I love my hunk of junk......
My opinion of the 1990 Lincoln Continental, based on my own sordid experience, would be: It has been one of the worst cars ever from a reliability/maintainability/mechanical standpoint. I have had to replaced almost every major system. The only major component that has not failed is the forward portion of the transmission. The plastic interior molding flakes silver chips constantly and has for years. The sun roof leaks, the engine cuts off for unknown reasons during the spring and summer, the A/C/Heater is stuck permanently on "on", etc.,
Lincoln Lemon
Everything has been replaced somethings 2 times! NO confidence in Lincoln Motor Co.
Expensive to own
My first experience with buying a used luxury car with 80k miles. Lots of expensive problems with brakes, faulty engine head bolts but I really liked the way it rode and drove. Finally sold it at 125k miles when it needed new air shocks, at that time only available from mfg. at more than what the car was worth! Even then, probably would have done it but transmission had a weird slipping problem going around corners. This was essentially built on the Taurus platform and with improvements to the items mentioned is what the Taurus should have become in my opinion.
Expensive to keep.
Nice car when it is running. I have replaced air shock and air pump, head gasket, air conditioning, and brake booster.
Headache to own
1992 Lincoln Continental purchased used october 1992. Engine went bad day after purchase(63000 miles). New used engine replaced by seller had 47000 miles on it 12/12 warrenty. Transmission went bad 2 months after purchase. Rebuilt and on the way home engine started knocking it now has burnt valve. If you purchase a lincoln from this year have deep pockets.
Fun but EXPENSIVE
I do love my car don't get me wrong, but wow!! If I knew now how expensive it was to keep a car like this one going I would never have purchased my continental. But oh well now!! I have the pleasure of owning one of the most expensive hunks of junk on the planet!! I will say though that the ride is smooth but really this car was not woth the $$$
They saw me coming
What a piece of junk. I have replaced axils twice, exchanged air ride for good struts and shocks, radiator, water pump,ac compressor, poor heat, replaced computer, tranny is going, poor ac/heat buttons (all of them broken) radio doesn't work, windows, doors and locks fixed numerous times. security system goes off at will. air bag warning light always flashes.power seat buttons are broken. brakes, brakes, brakes. power antenna doesn't work. Ford should be ashamed. i can't even drive the worthless car into the ground and worse yet, no one wants it. i'm stuck with it.
Smooth ride, but costly repair
Replaced all 4 air suspensions, the cluster, radio cassette, AC control, all gaskets... Once, all transmission fluid leaked out while driving! Sorry, I am telling the truth. It still runs well (with my free labor and time; I cannot charge my wife!) and I still keep it. I also had a 96 Lincoln Mark VIII bought at 79120 miles, transmission broken down at 79185 miles, the dealer said, "once you drove it out of out lot...", had to replace another one ($2700), hundred of things happened before trading it back at 91 K miles. I would sin if I sold it to another victim of it.
Ok
As a imports mechanic, i get used to fixing or driving lexues, acuras, and etc. i recently brought this car because of the price. $1,100 because the front strut where missing and the owner could not afford to fix it. So after fixing the struts costing me about $800 total. after driving the car for 100 miles, the coolant started to leak like crazy. The oil is starting to leak, and the switch for the windsheild washer fluid shorted. i am not planing to keep this car, any longer. it cost more to maintain then the price of the car. Besides all the stuff above, this car gives you a great ride for a long trip, or just a ride in the city. it has great insullation.
Awesome Car
Despite some expensive repairs to the gas/air suspension and the head gasket, aside from these reliability problems, this car is flawless. Although no sport sedan, it handles quickly and responsively. Steering is a bit numb, but the ride is astonishing - riding, literally and figuratively, on air. And despite first opinions based on the ride comfort, it still has plenty of grip to go around when needed. And it's comfortable, large interior includes automatic just about everything to make your drive that much easier. Bravo!
Money Pit
Anything that could go wrong did go wrong. From transmission to suspension. Three alternators, two starters, A/C system, all four door locks, window switches, cassette player. If you want to throw away money then this car is for you.
90 Lincoln California
Fun to own and drive, replacement parts for it are "cheaply" available very good road car!!
