Ordered from the factory

Colorado Driver W/6 Cyl engine, 10/29/2021

2019 Subaru Outback 3.6R Touring 4dr SUV AWD (3.6L 6cyl CVT)

This car is virtually identical to the 2016 I owned. I ordered from the factory. I did that because I wanted the more powerful 6 cyl motor and this is the last year they were offering that motor. I needed it because of mountain driving and did not want the turbo 4 cyl motor which will jump in and out of turbo frequently while ascending the many steep grades in Colorado. The 6 cyl works just fine. I subsequently moved to the front range of Colorado and was glad I had the 6 cylinder. This car is virtually identical to the 2016. I like the "eye" which warns of lane departure and will "nudge" you through the steering wheel if you want when lane departure occurs, I have 30K miles on the tires and will need tires soon. The 2016 had a terrible battery problems until I replaced the OEM battery with an Exide battery. So far no similar problems with the 2019 battery. The biggest problem is the drivers seat leatherette cracked and needed replacement. That was identical to my experience with the 2016. Probably due to vinyl intolerance with seat heating in cold weather. It was a covered warranty item. The car handles the Colorado snow easily... even a 30 inch event. I won't be buying another Subaru because of poor engine performance with the 4 cylinder and 4 cylinder Turbo as the only option. I feel bad about that because of the overall high quality Subaru dealerships. But, there will likely be competitive brands with higher non-turbo horsepower units when I'm ready to trade.

Battery Drain!

car_enthusiast, 06/12/2022
2019 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl CVT)

I had brand new 2019 Subaru Outback limited. I really liked the car when I purchased and particularly I liked all these safety features. But for my experience, this car is not RELIABLE. The battery (for no reason) kept draining. Each time when I took it to the dealer, they told me that battery failed and they replaced it, but why the battery keeps draining, no answer? Imagine, you go outside, you are late to your work and you are rushing, but when you go yo your car, you even cannot open the door. This literally happened to me. Subaru makes all these advertisements that you take the outback and go for outdoors, camping etc. What happens if the car does not start when you go camping for two days? you are in the middle of no where? Because of this reason, I hated this car. I always kept a jump starter in my car, which I feel is absurd for a new car (not to mention that I never had this issue in my old cars). I was so much frustrated, and finally I sold it back. When I search it online I noticed that this is not just me, and there are many out there having similar issues. Other problems: Windshield broke, and fuel pump replacement. Summary, it is a good car but the bottom line is RELIABILITY and this feature was missing in this car. So, I do not suggest Subaru Outback to any person (until they solve this stupid problem).

Traded in my 2015 Outback with 182,000 miles in four years. Best car I ever had. Hoping the 2019 Outback has the same results. My sales guy Zach Stovall was young but very knowledgeable and extremely easy to deal with. Not pushy and patient.

Great vehicle with a ton of safety features I never knew I needed but will never want to be without. About 9 months after purchase I was in an accident with significant front end damage (over 20k in damages). All airbags deployed and I walked away with only a few scratches and counting my blessings! The vehicle held together unbelievably well with no frame damage so it can be repaired. Starlink activated, called for help and stayed with me on the line (for what seemed like forever) until help arrived. A priceless feature especially for people like me who live/travel in areas with spotty cell service. I have 18,000 miles on it so far and have had no issues with the vehicle quality at all. The only negative comment that I have is that the remote starter is suboptimal on this model; I highly recommend an upgrade.

Subaru No Longer Bulletproof

Just bought a 30K Subaru with all the bells and whistles. Great car and fantastic comfort. Subaru has worked out all the details with their infotainment and they are great at standing behind their product. Make sure you find a dealership that cares, as a quality dealership will make all the difference in the world. The car rides great and has fantastic visibility. The Eagle Eye system works without a flaw and the adaptive cruise control is fantastic. Great car and a must to have if you are looking for a well-built family car in any region and you want extra utility.

