1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse
I bought this car, as a replacement for my 2002 Mercury Cougar C2, and I think the eclipse was, by my standards, definitely an upgrade! First of, the exterior styling. The "2G" eclipse is definitely, the best looking generation IMO. I love the body lines, even the uneven hood. The interior is some what bland, but the curves of the dash and panels keep you entertained, although the interior pattern is ugly. Performance on this, for a 2.0l DOHC L4, is awesome! It beats hondas all day and Ive even run agains a Dodge Ram Hemi and won! Its has its flaws, such as questionable build quality on less important components, but over all its a great car with good fuel economy, thats really fun to drive!
A Good Car in my opinion
With this car I have enjoyed myself. I have had no major problems with the car like some of the other reviews. I have made some minor upgrades to the car....Euro tail lights,Short ram intake system, clear bumber leans, and a Hayame muffler.
Good If You Don't Want Your Kid to Speed
My car is beautiful, but has no personality. I treated her like a daughter. I washed and waxed her weekly or bi-weekly and maintained her on a regular basis. There has been no problems with the leaks that are usually found with this model. My only problem is I tend to have problems accelerating on the highway and going uphills. In the winter, the trunk has the grand ability to smack ya on the head. This is a beautiful car but it has low performance. The 420A inline 4 has amazing economy, it hits about 230-310 miles per full tank depending how you drive. To accelerate fast you need to turn the air/heat off to get full power to the engine.
Good car, only for gas mileage
this car has been a pain in my rear since i got it. I am going to school to be an automotive tech and i can tell you that this car breaks a lot and is hard to work on. the engine is crammed under the hood so there is no room to work. I've only had the car for about 2 months now and i really hate it. ive had to replace a belt, had a bearing go bad, i have an oil leak from somewhere, an anti freeze leak, my release bearing in the clutch is going bad, had an electrical short, and just other things that irritate me
1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse RS
So far I've had this car for a couple months and haven't had too many problems. I bought it used and it did have a few kinks. One was the radiator fan went out and it overheated in a parking lot and then a couple weeks latter a hose blew and was spraying coolant all over the inside of the engine. Other than that, I have had no problems allthough the head gasket looks new. Paid $4k and don't regret it at all.
Eclipse GSX
I bought this car from a lady I worked with. I bought it from her with 150,000 miles on it. I knew she was nice to it so I got it. I had a few minor issues with the car. The struts just went, the master cylinder just went and my truck opens sometimes. I don't mind because it is an old car. It is fast with the turbo at 9 PSI. I like the design of the exterior and the nice GSX rims. It has amazing handling and makes everyone look at it because of the nice design. Good car to mod if you plan on it. Has quick acceleration. Girls love it and I would for sure buy another one if they come out with another GSX version.
Piece of crap
I hate this car with all my life! As soon as I got it I loved it because it was my dream car but I soon started regretting throughout the years I've had it I had put in over 3 grand in the car it kept on breaking down on me all the time and finally my transmission went out on me and I kept up with my car too so it's over all a piece of crap.
Had mine for 6 years now.
I bought my GSX new back in 1998. I made some modifications over the years to the exhaust and intake. Strut tower braces front and rear help to cure the car's roll during high speed cornering. There are differences in the 4G63 engine from the 1G to the 2G, mainly the turbo and intake manifold. The GSX is the best model because of the AWD and 4G63 engine. The non turbo models have to deal with a Dodge Neon engine that is very troublesome. As with any car, follow the maintenance schedule religiously and you won't have a problem. I've used synthetic oil since it came home, and I've had no valve issues or oil squirter blockage that causes the 4G63 valve click.
Zippy Car!!
Wow, what a great car. . I've always wanted an Eclipse, so I went ahead and bought a 98 GS. Its a 5 speed, and I am having ALOT of fun. Sometimes I wish it had a little more power (140 hp isnt TOO bad)..However, this is one of the easier and popular import cars to modify/upgrade. I've seen some pretty wicked 95-99 eclipses with body kits and turbo's..all aftermarket stuff. My only gripes are the few minor repairs i've had to have done to it. The Check Engine light was on due to some wires gone bad, and a little corrosion. Overall, Im pretty happy about my purchase, and i look forward to having this car for years to come!
