I loved this car!

We bought this car with 56,000 miles on it in 2002 and have loved it very much. It drives well in all weather, can take a beating from out rough lifestyle, and cleaned up nicely to fit in when we had go to the city. It was very reliable and was well built. We had put about 149,000 miles on it as of Jan. 2006 when it was squished on the highway. The anti-lock brakes where great because it got stopped to avoid the collision ahead (only 4 feet to spare); too bad the Dodge truck behind it could not stop that well. At the time of the accident it was running like a champ and we expected to have it for a long time to come. Hope I can find another one!

Expensive fixes!

It is a great car, but stay away from anything from the mid-west or north-east. The fuel filler neck will rot away, the tank will leak (which requires the disassembly of the whole back end to remove and replace) Stay away from automatics not reliable . The doors will rot away with the brake lines. The exhaust system is among the most costly to replace of any mass-produced vehicle(2 catalytic converters a mid-pipe resonator, and an expensive muffler. Seals and timing belt, etc. is a must after 100,000. Stay away from the 2.5 unless it already had the head gasket replaced.Th The 2.2 is the champ. I have put over $4000 in this vehicle since i bought it last year. Not an economy fix

Well, this isnt my car. Its my dads and so far the whole family is impressed with it. I am 15 years old and this car is great for learning how to drive. The car came with ABS, AWD, Dual Air Bags, and more. It drives well but it is a bit harsh on bumbs. It is very fun to drive too. It is fast compared to other station wagons in its size and it is not that big. This car also saved my life. My family was involved in a car accient and nobody got hurt. The damage wasnt that bad and so we got it repaired and my dad is still driving it

Winter beater that lasts

I bought a 14 year old Legacy wagon last year as a winter beater, which i planned to keep until upgrade to a newer and better car in the spring. One year later I'm still looking for that 'better car' but haven't found it yet. This car has taken me cross country twice in the past year, over the Rocky mountains (strangely it got better gas mileage at high elevation), and plowed effortlessly through 18 inches of snow! I had to replace a front strut assembly after the coil spring broke around 180,000 miles. It doesn't like to hold its idle speed, not sure what the problem is. And the 'check engine' light keeps popping up, common problem it seems. Otherwise it's great, best car i've ever bought!

A plain, unassuming car, but very reliable overall. AWD is handy, esp. in ice/snow. Disappointing gas mileage for a 4 cyl. Cup holder an abject failure. Horizontally opposed 4 (get the 2.2, not the 2.5) is dated but very reliable. (Thank you, Dr. Porsche, for the concept). Auto. trans. is a balky Borg-Warner unit. Ugh. Shades of Rambler. Car is too low slung, but corners well. I installed a cut-out switch to select FWD or AWD, which helps with fuel economy. (Why did Subaru eliminate that feature?). One of those cars which, despite its faults, grows on you, and is a worthy ride. My next car will have to compensate for the Legacy's plain vanilla persona. Perhaps a Caprice Police Interceptor?

Great Car, Affordable Maintenance

Roomy, roof rack, 20-26mpg, the last year Subaru did front-wheel drive on this model, and still it handed really well in the snow and on ice (tires make a big difference too). This model has one of the most reliable engines Subaru ever made. The L is always manual transmission. I bought this car in 2012 with 150k miles on it, sold it with near 210k miles on it. I had to replace both boots twice in the time I had it, but I drove pizza delivery with it so went over the same speed bumps and tracks many more times per day than average. I also needed to do the head gaskets once, a known Subaru gremlin, but everything else was just routine scheduled maintenance. For its age, this car handled well, was comfortable for passengers and accelerated quickly. Incredibly reliable, I would have kept it were I not ready to upgrade. I'm guessing the one I drove will run another 100k+, these things run forever if cared for. I liked this car so much I got another Subie.

