The automotive press loves the CX-9, here’s why…

The CX-9 is smaller than most vehicles in this segment but since I’m the only occupant 98% of the time it meets my needs. It’s arguably the best looking in terms of design and has the most luxurious interior of any other crossover in its class avoiding the excess of cheap plastic so common in other rides. The leather is superb, there’s real aluminum trim on the doors and dash, the knobs for the infotainment system are beautifully machined aluminum that you’d expect to see in German import costing thousands more. I was reluctant to move from a V6 to a turbo 4 cylinder but Mazda’s tuned this engine to perform and you’ll never notice the difference thanks to bountiful torque. You’d hope for better mileage but my experience in mixed driving so far is about 22-25 mpg. The chassis and suspension deliver exceptional handling and a quiet ride overall. Most autos today in the upper level trim include a suite of safety features which depending on the maker can be intrusive but not the Mazda. Lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise, reactive braking, blind spot monitoring, etc. are engaging and actually help you drive more safely rather than annoy you. The controversial engine start/stop alleged fuel saving feature is NOT found on the CX-9. The head’s up display is outstanding providing speed, speed limit info, safety suite feedback, and turn-by-turn directions from the nav system (unless you’re using Android Auto or Apple Car play for navigation). A 12 speaker Bose stereo is better than any factory system I’ve experienced in years. It’s not all perfect; the front cockpit is a little snug (more like a sports car than a SUV/mini-van), the front seats could have more adjustment and longer cushions for better thigh support (not a problem for me but taller drivers might notice), third row seating is a penalty box for other than small children (I just folded them down and expanded my cargo capacity), and interior cabin storage is very meager. The HVAC seems a little slow to heat/cool the interior but acceptable (the ventilated cooled seats do work very well), and the infotainment/nav is kind of clunky to use, looks dated in appearance (your opinion will depend on what your last car was), and is quite slow to boot up. I’ve never had a 360 degree camera so the Mazda’s is a useful novelty but as others have noted the resolution is poor which is surprising given how far miniature camera tech has advanced the past few years. The piano black trim around the shifter and door window switches is so fragile it will scratch just looking at it. Finally, if you’re into physical media the CX-9 does not offer a CD player available. Overall after a month of ownership I am enjoying my new Mazda and recommend it to those who need a crossover/SUV with more room than the 2-row models, but will rarely if ever need to put passengers in the very back. I researched mid-sized 3-row crossovers for over a year before making this purchase and highly recommend anyone shopping for any new vehicle spend a lot of time studying owner’s forums to get the straight scoop on potential problem areas. The Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring (FWD) beat out the Toyota Highlander Limited Platinum and Honda Pilot Touring in my evaluation. One Year Update: I've owned my CX-9 GT for just over a year now and it's been a trouble free pleasure to own. I've had no difficulties with this SUV and have a little over than 7K miles on it. Rides and handles great and the performance from the 4 cylinder turbo engine is brisk. My only annoyance is the sluggish boot up of the infotainment system; occasionally it won't load all of the Sirius/XM stations. Mileage on mostly rural backroads and highways is 22-24 MPG. 2 YEAR UPDATE: I'm starting on my 3rd year of ownership of the 2019 CX-9 GT with FWD and as I'm retired and with reduced activity in 2020 due to Covid only have 11,000 miles on the odometer. So far it's been a great vehicle, comfortable and sporty to drive for an SUV. Maintenance has thus far been routine oil/filter changes. The only thing I've had an issue with are the automatic folding side mirrors. Sometimes when the car is unlocked and the mirrors are fully deployed when I open the door they will either close completely or start to close then reopen. They never do this when the car is running or I'm driving, just when parked and the engine is off. There is a TSB about the auto folding mirrors which my VIN is covered under but the dealership couldn't reproduce the problem and couldn't find anything wrong. Other than that it's been a good experience. 3 YEAR UPDATE: I'm a little over 15K miles on my CX-9 and it continues to perform just fine. On the last routine service I had the original battery checked and it failed; the dealership replaced it under warranty. I'm still on the OEM tires. Mileage this past winter has varied from 22-25 MPG which is as good as I get. One red flag for potential pre-owned buyers is that on the Mazda 24/7 owners forum I'm following an ongoing thread about issues with this generation CX-9 with the turbo 4-cyl. Some owners are having coolant leaks due to an engine defect which requires a major repair and in some cases an entire new engine. It seems earlier model years or those with higher mileage are involved but I'm monitoring this situation closely. Caveat emptor. 4 YEAR UPDATE: I've got a little over 20K miles on my 2019 CX-9 GT FWD and continue to enjoy pretty much trouble free motoring. The electric folding mirrors continue to do strange things, the passenger side mirror stopped folding all the way in when locking the vehicle for a few months this past winter and the dealer couldn't find a problem. Lately it has been operating normally? Mileage remains about the same around 22-23 MPG and occasionally 24-25 on longer highway trips. As mentioned last time, engine problems with this generation Mazda CX-9 turbo 4 are well documented on owner's forums like Mazda 24/7; specifically a coolant leak due to a cracked cylinder head or an oil leak with both often requiring a complete engine replacement costing thousands. This is happening in higher mileage CX-9's and since they are out of warranty the owner is having to eat the cost in most cases. There are TSB's out on this known problem but no recall and affected owners are not happy. I'd advise anyone considering buying a used 2016-2022 CX-9 to do some homework on these owner's forums and know what you are getting into. I plan to ride this out until I replace my car in early 2025 since I don't drive that much and hope the lower mileage and wear and tear will spare me this problem. FINAL UPDATE: Had to delete some previous updates due to space, I traded in this vehicle in January before the tariffs and bought a 2025 Ford Explorer ST. I looked at the CX-90 and find the interior storage space to be even worse than the CX-9. I didn't want another Mazda because of the engine issues I described earlier in other CX-9's even though I did not experience them. Caveat emptor for those considering buying a used one of this generation.

