They've Come A Long Way
This is my second SL in 7 years and boy have they changed. The car is absolutely gorgeous and has all of the key luxury items that one would want. Aside from the sports package add on I did no options. Still the features, comfort, and styling are overwhelming. It's an excellent and awesome car.
Get it
the only problem I have found is with the breaks that they have promissed they will fix and the navigation needs improvement. But at least it works; unlike BMW 745 with a great NAV that does not work 1/2 the time.

Expected problems, and I wasn't dissapointed
I bought a 2004 SL500 spring of 2022. I have had Mercedes SL's in the past and always said I would get another one. I am a good mechanic with the ability to rebuild an engine or transmission if required. One thing that goes without saying, if you can't repair a Mercedes yourself it will be one of the most expensive cars you ever owned. I looked for several months and found a silver SL500 that had a perfect exterior even with 90.000 miles. The car drove great, but when I asked if we could lower the top I got the first bad news that I was expecting. We had to add oil to the pump to lower the top. Most people would have walked away at this point. Anyone who knows SL's with 90k miles knows if thhe hydraulic cylinders for the top haven't failed, they are about too. In my mind I just took $1500 of the asking price. My next questrion was about the shocks, this car had already been converted to coilovers. The owner had installed Silvers with upgraded springs. The car actually handled very well, annd the upgrade was a top notch installation. I bought the car for $8500 and immediately replaced all but the two main hydraulic lift cylinders. I used Top Hydraulics out of Oregon for the cylinders. Anyone that is considering changing the cylinders I cannot recommend a better company than Top Hydraulics. Klaus the owner is a gold mine of information and is glad to give tech support. Nobody wants an SL with the top not working. I did this job myself and unless you are fairly savy mechanically you may not want to take on this repair. My top has worked without a hitch for over a year. Despite a few other repairs which I bought used parts on ebay the car has been great. To be almost twenty years old it still turns heads. It driives, and handles great. People can say what they want. To be twenty years old and still looks brand new isn't a sign of poor workmanship. Sure there is problems what twenty year old car doesn't have them. With any SL there is quite a bit than can go wrong. When they were new they were packed full of cutting edge tecnology. Anybody thinking about buying one should count on buying an Autel diagnostic computer that has Mercedes vehicles on it. There is nothing you can work on this car without one. The car has a small computer that talks to a bigger computer for every single thing the car does. Two batteries as if one isn't problem enough. You attach jumper cables to this car incorrectly you have just had a bad day. I have driven home to point I hope that a SL is a possible money pitt. If the repairs are something you are able to do then an SL500 in good shape can be bought cheap. I wouldn't have any other car. They are beautiful, elegant , and will still be in ten more years. You will never have a more badass car for $8500 dollars, plus the $3000 you will have to put in it. I have been totally satisfied. I have never thought I made a mistake.

Heaven on earth
I am 6'6" tall and always wanted a convertible but could never fit. The SL 500 gives me plenty of room. It took a long time for dealers to realize that tall people love convertables, but it was worth the wait.
Car of My Dreams
This is the car of my dreams. Purchased it in September - it has been a blast to drive. Everything has worked great - no problems. The engineering is awesome!