A disaster
Thought a 9 year old quality US car with omly 102k miles would not be a bad decision. How wrong and $7k later - big mistake. Many major problems - too long to list
keep fixing it
junk junk junk, glad its got a big trunk, keep your tools in there, but when the suspension is out (3 times) itll cause for a rougher ride with the extra weight
Love Hate Relationship
I got this car for a steal, or at least I thought I did. It had its used car problems, but no big. Then one day I'm driving along, and the brake light comes on. Hmmmm, I didn't feel anything wrong with the brakes. Then all the sudden 20 min later, the brake petal sticks to the floor. Yeah, electric brake booster failure. Try $2000 for parts and $600 for labor cause no one will touch it but the dealer. So that was a huge investment down the drain, anyone want to buy a great car, needs break work, though! :)
The Ford Linclon Mercury Car
I bought my Linclon in 1999 at nine years old for $7000. My wife hates it. and I do to. My car is very good in bad weather but not in the shop. I hears very strange noises yesterday in my car. Earlier today The car broke down. My wife has a Sabb that is so much beter than my car. My 27 year old son's 1997 Toyota Camry and my 32 year old daughter's 1994 Toyota Avolon and my 42 year old son in law's 1977 Honda Accord are so much better than my car. My son in law's 1977 Honda which has 2 millon miles on it, lasted longer than my old Linclon. Next I plan to buy a Sabb or a Honda or even a Toyota instead of this.
lincoln luxury
The lincoln continental is a very fun car to drive , but there are some issues to deal with like the air ride system and the factory sound system, transmissions. I've owned three and all Ihad trouble with was the air ride, but if I was to tell someone to get one and drive one for themselves is the only way to experience them.
Get rid of the struts
This car rides great I enjoyed this car of all the car I own. But they need to stop putting those air control shocks on the acr and just put a good pair of monore shocks. But then again the car company would lose money on maintenance rpairs. To pay two thousand for front and rear shock replacement is a ripp off
Great Car
I own a 1991 Lincoln Continental, Dark Plum. I am the only owner on this car and still own it to this day 2009. It looks like it just came off the show room floor! Why because I take care of it, yes it need somethings over the years but that is with any car! Their is no other car out there that has it ride and performance. Build very well and will keep you safe if ever in an accident! If you have one take care of it! They are worth it!
Where do I begin?
Auto leveling sys. rides at full height sometimes, poor A/C buttons design, AM/FM quit working, temp. ctrl damper sticks, OEM transmission recalled, rear windows quit working, fr. pass. window works intermitantly, front brake rotors warp when brakes applied with more than normal force, i.e. panic stop, digital speedometer acts up indicating 8-12mph all the time, moving or not, air bag warning light flashing. Kelly Blue book $ in fair cond. $1650. Imagine $ in poor condition. CAN U SAY DEPRECIATION!
continental review
a lemmon from the start I,ve replaed engine mounts, airconditioning, air ride , radio, electric windows, electric door locks, head liner, electric antenna, painted exterior, and now the ac is broken again, door locks again, and it needs a new transmission The car was a piece of junk from the start, Ill never buy another one in my life
dead
rides nice, great engine, good gas mileage for a big car average 19.5. Lots of room great for a big guy
New Owner
I have just purchased this 1991 Lincoln with the idea of refurbishing it. I had a chance to drive it for about 200mi. and was quite impressed with its handling. The interior I found quite comfortable and for a tall person such as myself, I found the leg room quite pleasing.
It is all about the air.
This is a good car for the price.
Nice Car, Too Bad It Was Built Poorly
Always thought that a luxury car should at least be competitive in reliability, but I've never owned a more problematic car
lincoln review
vehicle has been a excellent machine
Never again
Ok, I've owned 2 Continentals. My first was a 1990 and 2nd (which was a mistake)was a 1992. On the first one the air ride went out on it, so I replaced it with normal shocks($1500). Then the radiator went and put a rod knock in the engine. So I got a new one and know the C/v axles are going on this one and the rear shocks. The transmission is shot and the calipers are frossen. So I'll never buy a 1990-1994 Continental again.
Lemon
This car has been a lemon from the day I purchased it! New airconditioner, new heads, new air shocks, new hood shocks, and the list goes on and on! I would never buy another Lincoln!
A real owner of a 1990 continental
I have been more than happy with my car.. to the point that although I have had no major repair needed the entire time I've owned it, I would not hesitate to have those repairs done.. this has been one of the best cars I've owned..
Fun car to drive, hard to keep
Drove this car for a year and I plan on selling very soon. Got lots of compliments on this car. It simply looked awesome with HID lights and chrome wheels. The body is still in great shape. Looks newer than the car actually is. The transmission needed to be rebuilt, head gaskets needed to be replaced, and new o-rings in air ride. Lots of little problems that needed to be fixed.
dont buy a lincoln!!! it is a junk!!!
i bought this car for $ 4500 and end up spending another 5000 for the transmission, engine and the air shocks. it is a piece of junk. if you buy a lincoln you will make the biggest mistake in your life
