Still an excellent, versatile backcountry SUV!
Purchased used in 2009, 48K miles, now 178000 miles. replaced clutch (premature failure, undersized original clutch, design defect, Nissan would not acknowledge or repair) at about 55K with non-Nissan appropriately-robust clutch parts from Jim Wolf Technology, San Diego, no further clutch issues to date. Interior fabric holding up very well but did have drivers seat upholstery redone recently. Timing chains, guides, water pump etc replaced at 177500-$2600. Didnt want to risk a timing chain break which probably would wreck the engine. Spark plugs replaced at this time too-$850. April 2025: still going strong, almost 186k miles. Planning to keep vehicle until it no longer makes economic sense. For my needs (emphasized), continues to be an excellent off-road and backcountry vehicle. Very functional multi-use, versatile SUV. Still gets 23 mpg highway with 6 speed manual-quite good for a truck based SUV. Short wheel Base and tight turning radius makes for a nimble vehicle. Easily removed back seat bottom cushions allows conversion to an almost 7’ long flat sleeping platform. October 2018 update: X now has 131K+ miles. No other significant mechanical issues since the premature clutch failure other than mostly routine stuff. Replacement clutch with non-Nissan Jim Wolf Technology components has been trouble-free so far. I'm still vy impressed with the overall versatility and attention to detail of this vehicle given my specific needs, and plan to drive it until the "doors fall off". And it still consistently gets an average of about 23 mpg (ranges from 22 to 24+) with the standard tranny, which again is excellent for this type of truck-based 4wd rock crawler type vehicle. Bummer that Nissan stopped making Xterras in 2016, but not enough demand apparently. Maybe the next version will be a hybrid?? Oct 2021 review: Still going strong at about 160k miles. Jim Wolf Technology replacement clutch (at 55k miles) still working just fine. Clutch starter safety switch failed. Easy fix by mechanic but vehicle disabled and had to be towed. No other significant problems so far. Still vy pleased at the general quality and versatility of this vehicle. Still plan to use until no longer practical from a repair standpoint.

radiator/transmission
I, too, have experienced the faulty radiator leaking into the transmission and ruining it...I have 109000 miles so it is beyond the 80000 mile warranty and nissan wants thousands to fix it....acknowledging that the faulty radiator caused the problem, not wear, tear, etc.....so now they want me to pay the hefty bill for a new radiator and transmission for a defect in the automobile....Shame on Nissan for not recalling and fixing this problem

trans has design flaw
I have a 2005 Xterra and this a known problem that the radiator leaks into the trans causing both to fail. Nissan was sued over this problem and lost, so they extended the warranty to cover fixing. This problem also exists on the Frontier and Pathfinder. Nissan doesn't tell you this and I found out the hard way.
Love it, Hate it.. It's a good vehicle!
Purchased mine very much used @ 143K miles recently.. This is a very well built vehicle, with a strong engine. Ok, so the interior isn't fantastic, but it's functional, and mind you I've been happy with my European vehicles (BMW), exclusively, for many years now. Steering is a bit heavy, but I can forgive that. The "S" model doesn't have a rear locker, but who needs that anyhow. Driver's fabric seat has a rip in it, but I don't care, because I'm happy driving it. I wanted a vehicle I can take off road that's reliable, and this is it. But be well aware that there is a fatal flaw a few mention here in the reviews. If your planning on buying one, you'll want to research "SMOD", or "Strawberry milkshake of death". Essentially the trans fluid passes through a small radiator/heat exchanger in the bottom of the vehicles radiator that has a weak point -- the unions, and as such will fail causing the coolant to mix with the trans fluid. Nissan issued a TSB at some point in the past, creative owners bypassed this weakness during that time as a simple DIY, some supplemented this DIY with an auxiliary transmission cooler. I added one as a preventative, not that the vehicle was suffering with any problems. Doing your homework on this will save you gobs of money. Luckily the owner of my vehicle (or Nissan) performed this bypass before a SMOD event occurred. I've performed a full fluid change on this vehicle (including all diff's, transfer cases, engine, and transmission oil) just to cover myself. Other, somewhat minor, area of concern is the acessory belt tensioner as it's essentially weak, thus causing a squealing as the belt slips on the pulleys. Gates makes a kit and supplies you with the tensioner and belt for a reasonable 38 bucks through Amazon. Other minor area of concern is that the hood tends to pull and make noise as wind comes underneath it in heavy frontal winds. Take a 12mm socket and simply loosen the three hood latch bolts, and push the hood latch down, and retighten.. Done, and one. Great vehicle, just do your research. There's reports of people achieving over 360K on the stock vehicle with basic maintenance.. No reason you can achieve the same with a little TLC.

