"The 2005 Xterra S is vastly improved over past models. In one day test drove both the Xterra and Honda CR-V and greatly preferred the Xterra. It drives quite smoothly (though you are aware that you're in a truck-based SUV) and is extremely quiet. The interior is thoughtfully designed and comfortable, though certainly not plush. One of the best aspects of the Xterra is its storage capability and its general utility. Negatives are: gas mileage, lack of an optional factory-installed GPS system, audio system. The GPS and audio system aren't big deals and can be solved by after-market units. Gas mileage is a bigger problem, but is no worse than most other comparable SUVs.

The rear bumper started rusting after just 3 years. This is a car that is garage kept. Now the fuel gauge doesn't work because the fuel level sensor is defective. It's a $600 fix that has been a problem with Nissans since 2000. So why do they continue to install defective parts year after year? And there are lots of rattles. No more Nissans for me.

I've been looking for an SUV that looks good and fun to drive and I've found it in the 2005 Xterra. This SUV is awesome with its new upgraded engine, interior, exterior, and a whole lot more. I've been driving this SUV under both street and offroad conditions for the past month and all I have to say is, WOW!!! Its 265HP-V6 has got to be the best upgrade Nissan has given the Xterra. The difference in handling and performance between the 2005 and 2004 model is night and day, not to mention the roominess of the interior compartment!!! If you are looking for a reasonably priced SUV that has everything you'll ever need, you can't go wrong with the 2005 Xterra!! One word - AWESOME!!

I wanted the most capable off-road vehicle without having to modify. Think Jeep Rubicon capability in a far more reliable and refined truck that also seats five. I live in Colorado where off-roading is a passion. With rear lockers, hill descent control, 9.5" of ground clearance and the new 4.0 265 HP engine, you have one rugged and extremely capable 4x4. Pleasant and fun on-road with a well thought out no-nonsense interior and full instrumentation. A winning combination all around. My Xterra has been 100% reliable with no mechanical or fit and finish issues. The Xterra has exceeded all my expectations.

Traded in 04 Murano. Went from luxury to basic. The X is very simple and rugged. if u get it dirty then leave it there, it looks nice w/ dirt on it. Interior layout is fine. everything is where u would expect it to be. more storage spots than murano. spacious enough to haul things around.

The Xterra is a wonderful car. It drives like a truck. It sits high. It handles well off the road. The six cd in the dash system is awesome. The seats lay completely flat. Plus the car is beautiful and can go from zero to 80 in about 8 seconds.(that was just a test)I don't drive like that always (lol).

I purchased this SUV in June 2004. I have been very satisfied with it. While it is built for rugged use, it is excellent around town and on the highway as long as one realized this automobile is buit on a truck frame and responds accordingly. The interior is comfortable with well thought out space usage. No repairs have been required to date. I highly recommend this SUV.

I bought this vehicle new, ordered in the color and trim level that I wanted. In the 5 years I have owned it I have had to replace (under warranty - the fuel tank sensor, a u-joint). The CD player quit working just off of warranty and I haven't changed it as I use an ipod with FM modulator. The vehicle overall have been fantastic. I have put a couple hundred thousand hassle free kms on it and it hasn't had any more problems than any other vehicle I have ever owned. It's still solid, tight and peppy. Excellent for a small family, great for work use in the oilfield. Reliable.

I purchased my 2005 Xterra almost 2 months ago and I'm loving every day in it. The Power is more than I'll ever need and the styling is much improved over the previous model. I really like the interior design and the front and rear seats are very comfortable. The dash is well organized and easy to access. The ride is more truck-like than car like-on the street, but it's a trade-off I'll make for this beast. My fuel efficiency has been around 16 in the city so be prepared to pay for the thrill. The radio has ok reception but the CD player sounds great. The rear seats are very easy to remove for extra space.

I just picked up my Xterra last night, so I've only driven it 50 miles, mostly city. I haven't loved a vehicle this much since my 1995 Ford Bronco. The Xterra is definetly not a luxury vehicle, and although my last SUV (Toyota Sequoia Limited)was, I find I don't miss the plush interior and "bells and Whistles." What the Xterra lacks in interior luxury it makes up for in other ways. The Rockford Fosgate-powered stereo system is awesome, you can feel the base in your seat! The new engine in the Xterra is so powerful you really have to watch yourself. Ultimately the Xterra rides like a truck not a car, to me that's a good thing. It's a great truck!

Nissan's entire product line has come a long way since it's bland offerings of the late 90s. The new Xterra is no exception. Traded a 2 year old RAV4 with a rattly dashboard and 4 cyl. engine. This is my wife's car. I have an 04 Frontier w/3.3 liter engine (same as 04 Xterra). 4.0 liter in 05 is noticable peppier. We actually went to buy an 04 on clearance and decided to spring for the extra $. My wife loves it and it is a head turner. Test drove a Highlander (nice car, but boring) and a Pilot (surprisely uncomfortable seats) and settled on this cool car and Nissan's reputation for dependability. Similar to Pathfinder in looks, but a lot more affordable.

