SAABrina
I love my 1986 Saab, but it is definitely an old car now with 211,000 miles on it. even though she's old, she still manages to act like a teenage girl. Sweet most of the time, but she can be a !@#$!. on the third fuel pump, the locks always break, some of the things have just never worked ac cruise control, but i don't care. in fact it makes me love this car all the more. its quirky and fast just like a saab should be. GM took a great brand and killed it. Long live Swedish Saabs
Not too shabby
Bought mine with 130000, and now it has 150000, descent ride, good gas milage(22 city almost 32 highway), fun turbo, expensive but classy. Leather seats climate control turbo good for long trips. Expensive to fix and impossible to repair in your own garage. spent 3500 for the car and about 8000 for parts and labor. Still runs, cold starts hard, but turbo is easy to tune, mine has 235 torque and 205 horsepower with just turbo boost, k&n air and high octane (98 octane) fuel, beats any civic or integra piece of cake, even beat an 89 mustang down a strip. Fun car for kids, just need a good mechanic.
Saabilicious
The car rides extremely smoothly. However, if you have to take it to the shop beware! You will be in for a scare. I have found that the normal trip to the shop cost me an average of $500. From the transmission, to the engine, to the breaks, something contunually seems to be going every 6 months. On the upside, the ride is great. Very smooth, and comftortable. Great luxury ride. I would just reccomend take care of the car, or it will take care of your wallet!
Fun fun fun
This is my second pre owned Saab. I love this car. Yes, it can be pricey to fix at times, but the ride is great. The price listed here does not do this car justice. Mine has only 160k on it, and she runs like a demon. It is nice to drive to work or around town and not see fifty other cars like yours.
wow
had mine for 10 years, and love it. repairs can be pricey, but it is a great car!
Great first car for new driver
The car has 250k on it now and I still get over 30 mpg on the highway. The 5 speed trans is very easy for my 16 year old to learn stick. The leather interior is still in great shape with no visible wear. I bought it from my brother after he put 70k on it over 5 years with little or no trouble. Great car that needs a cup holder to be complete.
Yes ok...but I look after my SAAB's ..
I have owned 9000's as Carlsson 1991 2'3T, 1996 CSE, Aero 1996, Anniversary 12/1998. I bought that as soon as seeing the advertisement...flew to Melbourne and drove it back...about 1900 kMs. Found it was not a fat friend who had broken the passenger seat but from SAAB expert Steve Emmanuel (SAAB Wreck NSW) that they have adjustment 'stays underneath the squab...and sometimes they break..the seat twists. I bought the last two in the country...about $260 I recall. Back to square 1...I bought the Carlsson instantly and flew to Victoria (Melbourne) initially and drove to Queensland. Later I drove it down to Sydney and took it to Heasmans in Sydenham NSW for the same work I have done on every car...100% steering , Bilsteins and camber to suit me...to suit my driving. After 60 years patronage they know me well. I also had them change all the engine mounts replaced as one was crook... Some time later I had my clutch kit installed by people I'd never use again at Everton in Qld (SAAB "experts")..On the drive home 'way back when' I found they'd left a minor hose off the cooling system so... in peak hour traffic... temperature went too high.. Escaping the traffic was not easy...people don't give way....I managed to get into a side street, waited until traffic eased...an hour and an half...and find water. The repairers didn't even apologise....That might be unfair reflection but someone there was rip tear and bust and didn't QA the work done. That was a decade ago...so maybe entirely new staff since then... Owing to not using the car over the last perhaps 10 years my eagle-eyed son last weekend when I was trying to sort out the idling problem saw they had left one gearbox bolt and the starter loose... What I am probably getting at is that unless we use recommended people (Abbott for example) who are utterly thorough and check everything for us and with great experience and savvy our cars will always be at risk. Going back to the beginning...if a balljoint breaks or drops out as nut has spun-off the fault comes home to the owner/driver. Require fully descriptive invoices