Fun but with faulty electronics and rattles galore

Aiden L, 09/25/2020

Second 2dr S I’ve had (other was a 2013). While the iconic package looks great, the electronics were quite faulty; I was unable to use Apple CarPlay for the first four months of ownership, and I’ve had a variety of issues with the speakers. In addition, there are so many things that rattle, likes the HUD, something in the dash, in the trunk area, etc. I wanted to be a Mini guy, but the poor quality vehicles (and even worse maintenance teams) make it very very difficult to consider. I’ve had the car 9 months, have driven less than 5k mi, and have taken it in for service more than five times already.

Fun & Sporty Meets Quirky Poor Build Quality

I like my Mini but have fallen out of love with it. The biggest complaint is that after a year, the car has multiple rattles, and they are horrendously annoying. At the price point, I would expect a car with higher quality materials and surfaces and more thought placed into useable space. Instead the car has many hard plastic surfaces, a totally useless center armrest that houses a wireless phone charger that is too small to fit most phones. The cup holders offer zero adjustment and are awkwardly placed. There is very little space to place things such as phone and sun glasses. is also Anything prior to MY 22 will also be missing basic options such as heated steering wheel and blindspot monitoring. I do mostly like my Mini. It is a blast to drive, but between the multiple intermittent rattles, missing options (for a top of the line model), and quirky interior, I think there are better options out there.

I had a 2006 for 12 years, loved it, and gave it to our daughter. I never thought I'd love the 2019 as much. OMG, it's TWICE the fun to drive, and the best car I've owned in 50 years of driving, including 3 old Porsches. The Cooper S coupe can be hot in sport mode, but still have more than enough acceleration in green mode.I got the manual because the driving experience is awesome ! I always take the long way home. .Looks great, moonwalk grey- easiest car to keep clean I've owned.

It took a little convincing that the Mini Cooper SE was worth giving a go but I am so pleased I did! This has so much zip in it you can’t help but smile when you are driving it. Stopping at lights, so many other drivers underestimate how quick off the mark it is! The range is not an issue as it charges so quickly and also lasts longer than it’s initial estimation. Even on highways this little beast seems to gain kms which goes against all logic. Such a fantastic car and I can’t wait to see what else Mini add to their lineup.

Should have kept my 2015 model

Recently upgraded my lease to the 2019 model in solaris orange. I regret the decision 100%. Acceleration is poor as the automatic gearbox struggle to work out which gear it should be in. In turn, this means there is significant turbo lag. On motorways this performance issue is obvious, especially when changing lanes. In city traffic, good luck accelerating out of a corner. Also gone in the 2019 model is the hidden dash storage above the glove box and the netting storage pouces on the sides of the footwells. I opted not to get the premium sound upgrade - a choice I regret. The audio quality is like that on a Versa or Rio with less speakers. A very sad Mini.

Small, sporty, and surprising

AJ Weino, 01/24/2024

The Great * Really quick and maneuverable. Go-Kart racing it is. * Visibility in all directions is great. Part of this is because the windshield frame is mostly vertical, so it doesn't block as much of the view as other cars. * Material is of high quality (it's a BMW), so it is very comfortable. I took a 4-hour drive and had no back fatigue at all. Plus, the seats hug you, again giving that rally-car feel. * Front seats can fit most people. Once MINI increased the size of the car from the traditional MINI, it could then fit people up to 6'3" or so. The Good * The range is better than advertised. We typically get 10-20% more range than expected, so we can get around 150 miles per full charge in the shoulder seasons, 130 miles in the summer, and 110 miles in the coldest weeks of winter. Given that this covers 90-95% of drives for most people, we almost always choose to drive this car instead of our gas sedan or our hybrid minivan. * It can actually fit 4 people. Yes, large adults won't be comfortable in the back, but they can fit in a pinch. The Bad * You can't reliably use this for long-range trips. Sure, if you are familiar with the route, you can plan ahead and charge along the way. But sometimes there aren't convenient chargers or, if there are, others are using it so you wait a half hour or even an hour to get your turn. This makes it much less convenient than an ICE car. I have done trips of 200 miles, but only when I was not pressed for time. * It's hard to get in and out of the back seat. In fact, if you are a medium-to-large adult, you pretty much have to exit the car backwards to get out. That said, we usually drive it solo or with another adult, both in the front seat, so this isn't a frequent problem. Again, we have a sedan and a minivan for larger groups. * For taller people who have to move the driver's seat back, the roof is relatively low, so it's hard to see stoplights that are relatively close.

