i have not had an problems and im second owner of the vehicle with the 3.1L engine
I love my Olds but...
I bought my Olds in 2002, it has been a pretty dependable car except its air conditioning system seems strange, as well as the problems I have with the drivers side door handle. I have replaced it and it seems to have them same problem only after a year. The air conditioner also seems to go off when going up hills. Also my cd player steals my cd's. I put one in and I might get it back that day or maybe a week later. Who knows?
Good Car
I've owned this car for almost 4 1/2 years now. It has had a few problems, but nothing major. The coolant sensor was replaced shortly after purchase at around 17,000 miles, and it looks to be bad again. The ABS sensor was replaced also a couple years ago. And it has twice backfired so the dealer told me. It ran rough the first time and they replaced the plugs and wires, and cleaned the fuel injectors. Then it did it again after we got the car back from the dealer 8 months later after brake work. They claimed it's the bad gas they make nowadays, and after resetting the computer it has been fine the last year. Very comfortable to drive.
My College Car Keeps on Going
I got this car in 2009 with 66,000 miles on it, and now is above 167,000 miles. Unfortunately, my transmission blew at 110,000 miles, but I opted to replace that and take my luck with the car, and I'm happy I did. Other than a fuel pump replacement at 130,000 miles, I've had fairly good luck with the car. If you can get one of these cheap, I'd consider it, because the GM parts on this car are so plentiful that the repairs are cheap. At 155,000 miles I took the car to my mechanic for a routine brake replacement, and he mentioned that the engine itself still looked fine. The other parts of the car are now going a bit. Some front panel rust, and some interior parts are starting to feel a bit loose, my cruise control went at about 140,000 miles and the repair would have ran $1,100 because it involved removing the steering mount, so I am just living without cruise. I've read about the head gasket issue--but so far I've been fine. Between my Cutlass and my wife's 2013 Chevy Cruze, I actually enjoy driving the Cutlass more, because the V6 can actually do some work. If you come across one of these for $1,000ish, and you just need cheap transportation, it's a fine option.

Junk
My 1996 Cutlass Supreme SL is the reason Oldsmobile went under. The stereo quit after 6 months - was replaced under warranty with what turned out to be a "refurbished" unit - tape deck quit right after the warranty ran out. Head gasket blew at 49,000 miles. Intake gasket went at 56,000 miles - found out the intake was cracked when I was replacing the gasket. Tranny died at 100,000 miles. I'm honestly afraid to drive this car more than walking distance from my house - and don't. I drove a 1975 Cutlass I inherited from Virginia last summer - I'm restoring it to replace my 1996...I felt safer driving the 1975 than I do my '96.
Love my Cutdee
I have had my car for two months and I love to drive it it is a very good car to drive it has almost every thing I want except a sunroof.
One of the best!
I bought the car with 125,000 miles on it , now I have 170,000. The car has started & run every day we've had it. It was a first car for two teenage daughters and now it is my daily driven work car. I've had many cars over the years this is probably the best and most reliable. The previous owner keeps bugging me to sell it back to him.
Most enjoyable car I have ever owned.
I purchased this vehicle with 42,000 miles and after almost 4 years, this has been the best car I have ever owned. I have owned 22 cars in the past 35 years and yes, this is the longest I have kept one. I love the ride, the handling is like a sport car, also great on those long trips. The cup holder is situated at the absolute right place. I have driven this to 105,000 with no repairs other than tires, brakes, and headlights. The car burns no oil, is as tight as the day I bought it. I just gave it to my 20 year old son who thinks this car is cool. I would buy another in a minute and I wish GM still made them.
Fantastic Automobile
I have owned this car for several years, having acquired it from my mother who bought it new. Great stereo, decent performance, excellent handling. Leather interior is extremely comfortable. Have driven it on many long range trips, have had no problems with the car mechanically. Had to replace the rear glass 1.5 years ago, heat shattered it. Would not hesitate to recommend the car, especially if it has a solid documentation history.
