CX5! A Great Replacement for the Jeep Cherokee!
We are totally impressed with our new CX5 after 5 months and 4,000kms. We owned a 2017 Jeep Cherokee Limited with all the bells and whistles and liked the vehicle. We wanted to upgrade to the new 2022 Grande Cherokee 2 row, but after waiting for months for one to arrive at a dealer, we started to look elsewhere. We considered the Honda CRV, the Hyundai Tucson and the CX5. In reading reviews, the CRV and CX5 were tied at the top of their category. The disappointment with the Honda is the stupid CVT transmission. The Jeep GC would be bigger but I’m so glad I bought the CX5. The dealer gave us a 2021 to test drive and warned that any speeding tickets we got would be our responsibility. Part of my test drive was on a 4 lane divided highway and after a kilometre or two, I looked at the speedo and found I was doing 130 km in a 100 zone. Whoa baby! This thing goes! Part of not realizing the speed was in how quiet the vehicle is with considerably less road noise than the Cherokee. Then we drove some back country roads and again was impressed with the handling, quietness and how well it absorbed the bumps. The body feels really taut, quiet and the steering is precise. We ordered the Candy Apple Red Signature 2.5 Turbo with all the bells and whistles. The down side was that we waited 3 months for it to come. This was perhaps more to do with the supply situation for almost everything after the CoVid situation. So it arrived and we were really impressed with the upscale model over the test drive unit. And it came in almost 20 thousand less than the Grande. The colour is fabulous and well worth the extra $400. It is interesting to note that the Turbo model works fine on regular fuel, but you do get more power with premium. I’m sorry! This thing has loads of power so I won’t be spending money on premium. The adaptive cruise is the default setting and it works great. It’s much smoother than the Jeep which had grabby brakes when approaching a slower vehicle. The Bose stereo is simply amazing! It is like you are in a concert hall no matter which seat you are in. We like the heads up display on the windshield. It was a bit distracting at first but having that information directly in front of you is a huge safety item. I did drive in 6 inch deep snow a couple of days and the AWD handled this every bit as good as the 4W Drive on the Cherokee. Our first and only longer trip was 608 km and it got 7.4L/100 km or 38.2mpg driving 10 km over the speed limit. This is very impressive for a vehicle of this size. Around town it is still impressive. Pros - Quiet ride, great handling and fun to drive - Premium interior - Seats are firm and comfortable - Great gas mileage - Heated and ventilated front seats and heated rear seats - Heads up display is super. It even displays nav directions, speed limits and stop signs. - One button switches the entire speedometer display from miles/kilometres - Bose stereo - incredible sound - Paddle shifting is very positive unlike the Cherokee which might as well not have it. - Auto door locks with mirror fold up when walking away - Adjustable height of the lift gate prevents hitting the garage door. - Wrap around below the doors keeps dirt and moisture away from the door sill. - Great headlights that peer around corners - Back up camera with 360 display - A golf bag actually fits across Cons - Oil changes every 8,000 kms versus 16,000 - Operating Manual is 724 pages with many duplicates and confusing sections. Add a 191 page Connect Manual, a 79 page Nav Manual and a 3 page Apple Car Play Manual. - Driver settings for the seats are only that. The Jeep adjusted seats, mirrors, stereo source and even stereo volume. - Apple Car Play is not wireless, a huge disappointment - Location of the Homelink buttons on mirror can accidentally bring garage door down when adjusting the rear view mirror.

Great Value - Comfortable and Fun to Drive
We had purchased 2019 CX-5 three years ago and love it. We needed to get a replacement vehicle for another car and started the search process again. We looked at the CRV, Rouge, Forester, Rav-4 and Tucson along with the CX-5. There are other options all have more cargo space and roomier back seats, but the handling, front seat comfort and features made once again choosing the CX-5 an easy decision for us. The 2019 version has been flawless, and we expect the same from the 2022 model. With AWD now standard, Mazda provides the best value compared to its competitors. I also wish that the gas tank capacity could have been increased so that fewer stops at a gas station are needed.

