Brakes keep locking up. Smart Brake System defect

I bought this 2019 Mazda 3 AWD fOr my daughter. The “smart brake system” keeps malfunctioning. Out of nowhere, for no reason, it slams on the brakes until stopped. Picture yourself driving on a highway at highway speeds with no car in front and the car stops short with incredible force. Do you see yourself getting rear ended? It happened before the recall and it continues to happen after the recall was completed. The car was at the dealer for 32 days last week. They can’t replicate the problem so they don’t know how to fix it. I brought it back to the dealer yesterday because it happened yet again. They just called me and said we cant duplicate it so come and get it. Nobody is permitted to drive this car because I’m afraid of an injury. I’m headed for lemon law attorney now.

I traded in my 2014 Mazda 3 which I never had any issues with for the 2019 Mazda 3 premium. After 2 weeks the Bluetooth no longer worked , on 2 occasions now the brakes slammed on all on their own almost getting me rear ended and now owning it for only 9 months and 3000 miles - it would not start. The car was parked in my garage and I needed to call to have it towed which wasn't an easy task. The tow company had to go back and returned with a flat bed. The car is still at the dealership and as far as I am concerned - they can keep it. You pay that much for a vehicle you expect it to run!! I can't imagine what kind of issues I am going to have in the future since they already started this early in the cars lifetime.

I purchased this car for a few reason, it's gorgeous inside and out and it offers AWD. I've always wanted an AWD sedan for the way they handle and for the added traction and stability they offer in the rain, snow or what have you. I did my due diligence and read many reviews as well as watched video reviews on this car so I thought I was well prepared and knew what I was getting. A good number of the reviews are done by journalists in markets other than the USA so they mention features that are not on my car. I was excited about this car because I wanted Traffic Sign Recognition, 360 degree camera, Traffic Jam Assist and Lane Centering. All are features that are only offered in markets other than the USA and all are described in the owners manual of the car. Needless to say I purchased the car and didn't even realize that these features were not on it. I assumed that the Premium model that I purchased would be fully loaded. Also, the Traffic Sign Recognition only works if you pay an additional $400 for the digital maps needed to activate the GPS system. I found the maps on eBay and bought it for $150, a huge savings. I got lucky and it works just fine. It did add Speed Limit notifications next to my Speedometer but not true Traffic Sign Recognition. The speed limits that it displays are stored as part of the GPS maps, not read by the camera system to be displayed on the fly. I also feel that the GPS maps should be included as standard. This car has been recalled a few times already, one for loose lug nuts and the most recent for the Cylinder Deactivation System which could malfunction and seize the engine. It's a software fix so I'm not overly concerned. Also, I get a warning that the Auto Headlights are malfunctioning if the car sits all day in the hot sun. When I get into the hot car and start it I get the warning message. Mazda is aware of this too but so far no recall to fix the issue. The engine is very smooth and revs willingly. The transmission is probably the fastest shifting automatic that I've ever encountered. It's shifts are silky smooth, precise and always in the right gear. So far fuel economy is nothing special. The trip computer says that I get between 19-22 City and 26 Highway. I'll give it a while longer to see if it improves as the car breaks in. The interior is a bit small but that's fine with me, I'm only 5'8" and I like everything to be within reach.

I bought this car (Mazda 3 Select) about two months ago and have already put 4000 miles on it via several road trips. I can say that it is extremely comfortable, up-scale, and it is Fun to drive. I came from a 2015 Honda Civic (1.5 l turbo) . Having owned both I can say that I can give a slight edge to the Mazda just because of the handling and feel on any curved road. It's just fun and almost whimsical to drive. Don't get me wrong, both the Civic and the Mazda 3 are excellent compact cars, and they both have many strengths and few weaknesses, but I am just ever so slightly more in love with my new Mazda!

I traded in my 2014 4 door i Grand Touring. It was incredibly reliable but horrible in snow. I have not had a chance to really test the AWD as it is now spring. The interior is MUCH upgraded, and the infotainment system and safety features rock. Very 21st century. Beautiful materials / craftsmanship on interior. Much quieter ride than previous versions. Not an ASS-kicking engine, but fun to drive on winding roads. Still has the "Zoom-Zoom" especially in Sports mode.

