2000 Jetta TDI
No other vehicle sold in NA can beat this combination of fuel economy and performance.
Utilitarian with fun
I have driven a TDI for 4 years now and still enjoy driving it. I live in Colorado so snow tires are neccesary in the winter but she is still fun to drive 4 years later. It could use a few more horses but for 50mpg it is hard to beat. Make sure you get the additive for the winter because fuel line freeze up will happen with the diesel.

Bring back the Rabbit!
What a huge disappointment this car has been. I've had it in the shop for the radio/stereo/CD player alone a minimum of a half dozen times (and they've never given me a loner). Now, just outside of the warranty (on a 3 year leased car mind you), my 'mass air flow system' (or something like that) goes. MD emissions thing? Anyway, $500 out of my pocket. VW of America's Customer Service sucks. Don't even try talking to them - they're useless. The whole reason I bought a new car is so I didn't have to spend my days in service department... What a disappointment!
jetta 1.8t
this is the most fun i've had driving a car since my old GTI. upgrade the turbo with a simple 10 minute chip upgrade and now you've got 200hp in a $19,000 car.
I'm sold on diesel.
The diesel model of the Jetta gets about double the mileage of its gasoline counterpart, and performs better! 45mpg in mixed driving after 4 years. Great with hills, passing, and cold mountain conditions. ABS works well in snow. Rugged interior components.