Jittery ride with 19 inch wheels
I love everything about this car except the suspension is too stiff… and I drove a Mini Cooper for years. The 19 inch wheels and tires on the signature are constantly busy transmitting every tar strip, crack, and bump. On the highway, the car never settles down. There’s a constant buzz and bobble through the body of the car and the steering wheel. For the record, my tires were road-force balanced, and are at the proper inflation. The car just rides stiffly. I wish I had picked it up on the test ride! That said, I found a set of Mazda 17 inch wheels and tires and put them on, and the difference is profound. It may corner a tiny bit less sharply, but I consider that a fair trade for dramatically improved ride comfort every minute I’m in the car.

I’m impressed!!
I traded my 2016 jeep Cherokee in for the 2022 Cx5. I saw the car at the Cleveland auto show and boy o boy was I impressed! For me it feels like a luxury suv but not for the price, my jeep was clunky the Cx5 premium plus feels great it’s firm/steady. It’s a much different ride compared to my jeep. I feel like I’m driving $$ it’s a perfect fit for me I don’t have small kids so I’m ok w/the space, it’s really just me. I pick up a few bags of mulch that’s about as much space I need. I’m ok with the infotainment isn’t touch screen. I appreciate the knobs being right under the arm rest very convenient as opposed to reaching forward. I really think I’m obsessed w/this SUV lol.
If it aint broke dont fix it !
I remember when the CX-5 was launched in 2014 and liked the engineering aspects associated with the "Skyactive" engine and transmission. Mazda did what few other manufacturers did which was take the existing combustion engine and gear-based transmissions and take them to the highest level of performance, reliability and efficiency to date, while staying away from using consumers as guinea pigs for hybrid drive or fully electric drive technology. The Skyactive engine has a 13:1 or 14:1(Europe) compression ratio which increases power and efficiency requiring the engine be built to higher tolerances similar to those of diesel engines and racing vehicles. The transmission is where we were sold as few manufacturers are still making a traditional gear-based transmission which gives the driver outstanding feedback and superior reliability. Most other vehicles have switched to the unreliable, irritating CVT (continuously variable transmission) which to me feels like I'm stepping on a sponge when accelerating. CVTs are less expensive to manufacturer and have fewer moving parts, thus cheaper to produce..but performance and reliability suffer. Mazda stuck by the reliable 6 speed gearbox and enhanced the wear parts and design thus making the transmission smooth, confidence inspiring and incredibly reliable. Many CVTs seem to just make it past the warranty expiration then - kaput -. So you end up with around 100k on a vehicle that is still running great ...but needs a new transmission- I suppose if you are leasing its not a longevity issue but it still effects the residual value. Not the CX-5,..... and this goes to the title of this review.( If it aint broke dont fix it )...Mazda started making the Skyactive system in 2014 and has done nothing to it each year except refining it and working out small bugs. I wont review the other parts of the vehicle as they speak for themselves, the fit and finish is second to none and Mazda as busted their hump to make what I believe is one of the all around greatest traditional combustion engine and gear based transmissions ever made. I've heard some mention of minor electronic issues ( entertainment system , navigation etc ) but thats the case on about every new vehicle. There are very few manufacturers which still invest in making the traditional drive engine and transmission and making it well. We feel fortunate to have found one in the trim level we like. If you feel you need more power...go with the turbo. If you think you need more space, go with the CX-9 or the new CX-50. They are fundamentally the exact same vehicle but the body is different. My guess is this traditional setup will not be available at any price from any manufacturer, in less than a year or two.

Definitely the right choice!
So I've been shopping for a new SUV for almost a year now, I've looked at everything from the Ford Bronco Sport to the Toyota RAV4. I decided on the CX5 premium plus and so far couldn't be happier! It's fun to drive, very comfortable leather heated and ventilated sears, a great sounding Bose sound system and on and on! Definitely check this one out.

