Excellent car

My dad bought this car for my mom when she was pregnant with me. This was 17 years ago, in Anchorage Alaska. The car spent 14 years in Alaska brutal weather. Now here in Georgia, I drive this car, as a teen I'm hard on it. The interior is still awesome, very comfortable. The exterior paint is still glossy and smooth. This car has never stopped working. I just took it in to the shop and had some maintenance (age and weather took its tool on the tranny gaskets and the spark plug wires and stuff) and the car showed no signs of stopping before the job was done. Now that the stuff is replaced, I can expect another 3-5 years out of it. Awesome car. Well built. Never fails. It's safe feeling as well

I hate my car

when I initially bought the vehicle I was skeptical. Not because of anything I heard but because it was a grandpa- mobile. 3 transmissions, a full set of struts, new front wheel bearings, a head gasket, water pump, an oil pan and $3000 later it is a wonderful car.

Reliability for me = Hi Miles - Repairs

Very pleased with this car's performance. Has 176K on it. Got my money's worth!! Engine and transmission still running. Transmission shifts poorly between 2nd and 3rd. Mainly have to replace rear shocks every 50K, pads/brakes (easy to change), Water pump failed at 125K, overheated car and had to remachine heads/ head gasket. Body starting to accelerate rust spots. Can't kill this car. Going for 200K. Would buy another one without much problem except not too excited about aethetic design change in '94-98.

Bought the car used with less than 50K miles. Almost immediately, had to replace the transmission. Spent $1,000 - 1,500 every year on repairs. Yesterday, with a blown head gasket, sold the car for junk.

I like the looks of my car. It is now 2003 and my car looks as good as any on the road. I have looked at new cars and none of them compare with the features on my 1992. Throughout the years it has been mainly trouble-free. The gas mileage is terrific. I do a lot of highway driving and because of the digital instrument panel I can see immediately that I can get 32 mpg.

Bought this car w/ 20K miles. Now has 140K. I've had a much better experience than some postings here. It has been very reliable other than normal maintenance and minor repairs you would expect with a car this age. Still has original transmission, A/C. Body and paint still in great shape. Very comfortable ride.

Our family inherited this vehicle from my great-grandmother when she passed away. Ever since, the car has been very reliable and we have had very few problems with it since. The car drives excellent and is very reliable. In it's entire history, it has needed the fuel pump and tie rods replaced once, also the muffler needed to be replaced a total of two times. It's a little thirsty for gas but it drives well and is very dependable, especially during the winter months. I would definitely recommend this vehicle to anyone who is searching for a great older car.

Worst mechanical car ever owned

This car at 72000 miles has a knock and Ford tells me it needs a new engine. This is in spite of conservative driving and regular oil changes as required. Every other car I've had has exceeded 100,000 miles and 10 years. This is after having the head gasket blow at 52,000 miles (Same story as Jim22) and Ford refused to give any coverage under warranty. I will never buy another Ford. Very disappointed and angry at such irresponsible action and lack of owing up to their mistakes.

I purchased my Sable with only 48000 miles on it. It now has over 130000 on the odometer. I used to drive 100 miles a day. After about 4 thousand dollars in repairs it runs and drives like new. New Trans., re-built engine, new suspension, new front end equipment. You name it, I replaced it.

I've had this car for 9 years now and it has 253K miles on and still running. I have had many repairs within the last year dealing with engine, brakes, and some electrical, but my only problem now is a loud muffler! I feel very safe in this car in the snow and because of it's size. Looking for a new car now and need to find something that can live up to the long life of this car! Great car!

Only problem seems to be the head gaskets on the 3.8 need replacing at about 85,000 miles, as this happened to me on another 3.8 I own. (The other 3.8 has 142,000 miles!) I've got 182,000 on this car, with original transmission and transmission. Interior has stood up very well. Original starter finally went at 160,000! It's been a dependable car!

Having owned a '86 Taurus, I appreciate the FoMoCo mid-size comfort, performance and value. When I bought this Sable GS, it had several small problems, but they were ALL described in Technical Service Bulletins (ALLDATA). The front struts made a popping noise at slow speed (solved by spacers); the car thunked on acceleration (solved by new front motor mount); the paint is faded on horizontal surfaces (sand & repaint); and igniton key sticks (ignored it). Once repaired, this car runs smoothly, engine and transmission are fine, all other itmes work well. Solid, safe, dependable car at an exceptional value. I anticipate another 100k plus miles.

