So much potential in such a little car

I bought this car used several years ago, and it was about 10 years old at the time. Despite recommendations from friends and family to avoid a decade old German vehicle, I was drawn to the style and the way it felt when I test drove it. While certainly far from the most rare or exotic Mercedes-Benz, the car still offered a certain pizzazz the car I was driving (a fox-body Mustang) just didn't have. Mechanically, the car has been as sound as any 16 year old car can be. The headliner needed to be replaced a year or so after purchase, as did a crank position sensor and the hoods struts. Earlier this year, the driver's seat position motor also needed replaced. Otherwise, I dare say the car has been almost bulletproof. I'm not proud to say I've driven the car in exceedingly adverse conditions, including heavy flooding and sleet when I had no business being on the road. Each time the car delivered me to my destination safely. I've driven it from my home in Texas to California, Georgia and even Baja California in Mexico. Its been my commuter, grocery getter, and I've taken it to the home repair store for lumber or insulation more times than you'd think. Really, my only gripe is that I wish they spend the same attention to style, detail and build quality on the interior as they obviously did the rest of the vehicle. The grey on grey interior in my car is sort of bland, and my car came with a tape player only. When buying a Mercedes, you'd think they wouldn't nickle and dime you for a CD player. The seats are also a little firm, but most people probably won't notice because they won't drive it 11 or 12 hours at a time the way I have driven mine. I have almost 140,000 miles on my car and plan to keep it for years to come. After all, being 90% of brilliant is still being pretty darn good!

An extremely fun, forgiving car. Definitely enjoy taking this car on back-roads using the tip-tronic transmission. as expected a lot of maintenance involved in owning a Mercedes.

This is my second Mercedes-Benz and just like my other car it's been a solid, reliable and fun car to drive! I will be honest the maintenance on these cars can be a little pricey if you take it somewhere to have it serviced. I work on my own cars so never had to deal with that. Once you fix the small defects on this car it's a very solid reliable ride. The 3.2L V6 engine is no slouch! It's got plenty of power and picks up speed very quickly. Currently the car has 156,000 miles and it's been running very well! Only things I've had to replace was the fuel pump and the crank position sensor. Both very inexpensive if you order them online. Everything else on this car I've replaced as they wear out. RockAuto and Ebay are the best places to get after market parts for these cars very inexpensively.

I've owned this car for 5 years. I bought it used at a BMW dealer in St. Louis, MO. I have enjoyed this car and would consider buying another in the future. It has a solid feel that I have never matched with any other car. I have the Sport package. It handles superbly. I have kept a warranty the whole 5 years. I'm glad I did. It has needed some repairs. The Japanese brands don't quite come up to the ride standard of this car. If you drive one, you will want one.

There is a reason that Mercedes-Benz has a reputation for being one of the most luxurious and prestigious cars built today. Even the C-class boasts so many features, you won't believe it's the lowest class they manufacture. I never mind being stuck in traffic anymore when I'm in my C240. It just becomes a part of you-- an extension of your own body! The performance is outstanding, and you won't feel safer in any other car.

The 2001 C240 is a solid ride. Looks good,is safe, but not dependable! I am at the delearship every other month. Everyone there knows me by name. Where do I begin? Locking problems with the keys, then locking problems with the cpu. The leather de-laminated from both doors. fuel pump had to be replaced at 42000 miles. rear brake lights not working, defective SAM card. Front directional not working, defective SAM card. finally car will not start when engine is warm, the timing chain-cam sensor is defective! Most repairs were not under warranty, and averaged 800 dollars per event.

The car LOOKS great on the inside & outside, but other than that it's the worst purchase ever. I've never had so many issues from a car than this one. This was my first & last MB purchase. The issues I've had: taillights constantly go out, seats don't move anymore, ac/heather no longer work, belts broke, catalytic converter, the list goes on.

Excellent road car, poor reliabilty

Car driven all highway miles. Excellent engine and drive train. Quiet interior, low wind noise. 32 mpg w/ 6spd. Solid handling and tracking, supurb braking. Very high frequency of maintenance and expense compared to previously owed Volvos. Parking brake failed 3x, climate control 2x (and never the same as new), teleaid 1x, CD player 2x, both rear coils cracked 1x, strut bushing replaced 3x, fuel line clogged 1x, keys 1x, turn signal harness 1x, light harness 1x, oil level sensor 1x, ignition Lock and Steering Lock 1x, ELT connector 1x. The amount of service necessitated selling the car. It is a huge dissapointment as the car is a joy to drive.