Lousy Starlink System

Tom R, 09/29/2019
2019 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl CVT)

Two things I dislike about the car. The Starlink infor system is poorly designed. You have to take your eyes off the road for too long a time just to change channels etc.. A warning message appears each time you start the car and won't go away if you push the "I Agree" line until the message time out. You can't do anything with the system until it times out (Only about 15 seconds though)Very sensitive touch screen - I've changed radio channels just by lightly moving across the screen. I had to go to 2 menus just to change the clock setting. I'm also not impressed with the road manners of this car. It seems to drift a lot and jumps when encountering a bump at highway speeds - glad I had both hands on the wheel one time! Other than these two issues, I have no other problems with the car. I don't think I would get another though.

Battery drain issues

Car battery keeps draining, took to dealership, and they charged me charge the battery, only for them to replace the battery a week later with same issue as warranty. Not even a month later and battery is drained again. Dealership stated these outbacks won't last a few days to a week without running.

Subaru, what were you thinking?!

I love driving this car. It's peppy, turns on a dime, holds the road on curves. It's fun to drive. The electronics are helpful and fairly intuitive. The only things that irk me about the car so far is (1) the seats could be a little softer. That seems to be a Subaru thing from one model to another, and (2) what in Heaven's name were the designers thinking when they chose the upholstery?! I didn't get the gold because it showed the dirt too much, so that eliminated some exterior colors. Apparently, a couple of colors have grey (I wish I'd known), but most are black. And it's not just black, it's nubby black. It collects and shows every tiny bit of lint, cat hair that might be on my clothes, dirt from the environment, whatever. Even sticky rollers (in use every day now) don't get it all off. Whatever happened to the cheerful, multi-colored heavy-duty reasonably neutral upholsteries Subaru used to use? They didn't show lint or dirt, wore like iron, and still looked good years down the line. Subaru, you need to include women on your design teams, and test the upholstery fabrics for practicality. So as to not go nuts trying to keep this car looking decent, I've invested $200 in leather-look seat covers front and back. We'll see how that goes. But it's an expense I didn't need.

Buyer Beware!

I had a Subaru Legacy but traded it in for a more functional vehicle for me at this stage of my life - the 2019 Outback. I have had nothing but problems with the car navigation, radio and bluetooth. None of those functions are reliable! Some days they work...and then most of the days they won't. I have had to take it into the dealership 4 times now. Finally, they agreed to replace the radio after updating the original with current software which didn't solve any of the problems. Great, I thought. Wrong! They replaced the radio with the same exact model/manufacturer they took out...however, the Subaru dealership says, "It has all the updated software". They had it at the dealership for a week after I continued to call and complain. However, the dealership couldn't "duplicate" the issues I've described. Everything is so inconsistent, I have a hard time "duplicating" what is going on...and they didn't use my car as I use it on a daily basis, so how can my experiences be "duplicated"? I have contacted Subaru headquarters and do have a case # and I'm continuing to jump through all their hoops as well as document extensively the issues that make me feel as though I'm driving a 10 year old car that is falling apart. Really loved my Legacy...but now, sadly, I'm not sure I'll be a life-long Subaru owner. I've even looked into trading it in...this is not worth all my time and stress!