Shame on Nissan!!
Purchased at 64000 miles, drove it, loved it, no problems at all other than the tire pressure light after so many miles of consistent driving. Then, at 121,000 miles, boom... transmission failure. Upon further research, it is a NISSAN DEFECT in the radiator that Nissan refuses to address more than a little warranty increase, and even THAT took a lawsuit. I spent $3000+ over a period of 8 months to fix it and it still wasn't fixed. I had to purchase another vehicle to drive while it was down. I ran out of money, so I was forced to trade the XTerra with $3500 of negative equity, totaling near $7000 that I lost on this vehicle, due to Nissan and its ways. NEVER. AGAIN.
shame of American Nissan
I bought a 2005 X-Terra because I very much like the VQ engine series and their automatic transmissions. The first thing was the cheap interior seats began to shred. At 60K the paint is flaking off the roof and the factory knows it had white paint problems (no roof clear coat) at the factory and sold the vehicles anyway. No help from the dealer or factory. I bypassed the radiator w/a tow external cooler. The gas guage sender is failed, the fuel vapor recovery sytem is failed and now the loop cam chains need replacing along w/ the tensioner. I love driving this truck but it is a mess considering it's age. I believe the responsibility rests with American Nissan management and cheaper is better
Only 85,000 Miles !!!
Bought a new Nissan Xterra in 2005. I only have 85,000 miles on my Nissan Xterra. I was in love with this SUV until I started having problems. The transmission was leaking into my radiator so I had to replace the radiator "myself" because Nissan was sending my recall notices to some other address so I did not know about the recall's and I couldn't afford to pay for the expensive cost. They didn't even care even though it was their fault. Then the oil filter seal started leaking and I also fixed that problem "myself". Then the fuel sensor ( recall I missed ) went out. I am planning to fix this myself also. I just had the timing chain guides replaced because they broke ( $1,158 ). Here is the real kicker about that problem. I took my SUV to Fenton Nissan dealer on NW Expressway in OKC last week because there was an aggressive clicking noise under my hood coming from the motor. They told me it was a rod knocking and it was going to cost me $5,534 for a used engine or $8,135 for a new engine ! This now used vehicle is only worth around $10,000 ? Really stressed me out ! This was a big decision I was going to have to make ! Fix this problem or just buy a new vehicle ?? I have worked on cars all my life and I kept telling myself....... I have never heard a rod knocking sound like this one ? Trusting my instincts I decided to take it to a trusted mechanic ( Weaver Brothers Automotive ) here in OKC. He also said that it doesn't sound like a rod ? So I let them tear it down to find out it was only the timing chain guide, so he replaced both of them while it was apart. This cost me $1,158 for repairs instead of the $8,000 they were going to charge at the dealer ! They lied to me ! I found out that the service tech's are paid on commission ! I will never buy another Nissan product or trust a Nissan dealership from now on ! Don't take your vehicle to a dealership. Take it to someone you can trust. It will save you a lot of $$$ for uncostly repairs.