Undercover Luxury SUV

I love my new 2019 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring trim SUV. The interior is on par with luxury brand SUVs. I looked at the Acura RDX and MDX and couldn’t justify paying the extra money for a vehicle with comparable equipment for 10K more. The ride is very quiet with very little if any road noise. My 2016 RDX had much more road noise. The handling is impressive but the ride is a little stiffer than my Acura. I think that is due to the fact Mazda concentrates on handling first then comfort. The ride is still very comfortable and bumps are absorbed nicely. The heads up display is my favorite feature. You literally never have to take your eyes off the road with all the information displayed on the heads up display. The sign recognition is awesome. The overall styling (which is very subjective) is very classy and compares to more expensive SUV with fit and finish. Power is adequate but nothing to brag about. If speed is important than there are probably better choices. I personally like the overall balance between the ride, handling, quiet Interior, power, and styling (inside and out). The Mazda CX-9 is a great SUV with plenty of room for most and all the bells and whistles most luxury SUVs in higher trim level posses. If you want to spend the money for a luxury brand name go for it. If you want the most value for your money and still get all the bells and whistles, then you can’t beat the CX-9.

Just picked it up after owning a cx5 for a year. Where I felt the cx5 lacked, the cx9 picks up the slack in refinement and luxury. It is truly a joy to drive. Styling inside and out is well thought out and outside of the same old same old in mid sized suv’s. The addition of the ventilated front seats is what I was waiting for. Apple car play is another plus. This car is a head turner. My only wish is that the driver seat had a couple inches more in width for us big fellas!

I’d owned a grand Cherokee (nice power, ok ride, poor fuel, poor seats) and a Yukon (great utility, good power, blah driving, aweful gas mileage). Test drove Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer). Dismissed Volvo and Audi on cost and reliability. No opinion of Mazda till I drove it. Instant smiles. Now, a year or so in. I still smile. The torque is delightful. Like a diesel without clatter and smoke. It pulls, it has superb throttle response in traffic and really nice midrange response. It does not like being pushed hard. It gets a little buzzy or rorty. Nothing really objectionable but it’s not throaty like a good V8 or rev you like a good v4 or straight 6. But it’s damn good. Seats are good but not class leading. But I regularly drive from San Francisco to Bandon, Oregon (8 or 9 hours) and get out with no fatigue. That’s a combo of ride, quiet and seat comfort. Would buy again without hesitation.

I Love my 2020 Mazda CX9 - an awesome car!

This car is a great pleasure to drive. The interior is high end and luxurious! Seating (I have the second row captains seats) and comfort are impeccable, great gas mileage (I've been getting 26 highway), and it really has enough room with the third row that could fit 2 children well enough and that's about the same for other cars in the same class I looked at. ( It's quite easy to get to the third row with the second row captains seats.) The cargo capacity is fine and there's a good amount of storage under the floorboard in the rear cargo area. There's loads of overall cargo space if you fold down the third row should you need it. Other vehicles in this class couldn't compare to the quality and layout of the interior. I am really happy with the handling, and all the bells and whistles of the Mazda. The stereo is fantastic and the car is so quiet I sometimes forget it's running while I'm parked. I also do not hear road noise while driving. The learning curve took me a little while to figure out. Now it's instinctive. Thank you Mazda!

I love to drive it on my daily commute. Whenever possible, I love to go out, especially on weekends and holidays. Driving is always a pleasure. Mine is a GT, the adaptive headlights are awesome on the night. The Bose sound is heaven on earth. It's TRUE that cargo space is not huge , but for me, family of 4, has been more than enough.

I leased a grand touring model with AWD in black with beige/black gut. My wife and I went to a car show and was wowed compared to many models. We immediately went to a dealer and test drove it. We were hooked. I’ve driven more expensive name brand models and dollar for dollar this truck is comparable but mostly exceeded expectations. Fit and finish is excellent. The drive is addictive. The car company is strictly Japanese owned and made. Once Ford got out of the picture the quality and engineering has excelled. My only regret is I wish I went for the signature model. Too many features to list in grand touring. You will not be disappointed.

I have now had my 2019 CX-9 for 44 months. I am updating my review to say that I have had zero issues with the car since I bought it. I decided to buy it at the end of my 36 month lease because I could buy it for about 24K under the contract when it is selling locally for 31-33K. The following review still holds: I got my CX-9 after having a 2016 Lexus RX350 for three years. The CX-9 is much more fun to drive because it is more agile, has more technology for the money and is much easier to park. This car responds very well and hits the corners like a much smaller car. My only complaint is that the seat is not as comfortable as I had hoped. It has a dip in the seat, as if designed to cup your rear and is narrow and short by comparison to the RX350. The RX350 seats are really comfortable and roomy. This car has a moonroof, premium package with Bose Speakers and has lane assist, and blind spot warning, and a navigation system (with a 93 pg manual). To get that in a Lexus RX350 I would have had to pay much much more than I paid for the CX-9. It is built just as beautifully and fits 7 people in it. Like most 7 seat SUVs, it is hard to get out of the back row, but at least it has a well for their legs and plenty of room. I highly recommend it. I hope Mazda makes a hybrid CX-9. I would transition into that one if available in the future.