This car eats up gas
This car is beautiful, but non reliable had it for a month and the starter died, the battery died and did I mention it gets 12 mpg city and a decent 18 mpg highway the car is pretty fast though but I hate it when a neon srt-4 can beat me and get better gas mileage at the same time
The best car ever made!
I have had several cars in my days American and imports. And by far this is my favorite. I'm a Tech for VW so i know my cars very well. you can't beat an All Wheel Drive turbo car with a manual trans. it's so much fun, its so reliable and it's one of the nicest looking cars ever made. from the mean look of the front end to the wing (spoiler) in the back. it's so easy to squeeze out 350 hp or even more out of this car and cheap too. All in all i think this car is by far one of the best still out there 2008.
So far so good!
I bought my 98 eclipse GS 5 months ago w/32k on it and I am very happy with it. I have the full package w/ the auto tran and haven't had any problems with it. If you are considering one of these I would highly recomend it! However, some words of warning. First, the front end of this car is so low you may scrap it up on parking blocks, driveway etc. Second, if you want a manual be aware, some of these engines have whats called a walking crank. Its mostly in sticks w/the turbo but, this flaw can lead to a trashed engine (thats why mines has an auto tran) , be prepare to get it fixed. The g2 95-99 eclipse is relible and an excellent buy! they turn heads and are extremly fun!
My Greatfirst car
Tis is my first car and i love it. I wish it was a bit fast ,but of course that keeps me out of trouble!
Great car for teens
This was the car I was given on my 16th birthday, and I had only been driving three and a half months, when one day while driving home I stopped for a yellow light and thought the semi-truck behind me had enough room, it didn't I was rear-ended while the truck was going about 45 mph. Both my sister and I were fine with only minor aches and pains and if someone had been in the back seat of my car they would have been doing better. I would completely buy this car again.
not bad at all so far
I have had the car for about 7 months so far and have had one minor problem with it and that was with the check engine light. it was just a simple replacement of the gas cap. the car moves for a a heavy 4 cyc but i wish it had a little more pep (and i have the manual). since i've lowered it and added 18" rims and tires with a strut bar it handles WAY BETTER. I would would recommend this car. the car is definately a head turner.
Eclipse RS
This is the first and only car I have ever owned; we've been through a lot together. (It took a few years for me to finally stop scraping the front end, for example.) I was admittedly pretty hard on it the first year or 2, so the work done is even more remarkable considering that. I've had to get a new fuel pump, radiator hose, timing chain, and brake pads. It's still fun to drive although the pick up has declined, and it seems like some piece of plastic falls off the interior all the time. The paint job hasn't proven hardy, either, and rain occasionally leaks through the hatch opening. It's hard for older people to sit down, but once they do it's pretty comfortable.
sweet car!!
bought it with 15K, now have 40k, no problems (with regular maintenance). turbo needs to be taken care of, but nothing major. ride is choppy: you feel every bump. ride is also noisy, but not really noticeable. radio is directly in front of shifter: cant use it while in first gear
I love my car.. It's has been good to me
I got my car in October of 1997 as a birthday present. It is the 98 model. My car had 9 miles on it when it was purchased. It now has 112K. I have not had ANY major problems with my car. Yes, I did have to replace the harmonic balance about a year and a half ago but other than that I had no major problems. For those of you just starting out I must say you have a great car. The check engine light came on about 4 months ago and it turned out to be just a wire needing to be replaced. I have the 5 speed and it is so much fun to drive. I am now in the market for a SUV (more room) but I am keeping my Eclipse and will do so for many years to come.
Great Car
Got this Eclipse for 16th birthday...was look in at Integra but this car gets way more looks...this car is also more fun to drive handles well..for a heavy car...could use more acceleration power..so ive added a catback exhaust, and Aem cold air intake...and the Infinity System kicks
Gsx Power
This is a great car to own. With a stock quarter mile in the upper 14's this car is a performance monster. With better fuel economy then the big V8 american powerhouses and similar performance i would say this is the best bang for the buck. This also is in my opinion one of the best looking cars on the street.
