Strong running versatile 4x4 SUV on and off- road.
My third Jeep, second Grand Cherokee. Ist one had the straight six, very strong, reliable engine. It wasn't 4 wheel drive, but took me safely off road to places that were very tough terrain. Never broke and I drove it hard. Bought this newer Grand Cherokee used,13 years old w/110K miles, but excellent condition inside and out with full- time 4WD. I like to go off-roading on weekends. Previously owned a lifted Jeep Wrangler, Toyota Land Cruiser FJ- 40 and Subaru Impreza w/4WD. All went through snow and ice no problem, and were all very good off road. The Toyota was built like a tank, and rode roughly like the 70's 4x4 it was. The '99 GC rode well on highway and off, but not as smoothly as this 2007 GC which has a more luxury feel and ride due to the independent front suspension, but is still tough enough for towing or off-roading with the solid live rear axle. It has a very assured feel handling rough terrain off the pavement, even with no low range gearing. On the highway it's got car like handling at speed once you get used to it being an SUV with high ground clearance compared to most other stock non-lifted vehicles. The 3.7 V6 has plenty of torque, and has left a few V8 powered SUV's and trucks way behind. Gas mileage is only about 14 mpg but I carry a lot of gear inside and have roof racks. So far no problem with the transmission not shifting, and the overall handling, power, ride quality, and still rugged looking basic Jeep styling holds up to much newer and way more expensive 4wd SUV's that all look exactly the same now, like big jelly beans. Mine is basically stock with minor mods and I get lots of looks from other drivers in lifted trucks and modified Wranglers and high dollar Range Rovers which I would not trade it for. Based on how it feels off road I would trust it with the right suspension set up and tires/wheels as much as my Wrangler and FJ-40 even without low range transfer case or lockers. It feels really safe as a daily driver but it's still a true Jeep and can handle the rough stuff like gravel and bumpy trails like a Jeep should do. It carries a ton of stuff without even feeling heavily loaded. The base Laredo 4WD has the same Daimler transmission as the SRT-8 version which was and still is one of the fastest SUV's ever built. Not sure why so many transmission problems listed in other reviews, if caused by a bad transmission module it shouldn't be that hard of a fix for a certified Jeep mechanic. I only paid seven grand for mine used and am enjoying owning a good running, good looking 4x4 SUV, definitely the nicest and most versatile 4x4 I've owned, still looks good in the parking lot at work alongside much newer SUV's, and out on the road. Has a few luxury amenities like power seats and good A/C, comfortable seats, good visibility except for the wide front window pillars, with grab handles built in, which if you actually ever have gone off- roading prove to be very useful for both driver and passenger in prevention of head toss and stability inside on extreme bumpy terrain. So far the best overall vehicle I've owned and I plan to keep it a long time. In my opinion any Jeep Grand Cherokee is a good vehicle, although the newest ones are getting way too generic and car like in appearance. The 2005-10 models have the right balance of luxury SUV and traditional Jeep ruggedness. The 3.7 litre V6 has plenty pof torque and power, accelerates well in traffic, runs great on long fast freeway trips.

Absolute Worst Vehicle and Overall Experience EVER!
Bought a "pristine" 2007 Jeep GC (5.7 Hemi) used with about 35k miles less than a year ago. The vehicle has spent more time at the dealership service center than on the road. It stalls in motion and at stops without warning, causing power steering and brakes to go out. I've taken the Jeep to two different dealerships a total of 6 times now and the stalling is worse than ever. I have also filed complaints with Chrysler and NHTSA, with no recourse (neither have even contacted me back). This is the most dangerous and unreliable vehicle on the road. With thousands of other people experiencing the same stalling issue, I guess it will take someone's death before anyone takes action.

2007 Jeep Cherokee Needs to be Recalled
I just purchased a 2007 Grand Jeep Cherokee in November 2009. I have taken it back to the CarMax three times for the same problem. Vehicle mysteriously will fail to accelerate while driving or delay in shifting gears. (Once, it happened to me when I was entering the highway from an on ramp. I was forced to put the hazards on and pray someone did not run into me.) CarMax said they fixed it when they replace the shift module, but it happened again. This time the vehicle slowed down and then just cut off. I don't feel safe driving this anymore. I could have been seriously injured or killed.
2006 Overland
I use this Jeep for weekend driving from CT to NH and use it off road quite a bit. It's is a joy to drive on the highway. It's fast for an SUV but a tad torquey around town (lots of head snapping) with the family and dog in the car. It's quite capable off road but doesn't seem as tough as the 2001 Jeep I had or my Tahoe Z71 with a heavy duty suspension. It also gets worse gas mileage than my Tahoe. If you have to choose between a larger SUV and this one I would chose the Tahoe over the Overland.
Better than Liberty
I had a 2004 Liberty drove it from FL to IL. Came home with the Cherokee. The Cherokee was a much more comfortable drive. I did not feel like I need to get out and stretch as much.
