Best compact SUV by a mile

The Mazda CX-3 handles better than any other car in its class. I test drove five other vehicles including the Mini, and the Mazda was easily the most fun to drive. My fuel economy to date has been excellent, better than expected. Seat comfort is very important to me for long trips, and once again the CX-3 provides very supportive and comfy seats that come very close to my old Volvo. Love this compact SUV and the high end feel inside and out.

Miata In CRV Wrapper

Oden Hoffer, 06/14/2019

If I had to choose one car for all around purpose, light duty, good gas mileage and over all performance, this car may be the one. I like the color and the fact that it's small, easily cleans and shines well. People have gone out of their way to approach me and praise the paint color. Passengers have complimented me on the ride. More importantly, I find it a comfortable and affordable vehicle to drive thus far. It is easy to enter and depart from. Front seats feel roomy for a small vehicle. In the GTX which I purchased is very comfortable and fairly quiet. The family enjoys the sun roof and riding environment and experience. I chose this vehicle because it was obtainable in my price range with an upscale package that included some accessories that are missing on many more expensive cars. Navigation, Lane Change Assist, Gravity Assist, Back-up camera with warning assist is just a part of the package. I have a twenty year old Miata and just replaced tires, brakes and plugs on it. It is still very dependable, but smaller and more cramped. I like the CX3 seating better for long trips. It is quieter than Miata, not quiet as good in corners, but darn close. I normally get better gas mileage with CX3 because I am more relaxed while driving. I like having the sport size platform of Miata, with some added head room and a little more living space. Although I average 31mpg, I often find my gas mileage about 41mpg. It seems best during sustained speeds of 60mph or less. Average mileage decreases with speeds over seventy. Twenty-seven miles per gallon is sill okay for speeds between seventy and eighty. Most of my driving is on rural roads.

What a fun to drive, safe little crossover

JTS, 12/08/2018
2019 Mazda CX-3 Grand Touring 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl 6A)

I've owned my CX3 for several months now and I find myself enjoying the drive more and more. Sure its small but you should know that in research. Test drive it. The car fits my family needs just fine. I'm 6' 2", my wife if 5' 4" and I have a 3.5 year old. A front facing car seat provide comfortable space for my wife and daughter. That was going to be the deal breaker. I wanted a small, fun car that I could drive in the winter. Already I've snagged a few small parking spots that others dare not. I've been averaging 33 MPG overall. Many times I hit 34/35 mpg for long drives. The car is responsive with the suspension being the start in my book. I like the slightly stiff feel which give an athletic sportiness. Also driving around the city it has a decent amount of pickup and just feels zippy. Flat out acceleration is not going to take your breadth away however. I just opted for the $399 android auto/apple car play upgrade which I consider a must. The entertainment now is complete and I used Waze and Spotify a lot. The trunk is quite small but I've managed regular grocery runs. This car is my commuter and option to take to Mt Rainier with AWD. I think the buyer should be in the marker for a small commuter, fun to drive that can seat adults in the back only on few occasions. Oh yeah and it happens to be the best looking small crossover period.

Happy with my choice!

Kelsey, 01/15/2019

I chose this car because of the price (especially 0% apr), AWD and comfort while driving. I dont have kids nor much use for my back seat, so the small backseat area doesnt affect me at all, and with the seats down there can be plenty of storage space. I haven't had any problems yet with the rain or snow, and feel much safer driving in those conditions than I did in my Prius! My one complaint is the small gas tank - although I get good gas mileage I find myself stopping to fill up for often than I would like. I love my seat warmers, climate control, bluetooth functions, safety and design of my CX-3.

The reviews are correct, this is a well styled and provides a snappy ride. The cargo and rear seat are small but that is fine, we use our truck for other things. This is for a commute and a fun drive on a nice day. It sure looks nicer than the competition in this class.

Best In Class

If your main gripes about the cx3 is no tinted windows and no remote trunk release, then you really don’t derserve to be driving a Mazda. The 2019 cx3 is without a doubt the best in the subcompact class for looks, drivability and handling, nothing comes close for the price. My only gripe is no Apple car play, which is an inexcusable omission by Mazda, but is said to be available at a later date though, so all is good. Highly recommended the 2019 Mazda CX-3 Sport AWD w/i-activsense pkg!

Pefect small sized SUV

Personally, I prefer a CX-3 rather than a CX-30 in terms of the size and fuel efficiency. Its basic trim also has the blind spot warning which a CX-30 basic trim does not have. It would be your perfect subcompact SUV if you do not care about the cargo size.

I've owned my CX-3 for 3 weeks, am very happy thus far! Bought it specifically for the small size (I rarely have back-seat drivers). While not a race horse, the car accelerates well, and is quite zippy. The tight ride makes it easy to drive, feels very nimble. Interior is superior to other small SUV's I tried, and its safety features were a primary motivation for selection. The "leather-like" seats are surprisingly comfortable. I've only filled up once - got 30/gallon for mix of city/highway. I do wish it had autoplay Apple, and an auto-trunk opener, but those weren't deal-breakers for me. If you want a small SUV at a very reasonable price, take this one for a test drive - you may enjoy it as much as I do!

