99' Mazda Millinia

Can't say enough about reliability, I bought it new and it still drives with the performance as the day I drove it off the lot. I have 180K miles and still going. Never let me down on the highway. over 12yrs the only things that I have had to replace was an alternator after 70K miles, radiator after 130Kmiles, timing belt after 150kmiles, all other maintenance was routine done by myself such as brakes and oil changes. Great buy only regret is seating is low and now highway noise...but after 12 yrs who can complain!

I bought this car new and have generally enjoyed it for 9 years. Contrary to what the handbook and one of the reviewers say, the supercharged engine runs fine on 87 octane; in fact it got worse mileage on 91 octane. My car currently has 84000 miles on it, and I just drove it in late summer (90+ degrees heat) to the Outer Banks. It ran fine and provided excellent air conditioning the whole way. I followed Mazda's suggestion to replace the timing belt at 65000 miles and also had the water pump replaced (leaking). Oxygen sensors went out and a vacuum line popped off at 45000 and 50000 miles, respectively. Catalytic converter failed at 75000 miles (too early), for which Mazda picked up expense.

I purchased this car used with 24k miles on it 3.5 years ago. I now have 60k on it and it has had no problems. The Miller Cycle engine (210hp) is smooth and responsive. The power off the line is outstanding. Great quality inside and out. This car is one of the best kept secrets out there.

When I test drove my Millenia I was amazed. It had 101,000 miles on it and was in perfect shape. They drive like a Lexus but cost half the price. Driver and front passenger have lots of leg room, but not near enough head room. The backseat seems to be more comfortable. The dash layout is very well done in my opinon, and the automatic steering wheel is a nice touch. The Bose sound is fantasic. The steering is smooth, quick and very accurate. the brakes are great and stop fast. The car just feels SOLID. The only thing I can say that truly bothers me about the car is the fact that parts are extremely expensive for a Japanese car. And most work needs to be done at the dealer.

This was my first car and I loved it when I first bought it . The style is slick and unique. The only problem is the maintenance. It cost a lot of money to maintain and the check engine light comes on for everything. It is impossible to get the car to pass an inspection in new york!!! The car is very sensitive and cost a lot to maintain.

while I've only owned my milly for a month, I have always admired them for their very unique look. I'm a Mazda "fanboi" anyways and have owned several over the course of my life. the first thing I noticed about this car is that it would be exceptionally easy for me to work on myself as its engine is very similar to the MX-6 powerplant, which Ive owned 2 of and still own one today. the 2.5l engine is not expensive to maintain, but the 2.3l S engine certainly is. you will read several sites saying to watch for trans failures, that is mostly centered around the S model, not the non-S model. I'm planning on keeping this car for some time as I absolutely love it.

Transmission Troubles

My wife bought our 1999 Mazda Millenia in 2001 used for $16,500 before we were married. The trans. had to be replaced at 60K miles, and we continue to be disappointed with the way the thing takes off. The trans. is so extremely jerky. Starting off in first gear even the slightest touch of the gas pedal sends it screaming forward. Especially in traffic when it's stop and go. There is absolutely no easing forward with this trans. Another problem I have with this car is the leg-room. We drive from TN to LA several times a year to visit family, and my knees are in my chest all the time it seems. I'm only 6' by the way.

Great Performance, Ride, Fit and Finish. Could do without the bright chrome trim inside, reminds me a little of a pimp mobile, but as time goes on its less annoying. Third Millenia, first "S" would never buy a standard 6 cylinder again, much more fun to drive.

Excellent luxery car for the price. I am a little dissapointed in the resale value of the car. For a $30000 car, it loses it value to quickly. The engine and performance of the S edition (supercharged V6) is outstanding. I would put it next to a lexus anyday.

I purchased my Mazda Millenia new in 1999. It has been reliable and is still fun to drive! My previous car was a Mazda 626, had that for 9 years (106,00 miles)and because of how well it held up, I knew I would want another Mazda. The Millenia's style still turns heads. Nobody can believe I've had it 10 years. Gas mileage is around 20-24mpg. For the past several years, my husband will ask me if I'm ready to trade her in, but I have said no. I still enjoy my Mazda!

Very few problems. Heated seat pads and fog light replaced under warranty. Very solid, comfortable ride. Supercharger sometimes hesitate at take-off. The price for this kind of quality is unbeatable. Too bad 2002 is the Last year for the Millenia.

This is a beautiful, solid built car, but its very expensive to maintain. I've had problems with the catalytic converters and the check engine light. No repair or part is cheap on this car. The performance is great but unpredictable, the supercharger doesn't always kick in for some reason, but when it does, wow! This car will top out at 155 mph. It is smooth and steady, like a guided missile.

I bought my Millenia S in Oct 2000. Love the low profile aluminum rims and sleek design. Ran for several years with almost no mechanical issues. At the 8 year mark (approx 115k miles), I have sunk thousands into it. Suspension is so bad, I feel like I'm sliding on the road. Smoke from tail pipe every morning. Check engine light relentlessly on and off. Oil leak. Security system messed up. Constant problems with rims and tires. 5 sets of new tires in 10 years. I was hoping to drive this car to 175k and beyond but it's done at 135k. What a shame it didn't hold up better. Drove a Maxima for 10 years and prefer that by a long shot.