I purchased a new Mazda3 in April 2019. I originally test drove a 2016 Mazda3 GT because I thought I wanted a used car vs a new one. After driving both, I chose the new 3 premium package. Although I've had one hiccup with the car (which the dealership promptly corrected), I've enjoyed how comfortable the car is, as well as the gas mileage. My only complaint is how easily the piano black interior trim scratches. It seems that the trim should be ALOT more scratch resistant than it is. The Radar controlled cruise control takes a little getting used to also. Overall, an awesome little car :) UPDATE: At the 8000 mile mark something went TERRIBLY wrong with this car... it slammed on brakes all by itself, causing injury to my neck and teeth. It has been at the dealership now for 26 days with no date given for repair. Apparently my car was one of two that has done this in the US. If you have kids or are an older adult who can’t afford to take the risk, don’t buy this car until the Mazda engineers can assure you it’s not going to develop a mind of its own!!! Bottom Line: Mazda USA ultimately bought this car back. From what I understand, the car was to be taken apart completely to investigate what went so wrong. I turned around and purchased a 2019 Mazda 6 Signature edition, which has been a true dream car to own and drive. Obviously, my experience with the redesigned 3 did NOT sour me on Mazda products! They absolutely stand behind their product and it was greatly appreciated by me 😉

The redesigned 2019 Mazda3 is a big upgrade. You really feel like you are driving a luxury car, not just your standard sedan. It retains the driving excitement that Mazda3 is well known for, but the interior feels like a Lexus or Audi. Very comfortable and quiet ride with all the features you’d need.

This car exceeds my expectations and I’m a car fanatic who values details. Mazda tried hard on this car and you can tell. It drives largely like my A3 Quattro I leased, though it won’t implode after 45k miles and bend every rim it has. Further, it costs much less and every surface is finished properly. The Bose is downright impressive. Seat comfort is high (memory an added bonus). Infotainment is logical and easy to use, and the car is quiet even up to speeds of 80 mph except for some concrete surfaces. The ride is controlled and well damped, though bad roads will send some slams through but what do you expect with low profile 18”s. And for the way it handles, which is excellent, the trade off and stability are worth it. Seriously short list this car. I think only the Accord (NOT civic) can match or beat the cohesiveness of this design. Not to mention the 3 is far more beautiful than any Honda ever. Last worthy mentions: headlights are great and I enjoy the active bending (though not required) and the heads up includes Nav directions and blind spot info. Pretty spiffy! The adaptive cruise and lane departure are sometimes abrupt but make sense in line with the sporty drive it yourself Mazda ethos. Conclusions: For the price you can’t beat it. Most people don’t need accord size, so why not do more with less. A premium product at a mainstream price. Took the time to write this because Mazda should be recognized for how special their products are.

Upscale Design, Styling, Features - Econobox Price

Hercule P., 12/18/2019
2019 Mazda 3 Select 4dr Sedan (2.5L 4cyl 6A)