The Right Choice
Just helped my in-laws buy the new 2022 CX-5 Preferred trim. I did a ton of research and Mazda came out on top for compact SUVs. it is loaded with all the safety features and fun to drive. In addition, the Preferred trim provides all the upgrades needed including full leather seats. I hope I get to borrow it once in a while!
All around winner
I ended up driving the 22 Carbon Edition for 20K miles before trading it in for a 23 CX-5 Premium. There were several factors - One was color ! We felt the Carbon Edition with red interior was very nice and ended up being to flashy for us- to much attention ,and it was no longer a unique color combination as Mazda just couldn't resist continuing to crank out that color on the CE and the new CX-50 and other Mazda's - blah - Mazda once did make special edition cars in combinations of color and trim and then that was it ,,,now if it sells they just keep cranking em out til buyer burnout happens- We also decided that Bose speakers and Paddle shifters were other options we wanted - The instrument cluster on the Premium is also a bit nicer than the Carbon Edition with more analog gauges. Also the 23 has about a 50+ mile range on the gas tank which is nice . Also the grill size was reduced looking more subtle and streamline. My 22 had some transmission sofware issues which was apparent from day 1 and got better , but it initally had a habit of not shifting into 1st at a stop and then after accelerating it would lunge back into 1st and it didnt seem right - I called my Mazda dealer and they said that's the way it is ? It went away - Then there was a jumpy feel when the car was at low speeds as if it was trying to find a smooth place- I solved that with premium gas . These were things that were common on very tight new cars and they did get better - then I had a knock noise in the suspension occasionally when going onto uneven drivewaysat an angle - Just one pop and gone ? Then nothing for weeks - Then again ? I went in for the scheduled 15K nut & bolt chassis tightening - paid by Mazda hoping it would settle the issue - It didn't and after the whole suspension seemed to " off " I would not do that again - _ I was not happy at this point knowing that I had minor transmission software issues, and the not so smooth drive at low speeds , now the suspension. I live in a state that comps you your sales tax from a year old new car to trade in on another new car..so I did it . I upgraded to a 23 CX5 - premium edition , which has to many things different to clog up the 22 review - so look for that review of the 23 vs 22;,,,,, I traded in the 22 CE for the 23 premium ..wow there was a HUGE difference and ALL those issues were solved as I demo drove it prior and it was like a BMW or MBZ - no lie - I'm not saying the 22 CE is a bad car as I loved it , but It seemed like there were some software issues and suspension tweaks that needed attention . MY wife said she noticed nothing ! So I, having had a plethora of new cars and many new Mazdas , am a bit more sensitive to minor things - Many people just fire up the radio and drive --end of story - no problems -- I dont do that - I drove in silence near walls and thru tunnels with the windows down to listen for noises . That said, Im sure that 22 will run for a long time with no issues . .

Transmission to be replaced after 3,500 miles
Transmission is defective on our new 2022 CX-5. Bought new and has been back to the dealer couple times to to shift issues we noticed at 2,000 miles. Mazda finally “approved” replacing transmission. Initially was told we would need to wait 5 to 6 months for it to be replaced under warranty but after we pushed they are now saying 5 weeks. Engine is weak and loud. Infotainment system is poor and not user friendly. Car looks nice and interior is nice. Will never purchase another Mazda again.
FROM GT 3 to CE 5
We have a 2010 Mazda 3 Gt 2.5 Hb and considered it the all around greatest car we have ever owned . With 145,000 flawless miles , it did all things very well yet none the best- ? Handling, reliability , fun , utility cargo/people hauling , cost to own , and still elevates my heart rate with each turn of the key . So attached we couldnt trade it in - Its a 12 year old car that looks as if it were designed yeaterday- Then I drive by my local Mazda dealer ....and they literally have ONE new car on the lot due to supply issues . Its a 2022 CX-5 Carbon edition with Red leather interior ...and the only question was ...is it avaliable ? - Yes it was just delivered and had 02 miles on the ODO ...and a big beautiful " J " at the beginning if the VIN #. 1 hour later ..rolling down the fwy in a car I never test drove or did a bunch of homework on and when home after a lengthy , every road everywhere Sunday drive - A huge smile was permannetly affixed to my mug - I then read the 2022 reviews - and they were all right - 5+ stars - and drives like a vehicle double the price ...and instead of other drivers responding to the envy/hatred associated with many european cars ....drivers would slow down and drop back to get a full 360 of this magnificent work of art ...the cistine chaple on wheels. These were not envyous haters ...they were gawkers of admiration ...jaws on the dash ....and nods of acceptance and wonderment . Mazda struck and minted a thing of synergistic beauty - that requires no ,research , no calculating , no comparing ...just the intuitive voice of conscience followed by the affirming experience of driving - silence is all that remains - because there is nothing more to say except - I will take it , and the thought : how fortunate am I to have this vehicle - looking in my rear view mirror at yet one more Japanese car dealer ....with NO new cars left on their lot .

