2012 Volvo XC70
Even before I got my driver’s license in 1972, I always longed to own a Volvo. My dream finally came true with a new 1986 745 GLE. It was everything I’d wanted, and more. I drove it for 460,000 trouble-free miles before donating it to charity. It was still in good shape after 26 years but it needed a new clutch and since I’d already bought my next one, a used 1994 940, I was willing to … donate the 745. Although it was in great shape, the 940 wasn’t as much fun to drive mainly because of the automatic transmission. I drove the 940 reliably for 11 years, and a few weeks ago, an inattentive driver rear-ended me without braking, from about 45 mph. The 940 was totaled but luckily my wife and I escaped serious injury thanks to Volvo’s safety features. After that accident, I won’t buy anything except a Volvo. My wife was nagging me to buy a Lexus, but I was eyeing the XC70 and was lucky enough to find a 2012 AWD 3.2l six with low enough miles at a decent price to make it worthy of replacing my destroyed 940. I had no idea how much Volvo had advanced until I drove this baby. She feels as solid as a rock, has ample power and is supremely comfortable. Honestly, I feel spoiled when I drive down the street. I’m still cynical about needing all the electronic gizmos that come with it, but damn, this is a nice ride. The handling could be a little firmer but it sticks on corners, and on the open road, it’s an absolute dream. The engine purrs, the seats are spectacular and the build quality it as good as anything that money can buy. The doors are incredibly well-balanced and close with a really light touch. On a recent recreational trip involving freeway and city driving, I averaged 25.5 mpg. Not bad for a 4,200 lb. monster that’s almost 9 years old. I expect on a straight freeway run I’ll get about 27-28 mpg. Around town it’s been 20-22 mpg depending on how much of a hurry I’m in. I’m impressed. Certainly much more than I expected to be. Most important, my wife loves it, and she's not even going to drive it.