Initial thoughts on 2019 4th gen Mazda3 -- Ergonomic multi-function display & controls; superb instrument cluster display; front seating comfort with fast simple manual adjustment; upscale interior fit & finish (black vinyl); key-less walk-away locking & push-button start; modest, but very usable trunk space; and quiet, comfortable highway cruising all make this 2019 Mazda3 Sedan Select the high-value leader in the ever-dwindling compact sedan sector. The new-to-2019 torsion beam rear suspension degrades the nimble handling of previous generation's independent suspension. The 2.5L normally-aspirated 4-cylinder should contribute to low maintenance and long life compared with the small turbocharged engines of most competitors. But, 186 Hp / 186 lb-ft is not enough grunt for this 3,100 lb gross weight car -- don't expect a lot of zip especially with the 6-speed automatic transmission in economy mode (use the Sport switch on the center console to change out of the default econo setting). My wife, the primary driver, finds the 186 hp engine mated to the 6-speed AT more than adequate and is averaging 35 mpg in mixed highway/city use. I much prefer the performance of this Mazda traditional automatic transmission to the "rubber band" feel of CVTs found on most economy compact cars. And, while the jury is still out, I suspect that CVTs will not nearly match the longevity of traditional automatic transmissions. Rear seating is tight -- tighter than that of our smaller 1990 Honda Accord that we traded for this Mazda3 -- carrying adults in the Mazda's rear seat is an emergency procedure. There are a couple of other niggles: The Mazda remote key fob is larger than and not as well-executed as that of the Honda Civic; the electric steering is responsive, but excessively light with minimal feedback -- again, my wife has no complaint; the "Mazda Connect Owner's Manual" covering the infotainment system that is referenced in the primary Owner's Manual is not available in hard copy, only on the dashboard center display (while the battery is rapidly depleting, the idling Mazda3 is burning up our precious carbon fuels, or while the distracted driver-cum-reader meanders through traffic); the printed primary "Owner's Manual" runs hundreds of pages half of which are safety cautions and warnings from Mazda USA's legal team -- e.g., prohibitions against allowing children to play in the trunk compartment or warnings against jumping from moving cars with detail on why these are not good ideas. Despite these niggles, the 2019 Mazda3 is a very complete package with design, fit & finish, and strong underlying automobile technology that far exceeds it's price point. The purchase from DFW area Hiley Mazda in Hurst (Rich Longworth) was swift, smooth, and very accommodating.

Take out the tire protection plan

I leased the 2016 Mazda 3– an incredible car. So I upgraded to the next one available, the 2019. The low profile tires are its detriment. Sure she’s beautiful, but these tires have made me afraid to drive this car. On my second new tire, love the car, but you cannot hit any bumps with these. Even without hitting any crazy bumps, I’ve gotten two bubbled tires now. If you live in a well paved area, maybe this isn’t an issue. But something to note.

Mazda's Masterpeice

I love this car, 10k miles here is my review. To start off with whats wrong. Easily the Infotainment is sub par. Mazda doesn't want you touching while driving so you use a scroll wheel. Some things are very counter intuitive, say every time you want to switch radio stations it will always start you from the bottom of the list, to make it quicker if you add favorites but they aren't in numerical order. It takes 20 minutes of driving to understand it and maybe a week to get use to the wackiness. However if guests take control they'll have no idea how to use it and it is always funny seeing their shock with how unusual it it. The easy counter to this, just always have Bluetooth on your phone connected, Spotify or Pandora makes it a better radio than normal AM/FM. And second is Lane Departure Warning/Assist. I have actually turned assist off because it has only ever helped once. Many times I move over due to a Semi Truck, or cars drifting in my lane in a turn, or to move out of the way for lane splitting motorcycles, however doing these will result in the wheel moving back towards the object you're avoiding, it can be counter by holding on tight. But the night i turned it off was when i was exiting the freeway. I was in the left lane of a two lane, left turn lane. The camera picked up the wrong lines and "corrected" me turning the wheel to the right, this happens a little to often because it will pick up changes in the road like old painted lanes or changes in the road concrete or asphalt. I just have the noise alarm on, but that maybe still be a bit useless unless i'm in cruise control because i generally always know when i'm near the line because i am doing so on purpose. However Besides those this car is amazing the HUD is a little bare i wish it showed which turn signals were on, but if they are on and a car is in your blind spot the HUD will flash orange. The BOSE sound is some amazing audio. Its not the fastest engine but in Sport mode it has some, not like 350hp, but a little kick when you step on it. Handling is fantastic, its rolling suspension feels like your flying or on a boat in smooth water. It also looks amazing. There aren't tones of these on the road, plenty of Mazda's CX-9 and 6's but with the large front scoop (with a horrible place to put a license) and no fake front vents, sleek aerodynamic lines (Drag coefficient of 0.26) and nice looking headlights and turn signals. I would definitely suggest at least the preferred model. This car is perfect for anyone trying to stand out, loves an open road and the act of driving.

