142,000 miles
I bought this new and had to have the engine replaced after 50,000 miles even with routine maintenance. The dealership did pay half the cost though. The battery also has to be replaced every 3 years and dies without warning; and I've had 3 alternators. Most of these problems occurred in its earlier years, it seems to have mellowed with age so I'll hang on to it. The interior is starting to fall apart however.
My 1995 Saturn SC!
I have a 25 year old Saturn SC 1 which I bought right out of the show room, and since then, knock on wood I have never ever had a major problem with this car. It has travelled far and wide, and feels the same to handle as it did the day I drove her off the lot. If I have to mention a problem or two, I'd say first the "Check Engine" light keeps coming on. I've taken her to 3 mechanic's and none of them could fix the problem, so I just ignore it. And with that come problem number 2. Namely it is hard to find parts. GM Canada has next to none, and since there are no longer an Saturn dealerships, there's no parts or factory trained mechanic's to repair this one and only problem. My mechanic is a wiz, but this one has him stumped big time. I love my Saturn whom I've named Suzi, after a girl I know, and won't let her go. She's been more than good to me, and I try and do my best for her. Looking forward to another 25 years of comfortable and enjoyable driving.

Gas Sipper
I bought the car for one thing, gas mileage. I think this car is basically under the radar in terms of people knowing about the great gas mileage. My first tank shows 34.9 MPG in city driving! It is slow, but you really don't need anything fast in rush hour traffic. I'm very impressed so far. Take it easy on the gas pedal and the car will return excellent numbers! This car will pay for itself in no time! Great buy!
1995 Saturn SC-1 Coupe
I bought this car in 2004 with 113,000 miles. I continue to drive this car to this day and the car now has 190,000 miles. The car has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. The only repairs that I have needed to perform on this car is changing the battery once, alternator once, front brakes twice, and change the oil twice a year myself with full synthetic mobil one oil. Recently took the car on a 1,000 mile round trip to vegas, achieved 39 mpg, averaging 70 mph. Driving home was 80-85 mph and dropped to about 36-37 mpg. I average about 31 mpg in city and highway driving. I could not be more pleased with my Saturn!
Buy one, you won't be sorry!
I have owned my Saturn for seven years. It has 89,000 miles on it and I have never had problems with it. It is a very fun car to drive, has great gas mileage and is reliable. I can recommend the Saturn SC2 coupe with confidence.
Outdated but good nonetheless
Bought this one new in 1996 and it's been a great car. I feel sad that one day I'll get rid of it. The reliability has been tremendous, the engine is good for a car this cheap, the handling is pretty ok too. The styling is outdated now though (and may have been when it was new too!)
Most reliable car ever owned
Bought this car in 2000 with 60,000 miles. This was the most reliable car I have ever owned. Routine maintenance performed along with replaced alternator and serpentine belt and that's it, in nine years! Excellent gas mileage. The interior however is very cheaply made. Alot of cheap plastic, not built for comfort. But those who want a practical car...very good! No rust, sporty looking. Not very powerful either.
My little purple car
Hey all,I bought my little sc-1,back in 2002,other than a few minor mods and minor upkeep, its been a great little car.I admit its a bit small, and sluggish at times, but once you toon it up right,it runs great.I read somewhere in its specs, that there only rated to get 28 mpg.Thats interesting since mine now, gets 36 mpg on the hwy,and 32 in town. The secret is a good,Cold air intake, and the right plugs, with a combination of a good muffler.
Best car ever
I've had this car for 2 months and it been great. I bought it for $700. It has 285,000 miles on it and keeps going. Just burns I little oil but for the mileage you cant beat it.
Great Little Car.
I got my SC2 about 5 years ago and love it. It get an average of 36-39 MPG. I put a clutch in it at 140000 miles and 2 water pumps but that's probably because i got the reman pumps. The only downfall is my AC has never worked right. I took it to an AC mechanic and they said it was fixed. 270 dollars later still no ac. I think this is just my car. My friends Saturn's AC is so cold the windows fog up. I'm about to buy another Saturn next week. One more thing. The bushing inside the shifter broke. I had only 3rd and 4th gear. It was 20 bucks off ebay. No biggie.
Amazing Little Car
This is an Amazing little car. I was 16 years old when i bought this car with my own money back in June 2009 for $800. It had 210000 miles on it. I have put 13,000 miles on it in 11 months with me driving it. The thing still runs amazing i have been through one set of tires on it and have not had one mechanical thing go wrong with it. I have to put one quart of oil in it every 500 miles, but that is not bad at all. I think its the best $800 dollars i have ever spent. would recomend to anyone!!!
