I've had this car for almost a year and the only thing that I've replaced is the brakes. I've put on a lot of extras with the motor and the visual details. i've loved this car since i've had it. i also has 95,000 miles on and the dealer gave me all the service records witch he told very good car of it. basically if you can take care of the car, you will love it

The VR6 is the worst car I have ever owned. I feel very stupid for having spent as much as I did for this lemon. Right off the lot I had problems, and now, a year later, I have to replace the transmission or sell it for parts.

This car breaks down more than any car ive ever even heard of! Something anything breaks at least once a week and being a vw parts cost $1000+ for the simple crap! Bought car 6 months ago at 107,000. It now has 117,000 and after $2000+ in repairs the transmission is going out. The car has ruined my financial life! i owe $4000 still thats twice what i could sell it for if it worked! -__- Very expensive lesson learned! DO NOT BUY THIS CAR!

This car has only given my nothing but trouble. I have had to replace the A/C sensor, fuel sensor and the best of all the timing belt broke at 72,000 miles and it is supposed to last up to 105,000. They never wanted to recognized the damage so the cost to fix it was $4,600. Only 50% of the actual car value. As a car: this vehicle is not worth it! As a investment: Volkswagen has the worst customer service: They never help (just lie) Think first before you buy one.

I have a 2001 Jetta. The check engine light has come on numerous times during the past couple of years and I have spent more than $1,500 a year on repairs, over and above the regular maintenance. I am really tired of this car's bad quality. My colleague has the same one and has the same problems. I will never buy a VW again! Quality is the key, look at all of the Japanese cars around.

I spent 20 billions dollars fixing this car!! wahhhh the reviews of this car are so ridiculous. try doing your own repairs and they don't coast as much!, this car is a low end piece of crap we all know that any low end car will need a lot of repairs, most cars need tons of repairs! Its usually negligence by car owners that causes car problems..

This car is so much fun to drive, and easy to learn on. Parts are a bit expensive, but it hasn't really broken down. One tail light keeps going out, but that's about it. This is an excellent car and I love the turbo. The only problem I have is that it requires premium gas, which is more expensive than diesel. I only get around 22-26 MPG, so I would recommend getting a TDI considering gas prices right now. Also, it gets dents and scratches very easily (like from dogs jumping up). Overall, this is a great car.

I purchase this vehicle pre owned for my wife at the time it had 70 thousand miles and was doing good until we hit 90 thousand. The car has been worked on multiple time and is mostly electrical issues. The car is very low and my wife knocked off the bumper twice just be aware of that also. I have changed out the alternator twice on this vehicle as well. This car is a costly vehicle and I would not recommend this car to any one. The space in this car is small and I honestly never felt comfotable driving it. In the future I will avoid anything VW.

Bought a used 2001 Jetta VR6 automatic to replace a 2001 Beetle 1.8T 5-Speed. This was the 8th VW I've owned (several GTIs, Sciroccos, a Karmann Ghia) but the first VR6, the first 4-speed automatic and the first with unexpected issues. Electrical gremlins made themselves known within the first 1000 miles we put on the car. First, it would occasionally refuse to start unless you reseated the battery-box fuses. Then the sunroof began opening spontaneously. The dealership wasn't able to sort the electrical problems, so I took it to my usual private VW expert. He rolled his eyes and said that VR6 automatics are notoriously problematic (though he had praise for the 2.0 and 1.8T manuals).

the 1.8t is a beautiful car, its not bad on gas and its fun to drive. But do not buy this car, this car will bankrupted you. their are so many electrical problems (automatic window problems, trunk opening problems light problems ect...) that you will run into (and its a lest of $300.00 to get each of the problems fixed). so if you buy this car you better get use to having check engine light permanently on.

This was my second car and taught me the biggest lesson of my life. Buying this car means putting a lot of money into it. I was looking forward to blacking the car out and when i saved up money to do so on my project, something always went wrong. In the shop at least 2 or 3 times a month. Burns oil constantly. Electrical system difficulties. Headlight covers get really hazy. The way they have the rear view mirror is ridiculous and doesn't stay on well with heat.

