Safety issues with brakes and navigation

SS, 08/23/2024
2022 Volkswagen Atlas SE w/Technology 4dr SUV (3.6L 6cyl 8A)

This is the worst car I have ever owned and I've owned some rough cars. I finally bought a new car that is riddled with issues VW doesn't fix or care to fix. The dealership I worked with is terrible and they don't care. The brakes started to grind within a few thousand miles and apple car play navigation has never worked. They keeps saying brakes are fine even though the grinding continues to get louder. The navigation always thinks I am miles away from where I actually am. I can't disconnect and use my phone and am constantly lost and fighting it. These issues are severe safety issues. I PAID for navigation that I can't use and brakes that sound like I am driving a $2,000 garbage car not a $40,000 car. Super disappointed in VW and will NEVER buy another VW and no one in our family will every own one and we have several kids driving or about ready to drive.

Why don’t these huge trucks have power folding mirrors? I have the SE w/ Tech! And what’s up with the Horn? The low tone horn is too weak! tech package should’ve added parking sensors.

I've been waiting 3 months for a quarter panel. According to Volkswagen Germany, the part will deliver the week of October 23rd. Never came that week, the body called again and was told the week of Nov. 13th. I'll never buy another Volkswagen again, and there's 3 in my family.

I have had to sensors replaced and I need another nut there is NO PARTS available I have been waiting since January and they are telling me August now. This is crazy. Lets hope my air bags actually work if I ever have an accident.

Great, but with terrible squeaky breaks

I love my vehicle, from the inside and out and everything that it comes with and does. My only cons is that mine is a 2021 and it doesn't have a remote push to start key (it does have a push to start button on the inside though), no navigation (have to use your phone), no front camera (just reverse) and even though my breaks are good via service and myself checking them, they squeak so loud and crazy all the time!! What bothers me is all of my cons, my 2017 Ford Explorer had them all, all of the bells and whistles, but a 2021 more fancy model does not?! The 2017 also had no squeaky breaks.

We bought the perfect vehicle—or so we thought. After my son Thomas’s accident, we were faced with the overwhelming challenge of not just his recovery, but the simple act of getting him home from the hospital safely. My Escalade was too tall to get him in and out of easily, and we needed something practical, accessible, and reliable to support his healing journey. After tons of research, we landed on a 2022 Volkswagen Atlas R-Line. It checked every box—low to the ground, roomy enough for his wheelchair, all-wheel drive for Colorado weather, great safety features. We felt confident. We felt hopeful. That hope didn’t last. Within days, the sensors were giving false alerts. The infotainment system would go blank. GPS and radio cut out. The dealership blamed it on charger cords. Then said they couldn’t replicate the problem. Meanwhile, Thomas had three outpatient therapies a week, and I was left without a dependable vehicle. We tried another dealership. They identified wiring issues with the 5F module—the component that runs most of the vehicle’s electrical systems. After weeks in the shop and back-and-forth with VW America, they offered us $6,000 (on a $55,000 car) for our troubles. Then the starter failed—while I was sitting at a red light. The 5F module again. More issues followed: the N80 valve failed twice. The battery died. The infotainment system froze—while I was driving in Houston for medical appointments. Then this month, the power steering and 5f module have failed completely. The car is now undrivable. The needed part is on nationwide backorder, and we have a road trip in May and more medical trips to Houston in June/July. We accepted an $8,000 settlement in February 2024 thinking it would help. Turns out that disqualified us from any more support—even though the vehicle continues to fail from the same root cause. VW is now refusing to help. We are left without answers, without support, and without the vehicle or even a loaner vehicle. I’m sharing our story because this isn’t just about a car. It’s about being left behind by a company that should stand behind its product. This has been stressful, expensive, and at times terrifying. We bought this vehicle to bring comfort and stability into a life that had already been turned upside down. Instead, it’s brought breakdowns—both mechanical and emotional. I test drove the new Atlas about three weeks ago. I’m a tall guy, at 6’ 4” I felt like there was enough room for comfort. The captains chair were so comfortable...they wrapped you like a glove. I’m seriously considering purchasing this vehicle later this fall!