Nothing better
I purchased my second Cutlass Supreme last spring and wouldn't choose anything else. I have had squeaky brakes that the mechanic blames on GM for having a bad break year, and I had a leak in my back window that cost a few bucks, but all in all the engine is solid, handles great, and I already have my dad asking to buy it when I'm ready for something else. Dream on dad.. it is mine!!
Mine
I love this car. I've had two and wouldn't trade it for anything. Only problems I've had are with the brakes, they seem kinda hard to me. Oh well, I'll make do with
My Cutlass
This Car still gets glances for its modern styling. Many people do not know what kind of car it is and think it is a foreign sporty car. Often people can't get in because the door knobs are not in the normal place. Also, due to its styling it appears smaller than it really is.
Great car
This car isexcellent. I bought it with 41000 miles and now have 125ooo miles and no reapairs to the day except for tires and brakes. I live in an area with lots of snow and the car has no rust. It still gets 30mpg and burns NO oil. It runs great, as good as the day I bought it. It still has the original front struts, exhaust and headlights/taillights! Great car, hope it continues to go
LOVE IT
im only 17, and i got an '89 cutlass supreme as my first car, and i really like it alot. This car now is a piece...only because i ran it so hard, and in the last year i've had to repair it several times...i've mostly had problems with the brakes...and im kind of glad to hear that im not the only one...but! guess who is buying another cutlass supreme sometime this week! ME! Its a 1996 green 4 door. i am sooo excited!!
96 supreme
when i first got my car i had a lot of things go wrong with it, but now everything is working perfectly. i love the way it handels, but i think that 2nd gear is set at to low of a ratio. mine is a 96 with a 3.1. but i have managed to get it up to around 200hp. i also love the 5 spoke wheels that came with it. im going to get some 17's or 18's in the near future. screw a system this car already sounds awsome with out it.
Oldsmobile Cutlass
I really love my car. I hated to hear that they were not going to make these anymore. I am holding on to mine as long as I can.
Great car except for fuel injectors
I really like to drive my Cutlass Supreme series IV, it drives great, and clings to road and takes turns well. Handles well in Cleveland snow. The leather seats and sun roof make the car "fun" for a conservative family car. My only warning is: the fuel injectors seem to be a problem in this model. I had to have all of them replaced at 98,000 miles and it is exensive repair, then the ERG valve went. Edmunds.com in their reliabillity section lists this as a problem with Cutlass model. 96 Cutlass
I am an olds fan, and I love this car. It has just the righ amount of power to take people on, and styling to go anywhere. All my friends are jealous. I have owned a coupe with the 3.4 and my current sedan with the 3.1 and loved both!
Death of and olds
I bought my 2-door cutlass supreme with 72k miles on it. until recently I was quite impressed. The car really pulls double duty as a sports car and as a smooth riding family type car. But it has fallen apart under me. There is a problem with the brake lock, and I have a hard time shifting it out of park, and the real problem is that GM had a bad year with gaskets. Unfortunatly for me I ended up draining radiator fluid into the engine and it is now dead. A dead car at 92k miles is not what i expected. I don't think most people will get hit with an engine swap, but I really just wanted people to know about the problem.
Worst car I ever owned...
...despite meticulous upkeep. Acceleration, braking, and turning similar to sinking garbage barge. Same barge must have been the source for parts, too - worst build quality I've ever seen. Reliability, maintainability were a joke: After two alternators, a dozen brake rotors, an oil leak, a vacuum leak, a hundred other problems, and finally the fuel pump (on a four year old car!), the maintenance costs were killing me.
Smooth Ride
I absolutely love my cutlass it handles like my uncles nice new sporty RSX but its alot more comfy. It gets great milage and aslo has alot of getup'n go off the line. Shes a great daily driver and i love every minute in the car.
