You will like this car, but might not love it
The Veloster is one of those cars that will turn heads like the Mini Cooper did when it is re-released in the early 2000s. Stylish and different with a next generation interior, this car is fun to own. You will like it, but will probably not love it. Compared to the Mini Cooper, it's performance and handling is terrible. Even with the manual transmission, it is impossible to get enough torque out of the engine to make it fun. That being said, the panoramic sun roof, comfortable seats and great sound system help make this car enjoyable. An improvement in performance and handling is certainly doable. If Hyundai makes this happen, watch out.

2013 Veloster
I am loving this car! So much fun to drive! My only complaint is so minor and that is when I leave the lights on - it doesn't ding when I leave my lights on like my last car, LOL! See minor and not even relevant to how much fun it is to drive. Shifts super smooth!

Reliable Fun Economical
We just traded our 2013 Veloster Turbo Auto in with almost 88,000 miles. It was so good to us I thought it deserved a review. We were meticulous about maintenance but it never gave us any issues outside or routine care. Fun to drive. Great on gas mileage and no issues. If you can live with the space issues it has then you’ll enjoy this vehicle. We only traded it to get a bigger vehicle people can actually fit in the back of. Otherwise great car!
beautiful but buyer beware
Nice features and beautiful car. 50k on the car. 8 years old Even though has very good rear view back up camera, the sides at the rear hatchback area quarter panel are major blind spots the camera does not pick up and should be glass. Also the wind shield trim at the sides is too wide as creates a blind spot too. The rear hatch back door opener is a joke. First I cannot understand why you cannot open the hatch back from the driver compartment, and the rubber opener outside on the hatchback door you press deteriorates, rendering the rear open feature useless with no other way to unlock unless you crawl to the very back to pull the emergency lever opener. front door is way too long and creates problems getting out in tight parking spots like a larger truck, kind of strange for such a small car. 4 shorter doors are better. sun glass holder push and open style already is broken, spring latch is more dependable or some other style. Warranty sounds great but is a bit of joke too, my transmission gave out at 49k, Was well within the drivetrain 100000 10 year warranty but hyundai first claimed I was not the original owner so warranty was null and void. I bought the car new, gave them the paper work to prove it. Could not figure out how they came to the conclusion I wasn't the original owner. Even after I proved I was the original owner it still took them 7.5 months to get my car back on the road, nothing but run around from hyundai to me and the dealership. No help from them at all. Horrible service. I once had to get some items out of my car while it was at the dealers as I did not expect it to be there that long. While the service advisor was walking me to where my car was parked, he showed me 4 other velosters with transmission problems, one was brand new that conked out on a test drive! It seems like hyundai is having problems they do not want to own up to. After I get the car back finally, it stalls in the middle of an intersection during rush hour. Had to get it towed back, turned out to be a faulty crankshaft sensor. Now it is running fine but the touch screen does not work, dealer said the radio component failed and needs a whole new info center. Unreal. That is why I give it 2 stars. Lousy transmission, lousy warranty service from Hyundai and too many parts breaking after only 50K on the car. The tires that come stock on the car are junk too. I was getting major drift on straight roads, kept me on my toes when driving. The steering alignment checked out, when I had to replace the tires presto no more drift. Other than that it is nice.... if you keep it about 40k

Great looks POOR quality
Car looks great, useful and performs better than expected. BUT at 52K miles all injector coils had to be replaced costing over a thousand dollars (electrical not covered by warranty). At 82K miles tie-rods had to be replaced another $500+ and at 83K miles trunk release stopped working unknown cost just happened. I had 2 Pontiac Fieros and a Mazda Miata each with over 100K miles and combined costs for repairs did not equal this car. Never again will I buy a Hyundai.
My very first Hyundai
I was looking for on a car: gas efficient (35mpg +), gasoline engine, no turbo, comfortable for 70 miles commute, daytime driving lights, auto on/off headlights, Bluetooth/music streaming with good sound, manual transmission, good warranty, affordable insurance, a different look and most important, a total package for the price. Tested several 2013 models in 4-door and 5-door configurations from all different auto companies; some great, and others not so. I wanted something different. Just when I was about to give up on my search, my wife suggested to test a Hyundai. I have several friends who own them, heard all the good and bad things about it, and yet never consider driving one myself.
Drove it home today
I bought a black base with manual adding both the style and tech packages. I purposely drove it over bumpy roads to see how rough the ride really is. It really isn't. I traded in a 2012 Focus with only 12K miles, a tiny Sync screen with very complicated controls, the sh*ttiest plastic hubcaps on 16" tires, and an automatic transmission that made the Ford feel practically epileptic at times. Very happy with this Hyundai. Back up camera rocks, Bluelink is nice, Sirius is great, PLENTY of pep in the manual, and overall just a solid, roadworthy feel. Still getting used to the front end styling, but because of how nice and quiet the interior is, I'm almost oblivious to the eclectic exterior
Zip, zip, zippy!!
My husband and I absolutely love this car! After driving suv vehicles the last ten years I had forgotten that a car could be fun to drive. This car is a blast!! Ours is white and we get loads of compliments on it. We primarily purchased it to save on gas costs as we are constantly driving our son to tennis tournaments around the state. It has more than enough trunk space to hold all his tennis gear and our baggage. We do live in a rural area and I will say that you do feel any bumps in the road and I would not recommend it for any unpaved roads as it sits very low to the ground. Would definitely purchase another one in the future, especially the turbo version because it would be even more fun than our little "zippy" which is quite light and quick. By the way my husband is 6'2 and has ample headspace and our son is 5'11 and is relegated to the backseat. My son does say the only thing he dislikes about the car is getting in and out of it. My husband and I view it as a little extra "exercise" in our day.