Semi touch screen

I enjoy the fit and finish. I like the handling along with almost all of the tech. The worst thing is the navigation. I can't zoom once moving. I can't use touchscreen at all and the knob is limited. I don't understand why you get a bigger screen along with bigger fonts. I would prefer more space because of the zoom. The engine is good with a little lag but plenty of power. Impressive gas mileage. The ride is quieter than my BMW. 2020 cx9 signature

2019 CX-9 Touring w/ Premium Package

Matt, 08/22/2019
2019 Mazda CX-9 Touring 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl Turbo 6A)
55 of 58 people found this review helpful

We previously had a CX-5 and were in the market for something new. Cross shopped Acura RDX and Volvo XC60 with the CX-9. To be honest, our final decision came down to price. Mazda had really good incentives and the dealer was extremely motivated to sell. When cross shopping we felt the RDX and XC60 didn't offer much of an upgrade for the extra price. Difference in price was ~ 6k and I just couldn't justify it. I'm really frugal though. If price was no option I would have gone with a decked out RDX. So about the CX-9, it really is a drivers car. Feels competent in turns and never feels underpowered. The reviews that say this feels like something smaller are spot on. The 2.5L turbo works well and even though the 6 speed tranny is down gears it feels fine. Other than better MPG I don't think a transmission with more ratios is needed. I love the scroll wheel, its intuitive and works well, and physical buttons for HVAC are a plus in my opinion(XC60 is all touch screen, no redundant controls for heating/cooling). On the highway this thing feels like a tank, its smooth and quiet, feels very high end. All the doors close with a thud and materials used on interior are nice. So you are probably wondering why the 3 star review, well its the seats themselves. Why in the world Mazda did you taper the front seats in the chest/shoulder area. Make sure you take your time to test them before you buy. I test drove a CX-9 twice before buying. Both were short trips focused on driving(under 10 minutes) and the seats never struck me as a problem. Its only when I got it home and went on a 30 minute trip that I noticed. I am 6' 195 pounds and would say I have a fairly average build. My wife is 5' 8" and 135 pounds and she says they are just ok, not great but don't bother her. The bolstering digs into your upper back when you sit all the way back in the seats. I knew the seats were not going to be anything like those in the XC60, but after living with them for a few weeks they strike me as a bit ridiculous. Who did Mazda use as a template for engineering, a 10 year old girl? Even the CX-5 seats are wider in the shoulders, explain to me how the smaller entry vehicle has larger seats??? My thought is they are trying to imitate a high end sports car to sync up with their branding of this as a drivers car. Yea, its a drivers car, but also an SUV used for long family trips. Put comfortable seats in!! Its a shame, the rest of the car is really a steal at this price, but the seats ruin it. I have seen complaints elsewhere about the seats as well as the center console digging into larger drivers right knee. I find the center console to be fine, its just the seats that are bad. I like the firmness of them and the leather itself seems good (doesn't feel like leatherette or pleather) but the design is flawed. Maybe they thought it needed to be that aggressive since anyone that buys this car is going to be going all out all the time.... To the contrary most buyers probably never even push this in the corners so the bolstering is a waste. If you are a smaller human or have narrow shoulders this is a great car, otherwise pass to something more comfortable.

This car rocks

This car rocks. I've had the 2018 GT model for 3 months now and I can honestly say that even beyond that “new car feeling” phase, I really love this car. The good: 1) It is downright stylish and beautiful, both inside and out. It really is a head-turner. There aren’t many other CX9’s out there, and I often get asked about the car. 2) It is plenty powerful albeit with a very short turbo lag. I can’t think of any occasion where the engine wasn’t putting out what I needed. I can even burn rubber from a stop if ever I feel the need. 3) Has just about every safety feature. And unlike other cars I have driven, all these features are “well-tuned” and rarely do I get a false warning. 4) Handles like a sport car. Takes corners well, and instills confidence in the drive – feedback is good and you just know what the car is going to do. 5) Rides well – takes bumps very nicely and is, for the most part, quiet inside. 6) The Bose stereo is great. My gripes: 1) You cannot use the touchscreen when driving. Mazda disables this for safety. 2) The center console is extra wide and my knee hits up against it. 3) The stop-and-go cruise control takes you down to a stop in traffic jams, but you have to press resume or press the gas pedal once the car in front of you moves forward. This resume process can get tedious and I can’t imagine any safety reason why this is required. Just go already. 4) The adaptive cruise control is not smart enough to know that a car has just cut in front of you until that car is about ½ way into your lane, which often times requires intervention especially if that car did so aggressively. 5) Although you can roll up the windows after turning off the car, you can not close the sunroof unless the ignition is on. 6) There is no light in the glove box, nor does it lock. 7) Although it sounds like a great idea, I really don’t get much use out of the sign recognition system and find it gimmicky. It only shows you stop signs and speed limit signs. Don’t get me wrong, the feature is fine, I really don’t pay attention to it and don’t find it useful. 8) The built-in navigation system is not very good – hard to enter addresses, and the graphics are mediocre, nor does it include integrated traffic. I have added Mazda Carplay which has helped, but you lose turn-by-turn guidance on the head-up display when you use Google Maps/Apple Maps/Waze. 9) The lines on the backup camera don’t move with your steering wheel. 10) The Mazda Connect info system is not as intuitive to use as it could be and could be laid out a little better. Seems like there are a few more clicks than are necessary to get around. 11) The engine can be a little loud when accelerating. 12) The fuel economy readings are tightly-coupled with the tripometers. The readings that show on the dashboard are not current readings – they are readings since you last reset your tripometer. You can get current gas mileage readings, but it is buried as an app on the Mazda connect system and something you have to navigate to and open up to see. In summary…. If you are looking for an SUV with this style and size, then this car is definetly worth considering. Sitting in it is like sitting in a cockpit. Stylish, comfortable, sporting, powerful, quiet, and fully-loaded. Attention to details like nothing else in its class (Jeep, Explorer, Highlander, etc), and I dare say that it rivals the luxury brands. And a Mazda, right? Who knew?