or even work statements. Don't settle for broad statements...We must, if we want our SAAB to last, be pro-active owners...and ask around until we find real and serious SAAB experts...or good mechanics that understand SAAB systems and how to make them 100%...If an engine falls out of a car....we are just letting other people take responsibility...and they probably will not....we are neglecting that we may be also causal through neglect or allowing poor quality after-market parts to be used ...and there are good quality items...not just chinese junk. . The Carlsson had one nuisance which not even SAAB could diagnose...I eventually did...When turning on lights at night, engine stopped dead!...There's a design flaw allowing a fault in the switch to kill the engine. As 9000's are becoming scarcer at wreckers...I bought about 8 or 9 'spare' headlight switches about 8 years ago....and a spare genuine clutch slave cylinder. As the car is essentially on blocks I also had all the braking system overhauled by real brake machining experts at Olympic Circuit Southport...The son who does the work was an airforce mechanic. Recently they have stopped doing the "R and R' work...The mechanic was damned good ...old chap maybe he retired or maybe some licensing issue came up. I replaced the fuel pump in the Carlsson as a matter of course owing to 'age' (the car's not mine)...I also had a 200cell cat exhaust fitted and when the car came back from the garage (2 months later!) head mechanic said' MAF is fine'...before he said 'crook' so I bought a reco'd one $400 trade....and sent it back as wrong one was sent up. That's when he said 'yours is ok'. It's not. Car will not idle until warm...cuts out over and over...so two days ago I unplugged the MAF...expecting things to get worse...and the car just idled nicely but at 1000rpm...I suppose I have spent $3000 on the Carlsson over 20 years...or maybe $3800 with very good tyres. Hardly any of that has been owing to faulty car. Some SAABs have been banged up and 'repaired'. Some have been flogged and not maintained. Even SAAB when flogged and used on salty English roads and when people park without moving car when turning steering...will eventually crack up.The anniversary ...I did the work cost me about $2500 including a crook alternator... If you do not look after suspension engine and gearbox mounts trouble is bound to creep up. Wheels don't fall off unless cheap chinese ball joints used and abused..chinese coil packs are unreliable...but as yet no one repairs the electronics inside the pack....have the steering and suspension rubbers and components really professionally checked every year. Having your SAAB scrutineered at least every 12 months might be money well spent. Voila

Saab story
Mine is a 1989 Turbo. As all Saab owners will tell you, we love the car--when it is running right. But you had better be a weekend mechanic yourself or have close ties to a reliable inexpensive mechanic you trust, or look out! My 2nd gear synchro has been cooked ever since I picked it up at105,000 miles. The speedo quit for 2yrs, then fixed itself this past year....go figure. I am about to havemy 3rd (that's right THIRD) clutch slavecylinder ($1200) in 5 yrs and 30,000miles. Headliner sagging now. I hear another cv joint clicking (and I alreadyreplaced this one). Engine mounts ofcourse need redoing now. It's not too late, save yourself! Buy a Toyota!
Good buy
Bought this car w/ 96k miles, now has 145. Have had no major problems with drivetrain. Airbag has had problems, the SRS system for this year is prone to throw fault codes. Engine mounts will need to be replaced every 30k miles. NEVER BUY A 9000 WITH AN AUTOMATIC. I don't know anyone w/ an auto that hasn't had it rebuilt (I have a manual)
Amazing First Car
This is my first car, and I really love it, my parents gave it to me, and it is an amazing car.
A car for all ages
This is my second car so far, and it is superb. My last car was a 1993 Subaru Legacy AWD which was mediocre compared to the saab. The saab has 208,000 miles and it runs like a charm, the handling is great and the performance and ride comfort are top knotch. I would recommend this car to any beginner driver.
Help mechanic's children through college
The car is engineered to be a high performance vehicle. However, once the vehicle reaches an older age it looses most of it's power and style. The repairs have been costly. The parts are normally special order, and many parts are intergrated.