Great little car - The cheapest BMW you can buy

A Fortner, 09/16/2022

I think this Mini Cooper JCW great car. It’s really it’s own thing, and doesn’t compare to other cars like the GTI/Golf R. It’s just different. I’ve owned both of those Volkswagens. They both had more power, but the power band was very narrow so that you had to constantly shift, and they couldn’t put the traction down. They also have this weird thing where they lift up in the front when you put the pedal down. It feels like the engine is trying to twist and come out of the bottom of the car. The Mini doesn’t do that. I previously owned a BMW M235i. It had well over 400 hp as modified. The Mini has a little more than half the power, but is more fun. The power in the BMW was not really usable. You were illegal in four seconds. Driving the Mini, sometimes I feel like I’m flying as I run through the gears and I look down to see I’m only doing 65 mph. Corners like crazy. Looks great. Easy to wash and maintain because of the size. The way I see it, this is the cheapest high-performance BMW you can buy.

My 4th MINI

I’ve owned a 2002 MINI Cooper S two door hardtop, a base convertible, an S convertible, and now my favorite, the 2023 SE. Is it perfect? Well… Could it be better? Well… Does it make me smile every time I drive it? YES! The good: I traded my GTI for this car, and it’s a bunch more fun to drive! All HP and torque is available RIGHT NOW when I want it to be, and even if the official 0-60 is 6.9 sec, I don’t believable a word of it. Maybe that’s because the 0-30 time feels so much faster than my GTI did. The handling is amazing since MINI chose terrific Hankook rubber, the center of gravity is low, and the battery only added a few hundred pounds compared to an S. I’m addicted. I know that looks and trim are subjective, but it all works great for me especially in BRG with the Chesterfield brown interior. I’m also happy that it was built in Oxford that has really upped the reliability game on ICE 2 door hardtops, and I hope that translates to this car. The 2024 SE will be built in China, so not sure if the quality will be the same. I also need an excellent sound system in my vehicle, and the 10 speaker HK in the Iconic trim delivers. The not-so-good: After more than a month and 500+ miles, I still haven’t completely figured out how to use the infotainment system. I guess I just need to fiddle with it for an hour or so to see what each menu and submenu offers and how to quickly navigate it all. The safety tech needs an upgrade, too. A Corolla shouldn’t beat a MINI for safety, even if the MINI is supposed to be able to park itself. The could-be-improved: More range, but not via a bigger battery. You’ll still need another vehicle for significant road trips. I would have opted for a ragtop if it were available. A button for “ludicrous speed” would be nice for special occasions. :-) 2/29/24 UPDATE: It’s been a little over a year since my BRG MINI SE was delivered to me, and I haven’t changed my mind about it after almost 5000 miles. It’s still a blast to drive, still looks great, has been trouble-free, and still makes me smile. I wasn’t surprised when it was named the #1 non-luxury EV in customer satisfaction for 2023 by JD Power earlier this month. The only EV rated higher was in the luxury category, the Rivian R1T. The MINI SE beat all the rest including other luxury models. Problems over the first year were minor. It would just quit charging a few times for no good reason, though I did learn that the doors need to be completely closed for it to charge. That led to me finding that the driver’s door didn’t shut as well as the passenger door which was fixed at my 1 year service. I still had it happen a couple times even with the doors closed tightly, but I was alerted by the MINI app and just had to turn the car on and off to reset everything. Then it started charging again without a problem. I was told by Orlando MINI service when they rotated my tires earlier this month that the Hankook Ventus S1 evo3 run flats will likely need to be replaced next year. That’s with only 5k so far of mostly city driving without putting it into Sport mode very often. They’re great tires - excellent grip in dry and wet conditions, fairly quiet, and give me a range of over 130-140 miles in Green mode - but treadwear rating is only 260. I might try the new Bridgestone Potenza Sport AS XL non-run flats when the time comes to replace them. They’re also $140 per tire less expensive. All in all, I’d buy the car again in a heartbeat. I hope the MY 2025+ next gen models built in China are up to the same standard. UPDATE: This is my last post about one of the best vehicles I have ever owned that still makes me smile every time I drive it. There were developments during my second year of ownership, though, that lead me to post one more time. Last summer I received a letter from MINI informing me about a major safety recall because apparently there were problems with the battery assembly process that led to a couple spontaneous fires, one in the US and one in Germany. MINI/BMW recalled all of the MINI SE’s manufactured from 2020-2024, and the initial “fix” was a software download that discharges the battery to 30% and shuts down the vehicle if a “fault” is detected in the battery. Not a real great solution IMO since it could leave you suddenly stranded in the middle of nowhere. Fortunately MINI also identified that the battery housing was the issue, not being sealed properly and allowing moisture to enter the electrical system. Fields MINI in Orlando took good care of me, and though it took 2 weeks to get the parts and tools needed, replacing the housing itself. The true fix has made me breathe a lot easier and not worry that my car might turn me into a crispy critter. And so I still love driving my car! So if you’re thinking of buying a used example of the MINI SE, please make sure that you get verification that the recall fix included repair of the housing and not just the software update. Fields MINI provided me documentation that I received the complete repair, and so should every other MINI SE owner. That’s the big update. Also as predicted my OEM Hankook tires were shot at 8k and I ended up replacing them with Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus rubber. So far I’m actually getting 0.1 mi/kWh MORE than on the OEM tires without a noticeable decline in performance or comfort. They also have a 50k warranty so I hope to get at least 25k out of this set. They’re not run-flats, but that’s why I have a AAA membership.