I bought my C240 used thinking Mercedes had a good reputation for cars that would last. Found out the hard way, maybe it used to be like that, but not these days. It was a comfortable car, good build quality, good materials, but too many problems. In the yr that I had it: $350 for the CD changer, $300 for the auto climate control control unit, $350 for a MAS air flow unit, $60 for a new MAP sensor, $850 for a windshield for the auto intermittent wipers, $200 for a lower strut, $100 for sway bar end links, $1400 for new struts, $700 for rotors and pads. Paint chips easily, rear package tray fades, dash display fades out in the summer heat. I got rid of it before something else happened.

I bought the car in 2008 with 50k miles on it for $11,000. I traded in my 1998 Cadillac deVille for what I called my "German Experiment". The 2001 C320 has some very nice features. It handles well on the highway and the engine is bullet-proof. There are so many little things that have gone wrong. The power seat controls, the air damper that controls the vent/floor air, the rear window shade, a $900 gas pump, the 6-CD player, and more. The single-most bothersome problem is the paint. Soon after I purchased the car I noticed very small rust bubbles on the door panels and front and rear fenders. Over time they have grown to be large rust spots -the size of silver dollars and larger. What a disappointment! These are certainly not the Mercedes Benz of the 1970's and 80's. I recently went back to a Cadillac and will probably never purchase a Mercedes again. This German Experiment has failed.

2001-C240, 165,000 miles. I will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, EVER buy another Mercedes. 1) I had to unplug the power seats because they drain the battery if left plugged in overnight. 2) Automatic trunk opener does not work. 3) Sunroof does not open properly. 4) Cup holder does not work. 4) Dash lights do not work. 5) It sounds like either the rear bearings or the transmission is going out. 5) Poor gas mileage (20-23 mpg). 6) two spark plugs per cylinder. Each spark plug cost $20.00. 7) The rear window shade does not work properly. 8) Cigarette lighter does not work. I do not smoke but I need it to keep my phone charged. 9) CD changer does not work properly. 10) The radio will shut off on its own but if I open the passenger side door the radio comes back on. A mechanic told me that the engine will last forever but the rest of the car will cost you your house! I have a 1995 Toyota Camry with 395,000 miles on it and everything still works.

Loved driving the car, great handling! Made me look forward to the drive to/from work. Fun on the weekends too! However, having an alternator go out at 52,000 miles is ridiculous. We bought this car used, 44,000 miles, in May of 2005. After the alternator was fixed at the dealer yesterday afternoon, drove the car straight to be sold. We felt like this car was ready to become a money pit. We had MANY bulb failures, and a "thumping" that the dealer couldn't ever figure out nor fix. We had researched the Lexus and intended to buy one, but, found this car on the lot and fell in love. Reliability is very important to us, and we (I) made the wrong decision.

About 3 months ago I picked up my first MB: a 2001 C320, one owner, 51,000 miles, garage-kept, and appeared well cared for. I am GREATLY disappointed in the paint. The paint easily chips, exposes the metal below and begins to "spider" out with blistering rust underneath the surrounding paint. If left unchecked, the car will be a mess in less than a year. It reminds me of the '72 AMC Gremlin my father purchased for less than $2k. The paint job was horrible and did not last a year! Never in my wildest dreams did I think that paint would be a problem with this car. I have stuck to American cars until this one and I am sorry I did not purchase another Cadillac or a Buick. I miss my Cadillac!

The only reason I bought this car was it came with a 6-speed manual transmission, the only MB sold with a manual in the USA in 2002,and it was the smallest MB to fit a family of 4-5. The car has excellent ride for it size and fun to drive with 6-speed manual. It has more power than I need with a small V-6. I must say built quality is poor, especially when it comes to electrical components. We had all kinds of problems with those dummy keys, they had to change several times; one time the trunk would not open for weeks until the dealer ordered parts and fixed it; and now the radio is not working properly. If I have to buy another car of this size again, it will be a BMW 3 series.

