Disappointment
I was pretty disappointed with my Xterra. If all you need is something to look cute driving around town, you'll enjoy the Xterra's rugged looks and relatively easy handling. Try and get it dirty however and you'll be disappointed. It slips easily in ice and snow (turning, even with 4WD is precarious), the mud factor wasn't great either, even in 4WD low. The interior is hard to keep clean, and the outside dents easily. Passing people on the highway is nearly impossible, even with the bigger engine option. And of course, fuel economy is horrendous with gas as much as it is now.
If only it was as good as its ads!
So far I am unimpressed with the XTerra. It should be a fully competent SUV but it isn't. In fact with only 3 inches of wet snowfall I couldn't even get out of my driveway without using 4wd low range. 1/3 of my driving is on Bradford County PA dirt roads (read partially improved cowpaths) which are often running mud except when thay are frozen mud. So far the Xterra has not matched the performance of either my 1999 Explorer XLT or my 1993 Explorer 2-door. I don't believe it will ever come up to the level of my 1971 Land Cruiser Wagon or my 1973 International Scout II.

Xterra Review
Rugged vehicle, cool styling, versatile. All around good vehicle for my needs but a few irritating things which could be improved (listed below). A big decision factor in buying it was anticipating high reliability. So far so good, but time will tell.

I'm Treva Darlene Eley Billiot born and raised in Biloxi, Ms. I'm an American Indian truly Proud and love my Xterra so much I'm doing my Art's&Craft's ((you can see on my Facebook page Treva Darlene Eley Billiot)) with my Design's&Official Decorations Buffalo, Feathers, and more to be seen in my Native self Proudly. And we're going in Ocean Springs April 27th every year as (1699 Reenactment) and truly seeing my Xterra's decorations and to have myself happy and we're touching up a few things and replaced the tires. But still very Proud to have my Xterra and hopefully with us so many more years and thankfully got it almost 5 years ago. 👍💘😍

I own a 2002 (same as 2004) and I really like it. The redone styling lured me in, but it has been it's reliabilty that compells me to write a positive review. This is not car. The ride is not harsh ... more bouncy. However it does just fine on the highway and great in sand dirt or rain. It stores a lot more stuff than you'd think and holds more than the lil SUVs like the CRV or RAV4. I prefer it's styling to the Ford Escape. The Ford has had a few reliablity problems. More tough looking and acting than a Mazda Tribute. Not the best gas milage ... I get about 20mpg. Recommended!