I bought a 2021 VW R-line with tech in sept 2020. Over the past year I’ve had to take my car in not once, not twice but 5 times for the screen going black, the back up camera not working, the mic going out, Apple car play not working, cruise control not working and air bag errors…. I loved the style of this car, it’s beautiful, it will lure you in but once you get it you will wonder if the price snd stay is with the trade off for having a car that doesn’t work right. Currently debating on trading in my new car just to not have to deal with this.

Was very impressed with the 2021.5 Atlas SEL V6 4 motion when purchased new about 13,000 miles ago, impressive space, comfort, technology, styling but all is wasted because of poor quality and excessive mechanical issues and problems. Other owners are experiencing the same defects also, it doesn't help with poor service from VW dealers either. (Both in Illinois and Florida). On the positive side, traded it for more than I paid for it.

Atlas cutting off while in drive or reverse

I’ve been in drive, whether stopped at a light or a stop sign and yes the vehicle is equipped with Auto start/stop but mine complete powered off to the point I have to put it in park and turn off and back on quickly. Today I put the vehicle in reverse from drive and the car did not move once again. Powered off is possibly the wrong phrase but basically the vehicle does not move. It has happened 3 times in the last few months but the dealership claims they have to experience the issue, so my safety is just on the line of the car stalling out. Typically it has been when the idle is low, instead of high speeds thankfully.

I have only ever owned Volkswagen cars. This is my first time owning an atlas. By far the greatest investment I have made. It drive good, the space is outrageous. I love it. People say they aren’t good on gas, and mine is excellent. So far no problems like everyone else has. Maybe they just aren’t maintaining it right.

I have this car for 8 months now. It drives great, very nice drive with a surprisingly good turn radius, for a big car it is very agile. Has enough power. On the highway fast acceleration out of a low gear is not great but not terrible either. What I don’t like is thatcher car by default turns off the engine when stopped in traffic. This “fuel saving mode” is very annoying. It should have the ability to be turned off permanently. Also it has a lot of bells and whistles, there is an alarm for everything. It’s like having C3PO in the car. The entertainment screen with radio etc. Is not very intuitive and neither is the owner’s manual. Overall I like the car but would probably not buy it again.

We’ve had our atlas for about a month now and we’ve come to love it very much it’s a nicely designed suv with a lot of tech coming from a 2011 Ford Expedition this is a huge upgrade my mother and mother in law were stunned when they saw it I’ve gotten many compliments on the Pyrite silver metallic color. I would most likely buy again

I am very happy with this car. It is spacious, very firm and smooth drive. Handling is great given it's size. It does take a bit more on gas then the similar vehicles, but I found it as a small compensation for the rest of the great features this car has to offer. Entertainment system is practical and effective, doesn't look too fancy, but If you don't care about it, this shouldn't prevent you from buying it. Given I drive in NYC the biggest challenge here is finding parking spot to fit.

The Worst vehicle I have, vehicle auto shutting off during driving and needs to put in neutro shift and push start again this is a SAFETY ISSUE. VOLKSWAGEN saids is a ECU software update. But after updating keep doing the same. If you and you’re wanna be safe keep away from VW Atlas. I find in online forums the 2017 to 2024 Atlas, have the same issue.

I’m so conflicted with my 2021 Atlas. It’s like a bad relationship and I keep going back for more! Bought this vehicle new. Have had to replace the rotors 6x Not brake pads, rotors. I’ve barely replaced rotors in any other car I’ve owned ever. Most rotors last 70,000 miles. They only seem to last every 5-7k in my car. The car shakes violently to stop. I’ve crossed my fingers my brakes will work. It also had 2 coolant leaks and the hood latch keeps braking. It’s broken 3x. Besides all of this, I love the car. I love the way it drives (when it has brakes), comfort and space. Love the IQ lights and moon roof. Getting of it…

I really enjoyed this car when I first bought it. Two years later there’s a blown head gasket, thank goodness it was still under warranty. Apple CarPlay is terrible, the brakes squeal like a pig, and when accelerating it hesitates then the engine stops. Now the wire to open the hood is broken and we cannot open the hood of the car. We called the dealership to deal with the active recalls and they keep telling us there’s no solution for the problem at this time. I do not recommend buying the 2021 Vw Atlas. I hope the newer models are better.
