I wanted the most capable off-road vehicle without having to modify. Think Jeep Rubicon capability in a far more reliable and refined truck that also seats five. I live in Colorado where off-roading is a passion. With rear lockers, hill descent control, 9.5" of ground clearance and the new 4.0 265 HP engine, you have one rugged and extremely capable 4x4. Pleasant and fun on-road with a well thought out no-nonsense interior and full instrumentation. A winning combination all around. My Xterra has been 100% reliable with no mechanical or fit and finish issues. The Xterra has exceeded all my expectations.

Great Truck for a Buck

I purchased my Nissan X-Terra SE in 2005 brand new. I wanted BASIC reliable transportation and 4wheel drive. Live in the northeast. I have just under 40000 miles I've replaced the brakes all around once along with routine maintenance. The truck always starts always gets me where I have to go. Wish the gas mileage was better but I knew what I was getting when I made the purchase. The engine has loads of power and handle like a stable truck. This is not meant to be a fancy ride. Its a basic good honest truck, that's it.

5 Year Review

I bought mine brand new in 2005. I now have 116,000 miles on the vehicle. I do a lot of driving. This is a fun car to drive on road and off road. I have taken it on many off road trails and it handles very well off road and will climb steep hills, drive through muddy roads, deep snow. Quality wise it's a good vehicle, I've had problems with the CD player, I'm on my 3rd one right now. I've had some squeaky belts replaced a few, this can be annoying with the car squeaking. The most expensive repair I've had is when the computer went out on the car and the car was out of warranty.

Best Value SUV, Most Improved

The redesigned Xterra is one of the best values in the market. With the new 265hp engine power is no longer a problem. Excellent engine braking with the manual transmission makes the HDC unneeded, glad I didn't get it. Gearing is low enough for actual off-road use, great power in the low end. The clutch cancel and locking rear make this vehicle a great value without expensive add-ons that other comparable vehicles require for off roading. Wind noise is greatly reduced from previous design overall much quieter ride. Built on a true truck platform this vehicle rides like it should, not like a car. What makes this one really stand out for me is attention to details such as wiper function.

After wearing out my age-old Blazer, I needed a new SUV. Out of all the different makes and models that I tested, the Xterra is the only one that had the total package - great appearance, excellent offroad capability, outstanding acceleration for an SUV, a little attitude, and a very clean interior. I have tie down points all over the interior which is very useful when packing up for a trip. No other smaller SUV looks, feels, or rides as good as this. It has the best roof rack ever- extremely durable, held up perfectly when I slammed my kayak rack into a low-hanging pole. No damage at all to the car, just to the add-on kayak rack. Would recommend it to any active person needing a good SUV.

Great horsepower, seems like it has more room than the pathfinder and it seems it has the same options as the pathfinder. Fuel is better than the 04 model with a bigger engine. Did not seem worth the money to spend more for the pathfinder. My wife does not like big vehicles but loves the Xterra. It does drive like a truck, well it is a truck.

I bought this for Pennsic, an annual event with the SCA. My fiance and I were able to fit 2 weeks of camping stuff, a period tent, 2 suits of armor, a half dozen pole arms and 10 cases of beer in this with that much of a hitch. Engine is strong and fuel economy is good. Mine is fully loaded with all the options and I thought that the dealership gave me a very good price (250 over invoice... thank you Edmunds). I like the fact that I can take this anywhere... being on a TRUCK platform will do that for you. I would recommend this to active people that do alot of outdoors stuff... it can be a tough drive... if you don't go off black top go with a Murano.

Best SUV for my dollars. I owned a 4Runner, a Yukon and a CRV. The new Xterra is by far the best. Rugged yet comfortable, powerful yet economical, simple yet refined. I'm getting a little over 20 mpg in combined driving with AC and couldn't be happier with the way it handles, drives and looks. A true SUV for on and off road. Nissan has built a winner.

I must say that after searching for over a year and test driving dozens of new cars, i made the right choice with the X. Great ability, great looks, and yes it could stand a little spicing up on the inside, great power, great EVERYTHING. i drove land rover, jeep, and many more but none came close. it drives slightly like a truck (if you're used to cars) but it is supposed to, it IS a truck, a truck that can outperform, both on and off road, most others. maybe the Wrangler has it off road. so if you want a good ride, a lot of power, speed, fun and great styling this is the SUV for you. if you want a road SUV with a car like ride look else where, this one is for on and serious off Roading.