Nice redesign
If you're in the market for this size SUV, and have only driven the past version, give this one a shot. The upgraded engine and torque really make this car standout. It's still a truck, make no mistake, but it doesn't feel much like a truck on the road. Outstanding turn radius as well.
Loved it... Until the dreaded radiator leak/transmission failure
I bought it used @ a dealer & immediately was planning my next purchase of a NEW X-Terra (in several years). Spent $2k in repairs, then @ 95k miles the tranny failed due to the now well-known radiator leak into the transmission. Nissan won't help & Nissan dealers (who all know of this NISSAN design flaw/defect) cut the trade value in 1/2, which leaves the once loyal consumer stuck with a car they can't afford to fix, but are too upside down to trade in affordably. Boo on Nissan for its lack of remediation on a defect which statistically fails well after their 80k mile warranty. Lost a loyal customer. These should not be allowed for resale w/out a documented fix preventing fail. BEWARE LEMON!
Nissan attitude
My primary issue is not so much with my xterra (even though at around 150k miles I have experienced a number of mechanical issues), rather with Nissan's apparent unwillingness to stand behind their vehicles. I purchased my 2005 xterra from the same dealer I service it at. I have, from the outset, had repeated problems with the fuel sensor gauge,. Because the issue, until now, has never caused a signal in their system check, they have refused to replace the required part. Their attitude when I complained -essentially -too bad -we have no responsibility to fix what our system check does not designate. At around 105,000 miles, I heard of an issue, through a lawyer, to do with the radiator. Despite the dealer knowing about this issue for some time, I was not advised to have the radiator replaced -until I fell out of warranty. Same response as with the fuel sensor. Updating to around 170k miles I had a vnumber of 'plastic part' related issues -thongs like the timing chain guide and fuel elvel sensor -cost about 3k to fix but as the car continued to drive so well otherwise, I spent the money. At around 207k miles, more problems -alternator, cam positioning sensor, electric coils, another sensor. Structurally the car is now very sound. Except that I no longer am confident enough to take it on long drives (multi day trips including offroading). So, while it is running extremely well, I am selling it- only to buy another xterra. TRue there have been some problems over the 15 yrs I have owned the car but I always felt secure and safe. Not so sure about Nissan the company but the cr is 'as advertised'. Hope this helps someone in there decision making In summary, while I am somewhat disappoint ted in the frequency of repairs I am now experiencing, the car itself has been what I expected -a useful, solid vehicle for both highway and off road travel. However, I will not buy another Nissan because of the company's indifferent attitude to its customers. For the past year or so I have had little problem with the car. I continue to enjoy it and am not sure what else I would migrate to if i sold it- except a more fuel efficient vehicle. However, i do hear that my local dealer ship is going to a commission service model which will only add to my existnig concerns about the company's attitude to its customers

Beware of this SUV!
The Xterra is actually a good car, functional, comfortable and drives very well. It has also been very reliable for normal maintenance, I've put less into it than most cars I've owned for routine maintenance. BUT, and it's a very big but, actually two big buts, it has two issues that are monumental. Namely the fluid leakage problem that causes transmission failure, just read through the other reviews, AND sludge buildup in the engine, the first of which required a new transmission and the 2nd of which required a new engine. I got hit with both of those coincidentally AFTER the warranty ran out. When it was all said and done I ended up dumping another 12 grand into the car for two design flaws that should never have happened in the first place, if Nissan engineers had been more competent. So if you're thinking about purchasing a used Xterra make sure the fluid leakages issue has been taken care of first and take the vehicle to a Nissan dealership and have them do an examination of the engine with their Nissan certified mechanics and equipment, they will let you know if sludge is building up in the engine. I made the mistake of taking it to non Nissan mechanics who charged me a lot of money trying to figure out what the problem was. It wasn't until somebody said you had better take it to the Nissan dealership even if it's a long ways away because only they can give you a diagnosis of this problem. And he was right. If you determine that the transmission fluid & sludge problems are not going to be issues with the car, then go ahead and buy it, otherwise stay away. Maybe look to some years outside the 2004-2007 period. If not for those two issues I would have given the Xterra a glowing review. As it is those two huge negatives negate the many positives. Another negative for Nissan was their stubbornness in not admitting the problem and working with owners, they eventually lost in court but it was too late for me. I'll never forgive them for that and won't buy another Nissan product because of it.