In 6.5 years, I've only spent $450 on repairs. This wagon has gone through upstate NY winters and now deals with the Virginia summers. A solid performer if you do the recommended maintenance. Not necessarily as cool as a sedan, but the Outback's now are a good option. Buy one of these used for a decent car.

I bought my LS Wagon in '99 with about 60k miles on it. It now has about 100k, almost 3 years later. This is a great reliable car. With certain cars, like the VW's I used to own, I had to put a lot of money in by 100k miles. Not this car. Just basic maintenance- tires, brakes, oil, fuel filter. I did have the 90k mile tune up done for $800, which was worth it, cause this car runs and runs. Very roomy for 4 adults and dog. Pack it up for ski trips, handles great in snow. The ride is a little low- wonder if the Outback is better. Excellent vehicle. Obviously Subaru Legacy wagons are great cars since I see older models on the road everyday.

This is my first car I bought and I gotta admit it is pretty sweet to drive, Very reliable in the snow as some people have already said. You'd think this car with 472k km on it would run like crap but with High octane gas man this thing goes pretty good. I'd recommend this car to anyone.

Bought this Brighton in '04, with 160k miles. Now it is 2018 and it has 215k. Much of it is on rough dirt roads. But it is still a satisfying road car with AWD. The mpg was 30 when bought and has dropped to 25. Everything works. It needed a first clutch at 190k and new struts at 205k. Tires last as they should which means alignment holds on dirt/gravel roads. I have no serious complaints about this car. Fortunately I have discovered an honest local mechanic who only works on Subes. All other troubles were mostly with mechanics who were rip-offs or did not know Subarus. There is no rust and the upholstery is fine. Others have mentioned the 2.2 engine. It is the best thing about early 90s Subarus. Avoid the 2.5 in late 90s model Legacy as it has head gasket problems.

I just had an accident with my 95, and the insurance company has chosen to total it, but I will really miss it, and look forward to my next Subaru. With 124,000 miles, it still got 28-30 mpg on the highway, could hold an amazing amount of cargo, and was great in the snow. Sure, it leaked a little oil like most old Subies, but not enough to have to add any. Had some wind noise around the driver's door, and no mechanic could ever figure out the vibration that happened between 60 & 80 mph, but nothing that made me regret buying it. It's a great practical car.

I'm a poor college student, so this was a great choice of car for me. It was very affordable, and I know I can rely on it to last until I'm done with college. It's roomy, gets good mileage, and with teh five speed transmission it's fun to drive. The additional cargo room is a huge plus when moving back and forth between home and school. The exterior looks great, so even though I'm driving a station wagon, it doesn't cramp my style.

I was handed down my '95 Subaru Wagon from my father. The Suby' currently has 231,000 miles on the odometer at the moment and has been virtually problem free. Great in snow, just push the gas and it takes off with no tire slippage. My tranny thunks a little bit sometimes when it kicks into second gear, but with this many miles on the car, it's understandable. I keep up with its regularly scheduled oil changes, and have even gone over a few 1000 miles before. The Subaru continues to run smoothly and efficiently. Just had some maintenance work done to her in order to pass my state inspection. My mechanic said the car looks excellent underneath and I should hold onto it. I plan on it.

Owned since new. Absolutely no issue at all with about 150,000 miles. Solid, reliable and simply the best AWD system available, period. No leaks, no rattles and never a breakdown or problem at all. If anyone tells you Subaru has problems they probably do not perform routine care. We have owned Subaru since the late 70's and will buy again. living in Northern New England, there is no mroe reliable care than a Subaru for all seasons.

We have owned the car for almost a year. Bought it over eBay, and are very pleased. The AWD system is almost flawless (could use locking differentials), and gets where most cars only dream of going in the winter. The 2.2L engine has adequate power - go for a newer GT with the 2.5L if you want more. Love the luggage space, back seat room, front seat room, etc. Factory Panasonic CD with tweeters in the door sounds great, but needs a little more low-end. The ride and handling is great - Subaru's heritage in rally racing pays off with long-travel suspension that soaks up any road imperfection!