Love it
Had no problems yet. My friend has a 97 spyder and loves it too. We are street racers and these are great cars to soop up. They turn lots of heads and even if you dont race...It is a great car.
GSX ONLY
I love everything about this car.. There are a few fixes that should be done, better bushings in the shifter. A bigger turbo for sure, also the tire size is a bit big Mybe a 17x7 in stead of 17x7.5.. Overall this is my first import and I'm hooked Thanks DSM.
Eclipse review
Nice car
Eclipse GST
This car is absolutely the biggest bag for the buck that you could get back in 1998. This car excelerates fast, corners well, and has nice smooth engine sounds.
Unreliable
This car has been the biggest waste of money ever! I haven't even had it for 2 years and have spent $4000 on repairs for it! I swear I have to take it in to the shop once a month because something is shuddering or making a funny noise. It's ridiculous. I will never own another Mitsubishi ever.
after 120,000 miles......
Other than wear and tear (brakes x1 each and new clutch at 100k), this car has been great! It is prettier than the one that replaced it; bought it new (gs was a little too much for me new) and have done NOTHING but Mobil 1 and drive it like mad! Still quick and fun, and I still smile when I look at it. Lots of wear and tear (door handle broke, cardboard thingy in trunk worn) because I have hauled everything from firewood to bookshelves to 2 mountain bikes in it. Its gone all over, Austin to Santa Fe, Big Bend, New Orleans. They need to work a little bit on locking trunk release, lift over hatch very high. But overall, a very great car, comparable to my Acuras. I am hard on cars; its held up
2nd Eclipse
This is my second Eclipse and I couldn't be happier. I drove an SUV in between the two, and I loved that car, but you can't beat the gas mileage of a 5 speed eclipse! I can't wait until the new ones come out this summer...
bad ass
this is my second one the first one i had was a 95 and i think there great cars the only problem is not enough of power but thats what the turbo kits are for
Eclipse - gone bad
With only 78000 miles and great care this car just cost me $2000 for head gasket and valve repair. The shop stated that the design was flawed and a known issue with Mitsubishi.
What a fun car!
This car has served me well through several yers of outside sales work. It is fun to drive; unique and sharp to look at; easy to get in and out of; sound system is awesome; low maintenance and the quality in workmanship is good.
Bought this new in 1998
GS-T..I bought this car new in 98 and have 62K miles on it. I have only changed the tires and battery. Replaced the filter with K&N and thats it. Very fast and great car to own. Drive to work every day at 90 to 100+MPH (early morning highway) for 6 years and engine does not complain. Top speed I have had it at 145. I have recently went to mobile one oil just to keep things trouble free. If you can get one that has not been beat on grab it!
mitsubishi 98 eclispse RS
good reliable car, keep the oil change going, spark plugs go out real fast when it gets old, turning angle is not good
Wow...you were owned
Let me tell you. After buying the car new what has impressed me most is the cost to maintain the vehicle. This was my first Mitsubishi, and after owning several Toyota products, what a welcome relief at the parts counter. This car is fast stock, but it's fun to add something new now and then to liven up the atmosphere out on the highway. 120k miles on the clock, and still strong.
Fun Race Car
I've owned this car less than a year, and after owning several imports... this is by far my fav. I've just started on the minor race mods getting it ready for SCCA Autocross next summer... The motor is a challenge to get out through the top but everything else has been fun to work on. The interior strips out with so much ease. Exhaust is easy to replace. I hear ppl say this car isnt fast w/o turbo but if u dont mind having a sucky street car, strip the interior, drop the power steering and a/c, add an intake, drop the car bout two inches, strut bars, and total straight pipe will help greatly (sounds and looks like crap after all this but runs great).
Turrrrrbo
great little car, other than planned maint. I have had no problems with this car.