I previously owned a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder and purchased a 2003 Toyota Tundra. I missed the capabilities of an SUV and my 2005 Xterra SE 4x4 has filled the void! Love the "new" style. The 265 hp engine delivers. Solid and sturdy on the highway and looking forward to taking in off-road. Lots of storage space and the rear bumper step feature along with tubular steps helps access the roof rack. The 380 watt Rockford Fosgate audio system "rocks". You feel the deep bass in the driver seat.

Fell in love by the time I pulled out on the test drive that lasted less than 3 minutes. Fantastic in the rain and floods we have here. Too bad I could only get 3 tanks of gas into it before I was broadsided and totaled. He hit me doing over 60mph. Thought I was going over, but the stability controls and such kept me pointed and landed safe and sound. RECOMMEND the side air bags. It was the one option I didn't care about and turned out it saved me from major injury. Next one will be yellow so even another "vision impaired" driver can see me. Just waiting for Farmers to get me a check.

I went in to look at the 350z and drove off with the X. I was so impressed with the horsepower, the interior comfort and the look. I bought the 6 speed which is amazing for gas mileage. Living in Florida I opted not to purchase the Off Road 4x4, instead the Utility Pack which included Stability Control and ABLS. This is my first SUV. I dont think I will ever purchase a car again.

This car is a wreck waiting to happen. Maybe it's just my Xterra, but the steering is jumpy, it doesn't hold it's line in Hi-way driving and be careful if you think about taking it off-road. I've taken mine several times into the hills and mud of North Carolina and if you take a bump or a rut too hard the jolt the car gives you can easily put you in the passenger seat. My 1993 Jeep Cherokee handled the terrain with ease...even though I am going to get destroyed on my trade in....this car is going back and I'm buying something else. Good Luck

My 2005 "S" Xterra 4WD with all the options of the "SE" still runs great and is fun to drive! I don't have fog lights and never found a pre-fab kit to install or I would have installed them. The only failures was the original battery - as usual on all new cars and the rear shocks had to be replaced at about 55,000 miles. The Xterra tows my 19' Bayliner just fine. Plenty of power every where I go. Off road is a blast! Now I have over 80,000 miles on the SUV and haven't had a brake job! (Had to have one every 25,000 miles on my GM cars.) I hope to buy a new Xterra in a couple of years. Nissan makes a great car/SUV. NOTE: THIS IS AN AUTOMATIC!

This vehicle proved itself in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. My wife and I, plus our 3 dogs returned to the Mississippi gulf coast 3 days after the storm. Trying to be prepared for everything we may need, I purchased a trailer hitch mounted cargo carrier. Then we loaded this vehicle down with everything from small window AC's,cases of water/food, 6- 5gal gas cans full, bateries, dog food, etc. Things were tied to the cargo carrier on top, under our feet, and in every possible space. The vehicle performed beautifully on the road, going around downed tree/debris, cutting through yards and through shallow ditches. Wife said she felt secure in the vehicle.

We had a 2002 SE 4WD SC, put 64,000 miles on it and needed another with a warranty, AC compressor went out, $1000 to replace. Loved it all but the mpg and the BF Goodwrench tires, wore out at 32,000. Stadium seating-great for the kids. 64/40 split-great for the carseat. No carpet in the back- bonus. Rockford Fosegate stereo-ROCK ON!good placement of subwoofer for wife. 265hp-nice punch when you need it. We had fun in the snow with the 2002, waiting to see with the 2005. We look foward to buy again.

I love my Xterra, it was everything I wanted. Having said that, I am disappointed with the Rockford Fosgate stereo. I've had to get it replaced twice, lost over $100 worth of cd's. I also had issues with the A/C not working which took two trips to the dealership to get fixed. All this has been under warranty, but I will have to trade before the warranty is up, I can't afford the maintenance. At my last oil change I was told there were problems with the suspension system. What next????

I purchased this SUV in June 2004. I have been very satisfied with it. While it is built for rugged use, it is excellent around town and on the highway as long as one realized this automobile is buit on a truck frame and responds accordingly. The interior is comfortable with well thought out space usage. No repairs have been required to date. I highly recommend this SUV.

I've owned Chevy SUVs in the past but had not driven one (SUV) for several years until the Xterra. I wanted one for awhile but the engine choices just seemed too limited and the design was almost there until the new style and engine of 2005. This is the most fun vehicle to drive ever! The fuel economy, while not the greatest, is admirable. I drive 90% on the highway and get about 21 mpg, however, you don't buy one of these for great mileage but for everything else this baby has to offer, and the list is huge. What a great experience this has been, of course I've only had it a few months so hopefully I'll still be singing praises in a couple of years!

