Electrical Issues Render It Useless

Took my 6 month old VW Atlas back to the dealership because of an electrical issues that causes the parking brake to engage while driving, among other issues like alarms going off, windows going down (and being stuck down) and cruise control not working. Dealer determined that door wiring harness was needed but part is on backorder and they have no timetable for receiving the part and making the repair. Apparently the issue is common. I would avoid purchasing the vehicle until VW figures it out.

I've owned dozens of cars and SUVs. The VW Atlas is a great choice for families who have taller children but don't want a domestic brand SUV or full size gas guzzler. Is the Atlas the best mid-size SUV? No, not really. The Palisade and the Telluride are better. However, the Atlas has more room in the third row and the trunk once all the seats are up and being used. If you like VW's simplistic cabins this is the one for you. I like the fact that the climate controls and the gear shift are the same as all the other cars of past. It still looks great. Let's talk dollar for dollar options. I bought a 2.0 SE with Tech, 4Motion, and sunroof. With all the discounts you get a vehicle that is cheaper with more options than all the other brands. Hyundai and Kia are still selling for more than sticker. Also, the Hyundai and Kia lower models don't have nice big wheels or a power trunk... this is worth money right there. The Atlas drives very will if not a bit harsh over rough pavement... this is true. I drove a Palisade for a week and it was much smoother. HOWEVER... like all Hyundais I've owned in the past, the Palisade becomes very boring to drive. Not sure why, but all VWs are much more entertaining to drive. So, for a car that you can get for around $37k this Atlas has nice features such as a huge moonroof, latest safety tech plus radar cruise, power trunk, Android and Apple car play, perforated fake leather seats, and automatic wipers (that's a nice touch). On paper the Hyundai and Kia might be cheaper, but in reality as of right now that 's not the case. Like I said, we have 4 kids who are all older and taller. We have a minivan for long trips, but they all fit fine in the Atlas which you can't say about most of the other Brands. Trunk space is also good for and SUV. You can cram 5 board cases in the trunk plus a small duffel bag. However, it's still not enough for a road trip of any length. It's fine though if you have less than 6 people. Gas mileage and engine performance are good... not great. I bought the 4 cyl since it had more torque in everyday driving and I don't have to tow anything....oh yes it's cheaper too. So, both engines are about the same quickness. The V6 does sound better at low RPM. The 4 cyl shifts less even on the HWY. Gas mileage is about 18 in town and 22 on the HWY. That's about as good as it gets. The V6 didn't do any better when I had it as a rental car. I started putting premium gas in my Atlas and I swear I can feel a power and response difference. But most people might not. The steering is very light...almost too light, but it's not a deal breaker. Oh yes... this car generates NO wind noise. It's almost limo like when on the open road. Doesn't matter how hard the wind blows, there is almost no noise. Overall this is a great family car. I've only had it 3 months but so far no issues of any kind. Bluetooth works fine and all the other gadgets work well. So far so good.

Dec 18/20 - picked up 2021 Atlas R Line that we purchased from the dealership. Since then, we have had to visit your dealership 5 times (in the past 5 months) for an issue that remains unresolved. Each time that we leave the dealership, we are assured that the issues have been resolved. We now video the problems and send them to the service manager. The infotainment system seems to be the problem - we've had continued intermittent issues with the bluetooth not working for phone calls and playing music, radio volume shuts off and we can't bring the volume up, backup camera freezes or goes black, and climate control don't work. The car has had two new radio modules installed in an attempt to fix the ongoing issues. We were told by the dealership that this was not a known issue by VW and our vehicles was the only one with this problems. We approached two with the same vehicle and they had experienced similar problems. We love tlthe vehicle when it works but would not recommend buying one until these problems are fixed.

What else is there to say other than my car has been to the dealership 9 times since July and the issues are still not resolved!! A front camera that has been replaced but not working as the firmware is not compatible with the software of the car, lane assist that disengages on its own, front driving aides that will signal a crash is imminent with nothing in front of you and front sensors that either do not work at all OR will not stop going through a drive through or in traffic!! Dealership is great but VW corporate is dragging there feet on helping me out! Clearly something wrong with this one so either put me in a new one or buy me out!