Love It but
Got Mine new. Loved it and babied it. Great power, handling and easy to drive and park. No problems at all. Literally NONE. Then.....75K and it fell apart. AC, water pump, differential, belt tensioner, rattles galore. It was like I got into someone else's vehicle. Maintenance was unbelievable. Hoses--- look out, there are a bunch and they COST. Brakes. WOW. Transmission fluid. Unbelievable. Sealed unit and ONLY dealer can get the "special" fluid easily. Nothing is ever in stock and will sit at dealer or even local guys) for days waiting. I still LOVE my baby, but Ford is my next bet.
Loved it. now I hate it.
Everything I needed in a SUV and the stereo was simply the best. I had 3 trouble free years with the exception of the trailer hitch recall. Then the first of what was to become an endless string of repairs began with the $500 gas sender. Another known defective Nissan part that we the consumer had to eat. 3 months later, new brakes and front U joints. New battery and tires at 40,000 miles. Had the recall for the airbag sensor fixed in early 2010 along with a radiator flush. This September fell victim to the radiator failure/ tranny fry. I'm having it fixed independently as Nissan refused any assistance. I am also suing Nissan for my costs. Been a Nissan man for a while. No more.
Transmission Failures
2005 Nissan Xterras and Pathfinders have a known and fairly widespread problem with radiator failures. When the radiator fails, it dumps engine coolant (antifreeze) into the transmission. This of course ruins the transmission. Total repair cost is over $5,000. Nissan has not issued a service bulletin on this problem and according to senior person in "Consumer Relations" he had never heard of this problem before.
I Made it to 140k Miles
I have been pretty pleased overall with my 2005 Xterra. I have over 140,000 miles on it and I'm just now experiencing major issues with it. I've had recurring issues with the O2 sensors going out more than once and now I need a new catalytic converter. I wasn't aware of the transmission and radiator issues on the 2005 models until I read this post. As it turns out, I too have an issue with a cracked radiator leaking into my tranny and now I need to replace both. I thought it could have been due to a minor fender bender a few months back but now I'm not so sure, especially because I was hit in the rear. Seems like I got lucky to have made it as far as I did on mine.
It just won’t die!
Had this Xterra for a long time the biggest common issue is the radiator failing and transmission fluid mixing with coolant it lasted till 280k before it killed transmission, there is a very simple fix just bypass the rad all together and run tranny lines directly to front transmission cooler and you will never have a problem again! It has never broken down besides that issue, fuel mileage is decent for what it is, 4x4 is legendary, the Xterra is extremely well built and rugged, I can’t see myself buying any other suv, it’s now at 340k and no signs of dying, only major repairs were the transmission replacement at 280,000, rear leaf springs at 334k they were breaking pieces off typical, and the alternator at 335,000, and the fuel tank straps, I’d recommend it to anyone dare I say it it’s more reliable then a 4Runner?

Outstanding transportation
This is my wife's car. We purchased it for our move to N.VA from TX, because we would be back in snowy country in winter. She loves this vehicle, and it performs best in her hands. Her last trip to GA produced 23 mpg, with the "service engine soon" light on. I expect to keep this vehicle for many years unless gas goes over $5/gal. It is highly dependable, and perfect for our travels. Many will complain about performance/comfort issues, but most of these are people who are ignorant of what this thing is. It is a TRUCK! It is supposed to be tough. It's supposed to be rugged. The commercial says it best, "Everything you need. Nothin' you don't." Thank you.