No question the redesigned X-terra is more powerful and more spacious. My next door neighbor has a 2004 x-terra and wants to upgrade, now that he has experiences the new model. cons: I agree with Edmunds that there is some weakness on the interior, but very little. The seat material seems prone to snag, but is great at allowing for the flow of heat (and keeping you cool) on those hot summer days. Did I mention that this thing is really powerful! If you are thinking about getting an X-terra, don't even consider buying a used one, there is just too much improvement in the 2005 to consider an older model.

Fun to drive, good performance, extremely reliable, excellent service from dealer, gas mileage a little disappointing but would not trade it for performance. At this point I feel this vehicle will be with us a long time. I am anxious to see how it will hold up. My wife loves the styling and looks. I like it too. We purchased it for her. I have my own vehicle. I enjoy driving it because it has very responsive steering and acceleration. The engine has a good sound to it under acceleration. I would enjoy a stronger engine such as offered in the new one.

I bought the "S" model with all the options of the "SE" except the fog lights and expanded sound/CD option. This SUV runs like a race horse! When you push on the gas, you can really feel the 265HP go! Ride is like a truck but not real bumpy... takes the dips excellent and bumps good. Rides like a car on the highway. 4WD is outstanding! In 3 weeks I have driven over 2000 miles with about 100+ in 4WD. It will go just about anywhere off road or in mud. (I have not driven in snow, yet.) Tracksion is great, especially in 4WD LO. I feel very secure going to my favorite camping/fishing location. Really fun to drive!

I have purchsed Nissan cars for years, but as our winters are getting worse and worse, I needed an SUV to travel to my appointments safely. Although gas mileage is not super, the vehicle more than makes up for it. I love the 4wd easy shifting, the reliability of the vehicle, and the way it handles. I wanted a dependable and durable vehicle, not neccessarily with lots of "bells and whistles". I love this vehicle and will never have another car. Did I mention that with 5 dogs, we have added a dog gate behind the back (stadium stacked) seats and they LOVE it. Practical and my pick for an SUV!

This SUV handles great on and off road, the stereo is fantastic. I added my XM satellite radio. You can feel the bass under your seat. My 13 yo loves that! This SUV has the power to get on the freeway quick and handles great. I look forward to driving this SUV every day.

The off-road X-terra I bought is a great combination suv to drive to were you want to go off road, and then to go off-road. It compares favorably with the Jeep Wrangler off-road, but gives you a lot more comfort on the highway. It also has a lot more room inside, and great storage system inside and out. Much wider and roomier than the previous X-Terra's. My only major complaint is with the idiot engineerwho took the sunroof out and replaced it with that plastic bucket and cover on the roof. Now it's supposed to be for wet things, like I want to put my dead fish up there, so it can drip on my roof and get baked in. NICE SMELLING TRUCK DUDE, maybe my waders after a duck hunt so they freeze in.

Amazing vehicle for the money. I traded a 2003 V8 Silverado for this more sensible vehicle. The turning radius is amazing, U-turns are no problem, parking is easy. Silent interior, yet firm suspension for taking turns. Effortless acceleration, plenty of power with instant throtle response. The Xterra looks tough, and stands out from the crowded SUV market. You can smack the dealers around all day and the deals keep coming, so be firm and ask them to add dealer accessories at no charge like step bars, hitch, etc.

My last Nissan, was a 1994 Pathfinder, which is still running like new, so when it came time to purchase a new model, the New Pathfinder didn't fit what I was exactly looking for, so I decided to test drive the 2005 Xterra. It was love all over again... The Xterra is an incredible off road SUV, and drives pretty comfortably in the city too. I am so pleased with my final decision to purchase the new Xterra... If you want a true SUV, Xterra is the model you should check out, because it is an incredible SUV.

Having owned and liked the original Xterra; I still had a few things on my wish list. I wanted more power, an easier to use transfer case and better interior design, especially with regard to the folding of the rear seats. All of these things and more were fixed on the new model. The new engine delivers a rush of power one seldom experiences in a vehicle in this class. The new electronic transfer case is a joy to use even especially when the driver is tired. The rear seats fold flat without the need for removing and storing any cushions. While I thought the older model somewhat more attractive, nearly everthing else is better on the new one. The built-in XM radio is a joy to own!