I have had this car for more than 7 years and 100K miles after buying it used with 40K miles. At 150K, small problems are creeping in like Power Steering Pump and CV boots, but before now I have done nothing but brakes, tires and belts. Great car that feels solid and provides great value compared to other cars in this segment. This is my families 4th mazda and all have reached 150K or more with little to no problems. AC system is the best I've ever seen!!!

This Mazda Millenia has been the most fun vehicle and the most reliable and overall inexpensive auto I have owned out of 10 drive-off-the-lot new cars. I will always consider Mazda first before looking to other cars. I can't praise this car enough for its dependability, beauty and pure fun in putting its horsepower to work. Everyone who rides in it is just amazed at the quality, beauty and toughness of its interior and can't get over its racehorse performance! I hope the next car I have to buy is even 70% of what I admire about this car.

I have had the car for about four months. I enjoy driving it. Eventhough it is no leader in the recent horsepower war, the S model can very well hold its own on the highway without a shutter or a grunt of strain. The exterior is sedate, yet captivating. The interior is nicely appointed, but could use some faux wood across the overly bland plastic dash.

i have not had the car long enough to really know the liability yet. i really love the car and the way it is built my only critic is that the tranmission set up is not that great it's a hard take off sometimes you can actually feel the transmission shifting. This is only sometimes so otherwise its a lovely vehicle. i had it checked out and was told that they all do that.

I purchased this car in 2003 with 49,000 miles on the car. Great looking car but have run into a few problems since owning the car. Watch for smoke out of tailpipe in the morning. Had to replace the supercharger at 64,000 miles. Very expensive ($3500) to replace. If you buy this car used get the extended warranty; it will protect you on the supercharger. Otherwise, car looks great and runs strong in milder climates. Will be a bit sluggish in hot weather.

The is by far the best car I have ever owned and I have had many. I get the premium package (very nice). I drove the S and this one but was concerned about a full time supercharger. The 6 is Mazda base engined used for the 626. It has 175 HP only 35 less than the S plenty for me. The only real problem has been on wheel bearing that went bad. The seat are a little hard and the head room is low (not a problem for anyone under 6'). This car does depreciate fast, which can be good if you are buying this car now.

I've owned my 1999 pearl white Millenia for over 3 years now and I've loved every moment behind the wheel. The interior is comfortable. The exterior styling is incredibly eye-catching. People check the trunk lid to see who made such a fine-looking vehicle! Some people have mistaken my Millenia for a Mercedes C-Class actually. It's simply a great car for the money and I would gladly purchase a 2002 Millenia some day.

I bought the vehicle used and had problems since. The 2nd day my keyless remotes stop working. One month later, the check engine light came on. The vehicle had vacuum leaks (cost $436). The next month, the check engine light came on again, this time it was a defective ignition coil (cost $632). A tuneup cost $800, much more than a Toyota Avalon. Regular maintenance is too much for this vehicle. I am trading it in.

The car has had some minor problems that were covered by the extended warranty, i.e., upper control arms had to be replaced, knock sensor (2 times), and the EGR valve. Other than that, the car has been great and now has 98K miles on it. It has good power, drives and brakes well, and gets great gas mileage. I think the car would probably go well over 100K miles. It looks new!

Millenia Great but unable to get SMOG'd

I loved my Millenia, ... bought in Oct. '99 until I tried to get it SMOG'd the first time last Oct - when it had only 24,000 miles on it. This may be a "California" issue, but to the consumer, it is a Mazda issue. Mazda insists it is a "drive cycle" issue. After 3 trips to triple A for DMV registration extentions, I'm out of patience (with only 24,000 miles on my vehicle and a "malfunction indicator light" that will not go out. Someone has to fix this. It's a problem I hear over and over and over. Codes come up and until they go away, the consumer pays. Mazda's are reknown for this. A very bad deal - for such a great car - otherwise.

I purchased this car used (only had 30,000 miles) in 2001. This is a great car and a good value as a used vehicle. The interior room leaves a little bit to be desired (I am 6'3"), but the seats offer enough adjustment to compensate. The front seats are not very comfortable, especially on long drives. The fuel economy is not exceptional, especially when you have to put premium in the tank. I have had a problem with the check engine light coming on and off and now it just stays on; however, I have not had it fixed since the driving performance has not been affected and I am cheap. Overall it is a blast to drive and runs like a scalded ape when the RPMs are high.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my used 1999 Mazda Millenia. It has been extremely reliable and has averaged in the 25-26 mpg range since I bought it. The exterior is clean and sporty and although the interior lacks some polish, it is an overall nice investment. The dealership that I purchased it from can not keep them on his lot. I think these vehicles are more popular as reliable used cars than they were when they were introduced new.