2005 Xterra Stay Away
Radiator fluid will eventually leak into the transmission and destroy it. Be ready for high repair costs. Nissan does not stand behind this vehicle. Most dealers will get you to sign the purchased as is document right away even though they are aware of this factory defect.

Very durable, versatile vehicle
These vehicles DO NOT have a transmission flaw. Most vehicles with auto trans, has the trans cooler inside the radiator. On certain xterra models 05-09 and maybe the 2010 had an issue where the seal in the radiator would let coolant mix with the tranny fliud. That is what ruins the transmission. Coolant will destroy the engine if it gets in the oil and the transmission if it gets in the tranny fluid. All u have to do is check the fluid occasionally to make sure it's not mixing or simply replace the radiator. Radiators are not expensive and easy to replace. I can not understand how so many people are having issues and spending 3-4k for repairs, when it is so avoidable. People don't pay attention and are ignorant, too lazy to do a little reasearch. Also, mechanics / shops / dealers not having enough intelligence to educate people. Some mechanics are stupid n don't care. Check you fluid, change your fluid periodically, even if u replace the radiator or install an aftermarket trans cooler and these transmission will last for a Very long time. I found an 05 with 6sp manual transmission, so I wouldn't have to deal with this ridiculous issue. These excellent vehicles and very dependable. You give it good quality simple maintenance, care for it like a mature person and u will be surprised atvhiw long it will last.
Hanging on by a thread
I love the car but will never purchase another Nissan. I bought the car new and starting at 15k miles the repairs started and never ended: tensioned assembly replaced three times, all brake assemblies replaced at 25k miles, transmission and radiator replaced due to fluid peeking into the transmission, cracked transfer case, bad veil and oil sending units, abs assembly on the driver side completely failed, coolant leaking onto passenger side firewall. Fortunately I purchased the 100k extended. I have 105k miles on the car. My total out of pocket for the past year would have been $18k if not for the warranty!! That is a new car! Nissan also damaged car during repairs and refused to pay.
A Nissan... .. NEVER AGAIN
2005 bought my Nissan Xterra with a platinum warranty, thank ggid because I had it only a few months and the service eng light came on. Nissan couldnt figure their owncar out. In and out of rge shop for 5 wks, replaced serveral things b 4 realizing it was a computer problem warranty covered it nd it was fine until about 70, 000. Then the tranny and raidiator went. Ever since its been a expensive nightmare. Of now no warranty so Nissan in Vallejo. CA where i purchased it in 2005 they were like no warranty "sorry about ur luck, but o'well. So i fixed it and now it hasn't been the same. One prob after another. Its been at my mechanics more in the last 10 months then with me. Problems: tranny, radiator, timing chain my decisionn to replace, catallitc converter, fuel pump, one sensor then another....now about $6000 into i hate to get rid of it after pumping that much money into it. Faulty radiator design destroys transmission
I too loved my Xterra up until a couple of months ago. Bad engine design results in a faulty radiator part leaking radiator fluid into the transmission, destroying the transmission and leading to upwards of $5-6k in repair costs. Early signs include a low rumbling while driving as though driving over rumble strips and disappear if you slow or accelerate. Do NOT ignore this! If you do you could end up with engine overheating at best or transmission failure while driving possibly resulting in an accident. This problem occured for me at 90K miles is a common occurance and for others has occured at as low as 50K. Nissan is fully aware of and has done nothing to fix the problem.
2005 Nissan Xterra Off Road 6MT 4WD
For the price, it's quite a roomy SUV with quite a powerful engine. THE CONS: The transmission is quite noisy and feels like driving a truck. Shifting is not as smooth as it would be in a car. Noise carries inside especially when shifting gears. Lacks the smoothe ride of a car or a luxury SUV. The dash is very dreary. Front passenger seat not very comfortable. The vinly lined cargo are tends to get scratched. Bad at handling corners. THE PROS: Fun to drive, especially on straight roads. Good performance(0-60 in under 8 sec). Pricing. Cloth seats have a unique fabric that give it a rugged look. Descent fuel efficieny when you take into account that it's a SUV and has a 265hp engine.
