I bought a 1991 4runner 4x4 5speed 4 cylinder brand new. It now has 265000. Thing runs great....as long as the truck is maintained and not abused it runs forever. Tranny and 4x4 setup is flawless and built like a tank. Engine was rebuilt at 220,000 (probably could have gone much further, but was gonna let my son use it and wanted him to have a very reliable rig and the truck is a horse mechanically. The driver seat needs recovering and could use a paint refresh.....but it has been one reliable vehicle. I have never regretted buying this truck and was glad I got the 4 cylinder engine...didnt have all the bells and whistles like the 6 cylinder, but man does it just keep on running. If you can pick up a well maintained 4 cyclinder...even with high mileage, you have found a machine that can give you years of reliable service. Update 11/02/2023 - The 4runner has about 280,000 on it now and still running strong. I use it now mostly as a camping or overland vehicle...since I have other daily drivers. I had the interior seats recovered, added roof rack solar w/inverter & battery back-up in the rear, 3 row radiator for superior cooling, upgraded with Eibach Pro-Truck springs and shocks (so no sag in the rear).for about a 2 inch lift. My opinion for this very reliable and sturdy little SUV has not changed. After all this time...no serious maintenance issues, passes smog every year and runs like a champ.

I got this vehicle in 94 for $16K with 60K mi on it, it now has 178K, w/ a small amount of rust-thru below the gas door. Reliable except for the common failure of this V6's head gaskets. Warantee covers it. One Toyota "quirk" w/the EFI fuse in the kickpanel fuse box. Seems that the females break contact, a quick bend out of the leads on the fuse itself, and reinserting fixes it till next season change. The only other problem that I've had is there is a subtle leak in the powersteering system. Just a note, a tire change to 32x11.5x15, (fit nice on stock SR5 wheels) the speedometer becomes accurate. I can highly recommend this vehicle.

i bought my runner with 246k on the clock. it has the 22re with a 5 speed and 4 wheel drive. i get 22 mpg average which is great in my opinion for a 4wd suv. it fits my family very comfortably and allows us to go wherever we want very safely. its not fast but it gets the job done it now has 270,000 miles and runs like champ. i wouldn't trade it for a lot of other suv's out there.

I love this car so much. My Grandpa just gave it to me for my birthday. I have only had it for a few months but i can already tell that it is a quality vehicle. When i got it it had 69000 miles on it. In two months i have had no problems even though it just sat around for almost a year. I had its fluids flushed and replaced as well as the battery and belts. I would definatly buy another, but for now i will use what ive got.

I bought this vehicle in 1992. It had 5000km on it at the time. I have had it ever since and it has served me well. I have 400,000km (approx. 250,000miles) on it . From a comfort point of view it's like new. There are no squeeks or rattles. The motor is very quite. My biggest complaint is the tail gate and rear bumper. The tail gate has had two motors in it and presently doesn't work. The bumper has disappeared from rust. Mechanically, I had a new head gasket at 90,000km and another at around 325,000km

The only downside is the lack of power. Gas pedal is very stiff.

This car is a wild beast. There is literally NOTHING the 4runner can't handle. My friends and I have taken her through streams, rock climbing, mudding and playing in the snow. I am so mean to this car, yet it has never once failed me. It keeps going no matter what you throw at it. Lots of room, reliable engine and it just looks so bad ass! I think it's important that you get the manual version though, because automatics aren't as much fun and don't give as much control. If you want a car that will keep trooping past 250k miles, this is the one for you. Take care of it and you will love it forever.

i purchased the truck used at 132k by a lady who had it serviced by toyota every 15k,the truck was still in EXCEllENT mechanical condition with no obvious rust atthe time. it since has developed rust at the bottom edges of the driver side door and i've sealed it with POR-15. we'll see if it holds up. Truck still runs like a swiss watch or in modern times like Seiko watch. fule economy has never been a strong suit avg's about 14-15 in comparison my new Aavalanche is 2 times the size and gets the same gas mileage. All in all it has never let us down. body is still tight and rattle free and the AC still blows cold from its original charge. I love my Toyota

Fun to drive, great gas mileage and goes anywhere. It can haul most things a pickup can haul and with the rear air/heat it's always comfy both front and rear. 23 miles per gallon but I replaced the big off road tires with what was supposed to be on there. Smooth and my wife and I love it. I didn't buy it because I had to. I had a brand new truck 6 months ago and sold it when I found this little 4x4 and am glad I did. A lot cheaper than most to insure, buy lic. plates for and just a blast to drive. I LOVE TOYOTA.

These engines tend to blow.

Toyota replaced the head gasket as part of their recall and 2 weeks later the engine blew. They didn't even guarantee their work. Suprisingly uncomfortable for an SUV. My knee's cramp up on long drives. I have long legs but I only stand 6' tall. The only thing I like about is the tire on the back. After 1991 they decided to put the spare under the back end which makes more difficult to change the tire.