Purchased a 2024 Copper S, Resolute Edition on Labor Day…regretting it ever since! We have owned 5 Mini’s over the years and we’re always impressed with the solid driving experience. The newer Mini’s (F56) are just packed with a bunch of useless tech and gadgets that interfere with the driving experience. You have to develop a start up sequence to turn off several functions before you can even start driving. Here are my 3 biggest complaints: The transmission is awful, the worst automatic transmission I have driven, it is constantly searching for the right gear and never wants to downshift….the paddle shifters are only ornamental they really don’t shift the car…”absolutely terrible” The air-conditioning system could not keep up with the 100 degree temps at all. The tires are super loud, worse than my 4x4 off roading tires, wrong tire set-up for the car. The newer Mini’s have strayed away from being a drivers car and turned into a tech platform filled with a bunch of useless technology you’ll never use or need. Looks like Mini spent $35K on gadgets and $3K on the driving experience, it should have been the other way around. After owning the vehicles for less than a month it’s being sold, even at a loss just to get away from it!

Pros: amazing handling, very punchy engine, very comfortable front seats and driving position (and I’m 6’1”) wonderful sound system. I live in the NE and it does surprisingly well in the snow. Very catchy and unique styling, I always get compliments on its looks. I had a BMW 3 series and similarly this car feels tighter and drives better at highway speeds. Overall, I really love it! Cons: the ride is definitely firm, no blind spot sensors is unfortunate living and driving mostly in the city. A few instances of CarPlay getting randomly disconnected and it’s a process to reconnect. Wish fuel economy in the city was a bit better and finally that the steering was more firm. The weight of the steering doesn’t match the power coming from the JCW model which overall makes the driving experience at higher speeds not as confident and fun as it should be.

In a nice niche

If you want a city car or a commuter or just a second car for fun then the Mini Cooper SE might just be the niche electric car you are looking for. I got my ‘23 SE in October and it has met my expectations. I had an ‘09 Mini Cooper S for 7 years and can vouch for the SE being just as much fun to drive as the previous model was. The handling, comfort and solid feeling in the road are all accounted for. IMHO if you expect to use the back seats for hauling people you should be looking at a different vehicle. With the back seats folded down there is room for modest cargo such as golf clubs which fit quite easily thank you very much. Think of it as a two seater with far more space than actual two seaters and you’re cooking. My wife and I have two cars and honestly she doesn’t drive much. I plug the Mini every two or three days into the 240 line an electrician installed in my garage and it’s always good to go. The infotainment system is kinda clunky and old tech. The navigation system maps are so detailed as to be indecipherable. They also show where gas stations are on the route; not something you need in an electric car and there’s not much excuse for it in 2023. So you can use the Apple CarPlay if you have an iPhone but if are an Android guy or gal you are stuck with it. The car is fun to zip around in. Do you have to think about round trip distances and plan ahead? Sure! Do you have to use the other car sometimes? Yep! But for me it’s working out fine. It’s a niche car. If it suits you it’s reasonable price and fun factor is worth the inconvenience.