Solid SUV
If you're expecting a plush SUV, this is not for you. The ride is not overly rough and the power is exceptional. The interior is solid with plenty of room for its class of SUV. Overall a very strong performer!!
Loved it until this year
I bought it new, this year has been hell.I spent about 2k in one month. then the catalytic converters went out. Covered by warranty but Celebrity Nissan did a horrible job with the repair and charged me 200 for some testing that no one can explain. In the end Reed Nissan had to put a new engine in it about a month ago. Still having problems with transmission slipping but no one will take responsibility for it. Big surprise. Nissan of North America will do nothing for you if you have problems. I want to get rid of this car now. Until this year I loved it but I'm so disappointed now with the dealership and Nissan in general. Does anyone stand behind their products anymore. NO!
Nothing beats the Goat
My husband and I refer to my truck as the Billy Goat or the X-terrible, because it gets out of anything. Frankly, it's unstoppable. We tow our 24 foot trailer with it, and can get out of any snowy condition. I totally disagree with some of the other comments about the ride-we have 2 kids who love taking trips in our X. We recently took ours from CT to Penn, VT and RI. It's plenty comfortable, and we love the great capabilities and thoughtful extras. It was the only man shift available that could tow 5K lbs. It's got so much pickup, that it never seems winded on the hwy. Great multi-purpose ute. Great machine - buy it. What other vehicle has a tent that you can hook to the back?
dissappointed with nissan
Loved the bright yellow color of this sporty suv. Boy was I dissappointed when the radio display malfunctioned at 15000 miles. I was even more dissappointed when the air condition went out completely. We live in Florida so air is a must and the compressor is pricey and should not have went out on a nissan so new. going to trade this on a RELIABLE toyota.
Found a friend with Nissan
Owned a Cadillac CTS when I bought "The X" and didn't drive the CTS for three weeks because I loved The X so much. Purchased used 05/2010 at 65K, now has 101K. I have replaced NOTHING! Solid, reliable truck with compartments everywhere for storage. Finally sold my Cadillac because I liked the Nissan better. I will stay with Nissan as long as they keep making vehicles like this one. My ONLY complaint: Back seat leg room. My friends have a lot of trouble getting in and out. One other thing: Tire pressure light comes on after traveling a constant speed for 40-50 miles. Does it every time. I think it's the new tires. Not sure...
330000 km Canada
Great vehicle very reliable I was t-boned in my 2008 tacoma. So though id save money and buy an 05 xterra se . Changed front wheel bearing when purchased and did all new suspension and exhaust . Picked this xterra up for 4000 bucks best money Ive ever spent . I swear its more reluable then the tacoma I had . Would buy another once this one dies if it ever does.

470,000 Km. Still running strong.
My vehicle has four hundred and seventy thousand kilometres on it and still can out accelerate most 8 cylinder pick up trucks. She does not burn any oil and shifts very well. Traction and off road performance is. Ery good. The suspension still is tight and the ride quality good for a truck. Exterior body shows no rust or paint flaws. HOWEVER she burns a lot of gas and is a very heavy vehicle with high wind resistance which not helped by the built in roof top storage. Steering is excellent but it takes room. It is a very large station wagon , more realistically a stout like up truck. Brakes can be a problem particularly if you experience a high idle rpm ( hitch can be re-taught by following a long 3 step process. Exhaust and battery have been replaced in the last 12 month. Locks and tailgate problem are common. I do not know anyone who still pretends the back tailgate works. They corrode and their is no factory interior mechanism to open the tailgate although many people have used the flair kit recess in the rear tailgate to install a implement rod release from that recess. Nail a major component breaks down I will continue to use it qlthough for longer trips the Nissan Rogue costs about 50% of the fuel costs of the Xterra.