I bought 2 Hondas in 80's, two Acura in 90's, then a CX-7 Grand Touring AWD several years ago. Loved it! I saw the redesigned CX-9 a couple years back and loved the new styling! The wait was over last month. While researching 3 row crossovers I noticed the CX-9 had great feedback, on par with luxury models. I decided to drive a Grand Touring FWD, but then I saw and drove the Signature, WOW! I used a buying service to get a negotiating price, then went to a nearby dealer and was surprised at the deal I was able to negotiate at end-of-month on a new Signature. The Mazda CX-9 Signature may not carry the prestige or have a 6 cylinder like Audi or ACURA, but handles / rides / accelerates as well, and is actually better looking (in my humble opinion. I went with Black, and love the Sedona leather interior and great trim accents - very classy! Also surprised to learn the CX-9 doesn't require premium gas (like the older CX-7) and yet it delivers the 310 ft-lbs of torque on regular or premium! Do your self a favor and check out the CX-9 Signature before you buy a Lexus, ACURA or AUDI. You'll get a great 3 row cross-over, and won't see the same vehicle next to you at every other intersection...

Been looking to upgrade from my trusty, but tired Scion xD. Loved that little car but it was getting "long in the tooth" and the line was terminated by Toyota. Looked at SUVs from Nissan, Toyota, Honda, Kia, and even Audi. As an overall package none of them had the same appeal as the CX-9. I purchased the Signature in Soul Red and elected to go with the Parchment Napa leather that makes for a good color combination, in and out. The ride is outstanding, performance is great, as is the handling. As mentioned so many times in many places, the Infotainment system could be better. For me, it does what I need it and I have no complaints about it. Regarding the third row space for passengers; don't use it so it matters little to me. As long as fuel prices stay relatively affordable I will continue to feed it higher octane gas for better performance, which is really nice for the little "4 banger" with a big body wrapped around it. Purchased the extended warranty that'll go to 120K miles and just shy of a decade. I'm getting close to retirement and hope this is my last car. As my daily, round trip commute is under 20 miles I don't see me piling up the miles. I love this SUV and will talk your ear off about it if you'll stand near me long enough. If you're looking at SUVs in this class, do yourself a favor and test drive a CX-9. And if you do, don't forget to turn on Sport Mode for a bit to see if that'll tickle your fancy.

Concern for Choice Nullified After Purchase

Was a little reluctant to look at Mazda for a more luxury experience with a SUV. After test driving (more than merely around the block) it became obvious this was in the finals for a choice. Strangely my wife liked the comfort of the drivers seat as much as I did, considering our height difference. She did not like her last SUV because of the seating comfort (cut off circulation to her legs). Love the smooth and relatively quick acceleration, low noise level, and comfortable suspension. Lots more perks than we expected, most of which are actually useful and friendly to learn how to use. It just feels good inside! I actually feel safe driving it, which says a lot considering my primary transportation is a full-size pickup truck.

2019 model further enhanced the refinement

I have a 2018 CX-9 signature loaner for a weekend while waiting for my 2019 CX-9 signature to be delivered. Once I received my 2019, I found many changes that fine-tune this great vehicle ever further. For example, the parking assistance changed from showing red bars warning graphic on the screen to a front facing camera view and a 360 view. The sides mirrors is now power folding automatically when you walk away from the car with the key fob. The map / reading lights change from push-able plastic cover lights to the airplane-style, separate power button and LED spotlights. CarPlay / Android Auto is a big plus as well! The 3rd row seat is actually comfortable for adult. The only thing I don't like is the small center compartment. Overall, this is a great SUV.

This SUV is an absolute blast to drive. Quick response from the 2.5 turbo engine, definitely drives like a sports car and the highly bolstered seats give you a feeling that you are being cradled in safety and luxury. Interior appointments are luxe and easy on the eyes. Gas mileage is a disappointment but I’ll get over that for the experience of this ride. Captains chairs in the second row are fantastic. The stereo by Bose is top notch! Looks and feels like it costs much more than I paid for this version, the Touring with premium package.