I love the car, leased it 2 weeks ago on 06/11/2019 had it 2 weeks now, the only issue i faced was a Push to start issue, the car gave me a hard start but dropped it off to the dealer for a service look and it should be all better. I love the luxury interior, feels like I'm driving a BMW and the exterior finishes makes the car look so much more premium, I never liked the Mazda lineup until the 2019 releases!! Mazda have stepped up their game in style and luxury. I gave up my 2017 Honda Civic for this car and no regrets so far!!

Pros: - love the style inside and out on the sedan. - love the way Mazda drives, handles well. - The Bose sound system is great. - I feel safe in this car. Cons: - Tight space, especially the back seats. - The safety features in the US are missing some items compare to other countries. - Missing some basic features even compare to my old 07 Jetta. (heater mirror, car alarm for break in, etc) - The display should have been touch screen as well, for when you're just sitting in the car. After having the car for about half year now, these are some thing off the top of my head. I liked the previous style of the Mazda, with this generation it's takes it up a notch. The Bose sound system sounds really good, I just wish there was a CD player. Yes, a CD player. Because mp3s and music streaming still have a lower sound quality than CD, I would like to see if this system can tell the difference. Make sure to do your research before buying, cause I didn't. I just assume some of the items were standard until after I bought the car. During the winter every morning my mirrors were fogged up, it was then I found out there's no heater mirror on the car. Most cars now a days have heated mirrors standard or comes with heated seats. I honestly don't understand what Mazda was thinking. I still haven't needed the AWD so I can't comment much on that. Personally I wanted a stick shift but I didn't like the hatch style or pay for the premium trim, oh well. Over all it's a nice car but like every car out there, it's not perfect.

Had the breaking problem when new and was fixed with an update. On the 3rd battery now as it has something that always kills the battery. Mazda says everything is good!!! If you don’t drive the car everyday especially in the winter the battery is dead. Must have some huge draw but apparently everything checks out ok? Last Mazda

Not ready for prime-time

This is my third Mazda 3. I bought the Premium Sedan in a beautiful blue and was so excited to get the new model with all the new technology. However, I could not be more disappointed and will never get another Mazda. The most basic car functions do not work. The bluetooth is almost non-functional. When I talk to people they often can't hear me and when I leave a message it isn't decipherable. If I turn the fan all the way down, I have better luck as it diminishes the background sound. It still isn't clear but better. I never had any issue with my 2015 Mazda 3. Then the HVAC system is ridiculous. The thermostat runs very hot so it's hard to get a comfortable temperature in the car. Add to that it blows heat when you turn on the A/C sometimes. This is a problem they know about and say there is a patch coming. I have no confidence whatsoever in the fix. Then there are 2 gas gauges, one a normal dial that barely ever moves and another gauge adjacent to that that shows in a linear graph form the miles remaining. The 2 gauges never agree. Then the gauge with the miles remaining, started at 300 with a full tank but then only showed 280 when filled. Then it would drop 20 miles after I had gone about 4. This is absurd. I can't believe they didn't do the work to be sure of the quality control. I don't know if my car is a lemon or not but some of the issues I've been told are known and Mazda is looking to fix them. I sort of dread getting into my car not knowing what is going to happen next. It drives nicely, smooth and comfortable and the seats are good. But this does not compensate for all the normal functions that simply don't work. Shame on Mazda.

Its a really nice car. Very compact and comfortable. If you are much taller than 6ft, I wouldn't recommend. It's a nice family car if you have a smaller family. Gets amazing gas mileage. The trunk space is huge for a small sedan. Molded sears are comfy when driving for 2hrs plus. Definitely a good buy and worth keeping.

Excellent car for the price. Nearly 40,000 miles later I love the style and drive like it's day 1. The interior could fool you into thinking it's a luxury brand, and years later still holds up well. No gimmicks, just elegance and a fun driving experience. Only issue I've had a faulty tire sensor that needed to be fixed about 37,000 miles in, and a warped rotor. Both could have been one off flukes, but only time will tell. Would highly recommend.