Xterra
I love this truck. I have been driving Explorers since 94. This thing smokes them 10 to 1. Plenty of power and off road it rocks. I go places where some jeeps have trouble. The ride is on par with the explorer. But the motor is way better. Mpg is about the same I avg about 20mpg 60/40 driving hwy/city. No problems of any kind yet.No rattles or squeaks I am at 60000 miles. Time for some new rubber. I just couldn't be happier.
2005 Xterra- Great drive
We recently purchased an 05 Xterra to replace the wife's Subaru Outback. The Xterra has a solid feel to it. The engine delivers excellent low end power & the acceleration is great even adhering to the 4K rpm break-in limit. The ride is firm without being harsh. The steering is a bit vague on center but the overall feel is good. The brake pedal feels a bit soft but the stopping action is very good. The seats are firm but could use more side support. Overall the Xterra is an excellent choice.
Nissan defective radiator fries tranny
Loved the truck for the 1st 3 years. Even after eating the defective fuel sender repair $500. But now I have fallen victim to the growing radiator leaking into the transmission defect. Nissan is refusing to acknowledge this growing problem. If you have a Nissan 4 wheel drive circa 2005-07 go to an independent mechanic and have transmission fluid checked for contamination. If you catch it in time you can head off the $7000 transmission/radiator replacement.
The BEST ever!!
This SUV is so awesome. My husband was not too sure about my choice. After riding in this only twice...he now wants one for himself. He loves the huge truck tires. This rides and drives like a truck. The insurance rate was so low. I went from a 98 dodge van to this vehicle and only raised my monthly insurance by $15. WOW! This is a truly amazing vehicle. I will never own anything else. Keep it UP!!
Fun to drive with a few tradeoffs
The drivetrain of the Xterra is great. The engine/ transmission work together well and the 4x4 works great. Rear seat entry is tough but roomy once you get in (I'm 6'2"). The plastic interior is easily scratched. We've had problems with a squeak in the hood latch and a noise from the fuel pump. Both of these noises were loud and took a while for the dealer to fix. Overall the Xterra has been a decent vehicle with a few minor problems.
Fun to drive
Bought this a year ago at 67K miles. In that time I've put about 20K on it. This thing is a lot of fun to drive. It will get up and go! Turns on a dime for an SUV. Seats 5 comfortably. The rear and passenger seats fold down easily and allow for a lot of cargo. It rides nicely and is very comfortable both on and off road. By off road I mean actual trails. Mine has VDC and it works great in snow & mud. Great visibility in all directions. The interior is cheap plastic. Things slide around in the trunk. Tire Pressure siren goes off a lot. Im not going to overinflate the tires so I live with it. I check the trans fluid for murkiness often just to be on the safe side. Havent had an issue yet.
A great bargain
Well built, powerful, and easy to drive in tight quarters. High seating position gives a commanding view of the road, but the short wheelbase means it can park where the soccer-mom Suburbans can't.
Not a "car" SUV
If you are looking for a "car" SUV, look at a CRV or RAV4. If you want a real truck that can traverse real off road terrain, tow substantial loads, and has enough power to blow off v-8 powered trucks, and for way less than $30K...no need to look further!
I love my " X"
I love my "x". i will continue to buy an x-terra for as long as they make them. I am going on 40,xxx and it is still the best choice I made. Even with gas prices jumping i will take out a loan to cont. driving my "x".
Fun New 05 X
We just picked up our new 05 Xterra offroad 4x4. This vehicle is so much fun to drive. I was thinking about an 04 but as soon as I got in the drivers seat of the 05 I could feel the power difference. The X sits up high so you can get a clear view of the road ahead. The ride is smooth and the handling is superb. The X turns on a dime. You can get a great deal from the dealership if you do your homework first, I know because I got the vehicle for invoice price. I love the new Xterra.