We needed to add a third vehicle to the household and test drove many vehicles including the Forester, Honda Passport, Kia Telluride, CX-5, Subaru Ascent and the Santa Fe. Overall we liked the CX-9 the best based on driving dynamics, power delivery, luxury look inside and out, and it’s uniqueness overall. We did not need a third row or a ton of space so it was perfect for us. 8/15 update: We still very much enjoy our CX-9. Our one complaint is the slow entertainment system.

The CX9 Touring with Premium Package I have is perfect for my family. I've been driving it to work since buying it and absolutely love it. I love the exterior lok in machine grey and the interior. It drives beautifully. We have room for my family and I don't feel like I am driving a brick on wheels. If you are tall and have lots of kids this car is probably not for you. I personally didn't want to buy a tank that could fit a village. I just needed a car that fit my wife and 3 boys (who were on the verge of killing each other when sitting all side by side).

Overall interior has quality leather not sure on the mm thickness but it is not thin. On both the doors and seats which to me means it’s built to last. The only down fall I believe is the leg room horizontally from the knees. It has a coushin on the center counsel but not the door trim panel. Definitely not the same space as an American build. To me that is the only downfall thus far. The luxury is there and the affordability aswell. Driving in the cruise control mode is great, slows down automatically if someone breaks or slows down infront of you. This technology is new compared to the earlier generation styles of cruise controls. I have less then 1k miles on mine so far so good let’s just wait to see what happened under good care.

I searched for a couple of months for an SUV; test drove all a couple of times until I narrowed the choices to Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade and Honda Passport. Each had pros and cons. I removed Telluride because it was too difficult to get. I liked the Honda but wasn’t completely sold. Reading reviews from many sites and the Mazda CX-9 kept being mentioned so I decided to test drive the Grand Touring. The ride is smooth and quiet, nice handling, great pick up , it has somewhat good of a sporty feel. It’s actually fun to drive. The seats are really comfortable. Interior really nicely done, tech and safety features very good. Bose sound system is great. People complained third row small but I didn’t expect anything different. However, I am able to get in and out easily and there is sufficient leg room (I’m 5’ 4”). There are just a couple of things I’m not crazy about: the drink holders in the center sit too far back that I literally have to bring my arm back to reach my drink. I guess if you’re tall it wouldn’t be a big deal. I use the one in the passenger side which does help. I’m used to SUVs that have the exterior mirrors that tilt down when you’re backing into a parking space which makes parking so much easier; this car doesn’t do that. I’m would have been nice to have a panoramic sunroof but I knew it didn’t when I bought it and it doesn’t take anything away from everything that makes the CX9 a great choice. And lastly it takes premium gasoline which is quite expensive. These are minor cons for such a great vehicle. I love it and I’m not easily pleased when it comes to vehicles.

Update May 2020: Center console piano black and chrome trim is too brittle and scratches/chips very easily, so annoying, looks great in showroom but not functional. Also, side plastic piece ear seat beat release chips and pits when seat belt is released. C'mon Mazda these are easy fixes. Had a 2007 Honda Pilot with 220,000 miles on it and it was time for a replacement. Didn't plan on buying a Mazda. Test drove Acura MDX and RDX, Honda Pilot Elite, Toyota Highlander and Rav 4, Lexus RX350 and GX460, Subaru Outback 3.5 six cylinder, and Mazda CX-5. (No Audis or BMWs for me--been there done that with the high repair bills and sticker prices.) Anyways, nothing matched the Mazda CX-9 in handling, acceleration, cornering, shifting, braking, comfort and overall driveability. Hands down winner. Car is also beautifully designed inside and out. I like the Grand Touring model better than the Signature; I'm not a fan of the reddish nappa leather with the Signature. The "black" leather with the GT model is more of a very dark gray matted leather and not the shiny black leather found in other SUVs. Apple Car Play is nice and just takes some time getting use to--satellite maps feature on Google Maps looks sharp. Bose sound system is top notch. Numerous safety features. Wish remote start was standard and also started the heated seats and steering wheel. Third row seat may be tight if you're over 5'10"/hefty. Got a nice discount on price along with the 0.9% financing. Highly recommend.

The technology is cutting edge and the styling superior. I just took my new one on a 1700 mile trip and loved it. It is on the narrow side for a young family for sure. That is the only drawback I see in general. It is very quiet and tracks well on the road. Great for us folks without young children. A value in it's class.

Best Driving Vehicle that I have Ever Owned

I started looking for a new SUV back in June as I had a lease vehicle with a contract soon to expire. I test drove the Palisade, Telluride, Explorer, Highlander, Grand Cherokee, Passport, Blazer, and Traverse. The Palisade, Highlander, and Telluride were high on my list because these vehicles had overwhelmingly positive reviews. However, they were ALL too expensive. I previously owned a Highlander and was disappointed the new XLE had faux leather seats. I found this to be unacceptable for a vehicle that costs upwards of $45,000 dollars. Same story with the Ford Explorer which I thought drove incredibly. Not only did it have faux seats (XLT), but there has been a number of stories in print and on Youtube about transmission and other problems. The Grand Cherokee had poor safety ratings (IIHS-HLDI). In my area, only high end Palisade's and Telluride's were generally delivered to lots. My budget was below 40k, so that wasn't going to work for me. The CX9 wasn't on my radar but it came up on just about every best midsize suv website that I looked at. I test drove it and the rest is history. I purchased the Touring trim level with premium package. It has everything we need and literally drives and feels like a luxury car. It's just me and the wife so we didn't need a large suv or a third row for that matter. As such, we'll keep the third row seats down because the extra cargo space is more important for us. I highly recommend this vehicle for small families, it's a really great car with exceptional safety ratings.