I look forward to the drive everytime I get behind the wheel and step on the gas, as it has power, handling, and style. What I hate is the reliability. I had more problems with this one car than with my 10 previous cars combined, including a 20 year old $300 Accord. I still love it but it's easy to go bankrupt fixing this car. Problems: power steering pump broke, cam and crank sensors ($1k repair), dual zone climate not dual anymore, vent solenoid making noises, alternator replaced, numerous light bulb failures, other minor electrical gremlins that I stopped bothering with. Do not buy this car unless you have FULL warranty or money to fix it. Otherwise great driver's car.

I bought this car used from a dealership and quickly realized that I would encounter numerous issues with it. It looks great inside and out but it stops there.I have had so many repairs from the dealer they know which loaner car I like best and I have developed a friendship with one of the CSR's at the dealer. At one point they have my car for over 4 weeks trying to determine an issue and even brought Mb Germany into the mix. I didn't expect a MB to have so many issues...broken climate control unit, steering column,cd player, digital dash display and more. The paint chips and has faded in numerous places and the door seals have dry-rotted making for a very loud ride on the road.Poor form MB!

Yet to repair: fading LCD instrument display, pass seat heater, front shocks, cracked cigarette tray cover, shifter (base pulled away from console), steering wheel, valve cover gaskets, clicking noise in drive shaft, trunk handle.

It combines the latest saftey features with leading edge styling, it raises the bar for the competition while paying homage the rich history of its marque. There is no other car in the $32-$38 price range that offers the luxury, safety, performance and status of the MB C.

I ordered the C240 months before the Dec 2000 delivery. During the first 2 years, the car had all kinds of minor problems that kept me returning to the dealership around twice a month. The rear light bulbs were out every week, the speakers were replaced twice, AC, windows. Between 20k to 65k, the car was a joy to drive, and was pretty much problem free. From 65k on, the AC was a problem, the check engine light, the coolant light, the digital dash, the battery, the noise from the steering. I had spend over $5k fixing items outside of 'normal maintance', and the car just keep coming up with new problems. This is the most unreliable foreign car I have ever own.

Advice- if you're looking for a used vehicle- move on. This car is a real lemon. I've called the national customer service but received the well rehearsed--- "it's only our obligation to fix your car under the terms of the warrenty". I asked for a review of my file and was told by a Ms. Clarke "that's not how its done. "contact your deealership". implied-- we,ve got your money now sucker-- where's our incentive to help you? The car has had 2 transmission leaks in 2 years and vaious other electrical or engine problems totaling 20 visits for non- routine visits.

I purchased my 2001 C240 new and drove less then 5,000/yr. In that time, every electronic system in the car that could fail did so. My dealer was as helpful as they could be and, after 1-1/2 yrs of nearly monthly repairs, suggested I request Mercedes assist me in replacing the car. It took six months but after two letters from me and the support of my dealership, Mercedes helped me financially to replace the car with a new 2003 C240. I am delighted with the new car - absolutely no problems to date - knock wood! Unlike the first car, the new one has controls that work the first time. Time will tell but so far, I am very pleased with the new C240.

Changed the remote key opener at least three times, and to cap it all off, the brakes had to be changed after 14,000. In total this car spent 1 month in the shop. Part of the problem lies with the dealer. Over a month to get an appointment and 1 week to get the car back.

In the four years we have owned this vehicle reliability has been a major concern. Blinker bulbs have been replaced 4-5 times. The power seat became inoperative. We've had Intermittent problems with sun roof and back window shade opening and closing properly. Power steering fluid leaked from the car. Air conditioning system failed to cool after 3.5 years, and the dealer originally could not find leak. Six months later, the same problem arose, the leak was found, and the repair cost $1800. Alternator recently failed while driving at highway speeds, the car stalled, almost causing a major traffic accident. Cost to repair $1000. The gas pedal is non-responsive when starting off from zero miles per hour.

I have had numerous problems with my car. Every electrical feature has had a problem. Got a new motor for my su roof, all light bulbs have been replaced several times within 3 years (never had to do that in my GMC), stahls, recieved new A/C, and the list goes on. I only had my car for 3 years and I had it serviced way too many times for a Mercedes. Customer Service was always good. But this year (2001)Mercedes did not live up to it's reputation. Fun to drive but not worth the hassle of taking it in the shop every other month. I'm too busy for that.

Leased it in 11/2000 and purchased at lease-end. Few problems; but ALL cars have problems, ALL of them! I have the sport package with xenons, phone, CD changer and it is an awesome ride especially in light of the hands-free laws in certain states. Would I buy another? Yes! But not where I got this one.