The Smart Money is on Subaru

We've had our 2019 Outback for two years. Anything irritating, annoying, or disappointing issues would have popped up by now. Any problems that would have caused us to second guess our purchase would have become evident. But there's nothing. The car still performs just like I expect it to; meaning a smooth riding, smooth driving, supremely comfortable, utility station wagon that swallows up cargo like teenagers hoover up cheeseburgers. Driver's seat comfort is paramount because that's where you spend all your time. The Outback's front seats are very good. Just the right amount of padding and side bolster. One day on vacation I spent 10 hours behind the wheel with no ill effects. Interior touch surfaces are high quality. The cabin is quite spacious. Hold out for the Limited trim level (above the Premium level). It is worth the money. The additional features you get are blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, power passenger seat, driver seat memory functions (very handy if two people use the car), very nice leather upholstery, keyless ignition/entry, a crackin' 12-speaker Harman Kardon system (Ozzy and Iron Maiden never sounded so good), and a power lift gate which I quickly came to appreciate. Most Outback Limiteds came with a package that included navigation, a power moonroof, reverse automatic braking safety system, and nifty LED headlights that will turn about 15 degrees with the steering wheel. Edmunds says that the Outback "doesn't inspire much confidence when driven in a sporty manner." Anyone driving an Outback in a "sporty manner" is in the wrong car and is arguably an irresponsible driver. I have a Miata for the mountains and a Mini Cooper S for the track. No vehicle can do it all. The Outback's steering is nicely weighted and the turning circle is surprisingly tight. The brakes and suspension are just right for this type of car. Yes, the four cylinder engine is not quick but I don't need it to be. I don't know if you'd want to tow a boat, however. I drove an Audi A4 with a CVT and didn't like it. The Subaru CVT is a non-issue. It works just fine. What else? City mileage is rather disappointing; supposed to get 25, I get 19-20. However, on a long trip I got 39 which is 7 over the EPA estimate. So, if you have more money than you know what to do with or are ultimately more concerned with form over function and image then by all means get the Audi, BMW, Lexus, or whatever. I doubt that any of the so-called luxury brands have any significant features superior to the Subaru which justifies their price. If you are looking for real value and the most bang for your buck then the Subaru Outback (or even a Forester) is certainly worth serious consideration. And some serious cash will stay in your pocket.

I have ridden in older Outbacks and was not impressed with the hard seat and rough ride. My 2019 Outback is very comfortable and pretty quiet. Gas mileage on our trip to Florida was as high as 32.7 mpg. Around town it is a bit lower but still feel its sips gas and not guzzle. Visibility in this vehicle is outstanding. I've only had one chance to try the all-wheel-drive since buying this car and it worked perfectly. I usually buy Buicks, but am happy with this car and will stay with Subaru.

Loyal Suburu Owner

This is the seventh Suburu purchase in our household. I traded a 3 year old Outback premium in for this 2019 Outback Limited with all the bells and whistles. My Wife has a 2019 Forester Sport and my Daughter a 2017 Crosstrek. While this car is often used for towing a small utility trailer for yard supplies, it also retains enough of a luxury feel for a night out. My one complaint is that the original tires should be better and probably will be replaced long before they see much wear. An optional tire upgrade would have been appreciated. On the positive side, I love the ride quality, solid feel and maneuverability of this car, also the excellent safety ratings and confident feel in bad weather. The heated seats front and back are great for the winter although I do wish a heated steering wheel had been an option on the limited model as it's standard in the touring. While reviewers often feel that the engine is too slow, I find it to be more than adequate.

We had looked at the Subaru Outback for some time due the the high reviews and loyal ownership following. Finally in December 2018 we decided to make the plunge and buy a new Outback Limited. After a couple weeks negotiating with a couple different dealers we made an appointment to test drive and purchase the 2019 Outback. LTD. Our experience left us wishing that we had opted for a test drive before spending the effort required to get a good deal. Our local Dealership offers what they called "Stress Free Sales Experience" and we discovered that was not the case at all. We had dealt for days with an Internet Sales Manager and had an appointment with her, once at the Dealership we were passed off to a different sales person. Back to the vehicle. This young mad did have very good product knowledge and showed us the features of the Outback, and there were plenty. During the test drive my (the male half) noticed and commented on the very touchy and sensitive steering. Any driver input at all and the vehicle would move quickly within the lane. I suppose that you would "get used" to that but it was highly unusual and unnerving to say the least. The other thing that shocked me was the amount of road noise. It was awful to say the least. I will say that we are not used to or are comparing the Outback to any luxury vehicle, we both drive Nissan Altima's, one a 2013 and the other a 2010. We had actually driven to the dealership in our 2008 Ram 1500 4 x 4 truck, and the Ram was MUCH quieter than a brand new 2019 Limited Outback. All I can say is the Subaru design team needs to address the drivers steering input and overall noise levels. We were sadly disappointed and went back to the local Nissan dealer to drive a 2019 Altima with AWD. Go figure it was similar to our older Altima's and just as quiet....and less overall cost. We are Nissan owners again thanks to the test drive of the Outback.