We just purchased our 2019 grand touring awd. It is replacing a 2016 grand touring cx9 that was totaled last week in a head on collision. From a safety standpoint, I would like to remark on this vehicles superior performance. I was traveling at 40-45mph when a white Prius crossed a double yellow line straight into my grille. With no time to react and break, I am lucky to be alive. On top of that, with the exception of a friction burn from my seatbelt and some pain in my back, my injuries are minimal. It is worth noting that the Prius driver survived the crash, however, the was nothing left of his front end. Ther majority of the cx9s noise was in tact. Sadly, all her fluids spilled out with a running engine rendering her totaled. My favorite vehicle I've ever driven, and I was raised in Audi's. Update: our 2019 now has 40k miles. I still look forward to driving! We've had no mechanical issues, just routine maintenance. We replaced the tires and love the car more than ever. It's great in the snow and does awesome on mountain roads.

The test drive proved this care to be a #1 choice for an SUV of its class. The exterior and interior styling is stunning. My only observation was the narrow leg space in the front cabin, I have problems with disabilities (my right leg and hip) any long distance drive would be very uncomfortable for me.

I had a 2010 CX9 Grand Touring, so getting the 2020 was a no-brainer, especially given the good reviews the 2020 has received. I like the Grand Touring trim because everything (NAV, sunroof, blind-spot monitors, power liftgate etc.) is standard, and the only options I had to think about were the all-weather mats and a a roof rack. The 2020 also packs some neat things like lane departure warning systems, front cameras and windshield display, that also includes local speed limit information. Despite this one having a 4-cylinder engine (the 2010 has a 6-cylinder one), it is very peppy and the ride is smooth and comfortable. I have driven about 100 miles on it so far, and I have loved it! Only one issue: Like the 2010, this one also comes with 20" wheels, which means that if you're an avid skier and plan to drive in snow country with snow chains, this trim won't be for you. The larger rim means that there is not enough clearance for the chains. This is not an issue for me, since I do not live in the snow belt, and the rare time I do go into the mountains, I do not go when it snows.

We weren't in the market for the fanciest trim. We absolutely required AWD. The motor, transmission and excellent brakes fit our needs perfectly for our mountain roads and unpredictable winter weather. Cargo space, especially with the third seat folded down, more than meets our requirements. This vehicle is tight, polished, comfortable, economical for its size and drives like a much more expensive SUV. Very impressive for a base trim level car.

After having a Toyota Sequoia, Toyota Highlander and Toyota Rav 4; I was very undecided for my next car. I knew I didn't need it so big anymore because my kids were grown and rarely ride in my car but I also knew I didn't want it small like the Rav4 because when we are all 4 in the car plus our two golden retrievers; I needed a third row. So I looked and looked for months. I test drove the Mazda cx9 and immediately fell in love with this car. It drives like a small sportscar. My car is black with sand interior/touring with prem package so i have capt seats. The space to walk through to the third row is very small. My dogs have a very hard time fitting through the captain seats. One thing I can not stand on the car is that the signal to change lanes lights up on the side mirrors and it is distracting with the Blind Spot Monitor when that lights up at the same time. It is very distracting. Another reason for the four stars is the air conditioning. I find it to be a bit weaker than other cars. Also not loving the center knob that controls the screen. It is not a touch screen unless you are stopped or going less than 5mph. But other than that I absolutely love driving this car. Very smooth. Great acceleration. Great gas mileage so far.

Really a beautiful car inside and out. And it drives really quietly and smoothly. Not a ton of power, but it does the job. The 4cyl will increase the gas mileage, but you don't feel the torque and power that you would in a Land Rover or a Volvo XC90. I'm 6'2" so one small issue for me is that my legs don't stretch out so much in this car. I could have more legroom if I bring my seat back, but then the passenger behind me suffers. The reason I've given it 4 stars is the ugly, clunky, inelegant, and stupidly-designed entertainment/navigation system. -- I've had the car a year now - absolutely no issues whatsoever. Gas mileage is not great, it's not a powerful engine, it's a bit cramped in the back, and the entertainment/navigation system is incredibly stupid. Otherwise, I still like the car!

I bought my 2019 CX-9 over the available 2020 because I didn’t want the rear captains seats but I wanted the upper trim level. The 4 cylinder turbo engine is surprisingly more then enough power for everything I do. All of the tec is great but I give the navigation less then ideal. I’m always overriding it and it’s very limited when driving. What’s with that? The intuitive cruise control is awesome. The breaking is 10 stars! Fuel mileage is mediocre and sometimes with my right foot prevailing over my brain it can be less then mediocre. I drove all of the competition before buying the Mazda and this one was the best IMO, except I did not drive the Hyundai. If you don’t need the 3rd row which I don’t, look at the CX-5. Better mileage. 10” shorter but identical in every way. I would go with the CX-5 next time. Overpriced Euro competition is pathetic....Toyota and Honda’s...both mediocre too.