This was my first "new car." Beyond paying too much for it, the car eats oil on the order of 1qt every 3- 4k. "It's designed that way." is the best description multiple VW dealerships around the country say, and is echoed by the national reps even after putting synthetic in it from day one at the recommended intervals (10k). I add & monitor it every 3-4 times I fill up. After 150k it has a unique "drone" at the 3800 RPM. My repairs have been the standard wear items (brakes, timing belt, CV boot). The car requires unique VW tools to do some of the most basic jobs (like rear brakes). Several recall items - mostly electrical. Insurance and repairs are typically higher for VWs.

I bought this car in January 2009. The first 5 weeks, the signal lights clicked randomly. Then the car would stall out of nowhere. I got it fixed and everything seemed fine for about 4 months. Now, I'm being told I need a new transmission, a new fuel regulator (whatever that is), and 4 new fuses. You've got to be kidding. I only have 64,000 miles, I cant possibly imagine the car being on the road another 40,000 miles.

If you are going to buy a used vw jetta make sure to get extended warranty! Bought the car used at around 60,000 miles with warranty till 100,000 miles. Problems: internal engine problems-dealer replace whole engine, got used engine in-did not work, got another used engine-worked, secondary air system leak-replace cracked round plastic resevour next to oil pan-not covered by warranty, replaced all belts; due to noise, replace faulty ac compressor, coolant leak at thermostat housing. rear alignment is off: not adjustable, WTF! Just got new tires. must be bent suspension? thats gonna cost alot! Otherwise great performance, vr6 is quiet and seems at times "as if the engine is not even running.

My '01 Wolfie has also experienced problems with squeeks and rattles pretty much from day one. Dealer tried, couldn't fix'em. Oddly enough, they have slowly gone away now. With 15000 hard miles the car seems to be getting better. Engine runs strong, tranny nice and tight, suspension still tight, but not harsh. The remote trunk release failed at 10000, but the dealer fixed it under warranty. No other problems to report. Basically, a really fun car, but still has the "econo-box" feel. It is not an expensive car, and it should not be expected to make you feel like it is. It doesn't. Only thing in common with my BMW is white paint.

Mine has 165,000 and runs like new its unreal, but I run synthetic oil and 93 octane.

I admired the looks of the Jetta for a long time and knew this was the car for me. I bought it with 15,00 miles in 2001. When I drove the 5 speed, I was thrilled with its zip and handling. Never had a more fun car to drive. However, this car has cost me more money to maintain than ANY I have ever owned. Replacement of coils, light and electrical probs, the list is a long one. I will never own another Volkswagon. I am going back to buy another reliable, if a bit boring, Honda-which I had before and which cost me almost nothing to maintain and never broke down.

I have had more powerful and bigger cars but none that are more fun. Last summer, I traded in my 1998 Maxima SE for a Jetta, Wolfsburg edition. It was a great decision. The drive of the Jetta is so responsive, tight and perky. My favorite car previous to this one was my 1998 Jetta. This has many more creature comforts but what a car and what a drive!

The car now has 230,000 miles on it and runs better than ever. I am a do it yourself type, but all in all it's been a great car. Changed the oil every 5000 miles with Catrol Synthetic Blend.

Overall this is a very well designed and built car. For the money it feels and drives like a more expensive car. However, my car suffered from door rattles over bumps which the dealer was able to fix after two attempts. WIND NOISE is a problem the dealer has not been able to fix. The driver's door does not seal properly agains the frame of the car causing excessive wind noise above 50 mph. Also, the dashboard is not properly aligned between the doors resulting in a considerable gap between the driver's door and the dash. CHECK FOR THESE TYPES OF PROBLEMS BEFORE BUYING.

