the reverse light relay was shot, the glove coprtment light stays on and the ignition coil broke. There was a recall on the ignition coil.

I've read some reviews about bad service-- I have had only good service from Ash Tisdelle. The car is great, very fun to drive. Peppy turbo- love the sound. Only a few minor issues and one recall. Coolant sensor went sour (20k miles), right side window fell into door (retaining clips were bad) and all was repaired quickly. A big portion of the car experience is the sales/service team. Velour interior looks great when clean-- but acts like a lint brush!

I have had to take my Jetta to the dealership 3 times in the last 8 months to get the windows fixed. The lift mechanisms keep breaking. So unless you live within 10 miles of the dealership, and even then it is a pain, the problems override the fun in driving.

My 2002 Volkswagen Jetta was the worst overall experience I've had with any product, not just a car, that I've ever had. The car needed to go in for repairs an inexcusable 13 times. Some repairs took multiple visits to correct which was a strong indication of how inept their mechanics are. The car had problems ranging from electrical to catalytic converter to even the radio needing to be replaced twice. The customer service was neglectfull and even rude at times and the Volkswagen customer care people do not care! My car now is leaking through the sunroof & smells like a fishbowl. Their service is outright terrible. Don't buy a Volkswagen! That is unless you enjoy frustration and being ignored.

Two months(6,000 miles)after I bought my Jetta, the dash lights burned out. I paid out of pocket($150) because it was not under warranty according to the service dept. At 45,000 miles my front passenger window broke ($315). At 50,000 miles, a spring popped out from under the seat and the relay switch for the turn signals has stopped working (not repaired yet). It is also hard to get a loaner. Like everyone else said, "get to know your mechanics @ the serv. dept."

When I bought my Jetta I was surprised when I hound out it only had 115 hp! It wasn't really fast but did keep up with V6 Accords. This car is near perfect with a few exceptions: it needs more power, needs more legroom both front and back, and to restyle the seat back tilt(use something else than a wheel all the way back) I think its givin me carpal tunnel syndrome. Otherwise this vehicle is more fun to drive than my Passat.

I put on alot of mileage on the car per year and I need it to be fun to drive/reliable. I am actually considering getting the new GLI because : - 2 front rotors changed - Front wheel bearing replaced - O2 sensor replaced - The Remote dies after a mounth - Rattles and noises - Speaker changed - The 2 year warranty (2001) By switching my 2001 for a newer version I would regain a full warranty, a new car with hopefully less problems... I still have time to think about it...

I have had my Jetta 1.8T for about 2 years now and have thoroughly enjoyed it. It has a smooth, comfortable ride, responsive handling, attractive styling, excellent efficiency for the power output, and attractive styling for a relatively low price. The Audi components under the hood make I feel I've got a base A4.

Have owned this car for 14 months now and still not pleased with it. Turbo is overly touchy, handling is poor, lacks extra power at highway speeds and transmission is not overly smooth. Have had minor problems - drivers side window fell off track, mirror adjustment knob broke-off and seal around headlight took on moisture (all 3 items were covered under waranty). Monsoon Sound System is not spectacular (but probably better than a 'No hi's, no lows must be Bose' system). The car can take a good hit though. Recently was T-boned on the passenger side (11k worth of damage) and the car protected me well.

Our Jetta was great until it reached 90,000 miles. The first thing that happened was the check engine light came on. After unsuccessful 3 tries by VW to correct the problem (average $300 repair each time) the light remained on. At 92,000 the generator went out (cost $850). You would have thought it was made of gold or something. That depleted my savings of which I was going to replace the timing belt/water pump (recommended @ 100k) @ $900 and the front stablizer mounts @$250, but instead I sold it. It was a great vehicle until 90k when it began to eat us out of house and home.

This car has been great to me for 7 years. It's fun to drive, get's great gas mileage and I haven't had any major issues. The ignition coil recall several years back was a a bit of a pain (all Jettas and Audi A4s), but they fixed it free and quick. I did have to replace hoses a couple years ago and have had my share of flat tires due to city driving and performance tires, but no real complaints.