Shopped for a month and was going to go with the Highlander. We first tried the 20 Atlas. Before buying the Highlander, we tried the 21 Atlas and went home with it. To us it was better than all of them and much better than the 20 Atlas. The price point was a big item. We were able to get the 21 SEL Premium, in our desires color, for 46k out the door. No one could even come close with the other manufacturers. The space, ride, and better pricing sold it.

Just purchased an Atlas SEL. So far a very smooth ride. We are coming from a 2012 Honda CRV, and the room and storage space is night and day. Captains chairs are a must I feel if using the third row often. Wider and more seating room than Highlander. Quieter and more refined than the Explorer. Many prefer the Palisade and Telluride, but we honestly got better rebates and incentives going with Atlas. We just took a 600 mile road trip and averaged a little bit over 22 mpg. Time will tell on durability and reliability, but so far so good.

The VW Atlas has both the roominess I need and the luxury of German engineering with style. SO MUCH STYLE! (*I've owned a Jeep Commander and a BMW X3 - neither even compare to the Atlas.) I love looking at the Atlas as much as I love driving it and I've never felt like that about any vehicle I've ever owned. I read 10M reviews before deciding to test drive and ultimately purchase a brand new Atlas in December of 2020. I had read about horsepower being an issue, but I have always felt like it was zippy for as large as it is. It's obviously not a sportscar and while it doesn't ignite like one, it's incredibly smooth on the road and quiet. I can't say enough good things - I plan on driving it forever!

Car is spacious with great safety features but the engine / transmission pairing is 3rd world quality. Car hesitates when accelerating, shifts back and forth between gears, and provides a rough acceleration and stopping experience. When putting car into park, the engine will buck. I cannot imagine that a company that makes Audi and Porsche would allow this poor work out the door. DEALER HAS NOT been able to fix -says it is common.

I have had my atlas for almost 2 yrs, so I’m pretty familiar. I’ll start with the things I appreciate: Looks great Handles beautifully in snow/ice Very roomy interior & great cargo space I have the package which includes remote start & heated everything including the middle seats - highly recommend for a cold climate! Things that drive me bananas & make me hate driving this car: The Apple CarPlay tech is glitchy & inconsistent- I have to reset multiple times per week. Idk if this is a VW or Apple issue or the problem is the 2 together. But it’s ridiculous & should not be an issue at all The sensors that tell you you’re about to hit something are INCREDIBLY overly sensitive. As in, when I come to an abrupt stop they beep. If there is a snow flake within 6 feet, they beep. If I pull up next to a car at a light l, they beep. I have asked & apparently there is not way to adjust or turn these off. The new (I’m guessing cheaper) brake materials make your brakes sound like R2D2 - even when new (not needing to be replaced) & clean. Worse when it’s cold. I paid too much for this car to have brakes that sound like they’re grinding. VW dealership would NOT replace without charging me. These cons may seem like they’re not a big deal but they really are VERY ANNOYING when you drive day in & day out. This will be my last VW purchase.

This vehicle is a POS. Parking brake engages when you stop at a light. Warning bells continuously dings when stopped and error message says “warning engine running”. Numerous faults saying “door Contact faulty” with constant warning bells dinging. Interior is cheap. Thank god it was just a rental.

I can’t say enough how much I wanted to love this car! It looks amazing with the black rims and brown interior but I’m fed up with the performance! I know most brand new cars need a break in period, but this is ridiculous. I’m purchased my new 2021 Atlas SE Technology R-line October 14, 2020. Initially I loved the car. It drove well, but I did notice a jerking with acceleration, and when restarting from auto start/stop at red lights, but it didn’t really bother me since I was used to it in my BMW. But I’m the last month, it’s gotten really bad! Slams to a stop if someone makes a u-turn near you or attempts to come into your lane, or even just backing into your garage! It will freeze if you’re trying to park and changing gears, then jerks forward or backwards! No fun if you’re in your garage and fearful that you’ll drive into your house our structural pillars outside the garage. I could go on but think you get the general idea that it’s not a good car! 8 months in and I’m ready to get as far away from this car as I can!

After comparing and test driving similar 3rd row SUVs, the space that the Atlas offers is... well spacious. Even with the 3rd row up, you’re able to to fit 2 large suitcases in the trunk. My 6’2” husband is able to sit in the 3rd row. It drives smooth and has great tech features - especially if you have an iPhone.