One of a kind SUV
I purchased my SE 4-WD x new in sept 2005. It has 20k miles now and I really enjoy this truck. It is a blast to drive. A V-6 that feels like a V-8! 5 spd auto is awesome. Rockford Fosgate stereo is great. I added Gibson CAT back exhaust, and AirRaid cold air intake. 75 mph on the highway and 21 mpg. Mechanically I belive this is one tough truck. Easy to clean interior as well. Here are my complaints: Platic materials need to be more durable in a truck marketed the way this one is. 3 warranty trips to the dealership for squeaks, rattles, and hitch recall. Local dealer is really good.
Xterra Offroad 05
I have owned a Nissan and was very happy with the quality and reliability of Nissan's products. I went from a Nissan pickup to the Xterra and am very satisfied with this SUV. Fuel mileage is better than I expected (6 cyl.) Performance, quality, looks/styling are all good. One suggestion to Nissan, cutback on the amount of interior plastic, otherwise the Xterra is an excellant SUV.
XE Model, AT, 4WD
I purchased this SUV in June 2004. I have been very satisfied with it. While it is built for rugged use, it is excellent around town and on the highway as long as one realized this automobile is buit on a truck frame and responds accordingly. The interior is comfortable with well thought out space usage. No repairs have been required to date. I highly recommend this SUV.
5 year review of 2005 Nissan Xterra SE
I bought this vehicle new, ordered in the color and trim level that I wanted. In the 5 years I have owned it I have had to replace (under warranty - the fuel tank sensor, a u-joint). The CD player quit working just off of warranty and I haven't changed it as I use an ipod with FM modulator. The vehicle overall have been fantastic. I have put a couple hundred thousand hassle free kms on it and it hasn't had any more problems than any other vehicle I have ever owned. It's still solid, tight and peppy. Excellent for a small family, great for work use in the oilfield. Reliable.
Awesome Vehicle
I looked at last years and this years. What an improvement. Plenty of power, smart features. Basically like the Pathfinder, just a little shorter. I totally recommend it! I only have about 100 miles on it, but I love it already. It's a Nissan, so the engine should be reliable. AWESOME is all I can say.
Fun to Drive SUV
I purchased my 2005 Xterra almost 2 months ago and I'm loving every day in it. The Power is more than I'll ever need and the styling is much improved over the previous model. I really like the interior design and the front and rear seats are very comfortable. The dash is well organized and easy to access. The ride is more truck-like than car like-on the street, but it's a trade-off I'll make for this beast. My fuel efficiency has been around 16 in the city so be prepared to pay for the thrill. The radio has ok reception but the CD player sounds great. The rear seats are very easy to remove for extra space.
Xterra - best of both worlds
I bought a 4x4 Xterra because I wanted something that was fun to go off roading and camping in and was also good around town. I have only one complaint and that's the gas mileage. But what can you expect for a very strong V6 pulling a 4600 lb vehicle around? Other than that it's great. Good around town and great off road. Quite possibly the best composite on/off road vehicle around.
No complaints
I thought I'd write a review since I have been using Edmund's for some time now and I found the other reviews helpful. I have owned this truck for a month and have had nothing but fun driving it. I haven't used it off road, but you can feel it wants to tear it up. It has good acceleration with the 6 speed and it cruises at 80m.p.h. on the highways without even trying, around 2500rpm. I would purchase this car again in a second. My other car is a BMW540i and I'm driving this one more. I never thought I'd ever say that about another car. So, I seriously have no complaints.
powerful upgrade
No question the redesigned X-terra is more powerful and more spacious. My next door neighbor has a 2004 x-terra and wants to upgrade, now that he has experiences the new model. cons: I agree with Edmunds that there is some weakness on the interior, but very little. The seat material seems prone to snag, but is great at allowing for the flow of heat (and keeping you cool) on those hot summer days. Did I mention that this thing is really powerful! If you are thinking about getting an X-terra, don't even consider buying a used one, there is just too much improvement in the 2005 to consider an older model.