The best car ever!
The car is very solidly made and beautifully designed. Everything is large, durable, of very good quality, pleasant to the touch and very nice. You can feel that this is a premium product in the full sense of the word, not only in terms of price. The car, design and equipment is very practical and thoughtful - someone devoted a lot of time, attention and heart to refine this car from all sides. I am personally captivated by the design - both external and internal, an amazing and very sophisticated combination of elegance, style and modernity. This is a level or two levels of design higher than other SUVs. Operationally, the car is very smooth and very high in every aspect, balanced to provide a very good overall impression, not just to focus on one aspect.

Nice, but not without compromise
Jumping from long ownership of Chevys and Lincolns. That brings ride stiffness to attention, also steering is very responsive, but twitchy for my taste. Corners can be taken very quickly with this SUV compared to competitors. Engine is very revvy and likes RPM, it lacks some power, but makes it up in responsiveness. Exceptionally well handling on the highway, super easy to get the car over limits and have A LOT of fun at it! Very good transmission, however feels a bit direct, like a manual… it is due to its design, not in the bad way though. Super quick to shift and get the car taking off. Sport mode in standard 2.5 gets RPM to 3k and makes car noisy with a raspy note, definitely not made to be used for prolonged periods. I keep getting around 28mpg hwy and over 30mpg on rural roads, even though it is AWD. Seats are comfy, however do not hold well in corners, yet car has the zippy image. Now the bad. One issue with car fixed on warranty. Roof rails cap cracked and started getting wind noise over 40MPH. Tech misdiagnosed it for bad differential, but once opposed, dealer involved another tech and got it fixed. Space, plenty in front… legroom in back is a bit tight and seat again does not hold well in corners. Infotainment… it must be a Mazda thing. Using radio/player is not intuitive and often needs direct attention for desired results. No touch screen takes time to adjust to the joystick. That includes CarPlay/Android Auto. Another personal annoyance is the thin steering wheel. Overall I think it was a good choice and I will be shopping Mazda when the time comes. Update: oil changed... that is all this car needs... :-)

6th Mazda - 1st CX5 Signature
Alas...a year ago in May, I purchased a 2022 CX-5 Signature. I was lucky enough to find it as a CPO with 6,000 miles...costing me $33k OTD. I was concerned about gas mileage, yet over 9,000 miles later, my average is 30.7 mpg. I use Mobil 1 Synthetic, & I use the steering wheel to drive for over 95% of the time. MRCC and traffic jam assist make this a very relaxing vehicle to drive, & whenever I do need to make a pass on the freeway, the power is always there. Sport Mode really does make this tall wagon feel like Touring Sporty Sedan, but mileage does drop a bit. Worth every penny. HD surround view is a feature I never knew I needed...but I do now. I already know this is the safest CUV I've ever owned based on me walking away without a scratch after a head on collision in my 2019 GT Premium CX-5. I hope Mazda continues the CX-5...even though it's a 10+ year model with a '17 & '22 refresh. It has aged so well...call it the CX-40 or whatever is necessary to keep this best seller for Mazda around for another 10 years.

No zoom zoom for me
3rd Mazda I've owned. Bought 2021 CX5 awd in Jan 21. Have 26 k trouble free miles on it already. Just got back from cross country trip from NY to CA and back. Avg. about 28mpg driving with a load and keeping up with the traffic. Sounds good so far. However, now for the reality. The vehicle is really uncomfortable for me and the wife. Seats have all the adjustments but none work for us. Maybe cloth would have been better. Sunroof and windows are useless when going more than 20mph as they beat you to death and make it so loud you can't hear the person next to you. I think the radio stinks and the controller in the middle to adjust anything on the dash screen is a nightmare. On a positive note the price was right for the vehicle and it has all the annoying safety nannies you could ever ask for. The hood on this thing weighs a ton and trying to get your fingers to the latch requires mouse size hands, and the prop rod never wants to come out of it's hole without a lot of frustration. The cargo area is on the small side but it has 2 big positives. It has a temp spare and it came with a nice cargo cover as part of the deal I made. Back seat room is also lacking if the front folks are bigger than 5'10. All in all the CX5 just is not the exciting thing I hoped it would be. One last good thing it has an auto tranny no cvt and that means a lot to me. To many gizmos that weren't thought out that well. So I'll rate it 1 zoom but definitely not 2 zooms.

