good around town van
I bought this van six years ago for only $800. It had 123,000 miles on it and it now has 160,000. It performed great on long trips to southern Mexico and back. I've had some engine work done once after it blew a belt and overheated, but other than that it's been regular maintenance. Over the years it's cost me $98/month to run (less gas and insurance). I now have a 1996 MPV but can't part with the 1991. It's comfortable, you sit up high, it's simple to fix, and it's inexpensive to run. I would probably still drive it across country if pressed.
Reliable, long lasting
No sports car but very long lasting and reliable, still going strong. Purchased this vehicle in 1993 at 6 months old; I was the second owner. It has a towing package and has pulled my loaded horse trailer and now pulls our 22 foot boat and trailer with ease, including up and down a steep ramp to the water.
Poorly Maintained and Still Runs!
I've had a few problems, including burning the tranny twice, timing belt failure, and a tricky connection in the starting system (if I drive it hard for an extended period then turn off the engine for a short period, like at a convenience store, when I go to restart it I either have to jiggle the shifter or simply open then close the hood to get it started. I've also the paint is peeling on the rear hatch, but considering how poorly I maintain it and how much I drive it I think it's great! I can't wait to buy a brand new one and drive it into the ground, but I haven't been able to kill this one yet!
Very dependable vehicle
I purchased this minivan with about 70000 miles on it and now have about 178000. I have found it to be a very reliable vehicle, with the engine and the transmission still being original. It could use a little more power, but as I approach 200000 miles I can not complain about the service it has given our family. Our opinion is that it is a nicer, more comfortable van to drive than other vans of the same age.
Better luck elsewhere
My 1992 MPV is my second Mazda van (along with my 4 cyl. 1989 which was a much more reliable vehicle) and is a reasonably comfortable and good-driving minivan. But a new engine top end at 35K miles, new automatic transmission at 66K miles, annual air conditioning recharges/repairs, timing belt breaks at 40K miles, etc. were the main problems. And I REALLY maintained this vehicle well. Mazda corp. cusomer service was also less than stellar when I asked for some adjustment on the transmission and was told "too bad". My cost to drive was only a little less than the payment on my new Toyota Matrix XRS!
