Built like a tank
Before purchasing I tried a few other SUV's, none matched the handling characteristics of the Mazda. The vehicle feels planted on the highway during the worst weather conditions. At first the firm ride was a concern but it isn't meant to be a Town car. A firm ride is the trade off enabling the vehicle to perform more like a passenger car. No doubt you're aware of its size when behind the wheel but it drives like a smaller vehicle.
Love the CX-9
After owning several unreliable Jeep products, I decided it was time to try something new. Enter 2014 Mazda CX-9. This is quite possibly the nicest car I have ever owned. It is lovely to look at. Fun to drive. Has loads of cargo space. The most crucial consideration for me was the AWD feature. I outfitted the CX-9 with Blizzaks for the winter. I have already taken this car on treacherous journeys. The CX-9 is a tank. Combine the outfitted CX-9 with a little common sense and you will go anywhere.

A overall great suv.
Well lets start with the fact that i went from a 2006 BMW x5 to my 2014 cx9. The X5 was great for what it was. The CX9 is better for what i wanted. The CX9 is much comfier. It is adequately fast and adequately nimble. The X5 was way faster, more nimble and could break alot better. But its ride was extremely uncomfortable owing to all the sportiness of the vehicle. I enjoy the cheaper gas and the better mileage in the cx9. I enjoy the quiet comfy ride that is light years beyond my x5. The navigation in the CX9 does realtime traffic (with no subscription)... which i didnt expect or maybe that was something the dealer got for me since i got it as an add on. 4000 miles, so far so good
Technology incompetent
The SUV is very comfortable, quiet, stylish and spacious. It's fun to ride even on long trips. Love the look & feel. CONS: Fuel economy - it doesn't give the listed fuel economy; couple of mpg less. Bluetooth - if I had my phone on before starting the SUV, it will transfer the phone call, but will cut in & out. USB/iPAD - always starts in the first song - doesn't go back to the song that you were listening to before. Hate the GPS.

The makings of greatness
Overall I rate the vehicle very well. With a few tweaks this could be the perfect vehicle for families with 3+ kids. It has tons of cargo space for three active boys and all their gear. The three rows are spacious and even my oldest likes to ride in the back and has plenty of space. It is a very sharp looking crossover with a European style that I find very appealing. The interior is sporty and has nice finishing touches and it drives and parks like a much smaller car. It's nice not to have to drive a massive 9 passenger tank to fit the family and gear. However, the vehicle has a couple of quirks that I would like to see fixed if were to purchase a newer model in the future; wind noise around the side window frames is quite loud, transmission leakage, fuel economy is sub-par and equal to my full size pick-up, the tech is really sub-par and glitchy bluetooth interactions with phones and devices, and the head rest on the third row seats prevent the seats from folding flat without moving the second row forward a bit until they drop into place (this makes it a two-man-job or walking around the vehicle). As I said before, I really like it. I just want to see a few updates that would make it great for most families.

A Great Vehicle, Except for the Mileage
I'm in the final couple of months of my 39 month lease. My CX-9 has been absolutely flawless in comfort, interior cargo space, handling and mechanicals. The only thing I can't live with anymore is the mileage. My average has never risen above 18.3 MPG in three years, at least according to the dash readout. I had expected better, but that is my only disappointment.

Water pump failure is a major issue
Purchased a used 2014 model year with 100k miles. Less than a year and 4K miles later, the car failed while driving with loss of steering power. Did some research and learned that this is due to water pump failure and that this is ranked #1 issue with this car. Apparently there is a class action lawsuit against Mazda on this very issue. The water pump is located in a difficult place so a local Mazda dealer quoted $2,300 for the replacement. The car itself is very nice, but I felt compelled to write this review based on my experience, so that hopefully others won’t go through what I went through. Losing power and steering while driving was very scary. If you are going to get it used, highly recommend you get an extended warranty. However, looking back, if I had known a possibility of a car losing power and steering while driving, I would not have purchase it even with an extended warranty. Serious accident could have occurred, such as veering and hitting an oncoming car. Trying to steer without power is extremely difficult.