Absolutely loved my Xterra, kept it maintained and planned to keep it a very long time. Then the problems started after I hit 60,000 miles. Fuel sensor, several batteries, belts (that had screeched since 1 year old and dealer couldn't figure out), then the tensioners, timing chain. After that $1,000+ repair, saw online all the radiator leaks into the transmission being reported and decided to cut my losses and traded it in. Received notification of an extended warranty on the radiator/tranny failure to 80,000 miles the week after I traded it. Had 70,000 on it anyway and would not have been willing to take a chance on needing that $5,000 repair. Depressing.

If you are looking for a vehicle that puts the "Utility" back in SUV then this vehicle is for you. This is not one of those sissy soccer mom SUV's!!! I bought my Xterra a few months ago and I absolutely love it. There is no where this cannot go and nothing it cannot do. Thought about getting a Jeep Liberty (less interior room and more expensive) and a Toyota 4Runner (much more expensive feature-to- feature), but overall the Xterra was a much better value. Absolutely no regrets

This is a fun car to drive with a lot of pluses, although there are also some negatives. The pluses include the industrial styling - if that's your thing, lots of power, storage galore, easy to clean interior, vehicle stability control, low tire pressure warning gauge, very quiet interior - even at 80+mph, interior tie down points everywhere, great door cup holders, and a great sounding stereo system. The negatives include interior plastic pieces that scratch very easily, chintzy chrome handles, semi-functional center cup holders, difficult rear entry/exit due to short wheelbase, base stereo does not read MP3 cds or have an auxiliary audio input.

I purchased my 2005 Xterra almost 2 months ago and I'm loving every day in it. The Power is more than I'll ever need and the styling is much improved over the previous model. I really like the interior design and the front and rear seats are very comfortable. The dash is well organized and easy to access. The ride is more truck-like than car like-on the street, but it's a trade-off I'll make for this beast. My fuel efficiency has been around 16 in the city so be prepared to pay for the thrill. The radio has ok reception but the CD player sounds great. The rear seats are very easy to remove for extra space.

This 2006 Motor Trend Sport/Utility of the Year boasts a powerful 4.0-liter, 265-horsepower DOHC V-6 engine that puts out 284 pound-feet of torque and is fun to get dirty. The Xterra will suffer most at the gas pump. The car gets an EPA-tested 16 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway, but those who haul heavy stuff or play a lot off-road will see those numbers go even lower. Front-passenger seats have decent support and are large enough to accommodate most adults, but the backseat in particular is small and cramped, and it offers little legroom. The most disappointing thing about the 2006 Nissan Xterra by far is its gas mileage.

I just picked up my Xterra last night, so I've only driven it 50 miles, mostly city. I haven't loved a vehicle this much since my 1995 Ford Bronco. The Xterra is definetly not a luxury vehicle, and although my last SUV (Toyota Sequoia Limited)was, I find I don't miss the plush interior and "bells and Whistles." What the Xterra lacks in interior luxury it makes up for in other ways. The Rockford Fosgate-powered stereo system is awesome, you can feel the base in your seat! The new engine in the Xterra is so powerful you really have to watch yourself. Ultimately the Xterra rides like a truck not a car, to me that's a good thing. It's a great truck!

The 2005 Nissan XTerra SE is fully a utilitarian vehicle with a rugged design. The Rockford- Fosgate stereo addition is a very nice added feature. Seats are heavy duty and the included floor mats look like something from a constuction site (a good thing). Visibility out of this vehicle is excellent from all sides. It's a lot of fun to drive and has a youthful, sexy appeal to it. There is plenty of cargo room in the back. Has great side steps and a step on the back bumper to easily get to the roof for securing cargo. Ride is a bit rough, but that is fine with me -- it rides like a truck. I won't complain about gas mileage because, hey, it's an SUV folks.

I fully researched this truck before buying. Had given a glowing review before-now take it all back. Had it for 2.5 years, now the cam seal is leaking oil on exhaust manifold. Has totally shaken my faith in the truck. As soon as it's fixed-selling totally. Bought this truck for the rugged off road looks and sport utility features. Now it's just a sexy piece of crap. I really liked driving it-the 6 speed manual is great, and the horsepower was outstanding, until it started leaking like a sieve. My kids and I were really upset over having to give it up. After this experience, I will neever buy a Nissan again! I've had used cars that lasted longer than this!