96olds
Bought this car a little over a year ago with 72k. So far, so good. Put 12k on it and was recently tuned, no mechanical problems to report. The exterior is well designed, looks newer than a '96. The interior needs improvement. Plenty of plastic, but that's no surprise. The dash is a simple layout, fine with me. Good radio. Seats can become uncomfy after a long trip. Power is sufficient with the 3.1L. Handles well with the 16 inch wheels. Early morning starts causes the engine to be very throaty, but I hear this is common with GM's 3.1's. Overall, I would recommend this car.
will not sell it
After 8 years and 90K miles, my Cutlass series III does not warrant me to buy another new car yet. It runs super and the Black finish still has its show room shine. I had to replace the radiator at 66 months because I failed to read the fine print of replacing your coolant at 100K (or 60 months which ever comes first - fluid sludged on me after 66 months). I just replaced the ignition switch and realized that the cost of these 2 "minor" repairs over 8 years was Value.
192,000 Miles & Still Going
Love this car! The 3.4 DOHC engine is the only way to go except for the $$$ to change the timing belt. Had a '95 3.1 version and this is MUCH quicker. Have had some repairs on it (AC compressor, cruise control module) but nothing you wouldn't expect for the mileage. The 5 spoke Olds wheels really set it off from the std Cutlass. Make sure of maintenance on timing belt if buying the 3.4 version. Nice leg & head room for driver & passenger (even w/moonroof and 6'1") - little cramped in rear but I don't ride there! Tranny is original but I do keep it serviced regularly. Engine uses 1 Qt oil/1,000 miles but not bad for mileage.
Still Fine After Ten Years
This car has been unbelievable since I've owned it, six years. Get this, the EGR valve went out about a year ago. Since then, the gas mileage has gone up three MPG in town (from 19 to 22) and on the road (27 MPG to 32)! Who needs an EGR valve? Nobody. The car is still classy looking (so far) with the 16" wheels and fine factory paint job, which is still shinny. The wheels are neat. The fine sound system still sounds good. Upkeep has included a new alternator and a new sensor, not bad at all. Of course, I have only put 60,000 miles on it in ten years, but they have been and still are good ones.
MY BEST RIDE EVER!!!
I have owned MANY used cars, and by far this one is my favorite. Driven almost daily, used also for long road trips. I am amazed with the comfort, handling, response, and over all feel of this auto. Like I said, I have owned many cars, including Cutlasses, but this one is different. When I bought it used ( 48,000 mi), the first test spin I took, I told my wife, " this car feels good, real good, its right", and I bought it. I haven't had a single problem with it at 82,000 miles. I get @32 mpg on a road trip averaging 70mph. AWESOME! I recommend this car over my wife's Accord anyday. Way to go GM. I wish you weren't going to discontinue the Old's line.
My Best Companion
I have owned my Cutlass for over ten years. Mileage to date is just over 207,000. I have had to do the regular maintenance repairs--intake manifold gasket (which I discovered has been replaced by a higher quality gasket); various sensors; injectors cleaned. Head gasket began leaking around 140,000 miles; catalytic converter replaced at 180,000 just to be preventive; tranny was replaced right at 200,000 miles. All in all, this car has been very reliable--even predictable in its repairs. More than one mechanic has asked me to buy it. My response? "NO WAY!" She still looks and sounds like new!
I LOVE BETTY WHITE!
I bought my 1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme SL in 2024. I bought it as a flip car, but I fell in love with the old lady! I have had newer cars 2012, 2013, 2006, but Betty White drives better and has more options than they did. She had 92,000 miles on her and has no rust when I bought her last fall. She's getting close to 100,000 now. I am not even a GM fan or a fan of older cars, but I LOVE THIS CAR! I had to replace the motor mounts and some some front suspension parts, but that is all. She is so comfortable it's like sitting in your grandmother's lap. The motor is peppy and sounds great too. If you can find one of these old gems still around in great shape like I did snatch it up!

Money Pit
Nothing but trouble. This car is a money pit. As soon as I get something fixed, something else breaks. Of course, this only started happening after the warranty ran out. A new transmission in a car only 5 years old and only driven to work and kids to school--shouldn't have happened. Tape player broke a long time ago. Door handle cover keeps falling off on passenger and driver side. Bad fuel pump, bad water pump, 2 alternators, several batteries and now the fuel injector system needs to be replaced. I'm finished dumping money into this car!