Turbo'd Up!
If this isn't the best car for the money than I guess im wrong. For real I am so dang satisfied with this mini beast that I don't really know where to start. Tech yes. Driveability yes. Acceleration yes. Handling yes. I see challengers mustangs and camaros looking over like [non-permissible content removed] that thing is cool. I step on it and once that turbo lag is gone I am too. If I can say one thing... Natural aspirated veloster is my other car but turbo is where it's at! I've put 10k miles on a turbo with 25k

Cannot wait to get rid of this car
I am single-handedly keeping my local mechanic in business. Every month there is a different issue. Have spent over 5000 on repairs this year. Do not recommend.
Car on Fire 🔥
I, along with my Sister, my niece and my friend drove 14 miles to the beach from my mother’s residence. After, we decided to drive back to my mothers residence. While driving on the freeway with my sister, my niece and my friend, going 70mph I started to smell smoke, shortly after that I heard a clunking sound followed by a popping sound come from underneath my car. Then my check engine light along with my engine oil pressure light began to flash. Shortly, a burnt smell completely filled the inside of my car. As I began to pull over the brake peddle locked in the up position and was not able to be pressed down to the floor. After, I pulled the emergency brake causing my car to spin in an 180 degree angle. My friend and I got out of my car, leaving all of our personal belongings and pushed the car to the shoulder of the nearest exit. When I attempted to open the hood white smoke and flames shot from underneath. My sister immediately grabbed my niece and after that we all ran to a safe distance incase of an explosion. An off duty officer immediately called Highway Patrol after witnessing the entire incident. The fire department came and put out the fire. Next, Highway Patrol came, they did not write an incident report but they ensured our safety. Then finally the tow truck came and took my completely burnt vehicle to the tow yard.

Not all it's Cracked Up to be.
This car is slow, cheaply made, and the electronics have no reliability or real build quality. I have owned the car since new and will never buy another Korean made car again. The only thing that was ever good about this car was the sound system and navigation; and both of those no longer work/speakers blown considering i never listen to any music or radio over about 3/4 volume limit. Car looks great from the outside if kept clean to the average 13-16 year old.

rod bearing
bought the car new with lifetime power train warranty, as long as all service work was done at the dealership. I did this. at 124K miles lost power and a noise from the the engine. the rod bearing wasn't getting enough oil. had to replace the motor a problem with the 2.0 and 2.4 motors, not the 1.6 (what the Hyundai facture rep told me). the dealership was sold twice and the powertrain warranty was no longer.

No dealer support
For over three years I have had intermittent starting problems with my 2014 Veloster. I have had it back to the dealership numerous times and been charge a diagnostic fee for finding nothing. I replaced the battery (at my cost) which didn't solve the problem. When it took it back they have replaced the alternator, fuse box computer, & corroded wires, had the vehicle for at least a week at a time and are telling me it's my fault because 1. I don't shut it off properly. 2. I "play" with the fuse switch. 3. I don't drive it enough. Now they are telling me there are NO cranking amps in the battery and it needs to be replaced at my cost AGAIN. They have completely ignored me when I tell them that the CD player has stayed on all night. The dash display stays on all night or won't come on at start up. The radio re-sets the stations, the clock re-sets to 12:00 every time it is shut off, sometimes the dash display works sometimes not and it will often start after trying to crank it three or four times but only if the dash display energizes. It also on occasion decides to lock me out completely and not recognize the key fob. I can drive it for a half an hour, do my shopping and come out to find it dead. I can put the battery on a trickle charge for 48 hours and it reads charged, but the car won't start the first time. After two or three tries it might start. Otherwise a quick boost and it starts immediately, no waiting for it to charge up. The dealership couldn't care less even though it did the same thing to the service technician the second last time it took it there. The car was warm and driven for 40 min. but it wouldn't start for him first time. Took three or four tries, yet now I get this it needs a new battery jive. I'm feed up with the attitude that I'm some stupid woman who doesn't know the difference between a dead battery and a dead short to ground that is causing all these electrical problems. I will take the battery back to where I bought it and have it tested.