Nice car but TERRIBLE seats

Previously leased a 17 Outback-drivers seat was just fine. Leased a 2019 Outback 3.6R Touring, and assumed that since it was substantially the same generation, the drivers seat would be the same. Boy was I wrong. By far the most hideously uncomfortable drivers seat I have ever experienced. It has a very pronounced lumbar curve so that, even with lumbar support fully retracted it feels like there is a horizontal log pressing into the middle of my back. Even after trying out a range of pillows to compensate, all with inadequate results, it is impossible to sit in the drivers seat for more than a few minutes without severe discomfort. The upholstery is also hard and unyielding-very uncomfortable. I would recommend that anyone considering this car spend an hour or so in the drivers seat to see if your back can stand it. Otherwise a nice vehicle. Still, can’t wait to get rid of it.

Updated Review

Final Update: I no longer own this vehicle. I traded for a '22 Outback XT with the turbo engine. The additional horsepower is awesome and makes a BIG difference! This is an update of my previous review. I've had the Outback for about two years and have gotten used to its quirks so I'm in a better position now to give an honest review. One thing to watch out for is the key fob. If you have it in your pocket and move the wrong way, you can accidentally open the liftgate while the vehicle is in your garage (or anywhere for that matter). If you don't catch it, you'll be left with a dead battery. Happened to me twice, and each time the Subaru roadside service I paid for was next to useless, so I bought a rechargeable jumper kit and keep it handy. I do think it's a design shortcoming that a vehicle with adaptive cruise control, adaptive headlights, automatic collision avoidance, lane departure/keeping, and blind spot monitoring isn't "smart" enough to turn the interior lights off to avoid a dead battery if the liftgate is inadvertently left open. The combination of the 2.5 L engine and CVT is anemic, but is adequate for most situations. Just leave plenty of time to pass on a 2-lane road! Overall the car is well built and looks nice. My dealer added a side molding that breaks up the slab-sided look nicely. I live in the southeast now so AWD isn't really necessary, but it's there for when I visit family up north where it snows a lot. Seats are moderately comfortable. Road noise is somewhat intrusive but livable. That may be due in part to the simple fact that it's a wagon so there's a lot of interior space for noise to reverberate in. Handling is good, possibly in part due to the AWD. Ride is good - comfortable without being 'floaty". The Harmon Kardon upgrade sounds better than the standard sound system, but too much emphasis is put on the front center speaker. I've tried multiple times to balance the sound to my liking, but just can't quite get there. After two years I've become used to it. I'm 67 years old and am a buttons, knobs, and dials guy so I don't like the touch screen, but I don't like ANY touch screens. They force you to take your eyes off the road to adjust things, and I believe they are responsible for numerous accidents. But it looks like they're here to stay so it is what it is. The 2020 version has an even more annoying touch screen. Speaking of the 2020 Outback, I drove one with the turbo four and was really impressed with the power! Overall, my 2019 is a good vehicle. It's safe (other than the aforementioned touch screen), reliable, and reasonably fuel efficient. To be honest I didn't like it for the first year or so, but once I got used to its oddities I'm reasonably pleased with it. I'll probably buy another one when it's time to trade.

