Used 2008 Toyota RAV4 4dr SUV (2.4L 4cyl 4A) Consumer Reviews
Good and not good points
First of all the bad. Road noise on this car is excessive and the ride is not good. I wasted money by putting the premium sound system in it. Unless it's parked you can't hear it very well. I've had trucks made in the 80's that had a comparable ride. You feel and hear every bump. I see that the 2009 reviews noted similar issues. It's a car that's used by my wife and the interior carpet looks like it's 5 years old. There is no reason for it except for very poor quality. The seats are not very comfortable. The good is that mechanically it's a very good vehicle. That's mainly why we bought it. Just make sure you can live with the other issues. Maybe the Limited version has better sound proofing.
Upholstery problems
Purchased this 08 base RAV at the end of October. It's now 7 months old and this is an update to an earlier post. The front upholstery continues to pill and fuzz and just look really, really bad. The back seats are fine since they are hardly used. I have an 8 year old car that looks better inside than this one. It took a certified letter to Toyota for Toyota to tell my dealer they would help them solve the problem. They've offered custom seat covers, but that was over a month ago and I'm still waiting to see if they match the rest of the interior. Wish I didn't like the handling and pep so much - it would be much easier to just get rid of the RAV.

Raves 4 RAV4
My wife, 2 dogs (German Shepherd and Rottweiler), and I needed a car that could carry us all on trips in comfort and with good gas mileage. The RAV4 seemed to fit the bill. In actuality, it more than fits our needs. We do not need super power on the highway, but the RAV4 is quick and does not have the usual 4- cyl engine noise at highway speeds. MPG is a solid 27 average for us. Fit and finish are great. This base FWD model is perfect for our situation. We could not be happier with this car.
Quirky, but Faithful Family Car for 14 Years
My parents bought a 2.4l base model when I was in high school with only 15,000 miles on it. They had it for eight years with a few repairs (A/C and something with the fuel tank), and it always kept up and powered through. I inherited it after college with 135,000 miles and drove it another six years. During that time I only replaced the alternator. The engine died at 194,000 miles. It had some quirks though. First, it needed mid-grade gas otherwise the engine would start knocking (which is why it loses 1 star, that's been a pain in this economy). Second, if it rained, moisture would always get into the gas tank, which would disable the traction control and cruise control until I filled the tank again. Third, it burned oil, and I would have to add about four quarts between oil changes. It was the third thing that ultimately did the car in. I was driving home on a 700-mile one-way trip. I just changed the oil and based on previous driving I had no reason to think it was going to burn through all of that oil in that distance. On the last 100 miles the car had run out of oil, ran dry long enough for us to get off the interstate, and died in a Buc-ee's parking lot. I hadn't realized the car was running dry or I would have just pulled over. I was a little heartbroken over the loss of this car, and almost had the engine replaced because the rest of the car was in good shape. But the car was 16 years old and had almost 200,000 miles, and my grandpa, a mechanic, said it wouldn't be the wisest of investment for the car's age. My next car won't be a RAV4 (SUVs are too expensive right now), but I'm definitely looking at an Avalon, Camry, or Prius V. If the market were better, I'd get another RAV4.

2008 RAV4
I just got married and wanted something slightly bigger than a sedan (previous car was a 1994 Accord coupe). We test drove the Rogue, CR-V, Tucson, Vibe, and RAV4. We wanted something that was versatile, reliable, and gets good mileage. The 4-cyl gives good acceleration, but can be noisy. Leg room is good enough (I'm 6'1"). We live in a snowy climate but don't need the AWD. Very happy so far, would buy again.