Everything what was stated about how great this car handles is true. The safety features are amazing (adaptive cruise control), the "brake hold" is going to save my legs and back in bumper to bumper traffic. The comfort level was fantastic.

Small "SUV" Drives Like a Dream on Mud and Snow

I bought the All Wheel Drive Sport model in deep crystal blue. The exterior is so beautiful. I get constant compliments on the looks! The interior is so fun and intuitive. Everything is right where it needs to be to find it while driving. The only drawback would be the limited cargo space, but really, this is a fun sporty, reliable car! If you need a cargo van, this would not be your choice! Now the real treat: driving. Handles like a dream on the highways and on the dirt roads of the White Mountains in Arizona at 7,000 feet elevation. I don't take it off road, but the muddy dirt snowy roads are so fun to navigate in the driving machine! I'm getting 32 mpg combined highway and city, which is amazing for a fast all wheel drive car!!!

I test drove this vehicle to see what it was all about. Very nimble for a CUV. Decent pep, great safety features. Interior is right, especially for rear passengers. Little cargo room. I wish they hadn’t discontinued the Touring and Grand Touring models. I may have considered purchasing. Because of this, I chose to purchase a Hyundai Elantra GT N-Line instead, since it offered everything I wanted for not much more money. The Mazda CX-3 is a good car. It just wasn’t the vehicle for me.

We bought a Mazda CX-3 five years ago, and we were excited about the 5 year unlimited kilometers warranty considering we drive quite a bit. We really did not have any big complaints about the car and were planning to buy a CX-30. Thank god we didn’t buy another one. 2 months after our warranty ended on the CX-3, the transmission went. Sadly, Mazda Canada and the dealership were unwilling to help, other than offering to give us a good deal on a new one. They told us that transmission problems are so rare that they never actually had one at the dealership. Funny thing about that, I called my friend who bought a Mazda 3 the same time we bought ours, and who would have guessed it, the tranny went on his car too. Luckily for him, it happened under warranty. Anyways, I took the car to our local transmission shop after learning Mazda wasn’t going to do anything for us. The owner was completely surprised that Mazda was unwilling to fix the transmission as according to him there is a TSB out there that the Mazda transmission has a bearing problem. He said this was likely the cause behind our transmission problems. Anyways, it was definitely sad to hear and disappointing to learn that Mazda doesn’t stand behind their products. I sure hope all of the people we referred to Mazda don’t have the same problems we had with ours. I would never recommend Mazda to anyone, and for those who own a Mazda, I would sell it before your warranty runs out and never look back. You don’t want to be on the hook for a $6000+ transmission repair. We bought a new GMC and moved on.

Like the looks and enjoy zipping around the city but I find myself using a very heavy foot to deal with highway driving. Needs at least 20 more hp to make highway driving enjoyable and not a chore. Was 67 degrees and sunny for a change today in Seattle and had to put the ac on pretty high to deal with the heat in the car, how bad will it be at 80 to 90 degrees? Not looking forward to it, yes the lack of tinting is a significant drawback. No Apple carplay another annoying omission. And I'm finding u-turns that I made with no problem in my 2016 Mazda3 and 2016 vw tiguan are now taking two moves, the first time I attempted a familiar u-turn an oncoming car that was over 2 blocks away when I started the turn almost hit me when to my surprise I had to stop and make another steering move. So all and all I won't be getting one of these again unless there's improvement in the aforementioned issues.

Love everything about the vehicle. Have been driving it about 2 week. My only complaint is the Apple iPhone integration is less than desired. Unless I am missing something using Apple Maps for navigation will not interrupt the radio. It works fine in the Bluetooth mode; but, I like to listen to ESPN Radio while driving. This is a major downer

For transparency I adore Mazda, been driving one since July 1991. Combination of rural & suburban driving with 33+ mpg. I have not noticed noise as an issue, has the tightest steering I've ever enjoyed with the smallest turning radius. Plenty of giddy up. My wife has a van and I have a pick up so I don't use the rear seats all that much for passengers but have not had a complaint when used. Traded in my 2012 Mazda 6 for this, some might say a step down ... I'd call it a downsizing with style.

The title best describes this car, and all other rivals. It is extremely annoying to spend a couple of months test-driving different brand small SUV choices, as they are all way overpriced and extremely underpowered. The Mazda cx-3 is no exception, especially in the base sport trim. What is amusing to me, and should be to anyone else who actually wants more for their money, is that engineers continuously build underpowered cars. This is the norm for small SUV's and the CX3'S rivals. The Ford Escape, Honda CRV, Kia Sportage, Volkswagen Tiguan, Chevy Equinox, and Jeep Compass. The Mazda cx-3 is being sold fairly well mostly because of its exterior styling, which is very modern compared to others. I owned the 2016 Mazda 3 and interior quality and craftsmanship, tho way above average, was lessened by using cheap materials, and by not offering better standards. Consumers need to demand more for their money. There is no reason at all, given other engine choices that are used in different models by each brand, that the standard for small SUVs should be a 200 horsepower engine. My 2016 Hyundai Veloster Turbo has 200 horsepower and achieves 33 miles per gallon on the interstate. Why then I ask you,do we HAVE TO spend upwards of $30k and more to get WHAT SHOULD BE THE STANDARD IN AN SUV?The CX3 is a great looking car,but it's insulting to me,engineers though a paltry 2 h.p bump was even an idea on the "tweets list".148 hp makes this car sound like a sewing machine, and just doesn't justify an industry average, base msrp of $21 to $23k dollars.I for one,am tired of being ripped off.You should be too.