Nissan's entire product line has come a long way since it's bland offerings of the late 90s. The new Xterra is no exception. Traded a 2 year old RAV4 with a rattly dashboard and 4 cyl. engine. This is my wife's car. I have an 04 Frontier w/3.3 liter engine (same as 04 Xterra). 4.0 liter in 05 is noticable peppier. We actually went to buy an 04 on clearance and decided to spring for the extra $. My wife loves it and it is a head turner. Test drove a Highlander (nice car, but boring) and a Pilot (surprisely uncomfortable seats) and settled on this cool car and Nissan's reputation for dependability. Similar to Pathfinder in looks, but a lot more affordable.

I had been considering the Xterra for about 2 years. I previously had a GMC Jimmy. I would rather have one Xterra than 10 GM models. The design of the Xterra is overall more appealing and more user friendly. Nissan was definetely thinking when they designed this SUV.

I don't have too much to say as I only had the car about 3 weeks..BUT Just yesterday me and two other people went off an embankment and rolled my 2005 Xterra, two huge rocks impacted to car, one right above the drivers head. we walked away with only scratches and bruises. I know the official safety star rating is 4 stars, but I give it 5...and I'll be getting another one

Overall, a very solid vehicle. Nissan delivers on the promise of a no BS vehicle. If you want leather(like some misguided reviewers), buy a Pathfinder. If you want a solid vehicle, no-nonsense performance, good off-road performance (even with an SE), and reasonable creature comforts (go for the Pathfinder for Luxury), then buy this vehicle. No other brand fits this niche. By the way, this is an SUV, so don't expect great mileage. Pros include power, great engineering, comfort, utility, great handling (for an SUV), and the rear bumper side steps (just cleared the snow off the top, awesome). Cons: uneducated buyers. If you want a car- like ride or economy, buy a hybrid sedan.

We're very pleased so far with our Xterra. It has room for our kids and is very versatile. Interior is easy to clean, big plus with kids, VERY capable offroad. Engine has plenty of power, which I upgraded with an air intake and exhaust system, probably got me 15 to 20 extra HP. Now it sounds as good as it goes. Handles well and is easy to park.

Purchased a new left-over 2005 Xterra S two weeks ago. Was looking at the Liberty, but the Xterra has so many more features and rides much better, and got it for a slightly better price. The truck has a great stance - aggressive and stylish - and the dark black is an eye-catcher. Lots of compliments. Very comfortable inside and the truck just rides and feels solid. Just as fun as my 2001 Jetta. The seats are great and the 6 speed manual is german-car quality.

Get up and go. Anywhere. My wife had an '04 and the differences are tremendous. 4x4 is flawless in the snow. Gas mileage is around 20 mpg. Lots of storage compartments and lots of cup holders are a plus.

I have the 05 off-road 4wd with a manual tranny for about a mth now. This SUV performs really well in moderate snow condition. Works great on steep climbs. The Rockford Fosgate sound package is not quite as impressive as they advertise it to be. I like the 6 spd transmission, but don't really see the use for the 6th gear. You probably will never need to use it unless you live in Montana or something. The overall look of this vehicle is quite impressive and I am very happy with it thus far. You cannot buy a better SUV for the price that these things are selling for.

You have to love the power and handling of this vehicle! I wish it would get maybe a little better gas mileage, but then the power would have to be lowered...guess paying a little more on your gas bill makes it worth it in the long run...shes a bit on the stiffer side, but thats a good thing in my book Mate!

Very happy with the performance so far. No problems after 16,000 miles. I chose the 6 speed because of the better gas mileage and lower cost up front. I spend alot of time on the highway, and i cant complain about the handling and comfort. It helps when you have the optional stereo. Road noise at 80 mph is minimal.

I replace my VW Passat with this vehicle, and based on my experiences with nissan, I am expecting better reliability. First of all, this is a truck, if you want a car, or an SUV that drives like a car -- don't but this vehicle. Utility is great, with little storage spaces everywhere. It drives alright for a truck, and seems pretty stable. I'm 6'4", nad have a enough legroom - something that set it apart from others in its' class. I'm getting about 18 MPG, which is ~ok~, but certainly not good The only real negative is he stock setero -it's gotta go - terrible brakes are a little soft for my liking, but I am comparing it to a BMW 325 and VW Passat.

My wife and I are really happy about our decision to buy a new 2nd gen. Xterra. We were considering buying a H3, but in comparison to what you get for the price, the X made more sense. Don't get me wrong, the H3 is nice (under-powered though) but it's not worth the extra $10k for it. I would say the fit and finish of our Xterra is as good if not better than the H3. The cabin is quiet when cruising around. Interior noise under acceleration though seems a little loud but hey that's a good thing because it reminds you got a little monster under the hood. The X definitely has power on tap, which was I think the biggest factor in our decision to buy the X.
