Poor design and low quality interior parts.

I have owned a lot of Toyota vehicles and have never had this many problems. I purchased a 2014 Limited and knew about the really stiff suspension. I am sorry I ever purchased that model for the following reasons. Soon after my purchase, I experienced several recalls and noticed the interior was starting to have issues. My chrome cup holders started peeling and it was covered by the warranty. Shortly after the warranty expired, the back of the drivers seat fell off due to really poor quality clips that held it on. I experienced multiple issues with the rattling powered sun screen and the dealer could not make it stop. I did not use it that much and when I did try to raise it last summer, it jammed half way up. Returned to the dealer and it was defective and would only cost $1700+ top replace it. I also had issues with the trim piece around the dash area peeling and it was razor sharp. I had to pay for that repair since the warranty was expired. I have had to deal with being blinded by the sun reflecting off of the chrome trim behind the steering wheel. I live in Arizona and we have lots of sunlight which makes driving at times difficult. My most recent issues involved the driver's arm rest on the door starting to fray and crack. I thought this would not be a real issue and I could just replace that one part. It was a big issue, since Toyota designed the door panel to be one piece and you have no option to replace that one failing part. I guess they need more of our money. The car has been pretty good mechanically and I have kept up on the service end. I am very sorry I ever bought this car and wish I could have a do over.

battery problems

My 2014 was my second Avalon. I owned a 2008 which I was very happy with and had absolutely no problems and traded because I was offered a good trade in price and reviews pointed out body and performance improvements in the 2014. The car was garage parked and taken to dealer every 5000 miles for service including oil change with synthetic oil every 5000 instead of 10000 miles. After around 4 1/2 years wife discovered headliner hanging down behind sunroof. I took to dealer and had to pay over $2000 for new headliner and installation. I don't know cause for this. Original battery lasted 5 years. Replaced battery Oct 2018. After that we would find battery totally dead after taking trip (using my truck) and letting car sit in garage 7-10 days. I took to dealer and had checked out and had parasitic drain test done which showed nothing. When going out of town for trip (using truck) I disconnected battery to see what happened and battery had charge when I returned (100% charge when I left, 90% when I returned). I took car to Toyota and they checked out Toyota 84 month battery and said it was fine. My wife drove car to dentist on a Tuesday and we didn't drive car rest of week (which was unusual) and battery dead (2.7 volts on Sunday morning) I took car in and they checked battery and said it was fine and drain test negative so that ruled out problems. I purchased new Interstate battery on a Monday and drove car Tuesday and Wednesday and it sat in garage 3 days and new battery dead Sunday morning. Contacted service manager and brought car in Monday for a week to check. Called me Friday and informed me car started every morning. Left until following Tuesday after Labor Day and car started (I wonder if starting every day reset something). Explained to me again that battery will loose power if left sitting and recommended battery tender. This car is driven pretty much daily except when I take truck for vacation to haul things. I have never had a car I couldn't let sit for a week (sometimes less) without battery going dead. My wife and I are in our 70's and wife has medical issues requiring a reliable car. I have owned a Toyota continuously since Oct 1976 but gave this one to my son in law and purchased a new Honda last week. I paid $44000 for this Avalon.

comfortable, economical, peppy, roomy, reliable - only routine maintenance needed for ten years of trouble-free driving. Dealer wants it back as a trade-in - but, maybe not for 10 more years.

AVALON IS POOR MAN'S BENTLEY

Go ahead and spend another 25 or 30 grand on a Benz or a Lexus or a BMW if you want. You won't get that much more in a car except a fancy hood ornament. Toyota's top of the line Avalon is, simply, dollar for dollar maybe the best car value in the world. It's sleek, powerful, comfortable, beautifully engineered, and luxuriously appointed in the Limited series and for a lot less money you'll drive home a luxury car. The only reason to buy a more expensive sedan is to show off its marque, not its performance.