I really, REALLY loved my mini, and now have a BMW i3 electric car. I would have opted for the mini electric, except for one BIG problem. There are NO Mini dealers in my area, and NO local service centers. Since it is actually built by BMW they would do us all a HUGE favor and service Mini at the BMW service center. That being said I do love my BMW i3, it just doesn't get me in the heart like my mini did.

It’s a good car. We were buying to add a mommy-only car. Looked for cute, white, and cheap with a manual transmission. Fortunately we found one that had been on the lot for 7 months and it was nearing the end of the month. They offered, we countered, met near the middle: negotiating! We had financing and insurance already lined up outside the dealership. Good credit and budget planning helped too.

This car is one of the most enjoyable drives I have ever owned. I ordered mine in the Orange with Black roof, no sunroof (I have had issues with sunroofs with multiple brands before). I have the 17 inch all black wheels, the HK sound system and the electronics package that includes the upgraded Cruise control and the pseudo self parking (which i still havent used). The power to weight in this little car is fantastic and the power delivery is great. Minimal turbo lag, mostly from a dead stop. But if you are in sport mode it mostly disappears. In the economy mode while driving across the southwest I get 30+ MPG (I averaged 35 on one tanks headed from Las Vegas to Phoenix) while still driving 75+. But this little car excels in tight roads, the tighter the better. Taking turns at high speed with little body lean, maintaining neutral steering with little to no pushing when getting aggressive. It is a fantastic little car to drive aggressively. Regarding the number one complaint I have heard, I must disagree. It is a firmer ride, yes. But i have driven my 50+ year old body on 1900 mile trips with no issue. The seats support you very well. Maybe the 18 inch wheels are firmer, i do not know. But with the 17s and a little extra sidewalls and the wonderful seat, I have had no issues with back discomfort, as opposed to some other "more comfortable" cars I have owned. No, its not a touring sedan. But its more comfortable than anything else in its class that i have driven. And again, its power, especially when already moving, is very good. This is the single most enjoyable (fun!) driving car I have ever owned, which includes Audi A4s and BMW 3 series. Unless you are driving on extended washboard roads this little guy is far more comfortable and far more fun that you have any reason to expect.

1st time Mini Cooper S owner

I Just bought a 2019 F56, mini cooper S sunroof hardtop from Carmax. I’m so pleased with the performance and handling. It came fully loaded and the Apple Play was an added bonus I had not anticipated. The interior has so much leg room up front for someone who’s 6’1”. However, those back seats are roomy enough for two smaller people just not good for a four person road trip. The control console and back up camera are well placed in the dash area. And it has all the entertainment gadgets to keep up with your music. You can program your cell phone for hands free operation. It has decent room in the hatch area for groceries, books, laptops and small packages. It has enough space for golf clubs if I fold the rear seats down. I can confidently say that the Mini Cooper S is BMW’s hidden little Hot Rod. It has great power, light body construction makes you feel like your pushing more than the rated 187hp. And, with proper modifications this lil Rocket can easily reach 300hp if this owner chooses to tune it further. It currently has leatherette racing style seats which was a bonus. It has 17” wheels and tires, 4-wheel disc brakes, ABS, auto light sensors and it has a lowered stance, so I’m not sure if the previous owners install a lowered spring kit, but it has a little attitude when parked and drives like a slot car on Disney rails. All-n-all, I love this little car. And I’m discovering the cult following and its popularity especially in the UK that mini coopers have. I’ve given the Mini to my daughter to drive to college and to her work and she’s discovering how much fun the Mini Cooper S is to drive. The ease of parking in smaller spaces compared to her last vehicle, and it’s great on gas. I love this Mini Cooper S. I’m noticing how mini cooper owners are a community of car enthusiasts. And, you have to be a bit of a Rock Star (as my daughter is) to flaunt this mildly custom Mini, especially when she pulls into a parking lot of an event she’s attending or hosting and all her friends drive Teslas, Hondas, Acuras, BMW’s and Mercedes. I love it. And she loves it too.

2022 Cooper S in Green

Bought this vehicle used at a local dealer after 2 previous owners. Carfax was clean and can only surmise that the circumstances of the previous owners changed and the size of the car was too small on the inside. This is the 2 door hardtop version and yes it is very very small on the outside and inside. Back seat is unusable for adults due to no leg room with front seats in normal positions. Storage behind the rear seat is tiny and could hold maybe 2 carry on size bags if you travel. I love the performance of the car as it has the venerable 2.0L turbo four made by BMW that is found in many of their models. You can see BMW influence with electronic systems, infotainment and driving characteristics. The ride is firm but not punishing and the road noise is pretty well muted for such a small car. Overall my wife loves the car and gets many compliments on it.