Fell in love with this vehicle. Finally found one that the dealer could get the color and trim I wanted. I have had it 3 days thus far. Love driving it, BUT don't love the audio system dropping out losing all audio output for all options. NO sound for anything related to the audio system. REALLY!! Volkswagen??? I would have expected more form Volkswagen. These types of issues does not just make you look at the audio system it makes you look at the whole vehicle and is a disappointment. Had such high hopes with my purchase of this vehicle. Purchased a high line version of this Atlas. 3 days of ownership and already disappointed. SAD!!! Item 2: WHAT's Up with the HORN. what a joke. am I driving a SCOOTER????? WOW!!!! I work for an automotive OEM manufacturing company. I have no clue what was going through the Electrical Engineering group when they picked this horn. I'm shocked that Volkswagen Engineering let this go. Wow a Scooter Horn!!!! REALLY????

**UPDATE** Have owned the vehicle for over a year and still enjoy it as much as I have the day I drove it off the lot. I've gotten prompt alerts about any recalls and updates. I noticed that now whenever one of the tires has low air pressure, not only will it indicate with the usual symbol (!) but it will also indicate the tire now. I truly think the infotainment system is one of the best in its class. If you're waiting for a Telluride or Palisade to come in stock, I would highly suggest you check out an Atlas. One thing I've learned as an analyst is numbers tell the story, but not the whole story. Whether it's shoes, hats, or vehicles the numeric value of the size by itself may still not be enough data to ultimately make a decision. Quick example: I wear a size 12 shoe, but I can fit a small as a size 10 1/2 if the shoe has a wide design because my feet are wider than normal. I'm 6'4" and have a more wide sitting position than long. Why I bring this up is because both the Telluride, and Palisade display more leg room capacity, but after sitting in all three I felt more comfortable in the Atlas because it's a wider and taller SUV. The Atlas also has a higher seating position which gives you a taller natural viewing position. I felt that both the Telluride and Palisade felt lower to the ground. As with pretty much everything else, you're going to have things you are looking for. For me this was my first Volkswagen and I had some reservations. I've owned nothing but American made SUVs, and VW doesn't have the same experience as Ford and Chrysler when it comes to SUVs. Pros: Exterior is luxury quality. When I first saw the Atlas about a year ago, I thought it was a BMW or SAAB. Just like with the Telluride, you can replace the badging and people will believe that it's a more upscale brand. The Atlas with the R-line package is the one of the best looking SUV's out there on par with the Telluride. The Palisade has really nice interior, but I just can't get past the outside bug like front facia. The interior is where most of the Atlas gets it's marginal rating. For me I see clean, simplistic and functional. I have two kids and a dog and never have to worry about keeping it clean. The plastic honestly doesn't feel or look really cheap, except for the top parts of the inside door arm rests. The plastic on there is different then the plastic anywhere else. Not sure why VW did that. Honestly a lot of people will talk about plastic below the steering wheel. I'm not looking below the steering wheel so I'm not overly concerned about that. Besides I want more durable material by my feet. Everything is easy to access and navigate. I don't want to have to feel like I'm studying for an exam to understand how to navigate the infotainment system or air system. I've rented other Hyundai's and honestly the new gear shifter is a little scary. I've accidently shifted it into neutral a few times. I've seen others comment on similar experiences with the Palisade as well. The drive quality is amazing. The wheel width of even the base model tires are more than others in this segment, and if you get the SEL Premium R-line like me you have 21 inch tires which no other SUV in the segment has. The road feel is incomparable, however you do give up some shock absorption which for me is a viable trade off. Cons: Now I want to make sure I'm being subjective. There's a reason why the Telluride and Palisade are the best selling SUVs. From a pound for pound value perspective, it's hard to put any other SUV against those two and not feel impressed by them. It's easy to see where you're money was spent when you look around the inside of either one of those vehicles. I just love the asymmetrical look of the interior of the Atlas with the combination of German and American accents. From what I can remember no other SUV's in this segment offer second row ventilated seats at the price point of Kia and Hyundai. Most don't over them at all, and that includes the Atlas. Volkswagen did change their warranty which was pretty good at 5 years so make sure you check on that. Hyundai has always been good with their warranties. The lift gate can only be closed by7 pushing the button on the gate itself. I'm assuming this is a safety feature somehow, but I really don't understand why it can't be closed by the key fob or the button on the driver side door. All in all if your looking for a big SUV made for big people, the Atlas should be on your short list. It jus does everything well. Gas mileage is a little misleading as I've been able to get around 23 MPG but that's driving in ECO mode, and you'll lose some acceleration because of it.

