The 2023 Lincoln Aviator provides an upscale interior design, a comfortable ride quality and strong acceleration. Other midsize three-row luxury SUVs are more poised when going around turns, but overall we like how the Aviator offers something a little different.

Notably, the Aviator offers an available plug-in hybrid powertrain. It'll go about 21 miles on all-electric power before switching to regular hybrid operation. Recharge frequently either at home or at a public charging station and you can really start saving on gas. That electrified drivetrain option sets the Aviator apart from its primary rivals, which include two of our favorites in the class, the Audi Q7 and Acura MDX.
Like other Lincolns, the 2023 Aviator has distinctive design inside and out. It offers plenty of room for passengers and cargo, and it's quite comfortable, especially when equipped with its upgraded front seats. Lincoln hasn't made any substantial changes to the 2023 Aviator. Be sure to read our Expert Rating of this SUV to decide whether it deserves a slot on your consideration list.
Edmunds Expert Rating

Good
7.7
out of 10
We drove the 2023 Lincoln Aviator on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
7/10
How does the Aviator drive? The Aviator is quick in a straight line. While there's a slight delay when you ask it for power, the Aviator really gets going after that. In Edmunds' testing, our all-wheel-drive Aviator Black Label covered 0-60 mph in a quick 5.9 seconds.
Braking and handling are less exemplary. The brake pedal is overly soft, making smooth control difficult. The Aviator also feels big and wallowy when you're driving around turns and doesn't give you much confidence in its stability. Another problem is the transmission's clunky and slow transition between forward and reverse. All of these issues combine to make driving the Aviator less pleasing than we expected.

Comfort
8.5/10
How comfortable is the Aviator? The Aviator reminds us a bit of Lincoln models of old: It's big, heavy and cushy. Bumps are absorbed nicely, although there can be a bit of residual body motion. Wind and traffic noise is minimal, so you can have a quiet conversation in the cabin if you want.
The highly adjustable seats are quite comfortable once you've managed to dial them in. One notable demerit: The seat is a bit narrow, so you may feel the hard frame on your hips. As for the climate control system, it does a good job of regulating cabin temperature, though the seat heating and cooling are a bit weak.

Interior
7.5/10
How’s the interior? The third row is pretty much a kids-only affair; there's just not much legroom back there. The second row is better and has a lot of legroom, but headroom is a bit limited if you have an Aviator with the optional sunroof. Up front, headroom can be tight for tall adults.
Visibility is another concern. The windshield and rear window are short, blocking some of your view of the road. There are also a lot of surfaces around the cabin that can cause distracting glare and reflections. As for the controls, they're generally easy to use, though pushing the transmission shift buttons and the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel can require taking your eyes off the road.

Technology
7.5/10
How’s the tech? The infotainment screen has large text and virtual buttons, making it friendly no matter your comfort level with technology. However, it's a less sophisticated system than some competitors and lacks some of the coolest new features. For device integration, the first two rows have plenty of options for plugging in devices. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard, but using one of the smartphone integration systems locks you out of basic voice controls and creates annoyances with things such as adjusting vehicle settings or switching radio stations.
The Aviator's driver aids are quite good. The lane keeping and centering system, for example, works well and isn't overly noticeable. Adaptive cruise control is smooth in heavy traffic, although it will brake aggressively if you set it to follow the vehicle ahead closely.

Storage
8/10
How’s the storage? The Aviator has an edge over competitors for storage behind the third row. Space behind the second row is average, and many competitors offer more maximum cargo volume. Our Aviator test vehicle had the optional air suspension, which you can use to lower the ride height and make it easier to load cargo. If you want to tow, the Aviator offers a solid 6,700 pounds of max towing capacity. The strong V6 engine helps out too.
Inside the cabin, all three rows offer a handful of useful storage options, though the center console box is a bit shallow. Small-item storage isn't class-leading, but it is certainly sufficient. For family taxi duty, the Aviator's second-row seat is roomy enough to install even bulky rear-facing safety seats. The car seat anchors are easy to access.

Fuel Economy
6.5/10
How’s the fuel economy? The EPA estimates of 20 mpg combined (17 city/24 highway) for the all-wheel-drive Aviator and 21 mpg combined (18 city/26 highway) for the rear-wheel-drive model are acceptable for the class. But in our time with the Aviator, our best tank only returned 18 mpg, and our overall average was under 16 mpg.
Value
7.5/10
Is the Aviator a good value? Lincoln has come a long way in terms of design, content and quality. The Aviator looks and feels luxurious inside and out, with lots of thought put into making sure the first- and second-row passengers have a premium experience. The chrome and piano black trims are a bit chintzy, but other than that the Aviator offers something special.
We do question the value of the Aviator at its highest trim level. Our loaded Black Label test vehicle felt distinctly overpriced at $84,000. If you can live with a less luxe interior, go with the more competitively priced Reserve.