I bought my 2002 Jetta and the first engine coil failed less than a year later. The other three coils subsequently failed as well. Besides the engine coil failures I have had the window mechanisms replaced more times than I can remember and the driver side window fell all the way in during the winter of '03. I brought the car in to have the last engine coil replaced and my automatic gear shifter has not worked properly since. Two dealerships have been unable to fix the problem. When I turn on the air conditioner, there is a STRONG smell of mildew that is stifeling and the dealer offered to spray a substance in it for $150. I sprayed Febreze antibacterial, but the smell comes back each time it rains, etc.

I bought this car in 01 but the 02 were out so I got a deal on it. Its fun to drive handlkes great but the interior catches evcery piece of lint, cup holders suck, the radio's rear speakers seem to have a problem; brought them back twice dealership can't figure it out, and two days off the lot i had to bring it back they replaced all the brake pads. VW makes a decent car but they charge for a great car. Either they need to lower the cost or increase quality.

I loved my Jetta VR6. When purchased I made sure it had all the bells and whistles...I was in love. It didn't take long for it to start letting me down.. AC went out- Heated seats went out- water pump went out- windows rattled until a piece finally broke. Last week I was told the transmission was leaking which was the culprit of the engine light coming on over and over. In a nutshell I loved this car. It was so much fun to drive and design was great... I was forced in to parting with it because mechanically it began giving way far too early. I had regular maintenance and it didn't help prevent problems. I would never buy another Jetta or any VW for that matter. Gone back to Honda, like home!

Every piece of the car has had to be replaced including the coolant tank, transmission, gas tank etc. I am so upside in what I owe compared to the $7,437.23 that I have put in it in the last 3 years that I will be paying for the car long after it's dead.

I bought this car about 2 and a half years ago. Nothing but problems, after 3 months my water pump blew. I should have got rid of it then. My radio nobs have fallen off, my arm rest broke, the seat adjuster broke in half, the value drops about 75% after you drive it off the lot and its so uncomfortable . Last week I lost the only key the dealership gave me when I purchased the car. Most dealerships can cut you a new key off of the vin right then and there. Not Volkswagen in order to get a new key you have to drive to Layton (30 miles from my home) show them proof you own it then they will order you key and then you have to tow your car to the dealership. price of key 200.00! Ridiculous.

This is my first VW and I have been very impressed. Earlier years (1999 & 2000) had problems with build quality (window regulators, coilpacks), but I have had no problems. I think VW did a good job of working the bugs out. Love the monsoon stereo and sunroof. Really fun to drive. Great power and smooth ride. Good looking car that maneuvers easily. It is a pleasure to drive.

This car has tons of rattles, the dealer can never fix any of them and returns the car soiled each time. A defective seat track which was suppose to stop the instrument cluster rattle took four months to order the part and then the problem still persists. The car is five months old and has been for six unscheduled services.

This car was fun to drive until the relationship degenerated to the point I cringed ever time I had to start it, fearing something else would break. If I weren't able to complete most repairs myself, I'd probably have spent 5-8k in repairs. All the usual problems—bad ignition coils, 3 radios, window regulators, broken keyfob, multiple wheel bearings (as in 7 or 8 of them), various failed switches, broken glovebox door, broken center console latch (x5) & antenna. In addition, I had 3 airbag system component failures (which I couldn’t fix myself and cost $$$) and a wheel vibration issue that nobody could resolve. I gave up at 79k because I knew the plastic waterpump impeller was on borrowed time

The engines great, I'll give them that, but I had to bring it in to the shop four times over a mere 10 month period, the window motor is busted again, and I have to bring it in once more in a couple of days. The overall performance may be commendable, but the little problems and the unprofessional attitude/skills of customer service is more than enough to give you a headache.