Great car but unfortunately mine was in an accident. The side airbags went off and they don’t have parts made to fix it and do not have an estimated time when the parts will come in or even be made. They gave me a limit of $35/day for a car rental and $50 for an suv. Which I am unable to find in my location and they state there’s nothing that can be done. There expecting me to pay for a brand new car and a car rental for an unknown period of time. I find it very unreasonable that they can’t do anything else despite this being a vw problem of not having car parts for a car they sold me.

Since new, I have encountered the same issue. When stopped and about to accelerate, the vehicle will hesitate.This happens with the start/stop engaged and disengaged. As I press the accelerator, nothing happens, then suddenly the car will take off. This happened when I test drove the car (I chalked it up to the start/stop mode), sitting at a light making a U turn to the left.. Since purchase this has happened multiple times, usually when the vehicle wheels are turned to left or right but this past week-end, it happened as I finally was able to accelerate after hesitation and traveling in a straight line. Dangerous to say the least! Dealer says they cannot replicate and they basically do nothing other than suggest I put a few more miles on it. Currently around 3500 miles

I bought a brand new VW Atlas SEL and it was sold from the manufacturer at the dealership with a faulty car net system that never worked. My wife drove it for two weeks and took it into the dealership to get replaced. The part was removed and replaced with a part that also never worked. The part currently is on back order and the car has been in the shop for a month. VW corporate has done nothing to make things right and tell me to be happy with getting a rental from the dealership. Meanwhile I am paying a car payment and car insurance on a vehicle that we are not driving. BEWARE Do not go with VW they are not for the customer.

Love VW products, but this car is simply too bulky in the front. But worse, the dealers are terrible and caused us to cancel our purchase. We decided on a dark green with brown interior with certain options, which required options. None of the dealers wanted to order a car. Their 200% focus was to flip us to take a car from inventory. Then, the advertised VW special financing never applied to what we wanted. We were planning to pay cash and have excellent credit, do we know that wasn’t the reason - and we never got that far. It was the worse experience we ever had buying a car. VW needs to upgrade their dealers or they will never achieve higher sales.

I love the space in my Atlas. The kids have room and so does the dog. However, the breaks sound like I'm grinding metal on metal. I've opened a ticket with VW of North American and they just called saying there is nothing they can do to fix the issue. Are you kidding me! It's a new car, and yet it sounds like my breaks are grinding metal. I turn heads everywhere i go and not in a good way... Their "resolution" is unacceptable and they should be ashamed of themselves! They have designed a faulty break pad and need to fix it ASAP!

Bought brand new 2019 and it was in the shop every other week like clockwork. Steering rack, o2 sensors x6, the list goes on. Get brand new 2021 through lemon law and almost immediately steering rack replaced. Odd electrical issues and known issues with no manufacturer fixes still waiting from 2019. As soon as I get out of this thing, I am NEVER buying VW again.

This vehicle gives you so much room and is laid out so well!!! All creature controls are easily accessed without feeling cramped inside!! Power delivery is substantial with either engine or drivetrain!! Wonderful vehicle to drive!!

Just had one for a week's rental, mostly highway (about 3000 km over the week). Found myself annoyed with some little things: third-row cannot be folded unless 2nd row is slid forward; 2nd row difficult to slide fore/aft when folded; retractable cargo cover stows underneath load floor, and requires complete unloading of cargo and detachment of cargo net to stow/unstow; wipers had annoying click. Kids in back complained of too-firm seats. All USB ports are USB-C only; 2nd-row AC outlet has poor grip on plugs; dash cubby sockets (2xUSB-C plus one 12V) are hard to access while gear selector is in park; Qi charging very intermittent. Throttle response in Eco mode is laggy to a dangerous extreme. Nav system has no lane view and names hwys by their ceremonial names instead of the route numbers as posted on signage (eg. "Highway of Heroes" instead of ON-401; "Autoroute Jean Lesage" instead of A-20, etc.). Findability of gas stations and fast-food in the nav is entirely random and sparse; you can pass a dozen unmentioned drive-throughs and then find some obscure diner listed as an option. Body roll caused some passenger alarm on freeway curves at speed. Plus side: tons of room, infotainment system mostly intuitive, hvac has real controls, adaptive cruise works mostly ok but can be slow to close gaps when car ahead moves over and then surges ahead a little too agreesively.. Holds 130-140 km/h effortlessly and comfortably. And uses regular gas. Caveat: not sure of trim level on this unit.