We bought this used with 95000 miles from a dealer in 1999 for $6500, we have had the car for 5 years now, and the only work we have had done is brakes, spark plugs, and belts. The car has 160,000 miles and runs great, no problem with the a/c, we drove in 12 inch snow during a bad snowstorm and it had no problem, passing up more expensive and prettier cars. Great Reliability. For snow country this is a wonderful machine.

I got my 95 Legacy LSi wagon in 1997 with 28k miles on him. Sadly, he was totaled while parked in Apr 2004 with 110k miles. Honestly, this is the best car ever. NC, NY, CT, CA: this car handled all weather types perfectly, and he was the King of Tahoe and San Fran. No major unscheduled repairs. The leather interior was in great shape even after 10 years. Gas mileage never went below 25 on the highway. Loved blowing by the SUVs that were stuck on the nasty Tahoe roads. My mechanic said he expected the car to last for 300k miles, and I had every intention of keeping him that long. Now I just have to decide which one of his relatives to buy next!

I've owned 2 Subaru Wagons for 18 years. I've found them to be reliable & easy to handle, especially the range of the steering wheel. The cargo area is quite attractive with the cover to conceal all items. I have always maintained my vehicles be- cause I dread having my car break down in the middle of nowhere. I also have a complete record of all maintenance & repairs to this vehicle for anyone to peruse. My most recent maintenance included brake work and oil change. The tires are in good condition & are con- stantly rotated in order to keep them balanced. A wagon makes a good family car because it's roomy & has plenty of space for lots of baggage.

I have not a single complaint about this car. It did it's job and did it very well! I never worried about it leaving me stranded going any distance in any weather conditions. It went on cross country trips, in the woods (on and off trails!) and did great! Spent its entire life in the Rocky Mountains. It held up like a champ, till the last few months I had it. At 180K I had to replace the alternator and then the keyway on the crankshaft broke. Some JB weld and she was going again. Then a solenoid in the tranny was bad causing the AWD to have problems, i,e. wheels dragging when wheel turned tightly. I sold it for next to nothing at 185,000. Still miss it soo much!! Can't wait to get another!!

The '95 was the first year of the Outback, which was really nothing more than a Legacy Wagon with two-tone paint and more rugged interior. I absolutely loved this car. I drove it on many a long road-trip. It was perfect (snow, desert, city traffic). Crank shaft sensor needed to be replaced, but that's about it in 10 years of ownership. Completely reliable. I'm almost sad that I moved on (to a 2005 Outback), but I wanted side-curtain airbags because now I have a child. I had the manual 5-speed. This car never let me down.

We bought this car with 120K miles on it. Now it has 160K and is still running strong. It does excellent in the snow, and we have only had to do the regular maintenance on it. Had a '92 Subaru wagon before this one with 180k that was still going strong with no problems until it got totaled. Unfortunately, the wagons will not fit 3 car seats in the back, so we have to search, very reluctantly, for something else. We will dearly miss our Subarus! Interior has held up well, with 3 kids and a dog and numerous camping trips. Speedometer does some weird tricks. Hauls 3 bikes, a rocketbox, and snowboards easily on top. Mechanically exceptionally sound. Where is the Subaru minivan?

I'm the original and sole owner of my 1995 Legacy L wagon. As of July 07 it has 125000 miles and is going strong. Three years ago I bought a 2nd, newer Subaru thinking I'd sell the '95 after another winter. Well, I'm still attached to it because it's just SO reliable. Engine needed new oil gaskets at about 95000 mi, that's about it. It's a 5 speed manual with original clutch. Changed oil and rotated tires every 5000 milies and the car stays happy. Like other reviewers, my gas gauge is weird... use the trip odometer. Car still gets ~26 mi to gallon.

