My wife had her 2007 Honda CR-V for almost 10 years and 140,000 miles and loved it. It never gave us a day of trouble--not one--and she didn't even mind that it was loud and rough and crude. Based on this, I assumed that when it was time to upgrade, she'd go with the car she felt comfortable with. Nope. She drove a new 2016 CR-V and was pretty surprised that it hadn't evolved at all. In a field of competitors, Honda had done nearly nothing to improve on a car that has fallen further and further behind. I'm shocked that it remains a top pick for small SUVs. I chose a few cars for her to sample. She really liked the Subaru Outback and the Hyundai Santa Fe, but then she drove this and fell in love. It's got a taut but smooth ride, a comfortable and quiet ride, great safety features, easy-to-use technology, and it's kind of gorgeous. There's a LOT here to love. My only complaint (it doesn't bother her at all) is that transmission everyone is talking about. By all accounts the problem is much worse on the base model, but even here on the top-line Limited it's odd. The transmission doesn't know what to do in certain circumstances, and feels unsettled until it gets it legs under it. It does concern me, but the 100k warranty soothes my brow a bit. All in all, it's a pretty great if imperfect car, and I was unable to find a better value anywhere.

I wanted to love this car....but...one week after having it I was on a canyon in California it began overheating. I pulled over as prompted to let it cool down, went to the dealer was told there was nothing wrong must have been a fluke. This morning back on the canyon had to pull over due to my 2016 overheating....back to the dealership and was told it is operator error. I'm causing the car to overheat with the stopping and starting...WHAT?? I apply the break when stopped and accelerate when I need to move forward....and that is the cause of this? While the technician was explaining this I began video taping his explanation...he stopped and told me I needed to speak with his manager. The manager told me there was not need to tape the conversation, the car will overheat if it's in stop and go traffic and there is nothing they can do about it. "That's the way Hyundai's are made" ......Ummmmmm.....what? This came from the Keyes Hyundai in Van Nuys.

I have now owned my 2016 Tucson for 7 months, and it's going strong. We have had an unusual winter here in Vermont this year. We have not received much if any snow, and had a lot of slush and ice. I wasn't sure how the Tucson would handle and it's been great. I live on a dirt road, and find that dirt roads are especially challenging with ice mud and snow. Mud season has come early in Vermont, and a few times when navigating thru the mud, I felt the Tucson wasn't handling well, I turned on the 4 wheel drive and it did great. My gas mileage didn't go down too much during the winter months, that too was a nice surprise. I still get compliments on what a great looking car it is, and often people don't know what it is.

Despite Transmission Issues

Updated 9/2017: After much heartache and difficulty in working with the dealer and manufacturer, it appears that Hyundai has finally resolved the transmission issues found in early model Tucsons. We have not had a problem in the months since the most recent major software upgrade. While I'll admit that my confidence in the vehicle has been weakened by our previous experience, I am cautiously believing that we will now be able to keep this vehicle for the duration. It is also my understanding that those units manufactured after the initial production run did not experience transmission problems to the degree that many of the first available units did. As stated in my original review, we love the new features and really enjoy the size of this model. If no further problems arise, we will be very content with keeping it as our main family vehicle. We want to love this redesigned Tucson. We actually traded a 2014 model to get the upgrades included in 2016. However, after owning the car a year, we can firmly state that we would not purchase it again. After less than two months of normal driving, we began to experience the huge delay and hesitation in shifting from a stop. More than a few times, I felt that my safety was in serious danger. We took the vehicle back to the dealership multiple times to address the issue, but they did not appear to take our complaints seriously until we escalated the problem to the corporate level. At less than six months, our vehicle got an entirely new transmission replacement. It had literally been in the service department a quarter of the time that we owned it. We were very hesitant to accept the "resolution" of a new transmission, however we decided to give it a try. Another six months later, we have begun to experience the same issues again, particularly if the A/C has been turned on right after starting the vehicle. While the Aug. 2016 software update has yet to be installed, we are extremely disappointed in this vehicle. Our feeling is that there will continue to be "updates" for the life of the vehicle. We do not recommend it to anyone, because the time and energy spent trying to fix these MAJOR safety issues is not worth it. We firmly believe that someone will end up getting critically injured in one of these vehicles, resulting in a class action lawsuit.

After driving the wheels off my current 10+ year old car I decided to test drive the Tucson. I researched for months before even setting foot onto the dealership lots. I was looking for an affordable, safe, fun, yet reliable SUV that I can depend on for 10+ years. The Tucson reviews were mostly good but many told tale of the ever dreaded DCT and dangerous lag in acceleration. However, I wanted to see if these claims were true and give the Tucson a fair chance. I test drove both a Limited and Sport model, for trim level comparison purposes. The Sport model is not as stripped down as you would expect but you get a lot of bang for your buck in the Limited. The 1.6L Turbo engine is in both models and is adequate but underpowered. Steering feels light giving the SUV a sporty drive. The technology is impressive and the interior feels upscale. However, like previous reviews warned, you begin to run into problems with the DCT. This car comes equipped with a Dual Clutch Transmission. These three words are often associated with reliability problems. During the test drive when going to accelerate from a stop there is a definite 2-4 second lag. No get-up and go. At the dealership they will tell you this is all due to the turbo lag. However, there seems to be more to this issue than meets the eye. The DCT is a hazard, something Hyundai defiantly needs to improve. Noted by other reviewers and those who actually purchased the Tucson, after months of driving the lag off acceleration only increases. This is a dangerous engineering malfunction. You simply cannot get out of the way of oncoming traffic. Some claimed while they are in drive they experience a feeling like the car is in neutral with the rpm in the red but there is no movement off the line. I waned to believe these claims were not true but even during the test drive it was impossible to turn a blind eye to the obvious issue. It is not one to be overlooked if safety and reliability are top priorities to you. Hopefully Hyundai will fix the issue in later models as I suspect minor software updates cannot save the current models. If you are still bucking for a Hyundai Tucson I would advise you to hold out until these issues are fixed and buy a later model or look elsewhere for an SUV. I choose the latter and left the dealership with my money and no dangerous DCT. Good luck and happy car buying!
