Great lil' car!

When my grandfather passed away a few years ago, i inherited this cut little car. He wasn't big into paying attention to it's needs and was always a cheapskate, so some things aren't in the best shape, but it still going good! I have been trying to restore it to all its original splendor, but its rather pricey to do in high school... This car had kind of a ruuf life, so it doesn't have as much power as it used to, but it gets goin' when you aren't payin attention. haha, great little car!

First of all, the car is wired for every option that was available, including fog/driving lights. the plug for the relay for them is located in a body cubby to the drivers side of the windshield motor, you'll need the relay. The window switches are serviceable (the contacts can be cleaned) as well as the headlight motor transmission contacts. Get the headlights in the up position (you may have to manually rotate the headlight motor. Remove the plastic shroud from around the headlight to gain access to the nut that attaches the mechanism to the headlight motor transmission. Now remove (most nut and bolt seizes are #10 and 8) the motor. Now remove the five or six tiny bolts of the motor transmission cover. Once inside! You'll see contacts, lightly sand these as well as the disc they ride on. Reinstall the headlight motor transmission cover as you found it, reinstall the motor assembly. Carefully reinstall the headlight mechanism to the motor transmission spline aligning it so that the headlight is at the correct elevation. Replace the plastic headlight shroud, test the unit and your done. The main relay can be had at the junk yard from an early Mazda 323 or 626 for around $15 bucks (pickup a couple just in case) not $153.00 dollars new. The main relay is hidden behind the fluid bottle attached to the left front fender. I have owned this car for seven years. I added RX2 anti-sway bars, driving lights, hardtop, '94 premium stereo, coin and cup holder, even the rear defog switch for the hardtop, as well as the switch for the fog lights. New soft top next week. I had the automatic transmission rebuilt last year. The car has just a 115k miles on it. It's in good shape with the usual parking lot door dings. The interior is fair, intact, but fragile. I have a new one, in the box. The car rides way better than a Miata. It is comfortable on long trips, a Miata rides like a buckboard and doesn't have a back seat. My only real complaint is the process of putting the top up or down. By the way, never pull the top to the windshield with the latch handle as it WILL break. This is gospel. A used one is $35-$45 bucks. Don't let anyone help you put the top up unless they clearly understand this fact.

I love this car but the only problem is, is that there isn't a place that i can buy cheap parts for it. Ebay is overpriced and autopart stores don't sell most parts. so if you know where i can find a cheap driver side window regulator, let me know. Cause its bugging me not being able to roll down my window.

1991 Mercury Capri XR2 Turbo 2dr Convertible
8 of 8 people found this review helpful

1991 mercury capri xr2 turbo is a fast great car to drive, they are reliable to a very high mileage like import cars and still have plenty of power, we have owned both the standard and turbo models and have never had a problem out of them , the turbo model is much faster and burns more gas but is alot more fun to drive, not that the standard is no fun , because it is, I would reccomend these cars to anyone who wants an inexpensive yet fast convertable, that is definitely not a common car you see everyday. the XR2 is a very rare model and if you see one for sale. I would reccomend buying it immediately as it will always bring your money back to you if you sell it, unlike most other usa cars.

I bought the Capri in 10-99 with 104k miles on it. It now has over 156K miles. I have had so much fun with putting the top down and just driving. It has started to nickel and dime me. It needed a new clutch at 153k and a new catalytic converter. The rear wheel bearings went out at 149k and it wasn't done right so it needs to be replaced again. I enjoy the top down and for only $1500.00 it is a great car. The engine and transmission are from the Mazda 323 so it has been reliable.

3 years ago I bought a blue 1992 XR2, just like the picture. It was really about the mileage since our other cars were 2 Ford Expeditions which only got 9 mpg on a good day. Well what a surprise that little car turned out to be. Although it had 78,000 miles on the odometer, it still started and ran like a top. The 5 speed tranny is still tight and the acceleration after driving that land barge was nothing short of breathtaking. I swapped out the old 15" wheels for some new "A.R" 16" wheels and put on  some 225X 60 series tires and what a difference. The thing just hugs the road in a bear grip and will not let go even though I really push it.I found a hard top and its all set.

I paid more than the blue book value for this car, have done almost $2,500 in repairs and maintenance, but do NOT regret it all. It drives great, handles well with alot of zip! The Turbo has great performance and I still get 30-36 mpg on this doll. I painted her red of course, and it turns heads. There were only a few of these made and I enjoy having one of the better ones now and I didn't have to go into big debt for a cute, sporty, rare classic!

Amazing - I bought this car in '91 - that makes it 14 years old! Repairs? None! I changed the oil every 3,000 miles, and that was it. This car is so much fun to drive. I drove it through Bryce Canyon with the top down for an unforgetable experience. Too bad they don't make them anymore. I would buy it again.

I owned my Capri for 11 years and really loved it's manueverability, comfort for a small car, and just plain fun. It had very little mechanical failure except that the automatic transmission is poor quality and even after repair was a poor performer. The front seating area can handle long legs, but not tall heads, and even though the back seat is small, tall people can sit in there when the top is down, and the trip is short. Body work is pretty spendy! The heater and air conditioner worked extremely well until the last few years The Capri has been a most enjoyable little car, especially for the initial price.

We have owned this car for almost 11 years. The quality has been superb. No major repairs and minor maintenance. The only problem has been finding the small cosmetic parts. Engine parts have been no problem through the dealer. Definitely a keeper. Still looks and runs like new.

