Used 2000 Toyota 4Runner SUV Consumer Reviews
Very Happy
I bought mine brand new, and it still drives like I just drove it off the lot. While putting 75K miles on it, I've had minimal problems. Had to replace power antenna, and the CD player just quit working one day. As for how it drives, no other SUV in it's category comes close. If you choose the 4Runner, you won't be dissapointed.
Liking it so far..
Just bought it (used). The PO had it 35k, no problems. Much easier to drive and manuver than expected. Smooth and quiet for a truck. Required attention when driving in high winds. Driving teens like it alot. I inspected everything pretty good and most parts and components have look surprisingly in good shape. I think I made the right choice.

Best SUV owned yet!
I have always heard of the uncompareable Toyota quality. Well after selling my wifes 97 Accord we bought a 2000 4Runner Limited 4wd. Performs very well offroad, pulls our Sea Doo jet boat well. I will be buying a Toyota Land Cruiser myself as soon as my BMW is sold. Again, an awesome vehicle, highly recommend!
Drive and Sleep Well With a 4Runner
the best blend of roughness and riding comfort, the 4runner runs supreme within its class. it does not drive like a limousine, alright, but it sure is more comfortable than a lot of mid to entry level sedans. with proven reliability and value retention attached to every toyota, you can indeed drive and rest assured that you won't have to spend a fortune in costly repairs that normally hounds owners of competing SUVs.
Dogs are much happier now...
Go with the best and get a 4Runner. Get anything else and settle for less. We throw our dogs in the back and everyone's happy. Toyotas run forever. I just sold my 92 Toyota pickup with 175,000 miles on it. I expect our 4Runner will prove just as reliable!
Used 2000 SR5 Highlander/Sport
I bought a used 2000 SR5 "Highlander" edition almost 2 years ago. This edition has a sport hood, larger wheels, leather seating. Best car I've ever had. Routine maintenance is all that I've needed, approaching 75K, should run for 100K more. Wanted a LR Disco badly, but thank goodness mt wife talked me out of it.
Love my 4 Runner
This is a great truck. It has never given me any problems, soild as a rock. It looks great, has more than enough space, drives well on the road, what else can I say? The best vehicle I have ever owned without a doubt. Much more reliable than my parents Dodge or Jimmy SUV/trucks. Very capable off road as well. I have several pictures of my 4 Runner pulling out the very stuck Jeep of my good friend. Even my dog loves to stick his head out of the sunroof while driving through town. The only negative is that it is pretty thirsty when it comes to the pumps but that is the price you pay for the weight and big rubber.
00 SR5 4Runner
Although lacking in the horsepower department the 4runner is great on milage, roomy and can accomodate my two German Shepherds easily. Toyota reliability makes this SUV stand out from others in the market. The old adage you get what you pay for is on the money! A slightly higher sticker than other used vehicles you will find you spend more time driving and less time in the repair shop. I'm sold on Toyota and the 4Runner will be my vehicle of choice from now on.
Fun with 4Runner
I bought this new and now have about 115000 miles. The ride, the comfort and the reliability have been beyond belief. The only problem was the power antenna that failed at 65,000 miles. Power antenna seems to be Toyota's problem even with Camry and Lexus. The radio still works! I changed the original Goodyear tires at 108000 miles, they still had 3/16th left in them. I changed because it was more than 5 years! The brake pads are still the orignal shoes!!. Mine is a standard shift. I am loving it and hope to drive for another 5 years.
4Runner Limited
This is a fantastic vehicle; only suggested improvement is a larger gas tank.
Reliable
I have owned my 4runner for 6yrs and have 167,000 miles on it and have done nothing but regular maintenance. It is a little under powered but very reliable. I have been on several trails in Moab and in the Black Hills of SD, (great 4wd system) I have the Sport package with the electronic locker in the rear diff. Toyota has built a very reliable and dependable vehicle with this one.
Very happy with mine
Now has 40K. Perfect size for me and my outdoor activities. I wouldn't want to be 6'+ in the drivers seat. We take 2 kids camping with adequate room for kids and gear. Firm suspension but I wanted something to take 4 wheelin in the back country in Colorado - excellent there. Drives nice to me on the highway. Rarely need to use FWD in snow storms in the mountains. About 23 MPG from Grand Junction to Denver OVER the rockies / 19-20 around town - great for an SUV. I asked my mechanic about Toyotas before I bought one. Said I wouldn't see him much any more but when I do it will cost me. Good fit and finish, hasn't needed anything but oil changes in 40K.