Wildcard
8/10
The Aviator looks distinctive, which we like. At the same time, it reminds us a bit of Lincoln models of days gone by. This vehicle is best driven in a straight line since it lacks the poise and confidence of European competitors when the road gets twisty. Don't care? Then you'll just be pleased to see Lincoln staking out a distinctive luxury personality.
2023 Lincoln Aviator trim level differences
The 2023 Lincoln Aviator is a three-row midsize SUV available in five trim levels: Aviator, Reserve, Black Label, Grand Touring and Grand Touring Black Label. The Aviator, Reserve and Black Label have a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine (400 horsepower, 415 lb-ft of torque). Grand Touring and Grand Touring Black Label models use a plug-in hybrid powertrain based on the V6 engine (494 hp, 630 lb-ft). With the Aviator and Reserve trims, the SUV has standard rear-wheel drive with all-wheel drive available as an option. Black Label and both Grand Touring models use all-wheel drive.
Which Aviator trim does Edmunds recommend?
For the best combination of standard equipment and the ability to customize this luxury SUV to your preferences, we recommend the Aviator Reserve. However, because the Aviator's optional plug-in hybrid powertrain is unavailable with Reserve trim, the Grand Touring is your best choice if you want an electrified Aviator.

2022 Lincoln Aviator Reserve 4dr SUV (3.0L 6cyl Turbo 10A)
We moved from a Lexus RX350 to the 2022 Aviator Reserve and are pleasantly surprised. The ride and technology blow away the RX. The messaging seats are great for longer trips. It really helps if you have a bad back, which I do. We have had our Aviator now for 7 weeks and have driven 1,800 miles without any issues except for 3-4 occasions when the Sirius radio has not reconnected after a … quick 2-3 minute trip to gas station or grocery store (happened 4x). The 28 speaker stereo is as good as any I've ever heard in a car. The acceleration is fantastic. It blows away the RX we had. The only major drawback so far would be the gas mileage. On long drives we have only gotten 21-22 mpg. We have had Lexus vehicle's for over 12 years and I was hesitant on switching but the power and comfort level in the Aviator swayed us. I'm hoping the reliability can equal the Lexus. The reviews on previous year models has me a bit worried but like I said, so far it has been great.
3/6/22:
After having several Lexus RX350’s we switched it up and leased a 22’ Aviator Reserve. Although we ended up spending more than what we wanted in hindsight stepping up to the Aviator has been a great choice. Initially I was concerned about getting an Aviator after reading all the issues and buy backs Aviator owners have had we have been thrilled. We have driven 5K miles in the 5 months we have had it and no major issues and nothing that required me to talk to dealer about. Just had to check the manual. All the safety features are really nice too. We’ve gotten several compliments on the new color, Ceramic Pearl.
We thoroughly enjoy all the bells and whistles the Aviator has which the Lexus RX didn’t. The messaging seats have made longer trips a breeze. My back issues have dissipated.
The power of the V6 twin turbo would leave my old RX in the dust. The Revell stereo with 28 speakers blows me out of the car.
The third row seat is only good for kids not adults. That’s about the only negative other than the gas mileage which is 19 city and 23 highway. The piano gear shifting still is taking time to get used to.
Happy camper
So it’s been 18 months and we still have had absolutely no issues with this beauty. The combined mileage is 22.5 which isn’t the greatest but it could be worse. Still a great road trip car.

2022 Lincoln Aviator Reserve 4dr SUV AWD (3.0L 6cyl Turbo 10A)
I’ve driven my 2022 Aviator for about four months now with no repairs needed. Very quiet, nice ride, comfortable seats and right at 20 MPG combined mileage. I’m very satisfied with this purchase.
The Aviator now has about 18,000 miles. A few thousand miles ago I got an engine warning light on the dash. The dealer replaced something having to do with the thermostat. Other than that, the … Lincoln hasn’t caused me any grief. It’s a beautiful vehicle, rides great. I’m very pleased.

2022 Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring 4dr SUV AWD (3.0L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 10A)
Grand Touring the best part of it, it doesn't use that much gas. The salesperson thought I was kind of crazy when I ordered it gas was $2 a gallon, a $5000 upgrade. But 5 months later when I got the car, gas was over $4 a gallon. With the $6500 Government rebate which I didn't know about at the time, ended up being a win-win. It comes with a 110v or 220v charging unit. First, I just … charged it with 110v outlet but that was an overnight process. I upgraded to a 220v outlet now it charges in just a few hours. My average is 39.3 MPG for 14,000 miles.
The good news about the car; engine is power peppy. I like the center console with buttons in it.
With a glance, one can fell the buttons without having to keep looking. Touch screens are nice but distracting. The safety features are great when we first got it. I was backing up and my daughter (22) walked next to the rear quarter panel, and it stopped, the pedestrian sensors really work. It has all the driving features; adaptive cruise, lane keep assist, blind spot, hot and cold with massage seats and heads up display (my Fav). Plenty of room in the second row, third row is tight but usable for short trips. Plenty of room in the back with the third row folded, the push bottom up and down is great.
The downside: the seats are not very comfortable on long trips. After about a few hours, the seats tend to be hard even with the full massage function. Luckily, I haven't had to travel more than four hours at a time.
Awesome Ride

my previous car was a jaguar fpace.
Nice car but the lincoln has it beat
the aviator is quiet, comfortable roomy
and not too bad on fuel. i did a 200 mile all highway run and got 27.6 mpg at highway speed. my only complaint is the exterior fit and finish which is no big deal