Th CX 9 Has No Idea its a Utility Vehicle!
This is my second one (first was a '10). The fun factor is off the scale. Maintenance schedule presumes we all live in a dusty choking climate with a 4 month oil change - according to my dealer. Otherwise it has been fine, and needed nothing in the first couple of years. It is a pleasure to report that neither of my CX 9's required a trip back to the dealer to correct things from the factory. I knocked it a star for tire/road noise (common complaint on line) which is significant. The brakes are much better than the '10 - however, my wife's car is from Germany (!) and its all about braking. So in comparison it gets a ding. Overall, I must say that were I replacing this vehicle tomorrow, I would absolutely head for the row of CX 9's to pick my color! This is pretty amazing. I'm ask to update my Rating at a time that is perfect for me. Unfortunately my 2015 got "t-boned" and while the repairs were perfect, I had gotten interested in the turbo, and some of the goodies Mazda had added. My dealer made me a great offer, and I wound up in a 2018 Signature model. All I can say about that is WOW! I have about 4000 miles on it, and it's a great vehicle. Hard to believe I've had three or these, and they still perform, and excite just like the first one! Mazda has really worked hard to get this model into the premium class of family vehicles. I will admit that the turbo four, in normal setting, lags behind the 6 cylinder of the 2015. However, I am quick to point out that flipping the "sport" switch, changes everything! I promise this, you cannot drive this vehicle, and not like it!!

5 years and still strong
So after 5 years just did all around brake and rotors and 300 mile trip to Boston MA and only 58000 miles on the CX9. She was a beauty on the highway and the power is still amazing on the 3.7 V6. Love it and will not give her up. Lots of room for the kids and dog.

Excellent vehicle
I purchased this vehicle used (Touring trim, 2WD) in 2017 when it had 24,000 miles on it. The price I paid was excellent compared to similarly equipped competitors (Honda, Toyota). I'll get the standard criticisms out of the way first... This vehicle has a small touchscreen and hard plastics in the dash. My previous vehicle had hard plastics and no touchscreen (or even Bluetooth) so for me there was no issue. Once you get past these issues you have an excellent vehicle. I love that it drives sporty, gets about 20 mpg combined gas mileage in the time I've owned it, I carry 7-8 people (4-5 who are kids) without trouble around town, and most importantly it has been incredibly reliable. In fact, 50,000 miles of driving and not a single repair, ever. Only standard maintenance and this vehicle runs like a charm. I place a premium on vehicles that last without troubles. I also love the blind spot monitor and backup monitor. If function, reliability, good pricing, and sportiness are your priorities, this car will be great. If you want aesthetics like soft touches and great electronics, not so much. I chose the former but I can understand everyone has different interests with their vehicle choices. Overall, I highly recommend this vehicle. Best wishes on your vehicle selection.
100,000 and going STRONG!
I did have problems in the beginning but the comfort and ease of driving this vehicle made me glad I hung in there with my Mazda CX-9. I am a senior driver and comfort and ease of handling, means everything to me. I stop having back pain after only a few weeks of driving this vehicle and I travel a lot. It is now getting much better gas mileage than it did earlier and I decided to keep it and not trade it in. Enjoying riding the grand kids around and can fit them on in that third back seat when I need it. For me, this is the only vehicle I ever owned that my back and legs are completely comfortable on long distance rides.

The only thing really bad is the gas mileage
We knew that gas mileage was not going to be good before we bought the vehicle, but we got such a good deal on it that it somewhat compensated for the additional fuel cost.

Basically an AWD car.
While the CX9 has a nice strong V6, it is far too delicately built to be classified as a 7 passenger "SUV". Loaded up with 2 adults, 3 kids and a bunch of gear, braking is downright dangerous. Had both rear wheel bearings replaced(at least under warranty), but then there was an off/on squealing from the rear. Reviews all comment on how well the CX9 handles for an SUV, an it does, because its really a big car, not an SUV. The most irritating locking system of any car ever made. I should have thought better when my wife asked the salesman when she first saw it, "Is this considered an SUV or a station wagon!!" After 2 years traded it in for a real SUV (Toyota 4Runner) and couldn't be happier.

Engine design flaw
I have owned my 2015 CX-9 for 5 yrs and loved it. I just paid it off six months ago and planned to keep it. However, unbeknownst to me, they designed the engine with the water pump inside the engine. If/when the water pump goes out it will leak coolant into your engine. No warning. I now have to buy a new engine since the water pump leaked coolant into my engine and it seized up while I was driving on the freeway. Check engine light came on and w/n 20 miles the engine was toast. I was on my way home from work heading to the mechanic shop to have it checked out.