My car is just barely passed 110,000 miles and it is constantly in the shop. I use the best oil and gas and take care of regular maintenance, but there are constant issues. I'm very disappointed with this car. I thought Subaru was supposed to be a high-quality vehicle, but the number of times I've needed 1000's of dollars of work is too many for such a young car. I've had other brands and they haven't needed near the amount of work. The oxygen sensors are always on the fritz. Today, the power steering started to leak. The brake support system has to be fully replaced. There has to be a more reliable car out there, but this one sure isn't it.

UPDATE: still no head unit available. Car is not good quality at all. First of all. Apart from the constant battery drain, my car has had its transmission rebuilt. Now the head unit/infotainement system is kaput. I have the extended warranty, but Subaru is taking a year for a replacement. Just for context, my car currently has 12.3k on the clock. I have babied this car. Worst and most unreliable car I have ever owned. DO NOT BUY. Poorly made, Subaru does not stand by its vehicles. These are not the same standard of Subarus in the past.

Still love this car. Gas mileage consumption after 30K is a bit better (28mpg) but still not 32 what is advertised. The back door lift motor is something that Subaru should take care of. If you leave your rear door open (or even if you close it but not all the way) it will silently run all the time and it will drain your battery over the short period of time. I am not an expert, but simple time switch or something should be done. If you drain your battery, this car cannot even open the rear door since there is no inside hatch. Other than that this car feels and runs as a luxury car. After 6 months and 12K on Outback I love this car. Only small blemish is that there is no way to get even close to 32 MPG. yes you can get it in the moment but my daily commute of 70 miles of freeway and 4 miles of the surface streets is giving me about 25 MPG which is still good but not as advertised. Other than that it is very reliable and safe car to drive. So far i love this car. Fuel economy is definetly under the advertised MPG, but I am hoping it will improve as i am lerning how to drive this new toy. I will update this review as time passes.

Dealership refuses to help solve this problem. Their solution.... "get used to it"! Will never purchase another Subaru! The 2019 model has changed the cruise control from bump to increase one MPH to bump and get 5 MPH increase. To only get one mph change, you have to take your eyes off the road, watch the small numbers in the dash, as they slowly change one at a time. Worse than texting while driving. Person who wrote manual does not comprehend math. Dashboard indicators are reversed... but company says... they are right... in the manual. Duh.

I do not feel safe or trust my Subaru. Its a shame as it is a good vehicle other than the fact it will cause me to get arrested at some point. The resume speed feature still does not work. I will be driving along on cruise at 65, I slow down to get into other lane but my auto does not resume speed, it picks up whatever vehicle is in front of it and takes on that speed. So 9 times of of 10, while driving on the highway I will look down and sure enough Im going 80 - 85 mph. My luck will eventually run out.

I have several friends that have Subaru Outbacks and they love them. I've had a different make of car every time I was in the market for a new car (Toyota, Mazda, Isuzu, Ford, Chevy, Acura). This time because of reputation I was either going to get a Honda or Subaru. I wish I would have gone with the Honda. I bought a 2018 Outback in March of '18. The first tank of gas I had, I ran out of gas at a red light. The mileage told me I had 60 miles to go!!! Then the Infotainment Center did not work. I kept getting all kinds of messages about errors and such. It would work sporadically and then just quit. Not so good when you're trying to following mapping directions. I immediately informed Subaru and they looked at it and said they can't find anything wrong. The gas mileage reading continued to be wrong as well. I called Subaru headquarters and after many, many hours on the phone with them and over a month of "fighting" with them, the dealership gave me a new 2019 car. The Sales Manager thought he was doing me a big favor by getting me one with a sunroof. I purposly picked the first one because I do not like nor wanted a sunroof but by this time I was so exhausted dealing with them, I took it. Returned to the Subaru dealer 2 days after I had the car saying that the Infotainment Center in this car also did not work with my Android (I had a brand new Samsung 8). It did work with my daughter's Iphone. I told them it looks like they need to buy me an Iphone. The Sales Manager chuckled and said "I guess we are going to be buying a lot of people Iphones" and they instantly wrote me a check for $750. I couldn't believe he found this to be funny. They low fuel alert still does not work correctly and I see there is now a class action lawsuit on the matter. NOW FOR THE BIGGEST PROBLEM... THE CAR BEEPS RANDOMLY!!!! I can be driving and it honks. Sometimes once, sometimes twice, sometimes 3 times. I can be sitting at a red light and it honks. There is no rhyme or reason. I have had it checked mulitple times by Subaru and they keep telling me they can't find anything. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the remote start. They are either too lazy to check that, too cheap to check it or just don't care. I again went in to the sales manager and he laughed. I told him I'm going to get hurt because other cars think I'm beeping at them. HE LAUGHED! I have only had this car for 2 years and I'm trading it in and going with another company. The customer service at my local Subaru is horrible. Disrespectful and arrogant. Oh did I mention I've had 3 batteries in two years in the second car. The one thing I do like about the car is how safe I feel and how well it handles in the snow. I'm pretty sure there have go to be other makes out there that have the same safety features.