Good car overall
I've had my maroon Eclipse GS for almost a year. I've had only minor problems with it. The check engine light came on which had to do with recalled spark plugs, etc. My door handle also broke off, which was kinda pricey, but oh well. I'm 21 so this is the perfect college car for me. It's great for the city, and has some pep on the highway. I only wish it had a little more hp and a larger engine, preferably a V6.
Mitsubishi Eclipse RS Hatchback
Car holds up great is front end crash. Does not require much maintainance, however, spark plugs are not reliable at all!
Fun factor < Maintenance headache
Great handling car. gets 23-26 city and 35 hwy mpg with the 4 cyl. decent acceleration for getting on the highway. The motor needed a new head gasket and milling at 81k miles. Too early in my opinion.
Great car
Very fast and responsive and grips the road phenomenally. Because of AWD, it turns like on a rail. Excellent in snow too. I compared to a WRX with great expectations, but this car has indistinguishable performance, plus leather, s/r and good looks. Almost no repairs in 5 plus years--the best of any car I've owned, which includes some great Euro sports sedans.
Fun to drive, great on gas, looks good!!
This is a really fun car to drive. Looks really nice and fun to modify. The engine has some kick after massaged a bit with intake and exhaust. The interior is great, has a cockpit like feel. The shelves...I mean seats in the back have very little practicality. Three passengers means you will be hugging the steering wheel. Decent trunk space for such a tiny car. Handles well but horrible in snow. Spectacular gas mileage especially on the highway. On my drive home from school I can go 250 miles on a little more than half tank. Have had couple problems here and there. Nothing too expensive to fix though. Overall a fun car to drive and looks great.
Poor Man's Porche 911 turbo!
When I bought this car it only had 18000 miles. Yes you read that right eighteen thousand. Glanzmann Subaru got the car from a company in PA that used it as a company car. The car is in excellent condition. Almost new! (The previous owner was a smoker, so that bothers me) no offense smokers. This car has everything, AWD, Turbo, Looks, 17inch rims, good for factory system, power everything. Though I'm not a sunroof fan. This car brings negative attention from the wanna be's though. Great car over all.
almost satisfied
Great car to own, well worth the investment. I have 45,000 miles on my 98' have experienced no major problems, and I don't baby my car either. I do drive it hard and fast, in excess of over 100mph at least 5 days a week, and a few miles at a time. I can honestly say it handles great at hi speeds in breaking and cornering. I've had only minor things go out: motor in power mirror while under warrenty, and drivers side door handle break twice also while under warrenty. I like my eclipse so much I want to trade it in for the 99' GSX - all wheel drive turbo virson which I wish I could have afforded in the begining.
Eclepse RS Hatchback
The car drives great. Watch for bumps though. Smooth steering, but a little trouble with quick acceleration. The car looks nice though. I've had it 2 days, I've already had over 10 people staring and 2 people stop completely, go in reverse and check it out. Great low priced car. Easy Stereo hook up, looks great with rims.2 Thumbs Up
Luv My Rocket Super Fun...
We Pd 700 bucks for it 3 years ago & did minor work tires, ect basic stuff & few weeks ago the clutch went so we replaced it a bit of a job but clutch is One Piece but we did it.U find oodles of parts on Net & not expensive & just bought an 05 V6 & I'd rather drive this one w over 150k miles & have 5 cars & I'd rather drive my rocket and Std trans ride is Fun,Fun...
Its Worth It!
This car gets outstanding mpg ( miles per gallon) for its year and Mitsubishi put in the awd 5spd turbo engine which lets the car punish the pavement. Also, because its a awd car, its a bit easier to drive during winter time because it gets better traction when all the wheels move instead of a 2wd car. This car is reliable, fast, sharp looking, and fuel efficient. This car has all the consumer needs and wants!!!
Piece of JUNK!!
Worst car I ever had. Will NEVER but Mitsubishi again. Broke down constantly!! I know two other people who got the same car around the same time as me and they had the same complaints. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE!!! Good thing it is a small car because there were numerous times I had to push it to side of the road!