In the 10 years we've had this Sable (3.0 L engine) it's been very reliable and needed very few repairs (new radiator and ignition switch is about it, besides the normal brakes, oil changes ,etc.) Runs very smoothly and is a pleasure to drive.

Underrated

My ‘92 Sable GS has the 3.8 Liter engine with the original head gasket and 90,000 miles on it. With good maintenance this car will last to at least 200,000 miles especially when old lady owned and old man care keep it going the last 15 years. Recently the hoses and brakes were replaced (age issues). It has a huge trunk that came in handy when I moved earlier this summer. This car has had a lot of negative reviews and I can’t see that they are driving the same car. Don’t abuse this car and it will last.

I purchased the car to as a work car to do Marine Fiberglass work in 2003, as an alternative to a Chrysler Minivan. It doesn't have the room of the minivan, but the car gets better mileage and doesn't look like a soccer car. The car had 85k on it when purchased. It now has 132k. It had ALL of its original parts and it came with the 3.0 litre engine. There haven't been any problems with the engine except a water pump and the bearing on the A/C going bad. Otherwise it's been very dependable. The only other major draw backs are: the transmission (it now needs to be repaired), and the brakes (two sets of rear rotors, one set of new calipers). Otherwise, it's been a great car.

I've only had this car for 4 years and have spent enough money on repairs to purchase another newer used car. I'm only at 66K and already am on the 3rd transmission, have new brakes, new water pump, new radiator, new head gasket. Plus I've had electrical problems with the original stereo system so I've replaced that to.

Smooth and crisp response, the Mercury Sable is the car for you. Like lemonade on a hot, sunny day, you'll enjoy the cool pleasure of running your fingers over the dash and feeling refreshed. Hey, this car is about 10 years old now. Maybe you should save your money and buy something a little bit newer, eh?

Reliable, affordable to fix, comfortable, good in

I bought the car in 2011 with 37,000 miles on it. It was easy to maintain, reliable and comfortable. I had to change starter twice (the aftermarket ones turned out to not be very reliable), struts in the front, radiator, brake lines for the rear brakes I believe. Considering I bought it for $1600, it was 20 years old, and all these repairs didn't cost much, it was a great first car. Other than that - regular oil changes and brake pads. I sold it with 100,000 to an older man, who owned one like this before and new how to take care of it.

Disappointed

I bought the car new at the end of 1991. Had several repairs, small and big right from the very beginning; spent a lot of money for these repairs. I take excellent care of the car; it is garaged. Very little cooperation from FORD, complaints were disregarded. I spoke with other owners of this 1992 model and about 7 out of 10 had similar problems. Even the manager of the Ford dealership told me his father has the same car and it is a LEMON. Now, I broke the glass of the front mirror, my fault, and they want $ 400.00 for a replacement! I am glad I found this site to vent my aggravation. I am driving for over 50 years, always using American cars, but my next car will be different.

3.8 Litre Fiasco

This car unfortunately falls in the category of Ford's strategy of not standing behind their products by admitting poor quality and fixing it. The 3.8 L engine blew a head gasket at 62000 miles. Although Ford had admitted problems with the engine in later models,. (1994 & 95) they have refused to admit the same problem in earlier models. Document cases of head gasket failure abound. The lesson to be learned here is never purchase a used Ford product of the early to mid ninety vintage with the 3.8 L engine.

Heap of Junk

The worst car I have ever owned, or known anyone else to have ever owned. Though the car was maintained as per the owner's manual, it required a complete engine replacement at 62,000 miles. At 68,000 miles, it required a new transmission, as it did again at 78,000 miles. The brakes wore typically after only 20,000 miles. Oh, and the A/C broke at 70,000 miles. My car is low milage only because it spent so much time in the shop.

This car was ok most of the time until 110K. Afterwards, the motor mount broke and all these problems came up. Oh, and the Sable tends to have a major problem with A/C because we fixed our A/C hose once at 65K and then at 100K the A/c stops functioning for no good reason whatsoever.