Toxic Fumes Fill Car when Impending T-Case Fails
The CX-9 at first seemed to be a great car, very roomy and fairly comfortable. Fuel economy seems to be low for the size of car, averaging only 14-16 in-town, and 18 on the highway. The biggest challenge, and reason for the bad review is the Transfer Case. I have found several other reviews, matching this issue, and as far back as 2011. The transfer case failed at 12,500 miles, and filled the car with toxic oil fumes from the gear oil aspirating through the venting system. My wife and daughter got sick, and had respiratory issues through the evening and night. The technician informed me this was a known issue with the CX-9, and they have new T-Cases on hand due to how many they replace. The tech also informed me that this happens frequently at even a lower mile range, sometimes as early as 3,000 miles. Customer service was completely accepting of responsibility, and attempted to down play the "known" part of the issue. Even though it is easily found on several review sites, and the dealer had recent examples to discuss with me while I was turning it in for repair. The toxic fumes filled the car within a few seconds, and fully engulfed the interior with a stench that has not come out, similar to cigarette smoke. On a smaller, and a much less horrifying note, the Blue Tooth in this car takes up to five minutes to connect. Very poor blue tooth system.

Mazda CX9 has issues
The Mazda is parked in my garage and I drive my Tesla. The Mazda never got close to the mileage on the window sticker as I get combined 12.7 mpg. I only keep the Mazda in case I need to move something that doesn't fit in my Model Y. Gas is just too expensive. Buy a Tesla as I have had no issues. If you enjoy taking your car to the dealer for repairs, then a Mazda is for you. My Mazda 2015 CX-9 has about 66K miles: It is now 10/27/23 and I drive this car less than a 1,000 miles per year. I bought a Tesla Y which is a great car. The CX-9 around town gets about 10MPG and in California gas is running close to $5.60 per gallon so the Tesla makes more sense to drive. I kept the CX-9 in case I need a second car. I am on my third set of tires already. My main complaint still is the really terrible build quality of the seats. I keep seat covers on the front so I do not have to look at the seats which wrinkled and looked aged soon after I bought the car. My second complaint is the attitude of Mazda corporate and the dealer in Torrance, who both resisted making necessary repairs and made excuses for the issues with the car rather than just fix it. Suggest you look elsewhere. *** History of issues: Driver's door handle broke Transmission oil pan leaked Rough idle (service manager told me it was my gas - NOT CORRECT) Poor gas mileage at 12.7 MPG combined and I drive it easy Front brake judder and the rotors were replaced twice. I had a third party replace ALL brake rotor/pads and I paid to do this while in-warranty as I became tired of Mazda's inability to fix the issue, eg local dealer wanted to charge me to test drive the car - go figure. I believe the OEM parts are defective. Head lights clear coat comes off (replaced head lights and clear coat still came off) Dealer claimed using regular engine oil voids warranty (it doesn't) OEM tires wear too quick, gone at about 20K Window runs on both driver and passenger doors failed and Mazda wants $600 to replace both (driver's side replaced at dealer under warranty and failed again after a year, I paid to have both replaced) Front seat leather? wrinkled. This is a common CX-9 issue and Mazda refused to repair the seats, offered a fraction of the cost to replace/repair the seats. Local dealer refused to correct the brake judder and leaking transmission during the warranty period and I had to travel out of my area to have the work done. Driver's side visor broke and it is expensive to replace. This was the first review: Issues that Mazda and its dealers have not corrected: Ongoing front brake judder that started before 12,000 miles and is still not resolved. Brakes make a grinding noise and the steering wheel shakes when going down hill and now the dealer wants $193 to just test drive the car once it passed the 12K mark. Three trips to a dealer to fix a transmission oil leak which is dripping and they state they can not find it but an independent shop found the leak in about 1 minute. Driver side window makes noises when it goes down and the dealer wants $129 to look at it and the car is under warranty. Both headlights were replaced when the clear coat came off. The Ford engine gets about 13MPG and shakes at idle. Dealer tried to put the blame on me for this stating I used the wrong kind of gas - it takes regular from the Chevron station down the street. Finally dealer admitted that the Ford engine has known issues. Rear door latch was fixed early on, then it is more or less broken again and dealer wants $125 to fix. The leather seats began wrinkling early on and Mazda fought me long and hard to save it self some money. Refused to fix the issue and gave me about a quarter of what it would cost to fix the seats as there is a suede like material in between the leather in the seats that wrinkled and could not be repaired without replacing the seats altogether. Dealer insisted that the 2015 CX-9 model had to have synthetic oil or my warranty would be voided. I called customer support at Mazda, told them that the manual states regular oil is OK. Mazda called the dealer and dealer agreed to use regular oil. Makes me wonder how many customers have paid for synthetic oil when they didn't need it as synthetic costs much more. Edmunds asked me to update my review about my 2015 CX-9 Touring. It now has about 60K miles. There has always been excessive wind noise at the window runs. The seats have a wrinkle issue that is getting worse and it really looks bad - I purchased full seat covers so I don't have to look at the seats. Gas mileage at 16.7mpg combined is low compared to what Mazda states it should get. The driver seat belt is not always retracting and the buckle gets caught between the door and body causing damage when closing the door (yes I clean the strap). I had the oil changed in the transfer case which is expensive as there is NO drain plug. Mazda will charge 1 hour labor. Suggest not to buy all-wheel drive ever as this Ford transfer case has a history of failing . If I had to do it over again, I would NOT have purchased a 2015 Mazda CX-9. I would have given more stars in the overall rating, however, my local dealer was terrible (declined to complete work under warranty) and many times I had to drive to the next closest dealer to have warranty work done. Also, Mazda itself never seemed concerned about the brake issues which is hard to understand after I called them multiple times. I regret I bought this car, especially when there are so many other choices. I bought a new car thinking I wouldn't be taking it in for repairs so often, however, this was just not the case with this Mazda.