Built to Last
Seems I've had a similar experience to everyone on here. I had to replace my alternator 3 times in 190,000 miles, belt tension, pumps, no engine or transmission problems. I've been hit at high speeds twice, and the car held up well, especially against the fort explorer at 50 mph, amazingly well actually. The car has never let me down, when something breaks you know it's coming. I want to get a new car, but i keep thinking. How much more can this thing go??? I've had it since 1999 and this thing has saved me a lot of money. I know when i turn the key its going to start. I think my car is actually coming back into style I've had it for so long :)
Oil Burner!
It seem to burn 1 quart for every 1200 miles I drive. The environment is suffering, don't buy!
Great dependable car
What can I say. Great gas mileage, reliable, fun to drive, and wnn't dent or rust. Still has a contemperary design.
#2betterthan#1
With this car, started off with a 76 mi per day commute. NEVER failed me. Moved farther from work and went to 96 mi per day. Failed me once, needed a battery. Changed job location, to 164 mi per day commute. Never failed me. Operates flawlessly at any hiway speeds. Change the oil when I'm suppose to, don't skimp on maintenance issues. It's nudging 152K mi. expect at least 250K.
Bang for your buck!
I've put on 135,000 miles in a little over seven years, and I've never had to do any major maintenance outside of the standard schedule. I had to have a few minor things repaired (all I can remember is a belt tensioner), but I've never really spent more $200 on any single problem that I didn't cause. The thing still runs pretty much the way it did when I first bought it.
one car owner 168,000
exceptional car one car owner all of 168,000 miles with excellent serviceability, nice curves, no problem with pop up lights
Never again
Would think more highly of the car if the dealers stood behind their claims. Put oil in every 500-1000 miles. Driver's window leaks.
Great value on 4 wheels
My 1996 SC2 is an exemplary car,and if not startling permormance it's at least an adaquate compromise between power and economy. What it lacks in zip, it makes up in reliability. Change the oil, do the scheduled maintainence and drive with confidence. The only mechanical failure was a cruise control unit that died in extreme cold weather and was replaced under warantee. Saturn dealerships are an additional side benefit. No matter which one I've stopped in; the service has been first rate. If you don't buy a Honda this is the car to buy.
Oil and brakes!
This car is cute, but Im constantly putting oil in the car and Ive replaced the BRAKES at least 4 times in 4 years! It also goes through brake fluid quite often. Sometimes I have to add more 2 or 3 times a year! I really enjoyed the car for the first 2 years. It was zippy and fun to drive, but then it started to eat up oil! Its NOT A FAMILY CAR! Overall I would say this car is a Money Pit! Dont waste your money on a Saturn! Buy a Toyota or Mazda!
This care changed my view of Saturn!
I am a very stuburn person when it comes to cars. I dislike American cars and I never wanted one. But I wanted a car fast so i bought the 1995 Saturn SC2 and it changed my view of Saturn forever. It is a great car. It is fun to drive, has good feul economy and it looks good as well. I would recommend the car for a person who is looking for their first car.
Best money I've never spent
I was given this as a present from my brother-in-law (who lived up north) and set in a carport for over a year before being driven. Yet, it's done just fine and has only had one major mechanical problem. For a "point A to point B" driver, it works just fine. Maybe not the pep you would expect (I hated taking it on the interstate) but drives ok through the city.
Reliable
I bought my car last summer and it has run good every day. I recently drove my car across Ohio with no problems. I am satisfied.
a car you can beat on
I bought this car 5 years ago and it finally died yesterday. The head gasket blew and took the radiator with it. I learned to drive stick on this car and I put A LOT of city miles on it. I drove it halfway across the country several times and never had the slightest problem with it. This is a great little car.
It's a mover
So far, so good. The little coupe moves me around Atlanta with no problem. It burns a lot of oil though. (Keep a 5 quart jug in the trunk) It is a fast 5 speed for just 127hp. It is a nice sporty looking car as well. Great on gas. Runs like it wants to stay around for a while. We will see what happens!
Very Reliable
This Saturn was my first car, and so I didn't know much about maintaining it. I bought it for $5280 with 69K miles on it, and now,4 yrs later, It has 125K miles on it and just now broke down on me. I have gotten great use out of it, especially on road trips. It has far outlasted what I expected. The interior was the first thing to fall apart on me, but the engine was pretty good to me. Great gas mileage. Thumbs up for reliability.
Farewell, old friend
I bought this car in late '94, and she has served me like a faithful friend for ten years, taken me across the country several times and to thousands of days of work. Only major problem in all this time - alternator went out last winter. Replaced and was good to go. I'm moving up to a new car (small cars have come a looong way in 10 years, I've found) but kinda sad to be trading her in.
Cannot find the replacement
I bought this stick, basic-loaded car in January 2001. It was used with 85k put by the prior owner and former crash (it was fixed) of the front. Currently I have 137k (20k this year) and it did not indicate major problems (X-finger). Surely the exterior is not like in new car and I damaged the interior ceiling cover accidentaly by hitting it with the corner of my Road Atlas, but appart from that I do not have any major complaints. Since my purchase I replaced the alternator, batery (this August), fuel filter, EGR and PVC Valve (I had error code =32), and tires, spark plugs, the cables. It started burning oil a little, but it does not smoke. Good car.