I have 4 kids. 2 of them are in creates. I looked at all of the top 3 row suvs as well as large suvs. Palisade, pilot, highlander, telluride, atlas, expedition, Tahoe and suburban. The atlas was the best bang for the buck when it came to features and size. It is the largest of the 3 row crossovers but much easier to drive around town no much cheaper than the large suvs. With the exception of the suburban and expedition max the space isn’t noticeably different. Car seats fit great and getting into and out of the third row is easy for the other kids. I got the sel rline 4motion. Originally was looking at the we with tech but the digital gauges are worth the upgrade in trim to me as well as the large sunroof.

Bought a new vw 2 weeks ago. Programmed my address and it loaded but will not take me there. Went back to dealer they checked and said there is nothing they can do. Phone vw canada. I did that talked to customer service ,then asked for supervisor explained. Got nowhere he said to phone software company. The phone number he gave me the company does not manufacture for the Atlas. I emailed and phoned back and no one returns my calls. Further checks found this navigation system is a new platform mlb3 used on Audi i payed $60,000.00 for a defective car

The 2021 WV atlas SEL premium now, when you add a RLINE package there is NO DELETED features, not like before the 2019 VW atlas sel premium with Rline package, the power folding mirror, area view/360 camera and park assist are all gone.

My Atlas 2021 (SEL Premium) just lost the features of 1) Navigation on Cockpit and 2) CarPlay today, after the maintenance (regular for 2nd year) and 2 recall fix (97GF: front door wiring Harness) and (87H4: A/C drain tube). Navigation on Cockpit, it used to be a "map" button on the navigation menu to switch the map between Infotainment and Cockpit. Now the button is replaced as "Music". The Cockpit just day "no positioning data available" on the navigation view. CarPlay simply does not work any more. Tried with 2 iPhones and using Apple's cable. Seems like the system has updated during the maintenance fix and these two features were removed intentionally. Can't believe VW and the dealership would do this without telling the customers.

I leased a 2021 Atlas and the blue tooth and voice command stopped working within 4 days of the lease. It’s been over 45 days that the car is sitting in the dealership and yet there is no ETA on the part. I’ve called the customer service and no ine is willing to hello

I drove a 2021 VW Atlas SEL around San Diego doing airport runs. I was literally scared to death about the handling and steering. The lane assist kept kicking in at odd times causing the car to move unpredictably and there was no obvious / easy way to turn it off. The integration with Apple Play was horrible via Waze with the driver's screen going half blank with a message saying that the nav was using another app but not bothering to put the speed front and center (it was on the lower right). Then the audio cut out entirely as though I had hit a mute switch and nothing I could do with the manual volume control nor the steering volume control nor on the iPhone itself would bring back the Waze nav audio. The handling / steering feedback was terrible like I was driving an over-assisted 1974 Ford Grenada and I've already mentioned the unpredictable lane assist feature. On the plus side, it's relatively quiet with low wind noise and it's reasonably quick. The Fender sound system sounds great once you figure out the horrible interface and that "app" button on the right side of the central screen (whoever did the UX should be fired asap). Car is being traded in for a mini-van shortly.

I have a two month old atlas with 5000 freeway miles on it. I took it to the dealership for an oil change and was told it needed a four wheel alignment and four new tires. I called Volkswagen and they were so backed up I had to chat with them. It took many days and much pleading before a regional Volkswagen manager called me and said it was all a mistake. I could pay to have my alignment checked Which was 400 bucks or I could just forget about it. The tires are probably fine the dealership was wrong but I could call the tire manufacturer if I wanted to. Steer clear of this vehicle. The cruise also doesn’t work if you remote start it. They don’t know why even though I see the same complaints from years back on the atlas and they were working on a software fix. Volkswagen doesn’t care about its customers. I recommend the Kia or Hyundai.