I loathe the CVT ....My first outback experience was a 2008 with a 5 speed and I loved it so I was excited to get a brand new 2019 that was until I was introduced to the abomination referred to as a transmission. If the crosstrek comes with a manual transmission option why not the outback?? The only saving grace I found was my car came wonderfully devoid of all that techno nonsense lane assist and avoidance junk. If one needs that to be a safe driver then one has no business being on the road. The one thing that puzzles me though is I purchased the "touring" model...one would think being classified as a "touring" car it would be equipped with "touring" features like say an infosystem integrated GPS? NOT. Sorry Subaru someone dropped the ball there....epic fail. Overall build quality and reliability are second to none...a very impressive ride over all

Unbelievable the versatility you get with an outback. I should have switched sooner. Came from an Audi and while this thing isn't going to win a track race it makes up for it in versatility and good tech on the inside. Absolutely love the Touring trim which has nicer leather than my Lexus or my Audi.

Constant electrical issues. Took 5 attempts to get windows to close properly and still occasionally won’t close. Issues with the radio. Touch screen stopped working. Replaced. 5 days later could not change stations and the Apple Play stopped working. Once radio just shut off. Was told it needed an update. It shuts down for that? Constant issues with Apple Play. Seats are cracking and ripping and I only have 65k miles on it. Huge disappointment. Will never purchase a Subaru again. Oh, and I drive 30 miles to a dealership because the closet dealership to me is an absolute horribly business. So yeah…stay away from Subaru.

We purchased the Touring V6 Subaru Outback with ALL the bells and whistles which is the absolute top of the line offering. We love all its safety features, the handling when driving, lane departure warning, blind spot alert when a vehicle is in your unseen area, the automatic tailgate opening & closing, and since it is 7 inches longer than the Subaru Forester it feels like you are riding on a cloud sort of like driving a large Cadillac! This will be the last car we will have. Right now we have 4 vehicles. We are giving our son who is heading off to 8 plus years in college our very low mileage 2017 Nissan Altima which should serve him well and give him excellent gas mileage while he is completing his engineering course.

Coming from a 2014 forrester, we always liked the durability, allwheel drive traction and high level of safety. We were always interested in another Subaru, but also looked at other SUV’s (Kia Telluride). Our biggest issue with the Forrester was the cheap hard plastics and tinny door feel. But from the minute we tired out a newer Outback. The the doors close with much improved feel as are the massively improved interior materials. Out 3.6R uses top quality materials with high touch factor. They just feel nicer, certainly better than the Forrester, but equal to my BMW M3.

