Love this car!
Bought this car with 150k miles on it, has had a few minor issues but nothing abnormal for a car that's now pushing 165k miles. The car is extremely comfortable, I love driving it and the gas economy for a 1996 is AMAZING. The freeway MPG is phenomenal, however it dislikes stop and go in-town driving and traffic. Extremely reliable and the maintenance fees are pretty reasonable. I'd recommend this car to anyone, I can expect it to go 200k with ease.
Excellent,Reliable,Good price
I purchased 97 ES model from original owner with all records two years ago. Up to know, only change tires and oil change regularly. With almost 30-40% less money to get some 97 model of Camry or Accord. I would have only got 94 Honda CIVIC. Car is roomy & powerful comfortable, fancy woodgrain panel, nice stereo. It's very worthy used car if you can get from original owner who took good care of!
Galant GS
Great little car. Even after adding some bolt on power (turbo) the car was very reliable. This is until we hit 170000, then the engine had a few stumbles. At 175000 the engine said its about my time and the transmission soon followed. I am sure that had this drivetrain remained stock it would have easily hit the 250000 mark.
This car is better then my 91' Passat
Bought it @ 21k mi its at 50k mi now all i've done to it is was general maintenece and the ball joint recall it is ridding fine. It aint a Honda or a Toyota but it is a suitatble substitute if you practice general maintenence.... I wouldn't trust the newer versions based on their extensive recalls on the 1999's and 2000's apperenlty MITSU has cleaned up all of the mistakes in the 2002 model. But I dunno...
It's finally time to sell
I bought this car with 104K on it back in 01. Had it ever since. I now have 225K and it is finally time to get rid of it. The last 20K have had some problems with it, but what car wouldn't at that many miles. Paint has chipped off and some rusting around the wheel wells. Did most repairs myself. Good car for the price I paid. Drove it into the ground but it still gets 25mpg.
Big style, little substance.
I bought my 1996 Mitsubishi Galant as a college car. It had 83,400 miles on it when bought, now it is at 90,850 miles. I love the styling, inside and out. I love that it's easy to work on. I just love this car. I've done a great deal of work on it, and have mostly gotten it all working again. The engine is really smooth for a 4-cyl. with the A/C off, the interior has held up really well, all the problems the car had when I got it have been relatively easy to fix. It's a shame the parts are so expensive and the major components (engine, transmission) are so finicky about care and proper maintainence. I can provide great care to this car, and have. The previous owners didn't. It's a shame really. I plan to keep it for a long time! This is an awesome car!
Great Car
My Galant has over 100k miles and it still runs great. I've had no problems with this car. It is solid and reliable. I have the 5 speed std. It is quick and handles nicely in corners.
Great car!
So far this car has managed to cross several mountain ranges, a desert and near-arctic conditions, survived a five day road trip with cats, and gotten through some of the worst bumper-to-bumper traffic while commuting to work every day! Best car I have ever owned!
Such a great car
Didn't really want to buy a "foreign" car, but it's been the best decision I have made in a long time. Just regular maintenance, no irritating repairs. It is so dependable. Love the zip of the engine, love the heat in Minnesota and the cool in Arizona. Do they still make good cars like that? Yes, it does have a lot of plastic on the inside, but I did buy a "cheap" car not a Mercedes. I got my money's worth and more.
Love it
I bought it in Minnesota, loved it because it kept me warm, love it in AZ because it keeps me cool even in 100+ weather. I have spent minimum amount of monies on repairs/maintenance. Hope she last me another 30 years or more.
buy one if u can find one
Purch. New has been a good car, some repairs belt adjusters, 3 sets of brakes & rotors 3 sets of tires other reg stuff plugs, wires, 2 value cover gaskets, org muffler till on 128,000 runs like new no problems with ac etc
From day 1 with the Galant
This car has been ok, but when it was 5 years old the transmission had to be replaced. Also the interior integrity was very poor. The leather seats wore from sliding in the car, the stereo system whent out completely, plus the electric antenna stopped working and had to be replaced and it stopped working again. The outside seems to dent very easily. I have loads of dings and dents, just from parking in a parking lot. I feel a car should be more resistant to simple dings.
'97 Galant
This car is terrible. I had such a bad experience with this car, that I would NEVER consider buying a Mitsubishi again. We purchased it brand new when it first came out. Since then, we have changed our transmission three times. The first time was by an independent and it didn't turn out very well. So we decided the second time we would get it done at the dealer, which you would assume would be better. Unfortunately, that was not the case. As soon as our warranty ran out, our transmission died again. I tried to talk to the dealer, but it was no use. The third time we had it replaced by an independent mechanic again because there is no point in getting by the dealer if there's no reliability. This car has been very unreliable.
Sweet
With the 5 speed manual the car is very responsive. Can be a little uncomfortable on long hauls. For whatever reason we get water in the trunk when it rains and we are driving, not when it is just sitting, the seal is in good shape and I made adjustments to the lid but to no avail. The gas pedal can be uncomfortable, cruise control really helps in that aspect, we had one installed. The car performs better with higher octane gas, and in turn it gets better fuel mileage.
Great car
It's a great car, comfortable and quite fast for a mid-category family car, excellent for weekend trips and everyday use too. The interior could be more pretty, especially the color, but the interior is very well designed and practical. Surprisingly good sound system as it comes from the factory.
Check timming belt
I bought a galant in 1999 the 5spd w/sunroof. I wanted a family car with a soorty look so I was attracted to the Galant. It ran well causing little problems alternator, battery, brake pads, rotors, and lights. It had 124k on it when I got it. I heard a squealing sound one day and had the belts changed so I thought but they did not change the timming belt and by it being a 5spd it jumped timming and it was the end. I had just paid it off too.