Best car I have ever owned
6 years old and 69K miles with no problems. Great car, powerful and reliable. very roomy. All I had to do was change the tires and replace a lightbulb. This car will run forever.
Toyota Strong
This Toyota stands strong to the name it represents. The heritage of Toyota quality is passed on to this automobile. The five-speed manual transmission with the V6 is a fuel friendly, aggressive combination capable of handling suburban traffic entrapments and natures liberating climbs. The interior comprises an appealing approach to functionality and resourcefulness. This model and year is sure to please the toughest of critics.
Great SUV with a few mods
I was concerned about power so I add the TRD headers and exhaust, Amsoil air filter. These mods along with the 5 speed give it plenty of power and torque. The addition of OME heavy duty shocks and springs, slightly larger tires, and front sway bar quick disconnects create a serious cabable off road machine. Reliablilty is great. I think the air filter and headers may have improved my gas milage. I would highly recommend this SUV to anyone seeking a serious SUV. It rides like a truck. The truck underpinnings contribute to its off road reliablity. There is reason the UN and other aid agencies use Toyotas and Land Rovers in the most remote parts of the world.
Tough and Reliable
I've had my 4runner for only a month now but already I see what a great car. It has smooth steering a great ride. But the acceleration house power could be better. It's is very offroad capable. It has conquered everything I've thrown at with ease. I suggest if you want a SUV that looks good on and off the road that can get you where you need to go no matter where it is in the city or out in the country get an SR5 4x4. But, if you need an SUV that is just for off roading I'd suggest a Chevy Tahoe Z71
Reliable, Solid, yet...
The 4Runner is solid, but a stiff ride. The interior is more cramped than my old Grand Cherokee but the seats more comfortable. The V6 is adequate for most unless you like power. With a load & passengers, it will seem very slow. No rattles or sqeaks is a tribute to the quality but my pwr antenna went out (warranty) and front floor mat ripped. CD player skips out. Minor problems for what is overall a fine vehicle. Gas mileage is about 14- 15 in town, almost 20 on freeway. Stock Bridgestone tires wear quickly.
Great midsize SUV
The 2k Toyota 4Runner is a very capable SUV both on and off road. With rugged styling and truck toughness to match, this is a refreshinly capable truck in a world full of pavement queens. The last year of a manual transmission, 4 cylinder, as well as a selectable rear locker make this a good model, also for those who like driver control the VSC system was still optional. As a truck that does not compromise off-road ability for a cushy ride expect to feel bumps, but this stiffness also lends to it's on road handling prowess.
Best SUV ever!
I am a petite girl and the 4Runner is the only SUV that I have driven that I can fit comfortably without being on top of the steering wheel. I have owned my truck for 32 months, have 51,000 miles on it and it's never been in the shop for anything other then oil changes and scheduled maintenace. I plan on keeping it for a really long time!
Great SUV
We've got over 90K miles on our 4Runner- off and on pavement. Love it.. don't even want to trade it in on a new one. Brakes are original and still have plenty of wear left- replaced the tires @80K.
Reliable, just wish it had more hp
I traded in an older 4Runner for this one back in 2001. If you're looking for a reliable SUV, this is the one. It's well built. The only issue I've had is the infamous Maine road salt has required a fix of the parking brake. It offers some great features and is a true off-road SUV. It will get you there and back again in style.
4 Runner 4 ever
This is an awesome vehicle. It looks great, drives great, thrashes around well in the woods and only asks for more fuel in return. I use this truck for your normal highway use but it gets a lot of off road use as well. I have been stuck but it's been my fault. As long as the wheels have something to grab, it moves forward. The only complaint would have to be the fuel costs but it's better than paying for repairs like the jeep I use to own.
love it
Love this car. Can't tell it is 4 years old. I did buy the supercharger and i have never regretted it. The power and torque make an amazing difference. It is also stick shift which makes it even more responsive. The steering and suspension is still tight. Off roading in the sand, dirt snow, it has no problems. Great truck
Awsome SUV
Great Vehicle, looks awsome, especially the Sport Package Highlander model with the Hood Scoop
150K and still running strong
I bought this new and now have 150k on it. I follow the factory maintenance to the letter. I have done two repairs. One was the power antenna ($100), the other was a dirty fuel filter ($500). Supposedly these have lifetime fuel filters installed inside the gas tank but with all the dirty gas being sold I don't think there is such a thing as lifetime filter. Other than that it has been a great SUV. Loves the snow and gets about 18mpg. The OEM front brakes lasted forever...125k and still had 20% left! Still have the back ones.