My Outback was purchased new 18 months ago and just turned 6000 miles. I did the first service at 6 months, the fuel pump recall was done at about 5000 miles and the 6000 mile service was just completed. The car has been problem free and my dealer from sales to service has been impressive beyond expectations with one question to be noted later in this review. The safety features are great, the leather interior is beautiful and comfortable, even luxurious one could say, the car drives well with good performance and visibility. With the roof rack and storage capacity the car has great function without giving up style. It is a good value considering the cost and competition. The 4 wheel drive was not something I was looking for and I have yet to need the feature but based on reviews have no concerns when conditions are present. In fact foolishly I'm looking forward to giving it a test drive in the next snow storm. Covid has reduced the miles driven and eliminated any serious thinking re longer trips but that will change in the coming year. I'm looking forward to hitting the road in this vehicle. In my experience the HWY MPG is about on in the low 30's at legal speed limits using cruise control but I'm in no way getting the advertised mid 20's on in town driving. Low 20's driving around town and I'm not a heavy footed gas pedal type driver. My noted exception to great dealer service was at my 6000 mile service when I was expecting a free oil change and thinking the experience would be like to the service at 6 months which in fact was free. The oil change was free but I was caught by surprise and "sold" both oil and gas additives as part of the service and additives were not free. As I said, caught by surprise, and lacking information I accepted what I was told that additives were more than a good idea to keep the vehicle in first class shape. I want to keep the car in first class shape in every way but upon investigation am not convinced that "additives" are necessary or needed or even recommended by Subaru when it comes to maintenance or warranty. In this case the additives benefited the dealer but I'm not convinced that it benefited me or the car. As is said, let the buyer beware and at the next service I will reject the additive option if it comes up. Subaru's of every year, style and age are everywhere in my area, the older versions having thousands of miles on the odometers, they might be showing their age and use but just reliably keep running and are loved by their owners. Overall I'm impressed with my car, also the dealer and looking forward to some road adventures in 2021. Updated comments on my initial review. My Outback is showing 10,000 miles and is scheduled to have the 2 year service next week. I remain impressed with the vehicle. Since the initial comments I have taken two longer trips and was pleased with the 34.5 average mpg attained. My initial grade on this car was an A, as of now I would increase that to an A+. The car just gets better, this is an exceptional automobile and a pleasure to drive. My Outback continues to be problem free excellent transportation. I have owned many cars over my nearly 70 years of driving and this vehicle hands down is the best so far. Subaru has figured out what the personal transportation experience should be. I am nearing my four and a half year service and the Outback continues to perform as reported earlier with no issues. The vehicle is a pleasure to drive I can see myself happily driving this vehicle for a long time in the future. I appreciate the Subaru Company reaching out to owners with frequent emails and the Magazine keeping owners up to date of Subaru activities and new products. They are successful in making Subaru ownership a family thing. Something not easily achieved in the business world of today.

Subaru has lost its reputation

Bladerunner1, 08/13/2022
2019 Subaru Outback 2.5i 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl CVT)
1 of 1 people found this review helpful

I bought a 2019 Outback new in Oct 2018. It's a shame. By almost any comparison, the Outback is a lot more car than the Honda CRV. I've had Honda Civics, Accords, and several Honda motorcycles. I give Honda 5 stars for all of them and 5 stars for standing behind their vehicles. Subaru had a similar word-of-mouth reputation. If you want a car to take anywhere, the CRV won't really compare--although it's slightly cheaper and has slightly better mpg. Choosing the Outback made sense. Now, here's what happened. Three weeks after I brought it home, a crack started at the bottom center of the windshield. I Googled the issue and, yes, to my chagrin, only then discovered it was an ongoing problem and Subaru had recently lost a class-action suit--but not for cars produced after the suit was filed in 2016. I took it back to the Tucson dealership. I will never forget the stony face of the service rep telling me the windshield was my problem and he knew nothing about a class-action settlement. Three months later, suddenly the car would turn over vigorously but not start. Well, so it wasn't the battery or the starter. I had it towed. To my surprise, Subaru said they would not provide a loaner while it was fixed. Honda always did--without being asked. Three business days later, when I talked to service, the rep said they were still trying to figure out what was wrong, "but we don't think it was the starter or the battery." Ya think? Two more business days after that, they said it was ready. When I (cringing) spoke to the service rep this time, he announced importantly that it was a faulty fuel pump--but not to worry, my car had received the newest and most advanced model they had. What kind of place was this? I replied that I was certain they had simply replaced the bad pump with the very same model. I was just plain dumbfounded that it had taken five working days to divine that a car that turns over with enthusiasm but doesn't start should have its fuel pump checked first thing. A year later, Subaru issued a recall on the Outbacks for the fuel pump. Since then, I have heard many word-of-mouth anecdotes from other current and former Outback owners. It's too bad. In many ways, it's still a better choice than the CRV, but Honda has always had my back. In 2020, I traded the Outback and got a fantastic deal. The dealership goes out of its way to let you know they still remember you once you drive your purchase off the lot. More importantly, my Hondas never break down. Ever. Sorry, Subaru. Your customer relations suck and your Outbacks are no longer reliable.