Not all Capris are junk, but be careful. If this car were as mechanically reliable as it was good- looking, I'd probably still have it. My Capri burned out every exterior light bulb except one fog light. Both CV Boots failed within 4 months of each other. Nobody could figure out why the engine pinged under load, and I always used premium.

I bought my capri in Feb. of 99, this car was in such poor shape though it had only 64,000mi I took that car and fixed it up nice. The main complaint that I have for these cars is that the parts are hard to find and are expensive. Though in the four years that I have owned this vihicle it has open many doors into the auto tech industry, I use the car as a example of the work that I do and now the car has 115,500 miles on it and runs like new, but still needs some repairs such as tie rod ends and lower control arm bushings.

Wow! I've loved every minute of owning this great little red car. Perfect for local runabout--has always been reliable and trouble free, and loads of fun to drive. Sorry to part with this old friend, but with all the SUVs and trucks on the road, I am not as confident in myself as I used to be. It's time for someone else to enjoy this wonderful auto.

My wife and I purchased the vehicle new in 1992. She often drove it to work and once we drove the vehicle as far as N. Carolina for a brief vacation. We never had a major problem with the vehicle. We had minor problem with the convertible top which in the down position, caused a small tear on each side of the top where the metal rubbed against the convertible top. Still runs and looks great.

Zippy Lil Drop Top

Inherited my XR2 from Dad. He bought it new in '91 upon retirement. Less than 12K! He recently replaced the top. Drivers headlight doesn't pop-up, door locks questionable and interior QC sorely lacking. Otherwise, great shape. Fun to drive; but considerable turbo lag and FW drive, so it really oversteers! Wider, stickier tires and strut brace will help. Nice looking w/ top down but dorky tiny wheels/skinny tires. Looking for 15" 7 spoke rims from '94s. I've a '94 Mazda RX7. THAT's a real sportscar! XR2's more a sporty econobox with soft top. Surprisingly comfortable, roomy and good ride. Easy drop top. Large trunk for a small car. Awesome gas mileage at 30+ highway. Spongy brakes.

I bought the 92 base model in may of 2010 for $800 with only 78k miles. good shape inside and out and the engine clean as a engine can be. the top was bad but found one on ebay really cheap so it looks good. I've put over 23k miles on the car in less then a year and only thing I had to do was replace the fuel pump but it was my fault it went out. and a wheel bearing. for only 100hp the tranny is geared out to have decent pick up for it. really smooth running 70mph on I95 with the top down you can bearly tell your in a convertible.

For the batchlor whos made it, this is it. Ok, so its not a DeLorean or anything, but its quite a car nothertheless. I bought this car 2 1/2 years ago and the only thing that has broken down on it was the distributor on the first day of high school (Senior year). That sucked! But when it comes to handeling its awesome. Parts are expensive, and I agree MOST capris are troublesome in mechanical work. Although my auto is great, my advice is to get a manual, or better yet, a turbo. I cant wait to buy my second Capri, I love this car!

I love my car dearly. Other than a headlight that has stripped its gears, a common problem with Mercury Capri convertibles of this style, and other than there being poor interior lights, it is fantastic for me (but not for my very tall late husband). At this time I have too many cars, but I refuse to sell this one.

Luckily I found this car with 39,000 original miles. The turbo gives amazing passing power for a 4 cyl. engine, there's not much accelaration in first or second gear, but third gear blows the doors off of other small, sporty cars. The gas mileage is 32+. I've painted it bright red, done some minor mechanical repairs, plan on new interior cloth this season and painting the wheels chrome. This doll always turns heads and I get a lot of questions about the car. This is my third sports car and I really love this one!! Will keep and repair until can be passed down to the grandson who also loves it.

This am I was looking at cars and put in Capri. I found the exact duplicate. I am walking out the door with cash in hand. Does that say it all?

I bought it in 5/01 with 80k on it, I have spent $700 on repairs every 4 months since. The car has been a headache since day1. Here is a list of parts I have replaced on the car: Entire exhaust up to cat., 2 brake rotors, alternator and belts, water pump, radiator, driver side window regulator, thermostat and the sensor. Just yesterday the automatic transmission stopped functioning. I am going to junk the car and look for a more reliable car, or at least a car that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to fix. Mostly every part it seems like has to be special ordered and or custom installed.

I can't complain at all!! Friends of mine was moving last fall and they had this car sitting out on their field, said it wasn't working. And asked I wanted to have it?! A question answered with a YES! Turned out it was a simple fuse. Definitely a head turner due to the fact few people knows about this car. Still all original, NO RUST!, and with a top not leaking! New tires is on it's way! Arctic White with blue/red stripes. A perfect summer car. Average mpg (doing longdistance driving: 38mpg!)

I loved my capri. If I ever win the lottery, I will definately buy another one. However, one would have to win the lottery to afford the up keep. I only had mine for 3 years, but the value dropped signifigantly, and it spent more time in the shop for the tranns mission than I did driving it. On top of it it was so limited that the parts are hard to find....But i sure do miss all the good times!

Great convertible for people on a budget. When some things did go wrong, mitsubishi parts can be substituted for certain things and those parts I found to be very cheap. Bought it to see if I would really use a convertible. I did and I loved it. Still have it to run around in, but bought a newer Sebring for more room and sharper styling.