Great SUV!
I owned a Ford Explorer prior to this 4Runner, and while it was a good SUV, it just isn't in the same class as the 4Runner. This is a great looking, well made SUV. There are no squeaks or rattles - the truck is tight, even after 50,000 miles. The steering is very responsive. While the engine is fine, more power would be appreciated (and is now offered by Toyota).
Versatility and Value. Will last 4ever.
Why spend 13 grand on a 2000 Toyota? There's simply no vehicle out there like it. Incredibly versatile. 4 door, 4wd, V6, manual tranny (i might look at a new one if they still offered the stick), decent gas mileage (way better than the Jeep I used to drive), composed on the highway, QUIET for an SUV, really comfortable sport seats, laughs at the snow, and of course Toyota reliability. The build quality is ridiculous. 8 years old and no rattles or squeaks. Almost feels like a convertible with the windows down, the tailgate window down, and the sunroof open. I paid a lot more than I would have for a 2000 Explorer, but compare it to a new 4Runner and it's a no-brainer. Will go forever.
Great SUV
We traded our 1994 4Runner for this 2000 Runner. It was in the dealer's inventory for several months and seemed to not sell because of the color (Dark Green). We waited until the price dropped and eventually got a great deal. It is a significant upgrade from our '94 in that it has a more advanced 4 wheel drive system, a stronger, quieter engine plus improved creature features.
You can't kill this thing.
Almost 20 years old and this truck still runs like the day it was new. You can't kill this thing.

At 160,000 miles and still going strong!
We own 1 car and we have nothing go wrong. We just started to have to replace parts. It's cheaper than buying a new car. It still looks as good as the 1st day we got it.
Don't miss Explorer...
I bought this to replace my 98 Explorer. There is no comparison between the two. My 4Runner feels like a bank vault in comparison, and is just a nicer, better vehicle in almost every way, except the auto 4x4 which I miss using (but not fixing). I passed up new baby SUVs and newer domestics that cost the same so I could get Toyota quality and a real truck. I was really burned on my Explorer as it was constantly in the shop. Lesson learned.
Fun to drive, strong 4cyl, reliable+++
The 150+ horse power I-4 is adequate for most applications. Excellent acceleration with the manual transmission, strong, quiet and tuff when reved. The interior build quality is impecable. The 2wd model which I have doesvery well on fire roads and minor off road driving. The high ground clearance and manual transmission allows the vehicle to wedge into just about any forseeable situation. With the right tires, it is great on snow too. If you want to climb hills, get the 4x4, but the 5 speed 2wd it adequate for most applications
Great, but....
Current mileage just under 91K. All of the vehicles I drive last well over 100k miles. This one has been perfect with under $115 of repairs excluding disposables. $299 tune-up $495 Preventative timing belt change It has however, had the engine shut down at idle twice now. Once, the fuel filter was replaced, and the 2nd time the authorized service center could not duplicate it.
Great Vehicle SR5 V6 Atmtc 4WD
Bought new, now have 95k, still runs and looks great. Just had timing belt and 90k service done. Service Forerunners and they may go forever. I gave this one to my college bound daughter but want it back when she returns. I want to see if it will go 1,000,000 miles. I was so happy with this one I bought a 2005 but the new ones don't look as good.
Greatest SUV
I love this SUV! The name TOYOTA should say it all. Reliable, great interior an exterior design, performance is great. I couldn't wait until my first big snow storm in 2000 to see how long it would take to get through the snow piles. No trouble at all! If fact it was so fun I went through every snow pile I could see with no trouble at all! I have 29000 city driving miles on it and to this day I have absolutely no problems. I highly recommend the 4runner!
I love the 4Runner
First and only owner of my SR5 4WD 2000 4 Runner. This is the best car. Definitely planning on keeping it another 5 years. Never had any mechanical problems. I take it in for the routine 30, 60k tune ups and oil changes every 3-5k miles. It has nearly 88k milage and still is a solid drive. Very happy w/Toyota 4 Runner product. Convinced husband to buy Toyota. He now owns a 2000 Tundra V8 for 3 years now. LOVES IT.