This is an awesome car. Confidence driving in any weather. Incredibly reliable.... point and go in any weather. I've had this car for almost 9 years and can't tell you how many times accidents were avoided because my car would hold the road and maneuver when others could not. If you take care of this car, change the oil regularly and mind the maintenance, it'll reward you well for many-many years and miles. All members of my family own at least one Subaru (no dealers, just happy customers). There aren't many products on the market (even beyond cars) that I can speak as confidently about than with Subaru.

I was the second owner of my Subie, purchased at 156k, and I just sold it to a friend with 208k on it. It's an oldie, but still a goodie. This is one of the most reliable transmissions Subaru ever made. I've had performance people stop me and tell me I have one of the best models, and have had others offer to by my wagon at the grocery store! Still a popular car that I have seen sell higher than it's value because people know how good they are. Despite modest specs, this car accelerates faster than you'd expect and has been great for urban driving. This car is RELIABLE and will run even with the worst of leaks. Non interference engine unlike later Subies and most Japanese cars of this era - aka if the timing belt snaps, it won't destroy your engine. I drove on a blown crank seal unknowingly for 1k miles, and it didn't break down on me or ruin the engine/transmission. That was in the middle of a 4K mile road trip, and it ran great the rest of the trip and beyond. I delayed my scheduled timing belt job (where they would have checked/replaced the seal) and took it on a trip (stupid, my mistake not the car). This car is very forgiving to abuse, more so than it's automatic counterpart. Subarus are prone to leaky gaskets and axles wearing quicker than other cars. Small price to pay for the reliability, upkeep parts and maintenance are affordable. I fully expect this car to run another 200k if properly maintained. Change all fluids and complete maintenance on time, and this car will last FOREVER. I got great mileage too, higher than I was supposed to likely because I'm easy on my clutch. I pulled 25 city and around 30 highway - the last year Subie made front-wheel drive, and it's a good one. I only sold my car because I needed to upgrade for my job - otherwise I would have driven this car forever! For an oldie, it has cruise control, power mirrors and doors, stock speakers could be a lot worse, and although the door seals aren't great I feel WAY less of the road than some of the 15 year newer cars I test drove to replace it. If seeking a great cheap older manual transmission car I can't recommend this model enough. On par with the Accord or Camry, and a bit more fun to drive (in my opinion). Incredibly space efficient for its size. I've moved furniture in it with the backseat down. Best for city driving vs long commutes, there are better cars out there mileage-wise. I've never put money into this car beyond routine maintenance and odd interior things that fall apart with age (it IS a 20 year old car). My only complaint is that the cup-holder is poorly placed right by the front vents, easy to spill in there - and they only hold a pop can or smaller, hard to find coffee cups that fit. For it's age and year, it's a great car that will live forever! If you're on a budget, you can't go wrong with a 95 L Wagon if it's been reasonably well-maintained.

This has to be the best car ever made. Despite harsh Michigan winters it is 21 years and still running great! The engine is still very quiet & runs like it did 15 years ago. This car handles like a sports car! Snow performance is the best. (I also have a 2012 Outback & this 95 is much better in snow & the 2012 handles like a marshmallow in comparison.) I have backed this car out of the driveway after a huge snow fall while my neighbor sat and spun in his pick up truck. The car must be perfectly weighted for going through the snow. This body style also had a ton of cargo room! It has more cargo area with the rear seat up then the 2012 does. With the split seat I have been able to have a passenger in the back seat plus my 80 pound dog in a large dog crate. I am having suspension problems now & exhaust problems. But hey after 21 years that is to be expected. Since I can't do the work myself it would likely be expensive to get it done. I will just keep driving it and see how long it will last. If you can find one of these cars, or a car with this engine - buy it!! Note to Subaru! Please do not angle off the back end of the Impreza & Outback, it really cuts into the cargo room. This body style is just right! Not too big but still amazingly holds a ton of stuff. Also, lower the outback and make a true wagon, because that is what this 95 is. Bring back this car!