This is my first Mazda. I was considering a Honda Pilot or Kia Telluride before finding the CX-9 Grand Touring. I had a manual Subaru Impreza before this car and really enjoyed feeling engaged with the road, so I was looking for something that could offer the same, but fit 6-7 people. This car is spot on, it’s true what others have said; good power, firm balanced handling, well appointed interior and good looks. The reliability is also a big plus. I thought it had all of the needed features plus a lot of extras that I liked. Here are my thoughts after driving home 200 plus miles. Starting in a city and finishing on top of a snowy mountain with dirt roads yesterday at night. I’m 6’3 and 220 lbs. I had plenty of head room (which can be tough to find), the seats were supportive and comfortable, the instruments were all easy to reach and understand. I was disappointed the heads up display was a little hard for me to see (to tall) until I got my seat to really lean back. It’s a very useful system in traffic with blind spot monitoring. Adaptive cruise control was smooth and efficient. The transmission performed well, no unnecessary shifting and smooth. Plenty of power. The safety feature weren’t to intrusive. The headlights were bright and great around dark corners. I forget the features name, but they turn a little to help you see around a corner. I tried to get it to slide a little and the AWD and traction control added just the right amount of correction. It drove well in the city and the back country roads. Last couple of thoughts, the trunk space is small with the third row up, no surprise there. You may not need the third row up all of the time and that would solve the issue. Or get a cargo carrier for above or on back. Far cheaper then a bigger car. The sunroof is small, almost cute, but it’s a feature not a necessity. It’s turbo charged BUT can use regular or premium. You lose 25 hp and 10 pounds of torque with regular. The fact that it isn’t just premium is a big plus. I’m going to see if the backup camera has a couple of settings. I thought view could be a little better. You definitely need it with that 3rd row headrests in the way. Overall it was a great start to owning this car. Mazda has made a well thought out vehicle.

I absolutely LOVE my CX-9 Fwd Grand Touring SUV. Not only is it fun to drive, it's also loaded with safety features. There's the heads up display that's adjustable on the windshield as well as blind spot monitoring, rear and 360 degree camera and adapted cruise control. The engine is responsive and the vehicle lacks any major body roll, which is fantastic for any SUV. High class luxury for a bargain price. Plus, you don't look like every other SUV on the road.

The vehicle is a great value. But those who plan to lease should review carefully Section 26 of the Mazda Financial lease agreement. It prohibits taking the vehicle to Canada without prior written permission. And, perhaps more important, only the name lessee(s) may operate the vehicle.

We decided to drive one after reading all the good reviews in Car and Driver, Edmunds and Consumer Reports plus some YouTube videos by some car experts. We bought the CX-9 Touring and have been extremely happy with it so far. The CX-9 handles like a smaller SUV so you don't feel like it's too much car for you. It has great acceleration thanks to the Turbocharged 2.5 liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 227 horsepower on regular or 250 horsepower on premium. The interior is also beautifully well done and all the controls are conveniently located. I would recommend the CX-9 for anyone who would like the handling and features of a luxury SUV without the big price tag

I have not come across perfect car yet, everyone of them has stupid minor annoyances. sometimes i wonder if cars are being designed by real people for real people.. having said that, CX-9 is mostly fine, especially for the price. I was not able to fine better combination. (no, I am not paying $650/month for Kia) power is good from 4Cyl, all safety features work as advertised, it's reasonably quiet and comfortable (comparing to my other ride 2019 BMW X5). Space is good for us. Now, here is what keeps it from 5 stars for me 1. Freaking driver memory buttons do not adjust mirrors. we switch drivers ALL the time and manually adjusting mirrors every time is huge annoyance. 2. to the idiot who thinks that disabling touch screen while driving is a good idea.. you sir is a moron. My eyes are off the road 10 times more to check if proper option is selected via the control knob. idiotic feature. Instead of looking once and touching screen once.. it takes much much longer to get to the right feature. 3. 6 speed tranny is fine for driving around town but lacks on hwy...RPMs are way to high at 75-80 making for more noise and killing fuel economy. 4. why why why did they have to bury tow hitch electric connector so far back that it requires taking 1/2 car apart to get to?? 5. generally speaking electronics/entertainment system feel past decade. C'mon, cant add higher resolution cameras?? make it all a bit faster? so yeah.. relatively minor gripes, 3rd world problems, but they keep this car from being great. 1/2 year update. my original impressions of the car remain unchanged. It's a very decent daily driver / family hauler with minor things keeping it from being totally awesome. 1 year update. no changes really. My original gripes remain.. reliability is solid so far.

2016 not 2019

Best car I ever had. Mine is a 2016 Grand Touring which is basically the same as the 2019 minus some electronic gadgetry. The upgrade to Grand Touring or Signature is advised as the standard equipment on them is wonderful. The adaptive headlights and the heads up display are terrific but not available on cheaper models.

Info-tainmemt/ dash screen cracks and expensive to replace. Temperature gauge/ A/C malfunctions. Wait for parts several months and problematic for dealerships to diagnose and properly repair. Very $$$$ to repair.

Love the car, love the features, the only issue is my wife is short and there's blind spots for her when changing lanes.

No, but I look and feel the part in this thing. I bought the AWD Touring with the Premium package and that addressed all of my practical needs. I didn’t get the Edmunds discount. I paid 40,850 (0.9% apr). In a word the CX-9 is luxurious and i love it for that. It’s quiet (inside), powerful and responsive so far and I’ve been able to reliably maintain an average 24.8 mpg in Las Vegas using either regular or premium in mixed driving (mostly highway). I could list like 3 nitpicks if i needed to write a balanced article but all i think is worth bringing up is the entertainment interface and the inability of a passenger to add a Bluetooth device while the vehicle is moving. That and this system’s inability to read FLAC or Apple Lossless music files via USB. Apart from that I’m thrilled by the car’s inability to look or feel lame!