Nice car, shame the warranty isn't honoured.

Bought an SE in July 21. It's a great commuter and is very fun to drive. Mine is mostly used for commuting. With an EVSE in my carport, charging is a breeze. Except when it randomly decides not to... There are probably few better cars for 10-60 mile daily commutes. I autocross mine. If I wasn't such a lousy driver, I suspect I would do well. The bad is warranty issues: Initial fault, loose shutter flaps. Despite this being a common fault, they very grudgingly reattached. At a few thousand miles, it randomly did not charge one morning, despite being set to do so. I didn't notice until I unplugged and got in. Got out, plugged it back in, it charges. Huh, weird. Next, I discovered a split driveshaft gaitor, at 6,000 miles. Wear and tear, Sir. That will be $2000 for us to fix. I left it. At about 8k, I noticed that the leatherette seat is cracking. I specifically picked leatherette after hating the dirt magnet cloth seats on my previous Mini. The leatherette was touted as very hard wearing. Wear and tear, sir! I had more no-charge glitches over the next 15,000 miles. Eventually, someone I loaned my car to discovered that when it randomly wouldn't charge, the 'fix' was to lock or unlock the doors. A couple more incidences after I started checking with the app if it had charged. Whatever I did to the evse, the car would not charge. The only fix was to unlock or lock it. Even swapping to the portable and still not charge, unless I locked them car. I booked it in for diagnosis. Because I did not have the original EVSE but merely compatible ones, they would not diagnose it. The EVSEhas no way to tell us the car is locked or unlocked. 22,000 miles, the seat looks like it will split soon. I had originally planned to trade this one in for a J01 when they finally got here, but I'll never buy a new Mini again thanks to the dismal warranty. I bought my car with cash, so you would have thought Mini would be interested in keeping me happy. My car has accumulated multiple expensive faults that I really feel should have been covered under warranty. If Mini had fixed issues, this would be a 4 star review.

Excellent car. Does what I want when I want extremely well. I have a 2017 S and a 2020 JCW. So far just keeping up with maintenance keeps the car in excellent shape. No problems.

I am loving this new car. Mine has a white top and mirrors over British Racing Green metallic paint with the standard black synthetic interior and scissor style wheels. It looks very sharp and lives up to its reputation as a BMW .5 series as it is both sporty and comfortable. And plenty fast enough for me. I was a bit worried about a rattle in the B pillar by the driver's head, but that turned out to be frameless window seals just needed some conditioner, a 30 second job to be done about twice a year. The car is tight and quiet now. I bought an aftermarket metal surround for the remote control that allowed me to ditch the silly huge round thing. The remote is now heavier, feels higher quality and isn't so huge and silly looking. Pros: Sporty comfortable ride suitable for backroad shenanigans and interstate cruising; Excellent 7 speed automatic transmission w/ great manual/sport function; Effective and reliable iDrive tech and nav interface; Excellent voice command functions; Reliable and no rattles; Excellent headlights; Big fat soft heated Nappa leather steering wheel that is a joy to use; Awesomely comfortable standard S model seats with tons of adjustability; Huge panoramic roof; Lots of content for what is a reasonable price in today's market; Great MPG. Cons: Relatively narrow powerband; Some road/wind noise at highway speeds; It's really a 2 seater with lots of cargo space; Silly shaped remote control.

It is a smooth sporty zippy vehicle. Yet you can also relax and coast with the sunroof open too. I love it. The best of both world in one beautiful package that is unique. Great on gas, and the technology is awesome in the vehicle.

I bought mine new and have had problems with the car with low mileage. I will say about BMW that they have handled it very well . They have really stood behind their product.

I ordered this after driving a Mini Cooper S for 3 years which I loved. This one has a manual and is quite an upgrade from the S. Better brakes, suspension, handling, more power, and as my daughter so eloquently described it the ride is less awful than my S. (Ride quality is not Mini’s strong suit but it’s part of the go-kart feeling). Like the S the main complaint is that it even has two non sport modes. Like who ever uses them. Also I could do without the “enhanced” sound you get in sport mode.