A surprisingly nimble upgrade from the Mazda 3
There is so much great about this vehicle that I hate to nag about the few inadequacies and design flaws, but just to get it out there for discussion....For instance, I would like about 30 more horsepower on the acceleration. I like the extra interior width, but I miss the way the Mazda3 seats kind of hug you and make you feel secure. I don't like the way that the transmission downshifts to 4th gear when you are going over 60 and let your foot off the gas. It seems to assume you are entering an emergency slow-down mode..but I'm just trying to coast downhill for gas mileage...I'd be complaining a lot more if gas was still $4 a gallon. Even if I throw it in neutral at speed, it just doesn't seem to roll free as if there trans. is still engaged. It syncs with my Samsung G3 for music but fails to download texts...weird. Why does the stereo button for "seek Down" have the arrow on the RIGHT side of the button? Shouldn't it be on the LEFT edge? I can see why the $300+ storage area "cover" is not found on many of these, It just doesn't seem to fit and cover nearly as well as my friend's Tribute, which was what prompted me to order it...I am kind of disappointed with it. You can easily see behind the 2nd row even with the cover installed. I suppose they changed the way it covers due to the 3rd row of seats. The cargo cover is flimsy, not rigid like it was in the Mazda3. Also, it cannot be left in place when the 3rd row seats are up. I wish they had designed it so it could be parked behind the 3rd row of seats AS WELL AS the second row. Overall, it is so much fun to drive that I find myself always volunteering to drive when I go somewhere with my friends or family. It really amazes me how much it drives like a sports car...in the form of a bus...a little more HP and I could be convinced that it actually IS a sports car. The suspension is amazing! Paired with the AWD, I have applied modest effort trying to get it to lose traction with and without rain and have had no success...it just grips the road. Wish they had retractable running boards available for my mom to get in easier. My main reason from upgrading from the Mazda3, I sometimes travel weeks at a time for work (or pleasure), the storage space is fantastic! The storage flexibility of so many bi-fold seats is something I find incredibly useful. Thank you Mazda!

Easilly Comfortable
I like it , it is very nice handles very well so far only owned for a couple weeks. Only thing I wish is for better gas MPG but that's to be expected as it is a fairly large size SUV. Love it so far.

