    Hard to find quality

I bought this vehicle used in 2002 as a graduation gift for my daughter but it is now my personal vehicle. It has 170,000 miles and will easily make 200,000. Just two criticisms of this extremely well-built SUV which should have continued to be made based upon its performance: The rear bumpers rust quickly and badly (I learned its true for for virtually all of them) and even for 1994 the fuel economy should have been better. On the other hand, it is extremely reliable, the body did not have the bad rusting problems of its Explorer counterpart, did, and its rarity makes it additionally fun to have and drive.

    Better than 1994 Explorer

I went to a Ford dealer on 9-5-1993. And there I found a brand new 1994 Mazda Navajo LX 4WD. I thought it was odd until I looked at the 1994 Explorer that was next to it and realized that the looked identical. I came back on 9-12-1993 and it was still there, so ... I bought it. I still have it today.

I bought my Navajo when it was one year old w/20,000 miles in 1992. In the intervening 90,000 miles, I have found the Navajo to be unusually reliable. It has never required any major repairs. Car has tow package w/3.73 rear end gears and has always towed very well, even large loads (albeit usually not much faster than 65 MPH). 112k miles, and the engine has literally never burned a drop of oil!

This vehicle was wonderful. The only thing that ever went wrong with it was the starter, other than that it ran like a dream. Off-road it was amazing. The car would ride over rough terrain and you could hold a can of soda with out spilling it. I feel that the Navajo is the forgotten SUV. Not many people know what this vehicle is and that it even exists. It is pretty much a clone of the Ford Explorer and its parts are pretty much all manufactured by Ford.

The Mazda Navajo is a very strong and capable vehicle. The four wheel drive is excellent, and it's turning radius is even better. The LX leather package includes leather seats, and all other options. The interior is very comfortable, yet it means business. THe exterior has excellent trim effects and stock alloy wheels. I love the vehicle!

Ever since I got this car I have only had to change the oil and put gas in. The car is problem free for an older car. Great option for a first SUV, college student, and someone that likes to throw everything in the back seat of the car.

I really enjoy driving this SUV - fun to drive and extremely reliable. I've owned it for over a year now and, besides the regular maintenance, have only had minor repairs (sensor and thermostat) which amounted to about $300. I did just put on new tires - a size larger than recommended, which seems to increase the handling and speed. The car has 112,000 miles on it - I'm going to try and see it to 200,000!

Has gotten me out of more tight spots than I care to think about. Great on the highway and a hoot on snowmobile trails in the summer! Plows 4' snow and cruises over the continental divide in the middle of summer.

I love this thing. It handles like a car on the road and tackles rough terrain with ease. I've gotten lots of respect out of this car and I give it lots of respect. Would definately buy another one!

I own a Navajo and had it lifted 6 inches as well as performance parts put into it and it holds up great! Yeah it get all the normal truck problems; tire alignments and normal wear and tear. Over all it's my little big baby.

I've used my Navajo for hauling a half ton of tile setting tools and materials, and towing travel trailers for almost 20 years. Aside from a pulsation in the front passenger side brakes that develops like clockwork every 30,000 miles (inevitably requiring machining or replacing the rotors), this has been a fantastic vehicle for me. I change the oil every 3000 miles, and I've done little more than follow the recommended maintenance schedule. I added a quart of Slick 50 Teflon coating 19 years ago at the first oil change(just to see if there was anything behind the hype), and I'm sold. The engine has remained strong and I'm heading for 221,000 miles.

I bought this vehicle with 120000 miles and have put about another 25000 on it so far. It hasn't burned any oil yet. Also I haul a 22ft cabin cruiser boat that is 500lbs. above the towing capacity it pulls it up the ramp no problem.

It's a good truck. I've driven 230,000 miles and it keeps on going. Sure it has it's list of problems, 4WD stopped working, armrest broke, burns a little oil (1qt per 5k miles), but the engine still has most of it's original performance.

Ok, I just have to point out that these are exactly the same cars as the Ford Explorer, yet somehow Edmunds has a Consumer rating of 8.3 for the Explorer and 6.6 for the Navajo. For anyone looking, these are EXACTLY the same car - they're a Ford Explorer with Mazda insignia on them. I just got into mine and, after a tuneup and some Slick50, it's running pretty darned good for a truck with 146,000 miles on it.

Very good built truck; fast acceleration, stops fast with very little lockup. Great 4x4 in snow but did convert to manual locking hubs since autos are junk. Great highway gas mileage -- went from Worcester MA to Portland Maine and back with a half tank of gas. Great truck, starts up every time even when we had a cold spell of -20 F. Even the heat blows nice and hot.

i bought a used 91 lx in 1998 and it was the worst car experience i've ever had by a huge margin! a total lemon, left me stranded so many times, i use to refer to it as the paycheck eater. terrible, terrible vehicle! i felt guilty trading it in, i hope they scrapped it and didn't sell it on, i wanted to put it on a target range and let people site in rifles with it for the remainder of its miserable existence. will never go mazda again after that experience.

I bought the car with 24K miles and put another 109 on it. The 4x4 worked great in Maine winters and through the mud off-road. The only major problem throughout the years was the A.C.-- replaced twice. The truck was very reliable which is contrary to the Consumer Report ratings.

Next to a Ford pickup this is the most comfortable car I have ever had. It holds the road in all weather conditions and is certainly fun as well as relaxing to drive. Its comfort is great and size is great, other than mine being a 2 door -- as age gets to us it's hard to get into the back seat but once there it's great. I love the size over all. The rear door is great as it opens the window separately and then the whole back opens also. I have put 120,000 miles on my '92 since we got it in 98. I LOVE IT.

I had a 1992 Navajo LX 4WD, until 1999, and I was rear ended on the Belt Parkway, in Queens, NY, not a scratch ! Had a solid rear bumper, but you should see the other guy, totaled, steaming wreck, and he left the scene. It got me through upstate NY 2 ft snowstorms with no problem.

The name of my car offended my many Indian friends. They actually got so mad that they keyed my car. But, overall it could be worse, even though I can't manage to give it more than a 1 in any catagory. It is the worst car I've ever owned, however. Of course, it could be worse.
