Got R1T a year ago. Its great to drive - fast, smooth, handles precisely. A few quirks have been handled by software updates. I love rolling past the gas stations and not even looking at the prices. I just pull into my garage and plug it in. (Operating cost is about 1/3 the cost of gas.)

So much better than a Cybertruck

I am a long time Tesla owner. I've bought 5 so far and still own 3 (S Plaid, new Model 3 Performance (Highland) and Model 3 Long Range). I had a deposit on a Cybertruck (CT) since day 1, just like I did for the original Model 3. A lot can change from when you originally put a deposit down on a CT; namely Rivian. I drove a Rivian when they became widely available. I was pretty impressed but held out hope for the CT. I thought I'd wait until I had a chance to finally drive a CT and make my decision then. Well, long story short, I should have purchased the Rivian when they first came out rather than wait for the CT. The Rivian is an absolute joy to drive and none of the polarizing issues of the CT. There is no special upkeep required. The fit and finish is outstanding on the Rivian. It is more comfortable, quieter, very quick, and does everything very well. I've never driving a pickup that handles as well as this. Put some sticky street tires on it and you could embarrass a lot of sports cars in the twisties. Even better on mine since it is the QM (quad motor) version with torque vectoring. Which is similarto putting my Plaid in track mode where it enables it. It has a lot of nice touches and well thought out things. The only place Rivian lags behind Tesla is autonomous driving. FSD is a mixed bag on my Teslas, and I still don't think it is ready for prime time, but it is clearly superior to anything Rivian has. As for basic autopilot on Tesla, I think the Rivian is pretty close there. In some ways better, some ways worse. One thing I love about Rivian, is the adjustable brake regen. The standard mode is pretty comparable to Tesla's one and only choice (used to be more). The high regen on the Rivian is really stout. I've owned a lot of pickups and my last, and most favorite (until now) was a Ram 1500 turbodiesel. A very nice riding truck and a great interior. It was reliable, efficient, comfy and a great daily driver. As good as it was, the Rivian is better in almost every way other than bed length. The stock 4.5' bed on my Rivian is more than adequate. It is one of the best EVs I've ever owned and one of the best vehicles ICE or otherwise I've owned. I thought I'd also try SUVs even though I had a CT on order. So I drove the current crop of those and of course the Rivian R1S. I have to say the R1T rides much better and is a better overall vehicle if you don't need to seat 7 or a 3rd row seat. The R1T feels much better balanced when you drive it. Rivian hit a homerun with this truck. I really regret not buying one sooner.

Better Than Advertised

I waited 2 years for my Max Pack Adventure R1T. The performance Dual-Motor is plenty quick in Sport Mode and in All-Purpose Mode, it’s smooth, comfortable and quiet. Much more comfortable than my prior 3 Teslas. 390 miles is the max range with my 22” wheels. I haven’t put it through its paces yet (towing, hauling, or off road), but I’m loving it as a daily driver.

Is It Fraud?

Our order was placed on May 4, 2024, in Pasadena, CA. Car was scheduled to be ready as spec'd within 2 weeks in Eastvale, CA. About two hours from our home in Los Angeles. Upon arrival and inspection of the vehicle: gear cable was missing, door flashlight was stuck and would not come out, truck bed was dirty and, most importantly, the truck did NOT have the tonneau cover, as ordered. We would not have purchased this vehicle had we been advised that the cover was unavailable. Vague and open-ended assurances as to when the tonneau would be available were made. If Rivian was not located almost 2 hours away, we would have canceled the purchase and walked off the lot. Don't believe what they tell you. After numerous communications and follow-ups, and a final message from me advising that unless the tonneau was installed by a particular date I will commence with legal action, a date was scheduled for pick-up of the truck for repair. It took almost two-months. I'll repeat: two months!!! Rivian had been paid about $100K for something which they could not deliver. And they knew it. Is it fraud? Is it unethical? Is it bad faith? Is it bait and switch? Probably all. Almost from the very beginning I provided Rivian with 3 options: Undo the sale, take the vehicle and give me my money back, or, give me a loaner truck which has the features of the one I ordered until mine was fixed, or, I can take steps to force them to repurchase the vehicle und the California Lemon Law, The Song Beverly Act, which generally allows manufacturers up to 30 days to fix a covered issue. Rivian chose none of these. Since then the truck has "bricked" once. For the uninitiated, "bricking" is when the car outright dies, nothing at all works. The car bricked and locked itself with my wallet and personal effects inside. It took Rivian 2 weeks to fix. While a loaner rental car was offered, it was of no use to me. I declined. Later, the front trunk would not close and a tech was sent to fix it. He got it to close, but replacement brackets were needed and he advised that he'll order and install them once they are painted. A month went by and nothing was heard from Rivian. I followed up and was told that it would be another month before they can schedule my installation. Let's be clear: two months for repair of the front trunk and that was only because I followed up. Otherwise it likely would never have been taken care of. Whatever your motivation for considering a Rivian vehicle, do so with eyes wide open and expectations of reliability, service and support set low.

I have had a Tesla and currently a BMW I4 EDrive40. The BMW is more of a luxury sedan which I love. The Rivian is still new to me, but drives well, little noise and has some great features.