Best $1,000 ever spent.
Bought this car last year for $1,000 (Canadian). Never a single problem, though she does burn some oil. I will drive this car until she dies and then I'll buy another one. I love this car!
Could be better, but fast and fun.
Probably a decent car if you don't plan on keeping it past 100,000 miles. Not bad for the money for a while. Not built to last. I bought it with 106,000 miles and has had gradually worsening oil consumption. Trunk leaks, electric sun roof quit working(a common problem I hear), a/c quit for no apparent reason(compressor still works). EGR valve replaced at dealer for a couple hundred bucks!
NOT RECOMMENDED: '95 Saturn SC1 coupe
We purchased this SC1 new in 1995 and things soon started to go wrong. Within a month, the dash top had to be replaced and the dealer's attempt at matching the paint color and texture was a failure. The seats had to be replaced twice, the first time because the driver's seat back collapsed in the recline position, and later because the seat frame and bolts were found to be stripped. Door frame rain guards had to be replaced twice, and reglued many more times. Rough- running engine was diagnosed with code 32 and ERG valve was replaced. Engine mounts went bad and had to be replaced. Clutch hydraulics leaked = new master cylinder. Engine burns oil between changes and won't pass emissions. We spent almost $3,500 in maintenance and fixes in the first 100,000 miles. We won't be buying a Saturn again.
Love my Saturn
I have owned this car for eleven years and have enjoyed all 11. No major engine repairs ever made. Annual car maintenance only. Only had to replace the muffler and tires once so far. Still runs as good as the day I bought it. Only "bad" thing about the car is hard to get in and out of after making several different stops in one trip. Getting older myself makes it harder to get out. Body still in good shape. Only rust is on driver side headlight. A few "dings" in body from a hail storm but not that bad. Have to say I would recommend a Saturn to anyone.
Saturns are Underrated
I just recently bought my SC1, let me tell you, this thing is a nice ride. It is comfortable, smooth drive and quiet. Sure there a couple things to pick apart, the interior rattles a little bit and the horsepower is nothing special. People used to higher-end cars may have a problem with these little things, but for me, they are nothing. Saturn's bodys do not rust, but any metal parts on the car, will rust like any other car that you know of the same year. This is all I would expect from a car with the price I payed for it. Saturns are underrated, thus making them low-cost, even though they are reliable. Just like any other car, if you take care of it, it will take of you.
Saturns are Underrated!
I've had my '95 saturn SC1 for about 5 months now and I love it! Sure there are small problems with the car. Plasticy interior, not very fast. But for the price you can now get a Saturn for, this car is unbeatable! Just like any other car, Saturns will also need work done to them. I have had to clean an EGR valve, clean the throttle body, and change the brakes. Saturn is known for their cars being easy and simple to work on. You won't need to take it to a auto shop. The exterior look and design of the car is awesome, one of the best looking 1995 cars ever, it still looks new, Gas mileage is awesome too! Saturns are a great starter car for a new driver or for someone who just wants a car
95 saturn SC 1 - The Greatest
I bought this car with 98k miles on it for $3k and its still going stronger than ever @ 139k miles. I change the oil every 1500 miles and always add a little special additves for cars with high milage. I have to say the amount of money i'm saving on both insurance & car payments I'll have my house in no time. This little car is reliable and Economical, on a full tank of gas i get mindblowing results, I fill my tank once every two weeks and I drive 20 miles a day just for work. This is the best part, I see my car all the time on the road, It's such a good feeling to see them still running and going strong....
95 SC2, A good Pick for Tunerz
In the Tuner world, Saturn SC2s a rare treat, When you think of the Sport Compacts you usally don't hink of Saturn's but when u do see one fixed up, it turns heads. I have fully tuned mine, with a body kit, rims, and a Vertical Door Conversion, and I love the looks i get, when people say, thas a saturn?!?!
Good Car Over All
It is pretty reliable, overheating once. You get great milage too. It as a sporty felling to it and good pick up. I would reccomend to anyone.
This is a great car!!!
I love this car. It needed some work when I got it but now its in almost perfect condition. This car out performs all stock hondas and acura integras. I like to race and this car does it all for me. Yes I know its a saturn but this car is the little engine that could. With a twin cam 16 valve engine. I feel like a pro.
Good Car Over All

Sad to Say Good Bye
My wife purchased this vehicle in 1995 saying she would keep it for ten years - I laughed - yeah right. 10 years later it is being sold after no major problems, just routine maintenance; never even had to replace the battery and we are in Canada. With four snow tires it would go anywhere and with the 5 speed manual it gave a good top end on the highway just took time to get there. Highly recommend this vehicle and great fuel economy to boot.