After wearing out my age-old Blazer, I needed a new SUV. Out of all the different makes and models that I tested, the Xterra is the only one that had the total package - great appearance, excellent offroad capability, outstanding acceleration for an SUV, a little attitude, and a very clean interior. I have tie down points all over the interior which is very useful when packing up for a trip. No other smaller SUV looks, feels, or rides as good as this. It has the best roof rack ever- extremely durable, held up perfectly when I slammed my kayak rack into a low-hanging pole. No damage at all to the car, just to the add-on kayak rack. Would recommend it to any active person needing a good SUV.

Truck does great in all weather, im in the army and currently living in Kansas, lots of snow and ice in the winter, truck does better than a lot of 4x4 trucks, I pass them all the time on the roads stuck in the snow, mpg not as good as I would like but is not bad considering the engine size and h. I own a 2000 Nissan Xterra. I have 160,000 miles on it . Those are over the road, hill and dale and back. I do understand this is for later Xterras, but my plan is to take it to 250,000 then I 'll write another rev iew. We have towed with it, camped with it, we have slept in it. We came up with another reason to have flashing lights and horns to lock the doors, bear repellent, it works. We are planning to buy another one when we hit 250,000 miles. My kayaks also love the roof, they spend alot of time up there traveling. For the money you can't go wrong, it rides smooth, handles like a go kart. We have totally enjoyed it. Like the new step in the bumpers also.

I'm a former Nissan Pathfinder owner (2001 & 2003) who recently "stepped down" to a 2005 Xterra. Well, I realized quickly that there was hardly any "stepping down" whatsoever once I actually started driving the X on a daily basis! This baby is fun to drive and the 2005 has plenty of power (watch your speedometer or old Smokie will get you!!!!) Also, the new 4.0/265HP Engine actually gets better gas mileage than my previous 2 Pathy's ever got - and although this is a SUV, gas mileage so far is more than acceptable and I don't think it will be an issue for me at all. Lots of great forums for Xterra owners (do a google search) and you will see more than enough information on the great X!

I just purchased a 2005 Off Road 4wd model after much research. I love it. This may be one of the most underrated vehicles manufactured this year. The Xterra is solidly built and roughly 15-20k less than the Landrover LR3 or Discovery. While the latter may have the most advanced 4 wheel drive system of any SUV on the road (and posher interior), I bought the Nissan because I value reliability over anything else. I work in the back country and I can't break down. The Off Road edition has a stiffer feel and ride than the 4wd SE models I test drove and if anyone intends to use this vehicle for off-roading I would strongly suggest that you opt for the OR model over an S or SE.

i love this suv..the engine is awesome. i was in the market for an suv and looked at the hummer h3 but it was underpowered. the xterra can handle everything the hummer can with a better engine.

I just got my Xterra and have been driving it like crazy. The engine performs beautifully and it rides very nicely on the highway, even at cruising speed the car maintains a nice quiet interior. Lots of room and great places for storage. I could not be happier with my choice. In it's class there isn't a better SUV on the market. Lots of power, very functional, great design, all in all a great buy.

nice. nice. nice. bought this vehicle to help me rebuild after Hurricane Katrina. The shock came when I was able to haul a 5ft patio door with ease.

So far I've only had my new truck 4 days and I LOVE IT! I love the space, the ride and all the feature it has and more than I expected. I really recommend this vehicle if anyone is looking into buying one. So far the gas mileage is good, as I expected with a truck and not like a car but I still love it.

The criterion was steep. I needed an SUV that not only could get me to the hospital for work in the worst of conditions, but I needed an SUV that appealed to me aesthetically. I also needed an SUV that could comfortably house me, being a 6'2 280 pound powerlifter, I'm not the biggest man on the planet by any stretch, but my back usually extends way past most seats. The Xterra is the all in one package. Well performing off road. Quick and nimble acceleration. As well as plenty of space, although my back still extends past the seats, I am very much comfortable. I test drove many an SUV in the price range, and a month later I'm still smiling everytime I get in the X to drive.

I purchased my Nissan X-Terra SE in 2005 brand new. I wanted BASIC reliable transportation and 4wheel drive. Live in the northeast. I have just under 40000 miles I've replaced the brakes all around once along with routine maintenance. The truck always starts always gets me where I have to go. Wish the gas mileage was better but I knew what I was getting when I made the purchase. The engine has loads of power and handle like a stable truck. This is not meant to be a fancy ride. Its a basic good honest truck, that's it.

I bought mine brand new in 2005. I now have 116,000 miles on the vehicle. I do a lot of driving. This is a fun car to drive on road and off road. I have taken it on many off road trails and it handles very well off road and will climb steep hills, drive through muddy roads, deep snow. Quality wise it's a good vehicle, I've had problems with the CD player, I'm on my 3rd one right now. I've had some squeaky belts replaced a few, this can be annoying with the car squeaking. The most expensive repair I've had is when the computer went out on the car and the car was out of warranty.