2000 4Runner SR5 4WD
I have never got stuck off-roading. The high torque is exceptional for the low range 4-wheel drive and for towing, not too quick off the line though. The fuel economy is also a little hard to swallow. For the few who it caters to it is an aftermarket optioners dream S.U.V. All interior panels are easy to remove with common hand tools which makes self instalation of stereos, speakers, lights, etc. a real snap. I have had my 2000 SR5 4WD for almost three years and it still runs like the day I bought it.
4runner fan
Ive had my 4Runner limited for 2 years and havnt had any issues at all. I have taken it out 4 wheeling many times and I was extremely suprised at how well it handles off road. I also commute to work about 80 miles a day. So if your looking for a SUV that looks nice and drives awesome this is the one. I also have a xterra and the 4 runner blows it off the road.
I love it!
I love it. I've always wanted one, and now that I have had one for the past year, my opinion hasn't changed. I still want it and love driving it. It serves both the desire of luxury and ruggedness. Have compared it to friends Explorer, Durango, Jeep, Bravado, and love the 4runner so much more. It just seems much more "tight" than others.
Fun and Reliable
I have had great fortune with this vehicle. It has been incredibly reliable. The only parts that have been replaced in 75000 miles are 1) the heater fan (a "critter" made a nest in there) and 2) the front brake rotors. I'm thinking of selling it now and buying a the 2004 version, just so I can tow a trailer with the optional V8. I hope they never discontinue this model.
Awesome SUV
I ordered a Highlander (Sport) model with the TRD supercharger in late 1999 and have owned this ever since. It still rides like new, the car looks awesome with the hood scoop. I have not seen a better looking SUV. The newer 4Runners have too much cladding. This body style is very clean looking. Not the most powerful SUV but very quick. You can't beat Toyota reliability. Excluding maintenance costs, I have spent $0 repairs since purchasing the car.
4Runner Review
I wanted a reliable off road vechicle that would meet all my needs. Toyota was the obivious choice. Most of my off roading occurs in the soft sand of Cape Hatteras. I wanted bullet-proof performance and I have not been disappointed. Gas mileage is about what I expected for my gear ratio, 14- 15 mpg in the city and 20-21mpg on the highway. I just replaced the original Dunlop tires with 41K miles with Michelin Cross Terrains and the truck feels like it is brand new again. This was my first Toyota and it will not be my last.
I love this car!
I've had this car for almost eight years. I have never, ever had a problem. I just take it in for regular oil changes and have done the 30K, 60K, and 90K maintenance. The only flaws in this car are cosmetic and were my own doing. I live in Oklahoma and have driven it to Las Vegas, New Orleans, the Texas coast, Rocky mountains in Colorado, and back and forth to Kansas hundreds of times. The fuel economy is reasonable given the size of the vehicle. I will have a hard time giving her up.
Solid
I purchased my 4Runner brand new and have owned it for 3 1/2 years and 43000 miles. The truck is as tight as the day I drove it off the lot. I've had ZERO problems. In addition, this is by far the best looking SUV produced in the 2000 model year. I highly recommend this truck to anyone looking for a preowned SUV between $15K and $20K.
Great SUV
I have had this suv for 4 years and never had one problem with it. It has 52000 and nothing has been replaced other then tires.
Best SUV EVER!
I have over 50,000 miles on my 2 yr old Runner and it's still going strong. I haven't had any problems with it what-so-ever. I highly recommend this vehicle for everyone interested. You are really getting your money's worth with this SUV. I had a 98 Explorer which gave me headaches. My tranny went out at 28000 miles. I quickly traded the cheap Explorer for the Awesome 4Runner......best decision i've made in my life.
RELIABLE BUT BORING
I am a 16 year old high school student whose parents bought me this car last year. It is super reliable and I haven't had to replace or fix anything. It says it should get around 19-22 mpg, but I only get around 17. It is very weak and there is nothing special about this car to me. I do like the looks of it though. I chose this car because I know that being a Toyota, it will last me forever. I have 133000 miles on it and don't plan on getting another car for a long time.
Reliable and Fun
We bought our 4-Runner new. 125K off and on-road miles later we are still happy with it. Most reliable vehicle we've ever owned. Have never had to have any brake work done. Can't stand the looks of the new 4-Runner so we're keeping this one until the next body style change.
awesome vehicl
I've had othe SUV's but once i got into the Toyota 4Runner's, I will never go back. I also purchased a Land Cruiser that I also suggest buying.
4 runnin!
perfect truck. body style up to 2003 is the best on the market. just needed a stronger engine.