Love My CX-9

I've owned several Mazda products and liked all of them. True story: When a driver tried to cross a highway that my daughter was traveling on, doing 55-60, things didn't go well. She barely had time to hit the brakes when impact was made. The little CX-5 took the brunt of the impact and although my daughter had to kick the door open, she walked away. Even the highway patrol was amazed she was not injured more than she was. So, sold on safety we went for a CX-9. I got one used with under 17,000 miles in great condition. I was a little afraid of how it would handle because I've always preferred smaller, sportier cars/SUV's but I was instantly in love. The turbo is a great feature, there is no hesitation, and you have plenty of pedal. (Something I had to use Sport Mode in my 2016 CX-5 to achieve.) I'm actually almost afraid of using Sport Mode in the CX-9, and really find no need for it. I see a lot of people talking about the third-row seat, and my 5'9" daughter tried it out. She found it easy to get in and out and would ride back there anytime. So, I guess it depends on expectations, it certainly is not the third row my brother's older Expedition has but seems sufficient for two adults. I too have noticed that the A/C and heating is a bit slow, but nothing that really bothers me. I love the handling, the comfort, the quiet, the great sound system. I will always miss my little CX-5 (RIP Pretty Baby, thank you for saving my daughter) but am very glad I decided on the CX-9.

I loved my time with my 2019 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring but I was fortunate enough to take advantage of the increased value on used vehicles and I traded in my CX-9 for the 2021 Hyundai Palisade Limited. The Palisade is a little wider and a bit more comfortable for me. I’m a well built 6’3”, 315lbs., former football player and avid weightlifter. I would recommend the CX-9 to anyone. It’s a great a SUV, especially in the upper trim levels, Grand Touring and Signature.

I have been driving three different Suburbans since 2000 and my youngest child just got her license, so I decided to go with a smaller SUV. We looked at the Lexus RX and the Highlander as well. The Mazda was so fun to drive, has every tech detail I wanted, and edged both other vehicles out on price. I have never owned a Mazda so I’m hoping that their new, improved reliability ratings hold true. I drive at least 35k per year. We prefer a second row bench so we went with the Grand Touring AWD. The wood trim in the Signature was just beautiful though!

We have had our 2020 Signature for several months now and 10k miles. Drove the vehicle 2400 miles to Florida and back over the winter. Vehicle is a great highway cruiser. Once you get seats adjusted are very comfortable for long trips. No problems with being a 4 cylinder....with 320lbs of torque feels like a 6 cylinder up to around 70-80. Pros: quality build. excellent ride quality, very quiet, doors have a very solid "thunk", high class interior materials, rear seat captains chairs with console separation is very high-class limousine like, doesn't drive like a big suv, wide 255 tires are standard and help the good handling of this big vehicle, good turning radius, adaptive headlights are a plus, design stands out from all the boxy looking competitors, you seem "connected" to this vehicle and it is very enjoyable to drive. Cons: technology needs updates....can't check tire pressure or oil level through infotainment system, old fashioned prop rod to hold hood, no puddle light option, interior ambient lighting is weak, can't lower windows through key fob, no panoramic roof option, no wireless carplay, ac power outlet location is awkward, key needs redesign (push tabs too small), vehicle came equipped with low rated Falken tires, could use another gear as 80 mph is at 2500 rpms. Mileage averages 20.5 city, 25.4 highway. Larger families who need a lot of trunk space for family vacations and hauling soccer teams/balls can probably find a better option but if you place a premium on "the driving experience" and appreciate a premium looking inside and out vehicle, this is a great choice. Overall, very satisfied with purchase. update june 2022: even though they don't get good reviews, our Falken tires have been fine...wearing good, still quiet, and been through heavy Florida downpours with no issues. Now 15K on vehicle and no issues.....still an overall 5 star rating. update 12/24: we still have vehicle with 45k now. replaced battery a couple months ago. will need to change brake pads soon. otherwise no problems or issues.

Love just about everything on my CX-9 except that I never got the gas mileage that was advertised. Best was 25 mpg. Also they don’t appear to hold up in value for trade in. I was interested in trading up for newer different color CX-9 and insulted by how much it dropped an value after only several months.

This by far is the best styled SUV and the lines, interior, sporty feel and handling is very nice. Plus, it has the room needed for family trips. However, its quiet ride does not distract me from the seats that need more cushion and comfort for the long haul. Mazda is know for its sport like drive, and this Cx9 doesn’t disappoint, but when it comes to this dipping into luxury, I expect way more comfort. It’s competitors have way more comfortable seats that are a must for long drives. My shoulders and back hurt after every long trip. Head rests do not adjust so you’re left with not much flexibility in positioning for comfort. And it should have a bigger arm rest between the front seats. Purchased this CX9 Touring in 2017 with 300 miles. Only maintenance so far are oil changes and brakes. The infotainment screen cracked ( a known issue by Mazda ) after fussing they replaced it at no charge. I’m ready to get out of it for something more comfy for long trips. The problem is finding something with its style and class and sport speak and fun drive. I’m sure I can find something way more comfortable but the style I must admit is second to none.