I am approaching 30K on my 2001 GLX 5- speed and am sad to say that I won't own it long enough to reach 31K. I love the look and all the neat gadgets the Jetta has to offer-it truly is a fun car and I haven't seen any other has everything I could want and more. Pretty crummy that a cd player isn't standard on the top-of-the-line model. Unfortunately, the warranty is out and the problems are just increasing. The passenger driver side window went down and got stuck, the gas cover motor needed fixed and then replacing ($160), engine problem ($800+), driver side door not aligned properly, and the heat is no longer hot. For $25K, I expect my car to be reliable far past the 25K mile warranty.

Interior: Paint on door handle, stereo and cup holder peeled off. Faulty cup holder spill drinks while driving. Center console mechanism broke and will not support its own weight. Temperature controls do not light up. Exterior: bumper thing on front has too little clearance and will rip off if you get too close to a curb. Front air vents on bumper fell out while driving on highway. Engine: Transmission failing it has problems going from a stop to moving without jerking heavily and randomly decelerates while driving at a steady speed. Car dies while driving with no check engine light to trigger a code. On a better note, it’s comfortable and I get 26 mpg

I bought this car used in 2004 with 65,000 miles and it has been a gem. It's fun to drive (manual) and I haven't had a bit of trouble with it. It has 128,000 miles on it and is still going strong. I will buy another Jetta next time I need a car but I'd like to get a diesel for better gas mileage. My GLS gets 26-29 which is pretty good for such a fantastic engine that just purrs at 80 mph. Can't say enough good about it.

I Always wanted a Jetta, for it's known reliability and safety. However, I discovered how it is not so reliable, I've had multiple sensors go bad, the cat went bad along with the alternator and now the coil Ignition went bad. If your VW has issues when starting in the rain, engine light goes crazy the car bucks and feels like it wants to stall it is the ignition coil. Just got a quote from the dealer 525. to fix. I have currently 112K miles on it, young for a VW I think to have so many issues, I drove a Geo Storm Prior and sold it with 164K and never had so many issues. Luckily a lot of the stuff was cover under warranty at first.. but seems like a money pit, what's next?

To get straight to the point the Jetta Wolfsburg is a car to be avoided. I have had it since new and most of the time it exhibits a mind of it's own. I wait until there is nothing in sight before pulling out because I never know if I'm going to get the peppy little car or the die as you accelerate car. The ASR control feels like it's going to rip the drivetrain apart when it engages on damp pavement. But VW says to speak to the dealer, the dealer says it fine. If it's doing what it should be then VW needs to go back to the drawing board. What do you get when you cross a wonderful interior with bargain bin mechanicals? The VW Jetta Wolfsburg.

After having three Hondas in a route, it was time for a change. And Jetta seemed to be a best bang for a buck, how stiupid I was!! This car is a disaster, windows constantly falling in, gas tank leaking, engingne light coming on and off. I have never had these kind of problems with any vehicle!! I wont even compare this vehicle to Honda because this would be insulting for any Honda out there. I had CRX with 210,000 miles that was far more reliable than Jetta with 55,000. Save yourself a pain dont even look at this vehicle - I know it looks great and handles good, but if you're looking for a good looking RELIABLE commuter this isnt it.

I bought this older car to get around town and to go back and forth from the train station mainly. It's cute and fun to drive, but just a couple of months after purchasing needed work, which the mechanics I took it to had trouble spotting. Getting it fixed has been a hassle, but that's often the case with any car.

The excitment of owning my Jetta was short lived. In the 1.5 years that I've owned my Jetta it has blown 2 fuses, the secondary air pump has gone out on it, the window brackets have broken 4 times and the windows have fallen inside the doors, the soft finish on the door handles and console inside the car have peeled off, the antenna had to be replaced, I had a braking malfunction, the sunroof wasn't working properly, the rear brakes went out within 24000 miles, electrical problems causing the brake lights not to work, sputtering upon starting the car, rough power surges while accelerating, and the interior shows every stain and picks up everything.

I have a 2001 with every option. After 8,000 miles had to get new transmission. Next problem the lights, I have replaced every bulb in the car all before a year was up. The newest problem turn signal relay went out. I have heard of problems with the electrical and windows falling down and with the latest problems I expect for those things to occur next. Overall this car is a joke. Interior is made for short people only, very uncomfortable seats after any lengthy ride. Leather interior is already changing color and deteriorating and the "clear coat" is already coming off.

