Tons of fun

I owned a 1992 and a 1993. Common problems include transmission synchronizers after about 50k miles and turbos after 100k miles. And you don't want to forget to change the timing belt at about 60k miles. Overall this car is outstanding to drive. Crazy acceleration off the line but less when you hit 2nd gear. Still a super nice sports car with 50/50 power split between front and rear wheels which makes for wonderful handling especially if you use the throttle to lift the front end a little and power through curves with the front wheels pulling you in the direction you want to go. The car is capable of amazing speed in rally type conditions. Snow, gravel, or ice won't slow you down.

Gutsy & Reliable

Have driven this car for over 60,000 miles. It's fast, responsive and gets very good gas mileage. One repair only - the cruise control went out. Extremely reliable. I have 98,000 miles on it now with the original brake pads. Keep bringing it in and my repair guy keeps telling me they look like new.

Great Car with 1 Major flaw

I bought the car (Electric Blue Metallic) with dealer installed ground- effects, alloy rims and dark tinting. It looked sleek and sexy. It was a very good performer. I got it up to about 130 in the Utah desert while on a 7 month tour I took right after I bought it. I only rated it 8 for performance because of the 135 hp engine, still it was agile and glued to the road. But it had one fatal problem...the TIMING Belt broke 3 times. The first time I was idling so I just replaced it and drove away, the second time I put in a new engine, and the 3rd time I gave it to my gear-head brother. Except for the timing belt a great car.

if you want a car that is most definitly fun to drive, quick, and and handles great buy one of these. If you NEED a vehicle with lots of space for traveling or what not then this probably isn't the best choise! These cars probably fall in the performance two seater category.

I love my Laser. I bought it primarily for the Mitsubishi 4g63 motor under the hood, then fell in love with it. It picks right up and goes when I want it to, handles great, runs beautiful, and has so much potential as a "fix-it- up" tuner car. Practically turbo-ready (as all 4g63 motors are), sleek looks and comfortable to ride in (the front seat). I thought I was buying a cheap replacement for my now-dead 1990 Eclipse, and found a car 10 times better.

I have driven my 1991 Laser RS, auto, non-turbo ( it looks exactly like the file photo ) for 8 years now. I go to different consumer ratings to look at how it stacks up and can not believe the 6-7 point ratings. It is the most agile city car I have driven in my28 years of diving. It is truly a 1 person car and I use it as such.

Loved mine, but giving up

Rust. It eventually gets most old cars. I had engine problems also, and had oil leaks, that I had repaired. But now there is little to no oil pressure, and the solution is more expensive than the car. Other troubles I had were the ECU, brakes that "came loose" and needed repair more than once, and rust in the struts/under-carriage. Still, I loved the car. Drove nicely and gave me the sports car feeling, in a front wheel vehicle that went great in snow. Lots of room with the rear seats down, for cargo. Two seater for people, for sure, anyway. Mine was basic, with the 1.8L engine, no supercharger, and it was NOT quick, more like an economy car, but still VERY fun to drive. I loved my laser, but it's time to part with it.

I had a 91 metallic blue Plymouth Laser and it was a dream to drive. Had 6 speakers so you could really jam out. Was really peppy and took corners well with the wide tires. Had a tendency to speed because it handled so well. When my timing chain/belt went at 20,000 miles things went south.

This car has been serving me well for five years now. It still has loads of power and is still fun to drive. The only problems I have is the prices of the parts and replacing them (transmission being the biggest and most expensive of my problems), but it is still worth it for this fun car.

Remember, the eclipse and talon were the same cars for these years. You can find the Lazer at lower prices. This engine has produced over 500hp. This might be the best domestic tuner compact out there.

I have had my Laser RS non turbo for 14 years. It has 85,000 KM or approx 50,000 miles on it and has been the best car I have owned, except for the paint job which started to crack at around 4 1/2 years and no one knew what the problem was -- was just like fibre glass cracking. Found out it was the undercoat that had not been applied properly and seeped up through topcoat. I ended up having to have painted. I have only had one set of new brakes and 1 set of new tires in the entire 14 years. She is painted black and when washed and cared for shines like you wouldn't believe and the interior is pristine. That year in the RS model had beautiful seat covers.

fun car, but has some quirks that are inherent to all the DSM cars. After 100k miles expect some problems, with engine and trans. The AWD sticks like glue to curves, the turbo gives a kick to this little 4 banger like the muscle cars of the 60's.

Had to have the head redone twice because of bent valves, because of the timing being out. What a nightmare. The second time it was because of the harmonic balancer splitting in half because it is 2 pieces with a rubber center, of course this threw it off time and now it's in the garage with no compression on no 4 cylinder. Body in perfect cond. but i think that this one is cursed on the motor. WOW! Time for the junk yard.......

Ive owned my car for about an year and a half and havnt had a single problem with it. Ive also added a few small modifications to it that have put it up to par with your adverage muscle car (ie mustang). If your looking for a car thats reliable and gets good gas miliage, but can move when you put the pedal to the metal...this is the one.

I bought my Laser used. Eight years and 120,000 miles later, it still runs great. The only problems I've encounterd is a faulty oil valve seal and fading paint. I've thought about buying another car, but I can't myself parting with it anytime soon. The key to keeping any car running well is keeping up on the scheduled maintenance. However, I admit I didn't think an american car would hold up this well.

Amazing Car

I purchased my 1993 Plymouth Laser this past summer. I knew that all of the mechanical parts were made by Mistubishi from the start which was of course a big plus. I bought it for $1,500 with just over 100,000 miles on it. I knew I was getting a good deal, but now I know just how great it really was. It can be as quiet as a kitten. But when someone gets on your bad side, all it takes is a little tap on the gas after gearing down and it is no trouble to pass most vehicles. From a standstill, its always nice to be able to hit 60 in second gear, and do so without waiting very long. I haven't driven it in the winter yet, but the AWD as kept me from spinning (when I don't want to that is) so far.

I got this car my sophomore year in college. I was so excited to find such a "cool car" in my price range, which was nothing! (I got the car for less than $4,800 and paid cash for it.) It's really been a great car. I love how well it is on gas, especially in the city. I've put a lot of miles on it in a short period of time. I don't have cruise control, though, and that's a big down side. The paint on the roof is fading, but other than that, the rest of it, cosmetically, looks super. I am actually in the market for a new car now, and I must say, It will be sad when I get rid of my reliable little, blue Laser!

bought my "laser" a few months ago for a "dirt cheap" price. why?.. cause i couldn't get my saturn past inspection.. emmissions... beyond happy with the quality of this "dollar" car thus far... ($550)... took it on a 1,000 mile road-trip a few weeks ago... mostly to see if it was up to the task. it was and is. over that trip i averaged 37 mpg... 1.8 liter engine.. 4 spd auto overdrive trans... car ran flawlessly.. solid.. no rattles handles very well.

I bought this car with a broken turn lens for 500. I have spent about 1200 on replacing all wear items. Well worth it! Its a fun, sexy car, gets good gas mileage, is dependable and has lots of tuner potential, unfortunatly, it has 173,000, not worth the money to upgrade. I don't know why the book value is so low, its a great solid little car. I wish I got it new for 14,000, it would be on the cover of a tuner mag! Good reliable transportation!

Um.. I didn't want to give a review, just wanted to rate these cars. Anyway, these cars are very fun to drive. I have an Eagle Talon TSi just like my Laser RS that I have, and I love them both. You can tune these cars to run against anything. My talon is still a project car but my Laser I've put a system in and I've opened up the air box and put rims on it. Nothing special but you get a lot more outta of these cars with a tune up and opened air box with K&N air filter.