Veloster No
I own a 2014 hyundai veloster & after owning previously two other reliable hyundai cars, I have to admit this is a reliable car but it is also really annoying! My friends and i have complained that the door is too heavy ( it is the weight heavier than a truck door!) and when you swing it open if it is too pushed hard-it hits other cars or slams too wide, and when opened with normal verocity ( it swings back for a bit then squishes your leg), a lot of people i know have complained! Secondly, the car is TOO WIDE- it is impossible to park in a small compact space, even though this car looks compact and small. The designers and makers of this car were clearly not smart.
AC stopped working, leak occurred at 60,000miles
just today after parking heard a noise sound like air is coming out through a small hole. After turning AC, it is not cooling, I think refrigerant is leaked. With this new issue occurred, I decided to write a negative review. It was my first new car, I bought it with a hope that I will have no expensive repair issues for at least 100k miles. Turns out that having a new car is as many repairs as for used one but more expensive. Sad!

Buyer Beware
Bought a 2013 Veloster in December 2012. Never owned a Hyundai anything but was struck with the MPGs, and the tech and sport package as well as the car's design. Then...problems and more problems. The car would stall and cut off on me constantly. Took it to the dealer they "couldn't duplicate the customer's concern" 6 times taken to the dealer! The car would cut off on me on the freeway, surface streets, gas stations you name it it stalled and cut off. I didn't realize that Hyundai was selling prototypes? I needed a reliable car...and this ain't it! Buyback here I come. Oh, btw beware of the Arbitration clause that you must do if you don't "opt-out" with 90 days of purchase.
Veloster Turbo's craze
Love this car to death!!! I can't find but one thing wrong with it... The freaking resale value!

The sporty looking car
This car can catch the eye of young drivers. Looks like a small sports cars and drives well when hugging the turns. Not great in accelerating but this was expected. Great on Gas!!!!! A big plus and travels well on the highway. A good vehicle if you are concerned about your budget.

Modifications are necessary
It’s not a good platform but if the 1.6L has cold air intake, bov and intercooler upgrade and a full car back exhaust the car can be tuned for a rather fast car hp is 270 hp and it will be more fun to drive but car needs to have some suspension add ons and performance this is not the most aftermarket friendly vehicle most modifications are in the 500-1500 price range

Engine replacement at 159k
I replaced the turbo twice within the past 2 years.its a daily driver but im not racing buy no means. I drive safe and carefully. The highest speed i have drove in this car is 85mph. I have spent about 5k in repairs with my local mechanical shop. I took it to my local hyundai dealer and the price for the se maintenance was much higher. I'm pretty sure i will never i mean never get another hyundai ever in my life. Alot of people may think well its how you drive and maintain your car for it to last. I got regular on time maintenance work done. Tires rotated, oil change, belts changed, bearings changed , and even just make sure the car is good checks. Man this is ridiculous and just plan out fuatrating. I owe 3k on my 2014 veloster and has spent 5k when i initially bought it for 10,500. I even purchased the extended powertrain motor combo warrenty for 2k. I feel as of now, i should be able to sue or perhaps get the police involve. Yea it should be against the law to have to maintain a car thats not even worth that much. I cant believe this is the world we live in. 8k to replace a motor. That havent even reached 200k miles. Are you kidding me with these good reviews. Give it sometime and you will see. Dont do it. I feel like i need to start a protest to ban hyundai for making anymore cars or at least give the people there money back. Smdh

Nice little automobile
I purchased this car new and paid MSRP although the dealer gave me a good trade value. I was “shamed” into buying the $1500 extended warranty based on how much they gave me for my trade. During the past four years, I have taken it back to the dealer for service and when I question them on whether a recommended service is covered by the purchased warranty, they indicate they don’t show me covered. Then the sales dept looks it up and tells me that I am covered and when I need it, it will be there. Not very reassuring. Since then, my touchscreen has quit working. Other than that, the vehicle has been a very good purchase and I am very pleased with it.