Luxury feel overall
SUMMARY: A true testament to a vehicle that hits the tuning sweet spot of suspension. As a first time Mazda CX-9 owner, the sporty yet luxury feel to the CX-9 is impressive for me and my passengers. We can actually have conversations at regular volume levels. I suprisingly look for ways to run errands and drive it more than any other vehicles I've owned. The CX-9 smoothly cruises in and out of highway traffic. You know a quality vehicle and suspension when you end up driving faster than you actually are. I always feel in control at highway speeds. It doesn't have an uncomfortable and unpredictable "float" to the ride as other SUVs such as my 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe GLS. The Tom Tom Navigation's input screen can be difficult to use when putting in destination addresses. The navigation does have an accurate (and free) traffic setting that shows "home to work" and "work to home" traffic with slow downs and construction clearly marked and continually updated. The bluetooth streaming audio connection is stronger and more like HD audio than other vehicles I've driven. The Bluetooth phone connection takes too long (30-45 seconds) to connect when starting up the vehicle which is frustrating. It even has a Pandora app built in which works perfectly. The climate control works great and I like the conveniently located (right behind the driver/passenger arm rest) 2nd/3rd row rear climate controls and the fan power can literally blow your hair like on a windy day. Passengers love it. The 3rd row has tolerable access with a side pull lever on both sides of the 2nd row seats. I chose the Grand Touring with DVD Player option (Grand Touring with sun roof isn't available with a DVD Player) and am glad I did. The kids watch the DVD player on a trip of any distance and makes it easy on parents that the kids have control of inserting the DVDs in the rear unit and not waiting for us to load the DVDs from the front. PROS: Handling, sporty styling, suspension, cavernous interior, all seating feels plush, DVD player, Bose sound system, navigation CONS: The 20" Grand Touring wheel package / low profile tires make the ride harsh on uneven pavement. On smooth highways, however, the ride is blissful and interior is quiet. Large doors require planned parking lot parking.

Amazing Vehicle
Great driving vehicle. I feel comfortable and secure on long hauls. Keeps up with everything on the road and is a good looking car. With the three rows of seats there is plenty of room for everyone. My wife drives an Acura MDX and and sees no drop off in comfort between the two.

Tech outdated, to much hard plastic on dash
We looked at these because of the closeout price, but they are just dated. Hard plastic, dated touchscreen, passenger seat too high, poor gas mileage - just too many knocks against it. Hopefully, the 2016 (2017) redesign will get Mazda caught up with the Edge and. Pilot

Had a Rav4 before this, and I thought I'd never be able to forget my Toy-ota.....boy was I wrong! Comfortable, great handling and power on longer trips cross state, haven't had a mech issue after 6 months. Have 2 kids and the car seats fit great, roomy, nice sound quality on the speakers. If you don't mind the gas price to fill this baby up, then it's a no brainer!
6 years, 85,000 miles
For its model year, this is a great vehicle. It lacks the soft-touch dash and door materials found in more recent models, but stands up very well to everyday use. Reliability has been great on this - only routine/standard wear maintenance other than an AC drain that has backed up a couple of times. It still drives more nimbly and tracks better than most recent SUVs. MPG is still 20-23 highway, which is OK for this class. It would probably ride a bit better with 18" wheels instead of 20" but is fine except on pretty rough pavement.

Bought something else
Test drove and investigated the 2015 CX-9 and decided to buy a 2013 Acura MDX for slightly less money. Acura's SH-AWD system and better road manners were the clinchers. The Mazda handled pretty well, and its features were nice, but the Acura had more technology and user friendly technology. Also the V6 in the Mazda is made by Ford (so I understand) and doesn't have the grunt of the Acura or the highway acceleration (50-70 mph). The Acura also seems to have more interior room and cargo space. Since we weren't really giving up anything in terms of features or performance we decided to buy the 2013 Acura (with less than 30K miles) with a year remaining on the factory bumper to bumper and two years on the power train warranties and save several thousand dollars.

Decent SUV - but wouldn't buy another mazda
My vehicle was purchased used at 126k in 2020. There were no issues the first 2 years of ownership. There bearings seem to wear quickly. I had my head gasket blow at about 150/155k. Also had to replace my alternator & radiator (at once). Spark plugs & battery replaced. All in all put more into the car than i would have liked. The bluetooth connection takes a bit longer than id like. Screen doesn’t auto adjust to external light anymore stuck on day and requires manual night mode change (when lights are in auto). City fuel is about 400-450km for full tank. Comfortable seats (front) but my spouse complains of limited head and leg room.