Fun but make sure you fit
Great car but had to sell soon after buying. Driver seat too uncomfortable for long drives. If you are small no issue but if you have any size the narrow cushion along with the attractive design cause lots of pain along left leg. May not notice like me on test drives. Otherwise great car and value.

Not a family car
The car drives nice. And the safety features a great. The heads up display hud, was built more for a 6 foot tall person to see. I'm 5'4 and only see it if I'm in the up right position closely. To latch on the seat belt on the driver side I did have alittle bit of trouble. The center consul in the middle it a total waist of space. The trunk space was great for a family of 5. The front seat and back seat need more leg room. This Suv is not a good fit for a family of 5 with small and big children traveling.

Mazda- smaller Japanese company, top quality SUV
I’ve been a Toyota customer for over 25 years and I needed a small SUV right away because my Toyota had to go. All the Toyota dealerships in my city had no stock on hand and everything coming in was already pre sold. The waiting list on the RAV4 was several months for a gas model and over a year for a hybrid. I started looking at other vehicle brands, Honda, Nissan, Subaru and then I discovered MAZDA. Wow, after looking at all the competition in this segment, nobody even came close to the quality, refinement and performance of the CX-5. After doing a lot of research on the company and the dealership, I was sold and purchased a brand new 2023 CX-5 Signature Turbo. What a fantastic vehicle to drive. Inside the cabin, it’s like getting into a Lexus or BMW., the quality impresses you right away. I’ve had it for a week now, and absolutely love everything about it. It’s the perfect vehicle for my wife and I and our two small dogs, So glad that Toyota had no stock and we found Mazda. Zoom Zoom……

Purchased the black CX 5 Premium Plus today which is my second Mazda. Feels and looks expensive, and has every upgrade you can think of. So happy!
No zoom zoom
We have a 2022 CX5 it has had numerous transmission issues, little to no cabin heat in cold weather, and signal stalk has broken. Currently in at dealership for more transmission issues. It only has 6500 miles on it. But the dealer has been great, and gave us a new CX9 loaner..

The car is barely ok but the tech part is horrible
The car is okay, but all the sensors are like hit and miss, sometimes it couldn't sense anything and sometimes it just over sensitive, and all the sudden some of the sensors just come up with a message say it's not working (in a sunny day...)...The Mazda APP is the worse part, kept having issues, and every time when it stops working, I will have to drop it off in the dealership for at least a day... and consider that is the first year I have this vehicle, already tones of problems with it...really not recommended.

Mazda CX-5 2022 Turbo
I have a brand new CX-5 Top of the brand Everything on it. I have enjoyed it from the very 1st day I looked at this model. It gives me everything, power, great design, beautiful color in & out! Comfortable easy to learn all the new things and having the latest tech it's super fun! I have owned previous Mazda 3 hatchback I had that car for "18 years" it gave me a great ride, and has tons of life left in it, so I sold it and bought this one! I have been happy with Mazda from the beginning and I'm continuing that joy with my new one! The Dealership is great and I've been given great service over the years. But I started my connection in California and moved to Texas, and both places the Company took fantastic care for both myself and my car! I couldn't ask for a better built vehicle and the design of this is just as classy as my first one! MAZDA may not be a PORSCHE but it's design is just a pleasure to ride in and I'll get the PORSCHE for extra fun a bit later on. I definitely say to anyone looking for a vehicle that's great value and great looks along with a design that is classy! Take a ride in the CX -5 and see if you don't agree! They give you Top Quality and make the Higher Brand look twice at it's interior! You don't have to spend that money on a Name! You can enjoy this For Great❤️Value and design! And The Interior that is put together I think better than Higher Brand Car's that charge you way more only for a Name! Oh final word You are treated better by the service dept too.

Not What I Expected
We rented a CX-5 while on holidays. I was quite excited to be able to rent this vehicle. I picked a pretty Cherry red 1 out of the line up of different SUV's. It had beige leather seats, which added to the look. But my good feelings for this little SUV ended fairly quickly. It was very underwhelming to drive and to be a passenger in. The engine power just wasnt what were hoping for, not enough zoom zoom for me. The infotainment system left a lot to be desired, no touch screen. Not user friendly in any way. I never road in the back seat so I'm not sure about space back there. The cargo space behind the rear seat was adequate for our needs. 2 adults. I had considered purchasing 1 of these last fall. I test drove 1 then, but just wasn't wowed, so I thought I would try it again. Not sorry that I didn't purchase my own CX -5. Next time I rent a vehicle I will look for different SUV. It was no thrill, especially after all the hype about this vehicle.