I went in with an issue with my Bluetooth system and the service department stated that they have been having issues with multiple vehicles and do not have the part to fix the issue and that they will have to contact me when the part comes in.. The company and dealerships should offer a NO payment option until the issue is fixed. Somehow the parts might just show up faster!!

I was so exited when I got my atlas 2021 SE. but after six moth only I start having issues with it. Not it’s the second issue I have in six month only. 1- it’s was injecter issue the car spent 2 days at the dealership location 2- It’s my wireless charger is not working I m not sure what’s next? I’m really disappointed.

Why don’t these huge trucks have power folding mirrors? I have the SE w/ Tech! And what’s up with the Horn? The low tone horn is too weak! tech package should’ve added parking sensors.

I've been waiting 3 months for a quarter panel. According to Volkswagen Germany, the part will deliver the week of October 23rd. Never came that week, the body called again and was told the week of Nov. 13th. I'll never buy another Volkswagen again, and there's 3 in my family.

2022 model. I have had it in the shop twice for air bag warning lights on. I have had to sensors replaced and I need another nut there is NO PARTS available I have been waiting since January and they are telling me August now. This is crazy. Lets hope my air bags actually work if I ever have an accident.

I love my vehicle, from the inside and out and everything that it comes with and does. My only cons is that mine is a 2021 and it doesn't have a remote push to start key (it does have a push to start button on the inside though), no navigation (have to use your phone), no front camera (just reverse) and even though my breaks are good via service and myself checking them, they squeak so loud and crazy all the time!! What bothers me is all of my cons, my 2017 Ford Explorer had them all, all of the bells and whistles, but a 2021 more fancy model does not?! The 2017 also had no squeaky breaks.

I bought a 2021 VW R-line with tech in sept 2020. Over the past year I’ve had to take my car in not once, not twice but 5 times for the screen going black, the back up camera not working, the mic going out, Apple car play not working, cruise control not working and air bag errors…. I loved the style of this car, it’s beautiful, it will lure you in but once you get it you will wonder if the price snd stay is with the trade off for having a car that doesn’t work right. Currently debating on trading in my new car just to not have to deal with this.

Was very impressed with the 2021.5 Atlas SEL V6 4 motion when purchased new about 13,000 miles ago, impressive space, comfort, technology, styling but all is wasted because of poor quality and excessive mechanical issues and problems. Other owners are experiencing the same defects also, it doesn't help with poor service from VW dealers either. (Both in Illinois and Florida). On the positive side, traded it for more than I paid for it.

I’ve been in drive, whether stopped at a light or a stop sign and yes the vehicle is equipped with Auto start/stop but mine complete powered off to the point I have to put it in park and turn off and back on quickly. Today I put the vehicle in reverse from drive and the car did not move once again. Powered off is possibly the wrong phrase but basically the vehicle does not move. It has happened 3 times in the last few months but the dealership claims they have to experience the issue, so my safety is just on the line of the car stalling out. Typically it has been when the idle is low, instead of high speeds thankfully.

I test drove the new Atlas about three weeks ago. I’m a tall guy, at 6’ 4” I felt like there was enough room for comfort. The captains chair were so comfortable...they wrapped you like a glove. I’m seriously considering purchasing this vehicle later this fall!

I’ve been driving a Volkswagen since 2001. This is my 11th one to buy and I absolutely love it. I’ve had Jetta’s and a Passat but this Atlas is a totally new driving experience. They thought of everything you could possibly need.

I have this car for 8 months now. It drives great, very nice drive with a surprisingly good turn radius, for a big car it is very agile. Has enough power. On the highway fast acceleration out of a low gear is not great but not terrible either. What I don’t like is thatcher car by default turns off the engine when stopped in traffic. This “fuel saving mode” is very annoying. It should have the ability to be turned off permanently. Also it has a lot of bells and whistles, there is an alarm for everything. It’s like having C3PO in the car. The entertainment screen with radio etc. Is not very intuitive and neither is the owner’s manual. Overall I like the car but would probably not buy it again.

We’ve had our atlas for about a month now and we’ve come to love it very much it’s a nicely designed suv with a lot of tech coming from a 2011 Ford Expedition this is a huge upgrade my mother and mother in law were stunned when they saw it I’ve gotten many compliments on the Pyrite silver metallic color. I would most likely buy again