I like nothing about the car but the gas mileage is decent! I have no room in my console area, it takes me a lot of time to get it up to speed to get on highways, and I think now a gasket is blown a 2019 and I’m having engine problems under 60,000 miles ! It’s junk and I will never leave Honda vehicles again, first time in my life I decided to try something different and never again!

After driving virtually everything in the subcompact and compact SUV class, my wife liked this the best. Found a virtually new 2019 FWD Touring in Soul Red Crystal with Sunroof/BOSE package. This is her daily, suburban driver. No kids. This is a vehicle for a single person or couple. It drives and handles great -- very maneuverable and easy to park. Peppy. It looks great and has a premium interior. Android Auto as added for $400 and windows tinted for $200 -- problems solved.

Better than a MINI

I fell in love with this little car the minute I laid eyes on it and I was disappointed when I found that they are no longer being sold in the US. I managed to find a certified used one with super low miles. I live in San Francisco where parking can be tricky and steep hills are everywhere. I am also not a big fan of SUVs. This car has no trouble going up the hills. It is easy to park and has more way more storage than the MiNi cooper. The handling is pretty good too. It’s the perfect car for a single person or even someone with a small kid but it I wouldn’t compte this w any other SUV out there. If you like a MINI but think you need something a bit more practical and economical, then this is the car. I’m hoping that they will bring it back in different trim levels so I can upgrade. Not sure why Edmunds is comparing it with other small SUVs. This car is a bit higher off the ground than the Mazda 3 but it is not an SUV. I would compare this car with the MINI and not with a subcompact SUV because that it is not. I feel it was classified as one for marketing reasons and people’s obsession with SUVs.

209 Mazda CX3

This car is basically a 2 seater. The Mazda dealers in my area had no incentive to deal on a 2018 model. It was nowhere close to being the car I'm driving now, a 2012 Mazda.

Mx5 GT 2 Cx3 GT

I owned a Mx5 GT for 11 years and unfortunately needed to get a slightly larger car but the choice was clear and that was a Cx3 GT AWD. Bought new in 2019, has every safety feature and convenience feature available. It’s paid off! And it only has 44k miles. I love the way it looks and the way it drives. It reminds me a lot of my old Mx5. I still love driving it even after 6 years. It has been very reliable and it’s saved me from having an accident several times. I find it fascinating that the Cx3 came out in 2015 and as of 2025 it is still sold in some countries with very minimal changes. But looks wise it’s remained unchanged for a decade, to me that says Mazda got something right with this car. In 2016 it received a 5 star IIHS top rating, and it even scored high on the recently updated IIHS safety standards. My favorite features are the radar cruise control that almost drives the car for you, the adaptive led headlights are amazing they turn as you turn, the auto brights are just genius. The Bose 7 speaker sound system is great. But the heated parchment leather seats are comfortable and classy with the power drivers seat. Believe it or not the 2019 has a total of 8 cup holders, 4 in the front and 4 in the back. The one touch power sunroof is a welcome feature (highly recommend) but lastly the way that the AWD system works is genius…it uses several sensors to detect the need for it and it activates automatically. (It uses the outside temp sensor, and the speed of the auto rain sensing wiper(s) as well as your speed and use of the front or rear defrost & engages the AWD if it thinks it’s needed) the led taillights are bright and sporty. It’s the perfect size for a single person or a younger couple, it has adequate cargo room for trips and the back seats are 60/40 foldable. And if you so desire you can opt for a rooftop cargo rack. One more thing I’d like to mention is the impressive resale value. Oh and the heated steering wheel is very welcomed when it’s 15° outside. I hope this helps anyone looking for a great looking reliable small suv.

Fantastic little car. Small yes. But a great fuel efficient commuter or starter car for a young professional or family. Mine has the white leather seats and I love the interior. Note: if you dont get Navigation your clock will only ever display the correct time if your phone is plugged in. You also cannot unlock the truck while the vehicle is on which means you have to turn it off when dropping someone off and they need something out of the trunk. Other than that is has been perfect for the 62,000 that I have had it. Handles like a dream on snow and ice with winter tires. Heated steering wheel and wiper park are my favorite features.

This is the second year I am finding my car will not start when it is really cold. I have a new battery, and my car is only a 2021. I just do not understand. I have not had this problem with other cars I previously owned. Disappointed.