Classy & comfortable
I bought this car used from a repair shop that specializes in European cars. At that time it had 105,300 miles on it and was 8 years old. I thought it was a terrific value, giving me lots of luxury for little money. Although the repairs are expensive when they occur, not very much went wrong in the 2 years I had it, and the parts that did fail were original issue. I felt very safe and secure in it, the ABS brakes especially were great--no fishtailing at all--and got me out of 3 close encounters unscathed.
Griffin
The best car ever
Best Car I have ever driven (Griffin)
Underrated horsepower. Only thing that can compete on the road 10 years after purchase are vehicles with Cadillac's North Star engine. Very safe, and performs beautifully in the winter....even drove it across the Rockies. Interior still rivals 2002 cars with its aesthetics and design. Too bad they didn't incorporate some cup holders back in 92'.
Fun to own
great cold weather car
Fun but expensive to fix
I bought as an investment to fix up and resell. Had only 3 weeks and the ASR moduel went out. $1000 dealer fix, 475 for a used one installed. After all is said and done I will probably keep it and sell something else instead!
What a shame - so close to perfect
Bad news first-- Our wheel fell off yesterday - no warning lower ball joint fell out at slow speed around town. This on top of a new motor last year from an (unheard and unheard of) timing chain break which cracked the block. Replaced seat heaters twice, and needed new spark plug manifold several years ago. Once in a while the security system self alarms.
going to miss this car
wow, 12 years with this ride. great car. smooth and stylish design that matches new models. it be nice to hid the interior though. stapled roof, ripped seats, and sunroof that leaks all over you after a night of rain.the engine and tranny rule on this car. a good SAAB mechanic, access to affordable parts will see this car go well past 200K.
Turbo charged
Over all a nicely equiped Saab 9000 with the leather seats, heated seats, climate control and ect.
Best used car I've owned
Overall I have found that the car is very responsive...a blast to drive..the turbo is a great feature when it comes to passing those slowing you up. The main things I love are the heated seats...the huge trunk...the idea of knowning I'm in one of the safest cars on the road..Although they are a bit pricey to have repairs done.
Wonderful piece of engineering
Very few problems with this vehicle even for it's age. Just normal wear and tear. Very good design overall. Happy with performance and power. It would be nicer if there was a traction control button. A few upgrades and this would be the perfect vehicle for me, all within the right price range. Holds it's own to luxury cars of today.
Great Car
If you ever get the change to take one for a test drive .. be very careful .. you just might find yourself owning one. That's what happened to me.
Saab 9000 saved our lives
We loved this car, and it saved our lives in a wreck, in Belgium. We wrecked ~ 110-120 km/h (on highway) with cement wall! and we hadn't a problem!!! The policemen, the firemen, and the ers said it's unbelievable, they never seen before it.
NEED TO KNOW VALUE
I LOVE THE WAY THE CAR DRIVES.IT SEEMS TO HAVE AN EXCELLENT MOTOR AND TRANSMISSION BUT IT SEEMS THAT I CAN'T DEPEND ON THE ELECTRICAL PARTS.IT NEEDS REPAIRS ON THE HOOD,ONE SMALL PLACE ON THE BODY,A REAR TAIL LIGHT LENS,REPAIRS ON THE AC,TAPE DECK AND CD PLAYER NOT WORKING,AND I BELIEVE IT NEEDS AN ALTERNATOR.RIGHT NOW IT IS NOT RUNNING.NEW BATTERY BUT NOT HOLDING A CHARGE.
junk
don't buy one of these. for 1, Saab is out of business so to get the parts will be more expensive then what they already are. my Saab had everything wrong that you you could think of, get 1 thing fixed and something else would go wrong. at the end of its life the transmission locked up on my wife while on the hwy which caused the front tires to lock up at 65 MPH and she hit her head off the windshield and it pretty much dropped the tranny and the bottom half of the motor right on the hwy! cost us $125 for the tow and I sold the car the next day to the scrap yard for $110 so I still lost out! the sunroof leaked when it rained, every 2 months had to have a new flex pipe installed
Saab > domestics
Had the car for 2 years. Done a lot of maintenence and found it fairly easy. Very good car.