Galants are great!
Since the purchase of my 1996 Mitsubishi Galant, I have had absolutely no major problems with it. I make sure it has its regular check- ups, and it has been good to me. My husband loves the power behind this vehicle. Looks are definitely deceiving! It's quiet, easy to maintain, and 'sporty'. I have been searching for a 'family' car, but haven't found one that can match my Galant. I would have to go greatly out of my price range to get something in comparison.
1996 Galant S
It has been very fun driving it and i cant wait to begin fixing it up.
galant
bad changed engine, radiator, crank pully, exaust, tires, all around 115,000 miles. really bad experiance. Also the overdrive is busted
The reasonable car
All I have to say about this car that it's the perfect combination of every use for you money. It is fast enough, comfortable enough, not too expensive to take care of, fun enough and still not too out of fashion.
Great Car
had 600 miles on it when i bought it. has almost 200,000 now. very few problems first 4-5 years - just brakes and oil changes. recently have more major repairs - engine, a/c, water pump - but repair costs have been reasonable. would recommend Mitsubishi to anyone. will buy another car within year but this has served me well.
my mitsubishi ...it's time to sell =0(
I bought this car with 105,000 miles on it. Everyone told me not too, it has been a wonderful car and is now pushing 180,000 miles! Great gas milage, quick for a 4-cylinder! Fun little car to drive with overdrive at the push of a button and power everything and leather seats and even a spolier on the back! I have to sell it now. If you buy one, I hope you have as much luck with yours as I have had.
What a great car!
I bought my Galant S (5 speed manual) in December 2001 with about 80k on it. So far I have put almost 25K. This car is by far the most reliable I have ever owned. Engine is strong, acceleration and braking are very good. Now on the down side... * The RPM indicator and some of the Dash lights (A/C knobs) have started working only part-time! * Water gets in the trunk every time it rains. But hey, for the money, the age and mileage of this vehicle, I am not complaining!
Old and Steady
This is second mitsubish. I owned. Minor problems on interior after 1st year, i.e. plastic parts not fitting. Internal air filter disentegrated after 5 years of ownership. Replaced brakes twice on front, battery 2x already and all tires once. Has high miles now and still works well, though a timing belt may be its next repair need. Tape deck and horn died last year as well as interior vanity light and trunk light. Love the Homelink system. Good maneuverability in tight places. Still can get over 80 mph quickly. Is squishy with one infant seat in center and another next to it. Good visibility- few blind spots. Still reliable car.
RELIABLE
The best thing about this car is its reliability. Overall I have been happy with since I've had it almost seven years and I feel as though it's been good to me. This is a pretty simple car that gets the job done and doesn't give you any problems, which is all I was looking for.
96 Galant
A great car! I have 125,000 miles and only expense is oil changes & tires.
What a car.
I'll tell ya this is my first car and it has given me no major problems. I got it around 70,000 miles, and it purrs. Only problem at 75,000 miles on cold winter night altenator belt snapped while on highway, got home safely battery was drained but only problem. Fast car has got some sack if you know what I mean. Handles amazingly.
1996 Galant S
It has been very fun driving it and i cant wait to begin fixing it up.
Good Basic Car
I own a '97 Galant DE and as compared to a '98 Accord I leased, it is an excellent and much less expensive replacement. It's lighter, and less refined than the Honda particularly in how it feels on the road and the interior design, but I have found it to be a bit quieter, and a better value when considering an Accord might cost 2X.
Loved it!
I got my Galant brand new in 1997. It now has @130K miles. I've had no major problems with it. Fun to drive because it has a great acceleration 'kick'. Just zips in and out of traffic or when passing on the highway. At first it used to jerk when first starting out on the road. I had to learn how to manage the gas pedal so it wouldn't do that. over the last year or so different things have had to be replaced, but I've had it for 15 yrs so I don't complain (plus a mechanic friend has done most of the work for me on the cheap). Time for me to get a SUV so sadly I'm having to sale it.
Better than ever
This car is under rated. Better than my last car which was a Camry. The Galant is really dependable and I love it.
Good car for price
I have had this car for 5 years and have been very happy with it. I have been looking at new cars for about 12 months... and it is just so hard to convince myself to have a car payment when my Galant just keeps going and going. I haven't had any major troubles with it. The transmission has always felt funny - like it was going to go - but never has. It is a good car and it has surprisingly quick acceleration on the highways (for a 97, 2.4L sedan).
Its a B.A.M! - Bummin' Around Mobile!
I got my 1997 Mitsubishi Galant cheap off of Ebay with 173,000 miles on it. I replaced several OEM parts and upgraded the wheels/tires. This car gets good gas mileage and allows me to keep wear/tear off the two family cars. Its 2.4L engine is torquey. I will upgrade the brakes / suspension next, then add a new air intake.
Very Uneven
Bought it used at 38,000 Excellent Performance, Good Handling, very Torquey engine. Good Brakes, Sharp Steering, but very over geared. At 75 on fifth, I find myself trying to upshift to a higher gear. Had to replace gearbox at 70000. and electic roof at 50,000. Admittedly I have put 82,000 in a little over 3 years. The same kind of milage I used to put in my 91 Camry which I had to kill after 230000 miles due ro rust. Would I buy another mitusbishi? Probabaly not. Would rather pay the premium for a Camry.
Great
Very efficient engine, sharp exterior, comfortable interior
Up to 185,000 before the final drive
This was my wife's first car, purchased in 2000 as a used car. It held up through Pittsburgh winters, though often with some sliding, and a parkway accident. It's now at 185,000 miles and was an excellent commuter car up until the last round of breaks and transmission repair needs. Very, very stylish and quality acceleration.
1996 galant
brakes are horrible