I preordered the car in Dec. 2000. The car is wonderful to drive. It's comfortable, fast, and sporty enough to whip through the corners. Yes, the car could use some more power for my tastes, but it has plenty for normal use. The car gets good gas mileage considering engine size/weight. Main problem is quality. The car is being fixed every 2-3 months. Engine, transmission, electronics, brakes, AC, radio, CD changer, paint flaking off and lights. The dealer has been very receptive and everything has been fixed for free, but I am tired of the problems. My warranty is running out and I think I am going to sell it. If you are looking to buy a used MB avoid this model like the plague.

The service at Bob King's Autohaus has been SUPERIOR, lucky because I take it in on a regular basis for one thing or another. The computer chip/remote key went haywire after 2 1/2 years; the door handle had to be replaced; and I've had to buy new tires twice already. I think I better dump it before the warranty runs out!

Car handles very well, C320 has excellent power...ride is "sporty" and fun to drive. Some minor inconveniences such as side view mirrors too small...cup holder inconvenient. Difficult to get in and out of rear seats.

My first Mercedes-a HUGE disappointment. Greatlooking car that drives beautifully but..I feel thatI paid for a Mercedes and got a Dodge or Yugo. The problem-build Quality! The car has only 18,000 miles on it and the list of problems is way too long:Squeaky seats, moonroof malfunctions, software problems, hood swicthes fell off, brakes(rotors and pads had to be replaced at 7000 miles),defective electronics, transmission problems, replaced SOS system, continuous electronic door lock problems. This a comfortable, great driving car that but it is NOT what I expected from Mercedes and it is NOT worth the money. It will be a long time before I look at another Mercedes.

We bought this car expecting to receive a quality automobile, and it has been nothing but one problem after another. Of the 6 vehicles in my drive way this one spends more time in the shop the the other 5 combined. They obviously need to revamp the electrical system, brakes and train the service departments to deal with complaints instead of ignoring them completely. I have never been more disappointed in a vehicle in my life. What a waste of money, time and effort. Resell value is a joke.

I have had this Benz for 150,000 miles so far and I am extremely impressed by its reliability and quality. We shipped this car to Lebanon where the roads are horrible! Ever since then we have had only routine maintenance and an air conditioner replacement. Otherwise this car is the most reliable car in our garage it has never died on us, never overheated, it never does anything its not supposed to do! The traction in the wet is not the best, but the handling in dry conditions is wonderful and responsive. Its that solid German enginering that is outstanding. The feeling of driving a solid well made car makes me hate driving most domestic cars. This car is a great investment!

The vehicle has been in the shop for warranty repair twice a month since purchased - between electrical problems, sensor failures, integrated telephone failures (on 3rd phone), and overall lack of response from MB - RUN from purchasing one of these lemons! It basically boils down to one thing - MB no longer holds the reliability it once prided itself for manufacturing. They have gone the path of "Chrysler" reliability and quality.

I always wanted a Mercedes and purchased a C320 2 yrs ago. It has been at the MB dealer 4 times. I have had the starter sensor replaced, alternator replaced and codes reset many times. I live 75 miles from the dealer and it costs $225 each time it has to be towed. Now I am looking at a $2700 transmission repair due to transmission fluid leaking on computer componants inside the transmission. Too bad since the car is a eye catcher, super fast and receives many compliments. I will be trading it in on a Toyota/Honda/Nissan as soon as I get it back on the road.

No quality customer service here and Mercedes doesn't stand behind the car. Brakes are soft and need replacing often(they suggest every 10-14000 miles). Dealerships aren't knowledgeable enough to do repairs(they nicked my leather, dented the hood and roof top, scratched the wood grain) and denied they did it. Don't buy from Mercedes..honda,toyota,nissan,bmw...anyone else is better.

Love all the cool features, gadgets, style and performance, BUT the reliability with the electronics are very disappointing... something's always "broken" and the dealer usually is unable to duplicate. Do you think we invent the fact that it has a problem????

This is my second Mercedes because my first one was totaled in an accident where someone traveling at over 65MPH hit me from behind. I walked out with 2 scratches, so I had to buy another Mercedes. It's been an extremely safe car, and it auto-corrects in slippery roads. I've had the car for 7.5 years, and it's been a very reliable, safe car to drive.