I traded my 2005 Outback 2.5XT for a 2019 Outback 3.6R Limited back in May of 2019. The '05 had 179,000 miles on it and the clutch was starting to go. I thought I'd miss the turbo, but the big six provides similar performance. I've only put 15,000 miles on the vehicle due to COVID, but I'm pleased with it so far. I now have 23,800 miles on my Outback and it's doing great. The mileage is low because I'm retired and have another car that I drive sometimes. I now have 27,500 miles on my Outback and I've had no issues. I have about 33,000 miles on the car and I'm very happy with it so far. I have about 36,200 miles on the car and I'm still happy with it.

Update, 7/2023: 4 years and 40k miles in. It's my favorite car ever, even if I make allowances for the tech changes that have happened over 50 years of driving. Road trips still get me 35 MPG unless it's mostly mountains. It's been a highly dependable, low cost, low maintenance, easy-to-drive vehicle for me. My only problem has been that sometimes Android Auto and the Subaru screen tech refuse to play with one another. (This usually goes away if I "delete" and reinstall Android Auto on the phone. Why couldn't either Android or Subaru simply toss out an error message, rather than aborting Android Auto and leaving me in the dark?) I got the Outback rather than the Forester because it's a bit narrower, and thus easier for me to park. It's my 2nd Outback and it's probably the best road tripping car of anything I've owned. The ride is comfortable, it's quiet, it sits very solidly on the road and has tons of space. I'd driven through snowstorms including noreasters, up block-long icy driveways (I ski), and through 5 inches of mud (a primitive boat ramp). Nothing stops it. I folded down the 2 rear seats and carried 2 new rocker-recliners 150 miles with the hatch down and space left over. Combined city/highway is about 29MPG with the 4 cylinder; on flat interstates I've seen 34MPG @ 65. Twice I've gone over 600 miles on a tank of gas. It's a great set of wheels!

This is my second outback. Their AWD is amazing. I've been in river mud 4" deep and snow 6+" deep and easily drove through. And I put 2 rocker recliner chairs in the back and closed the hatch (yes I took the backs off first). I still had space for bags for 2 of us, plus purchases we made on the trip. I love mine!

Star link nightmare

Car is great handling on the road. Subaru put a 3G star link system in the 2019 model, drains the battery. Work with the advocacy group for replacement and their custom service/ dealership was not good. Everyone acts oblivious to the issue until you call them out and they suddenly know what the issue is. First estimate to fix was 900.00 few months later the part dropped to 280.00 and 240.00 for labor. Subaru gave me very poor customer support. I studied the circuit and bypassed the circuit from being always on. My repairs cost was under 20 dollars and all features work. Shame on subaru for not owning the problem and fixing it.

Spacious and comfortable interior. I have the 2.5i Limited and, for living in the mountains of Vermont, the smaller engine is very capable and responsive. It's not a sports car by any means, but the comfort, technology, ride, and AWD all provide a confident driving experience.

You need to learn the various technological stuff it has, but that's why you have the manual, and in our case, a good dealership that supports.