1.8T and sport suspension is great. Fun to drive, but not much more. The car gets serviced every other month for annoying problems. The passenger and driver windows have been fixed twice, sun roof broke, in hot weather sticky gue leaks out of doors, interior lights don't work right, passenger door doesn't close right, I could go on...

Only probloem ive had is with the dealership and some reliability issues. Other then that this is the best car ive ever driven! I havent test drove that BMW yet but it beats out anything in its price range. The quality of materials and build quality stand up against anything out thier. Plus the innovative feature and the creature comforts that no one knows about or notices untill you own the car are fantastick.

I got in to my first car accident 16 days after I bought my first Jetta in Sept 2000. It was totaled and I am convinced saved my life. On the other hand, my new VW jetta (Oct.2000) drives like a dream but I have been hassled w/ the driver's seat cable breaking, the arm rest lock breaking, the engine light randomly coming on and dealing w/ a service team that thinks you have all day & every day to spend with them by turning what should be one visit into two. Due to these dumb things happening I am about to drop $1350 for the extended warranty (2001 models get the 24000mi or 2yr jippy warranty).

This car drives like a dream when it decides to run. I have had so much trouble trying to keep this thing running that I would never buy another. I had a 1968 beetle that never let me down like this car. They are Nice to look at but you never know where you will be stranded. I bought this car for my daughter but will not let her drive it for safety sake. Not even the Volkswagen dealers can fix these pieces of trash. I still owe 2 years on this thing so if I get rid of it I wiil be a lucky man.

When it's in operating condition, the ride is awesome and fun. Comfortable, stylish & unique features on the interior. I like the way it drives and the comfort, but there's been just too many problems with it to recommend it to others. Window fell into the door, oil plan needed replaced, some computer sensor for $180, serpentine belt and I've had to replace the same headlight bulb twice w/in last 30K miles. Interior parts look nice but they break easily and are expensive to replace. Trunk latch snapped in cold weather, console latch busted & cup holder broke ($160 for a new cup holder, for example). Just found out the cooling fan is broken ($500). Everything is expensive to fix.

In one year, I have brought in my VW over 10 times to have it fixed. It is never a good sign when you know everyone by their first name in the service department. The customer service is horrible. No matter the problem, drivable or not, they could not work me into their schedule unless it was atleast a week away. My car is under warranty and they will not give me a loaner. I have currently been a week and 4 days without a car. If you're thinking of buying a VW, think again. Just go to your local service department at the vw near you and you'll see how many people are waiting.

Bought our Jetta on 10/2000 , a shiny black one with beige interior, it was beautiful! After the honeymoon was over ( about 10,000 miles ) reality set in. This car is not reliable or fun to live with ! The cloth they use for the interior picks up anything and everything and always looks dirty, plus it's impossible to clean. The engine is peppy at low speed but on the highway it always sounds like it needs to be up-shifted to a higher gear. The doors leak out a gooey mess all over the rocker panels in hot weather. Both front side windows fell down inside the doors ( one twice so far ). The turn signals quit working at 30,000 miles ( new flasher @ $120 ).

Check Engine Light: bane of my existence

I've had so many issues! It's like they've gone out of their way to make repairs and maintenance as difficult and expensive as possible. The engine leaks oil, a known VW issue. The worst part is the check engine light. In the 3.5 years I've owned this car, the CE light has been OFF for a total of 2 months. I have taken it to 5 different mechanics, each one plugs it in to the diagnostics computer and either gets NO codes or codes that make no sense. All they can do is turn it off, but it just comes back on. No one can fix it, no one can even find a cause, but the car can't pass an emissions test, and so now I can't legally drive it. $12K wasted!

The Oil Consumer

Burns 1 quart of oil every 3000 miles - even though the ownder's manual says it can go 5000. Also, owner's manual claims oil burning will go away after "short break-in" period - it does not go away ever.
