Used 1997 Toyota 4Runner SUV Consumer Reviews
Simply the Best
Bought new in '97 and not one problem. Extremely reliable - almost bomb proof (when was the last time you saw a Toyota SUV being towed?). Quiet interior. Great off-road vehicle with good on-road ride. Adequate towing cability with good gas mileage for a SUV. If there is a better 1997 mid- size on/off road combination SUV on the market, I haven't been in it. Did I mention this vehicle is reliable?
Wouldn't Recommend
Don't trust everything you read in Conumer reports about this SUV. I purchase my 1997 4runner in August 2002. Vehicle had 57,000 miles and was a Toyota "Certified" Used Vehicle. Two months later I noticed a heavy shimmy when I applied the brakes between 40 and 50 MPH. Then on cold mornings the transmission wouldn't shift into drive until the engine warmed up. Took it to my dealer, $800...!! to replace front rotors and rear brake drum which had cracked (still under Certified warranty but brake parts not covered). Tech couldn't figure out why the transmission won't shift when cold...

238,000 miles and still going strong!
This is my 2nd 4 runner. I have only replaced the water pump and timing belt. The truck still looks great inside and out. If you want reliability Toyota trucks are the way to go. I expect to get at least another 150k. I don't drive like you mamma either, these are hard miles. The 4 wheel drive is there when you need it, it will climb some steep hills. If you are worried about good dealer service- don't, you will not need it!

PA salt killed my frame
1997 4Runner SR5 4WD. Bought it 7 yrs old with 103K miles. Replaced antisway bar link a year later and noticed a lot of new frame surface rust. 5 years since i bought it the frame rusted through. What a shame, it was a typical strong, solid Toyota. It would have run for 100K or more no problem.