I've had this car for almost two years now and still walk outside and smile. I will have put almost 70,000 miles on it when I get to two years (I drive from site to site for work) and have had no issues I couldn't handle myself. While parts are expensive for the car, it is amazingly reliable. It may cost $60 to change the oil or $50 if you do it yourself, but you only have to change it every 8,000 - 10,000 miles because it uses fully synthetic oil. I haven't sensed any power loss after all this time and hope to keep this car FOREVER.

I was excited to purchase my third VW. I bought it with 31k on it.. By 70k I was stranded in Boston with a blown engine. VW refused to fix it because it was 5k or so over the powertrain warranty. Sludge problems on them are common yet they have no desire to correct any issue with it. Finally they agreed to give me 1k towards fixing it (which as you know if you own a VW dealeship garage prices are insane .. I was quoted a 6k figure to fix the engine ) in addition to the engine brake lights cont to come on and off, the check engine regardless of anything refuses to go away, and electrical system is poor. Its sad to see that a car that had a solid reputation has decreased in quality so much.

We bought our Jetta in August 02 so we don't have any long term experience with it but the time we have had it has been great!! The quality of assembly and materials of the interior is wonderful and the exterior styling is what we were looking for. I work for an automotive supplier and could have recieved some great discounts from the "big three" but they just didn't have a car that could compete with the Jetta. The VR6 is incredible in it's smoothness and power. This is the first import we have owened an at this point we are very impressed.

This vehicle has been in for repair work averaging every 8800 miles. Each time it is for something different (recalls, check engine light, power windows etc). The average driver should expect what is equivalent to about three extra car payments every other year once the warranty expires. My advice is to unload it before the warranty expires. VW refuses to stand by it's vehicles. This is not directed at the dealership. It is directed at the manufacturer's poor quality control and lack of integrity.

We got my Jetta the day i graduated and a month later my drivers window broke so they fixed it. A month after that the passenger window broke we took it back but we had to drive in the pooring rain with the window down and they fixed it. That time they gave us a loaner b/c we were pissed. What we found out is that there is a plastic clip and it brakes but the replace it was a metal one. But your window has to brake first before they will fix it.

MY GLI HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP FOR 5 WEEKS. I WAS BLESSED WITH THE YEAR THAT HAS IGNITION COILS THAT FAIL ON YOU. I AM TOTALLY DIAPPOINTED IN THE VW RELIABILITY. WHEN I GET THE CAR BACK I MOST LIKELY WILL TRADE IT IN FOR SOMETHING RELIABLE.(NOT VW)PARTS AND REPAIR SHOULD NOT TAKE MONTHS TO COMPLETE.YET THEY EXPECT TO GET THEIR PAYMENT ....NOT

I have taken my car in numerous times for recall things. I had only had it for 1 year when the keyless remote quit working - was told it would cost $200 to re-key it - that it wasn't covered under the warranty! (I shudder to think of paying $200. every time it "loses" its memory!) Then the sunroof wouldn't open all the way - I was charged another $200 and told it wasn't covered under warranty because it was only "dirty" and "needed cleaning!" So I'm going to pay $200 every time it gets dirty!?!

I've only put on about 1500 miles on my new GLI and so far the only annoyance is putting it away for the night--this thing is FUN to drive. Its engine pulls very well below 3000, and above that I defy anyone to not wind up with a big fat grin on their face. The 6 speed feels great with short, precise, shifts. The ride is sporty-smooth: you feel the road, but without being jarring in the least. The recaro seats are both supportive and comfortable, even after an entire day behind the wheel. The ergo's are very impressive, right down to the slope on the armrest which leaves your hand aligned with the shift knob. I think I'm in love.

In my opinion this car is the best vehicle for the money. Although it can accommodate 5 the Jetta is most comfortable for 2. The rear seat leg room is tight. The 1.8T is the engine of choice for performance (180 HP Stock/210 HP chipped). The interior is well laid out with the exception of the cup holder. The cup holder opens up covering the radio controls. 2003 1/2 will introduce console cup holders similar to the Passat.