Great suv, needs a little more of everything.
Always wanted the red signature model. Finally got a certified one. Lots to love about it. Quiet enough, drives great, nice to look at and keep clean(outside). Mazda needs to just fix a few details. Bose needs a little better output/sound. The dark brown seats are okay, but need a better color. Maybe match a color in the wood trim? Also needs some contrasting sticking. Not all the same color. Cabin is to dark. My old Mazda 6 is brighter and almost more appealing. Cubby areas in the back need to be more open so you can actually use them. The heads up display is great except it needs to have more lower adjustment. Door handles need active release like on the Mazda 30. Shouldn’t have to push buttons to get in. My old Prius had this over 10-15 years ago. Maybe the CX-50 has all of these issues addressed. Not a fan of all the new suede areas in your new models. How the hell can people keep it clean??!

WTF!
Lots of luck trying to DELETE an unwanted radio station. Over 2000 pages in the owners manual, and no explanation on how to change it. Trying to change any settings while driving this vehicle is next to impossible. The engineers who designed this vehicle had a goal...and that was to makeit as complicated as possible.

Disapponted
My 2005 Tribute died in May 2022. I'm a Mazda loyalist and thought nothing of buying a CX5. Loved my tribute HATE the CX5 -everything from the engine size and drive compared to my V6 to the fact there is no CD player. Hate almost everything about this car - drive, interior and exterior looks, features, engine, headlights, smell, etc. I was lucky to find one in stock, got a "good" deal at Sports Durst Mazda given current market conditions as in I didn't pay over sticker price but the car is a bit too fancy and I find myself trying to figure out how to drive it by all the alarms that go off. My biggest [non-permissible content removed] is the lack of a CD player and the difficulty of the info system. Would not buy again and contemplating a trade in next year when the market stablizes.

Needs a few more gears
Nice car with a rather stiff suspension with 19 inch tires. Thirsty on road trips if you travel over 70 mph, need to be able to drop rpm's below 2000 which a 8 speed trans would accomplish. Fine for two people but a little tight with four. Have had no problems. Acceleration is ok, but my 2013 v6 Accord is a rocket ship compared to my turbo suv and gets 34 mpg at 75 mph.

Mazda CX-5 Turbo
This car is perfectly styled with a luxury-lite feel and look. I have it in the Color Soul Red and it gets so many compliments with the black trim with the head and taillights. If this car was made as a hybrid it would be by far the best car on the market. The engine is very responsive and can get up and go very quickly. I live the heads-up display, the standard heated and ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats. One of the cons Is the gas mileage. I average 21 MPG and spend around $300 a month on gas alone which is like another car payment.

Decent but Traded Early Due to Some Shortcomings
Bought new in 2022, went through 3 batteries in 3 years and 22k miles and the dealer could never figure out why. Also, I found Mazda's controls for the radio and other electronics not at all intuitive - and actually infuriating at times. Finally, my better half thought the ride was too stiff compared to her Subaru Forester. The front seats are very comfortable on long drives though. I ended up trading it in for a new Forester which I feel has a much better ride and more intuitive controls and a touch screen.

All looks and no action
I really wanted to love this car. Its design is very attractive. That’s pretty much where it ends. It’s basically a go cart. Anything above 65 and it sounds like it’s struggling. I’m not an engine girl but also I don’t want to die on the highway. The reason for the 3 star is the amount of issues. It has had like 5 warranty repair visits (ac, computer) and I only have 39k miles. All in all, this car probably works for a non highway driver. I’ll be handing it down to my teen to go to and from school and practice.

Best middle CUV in Price/Quality
Mazda CX-5 Premium 2022, 16k miles. Best car in my life so far, i own this vehicle for 3 month, everything is great, only best emotions, good quality for this money, good MPG, awsome style, comfort and sound system. From first look 178 HP looksnot enough, but believe me this babe is fast, i recommend this vehicle if you are looking for good Middle size SUV with good quality, not for crazy money!
