Great Car
I have really enjoyed owning my Sonata GLS. The few problems with the car Hyundai covered the costs of repair under their 5 yrs/60,000 mile warranty. And they extended that warranty by 2 yrs/24000 miles because of the horse power class action. The car is quiet, rides smoothly and is a good size, not to big, but carries four adults in comfort. I added after market leather interior, and wood trim for the dash, door/arm rest. And Chrome TSW 16 inch wheels, looks great with the bright silver paint. I have 76000 miles on my car. I am the second owner of this vehicle, I bought the car with 9,000 miles on the odo. Still after nine years of ownership I still really love driving my Sonata.
Good car for the price range
We purchased our car in 2002 with 50000 miles on it. We haven't had any major problems with it. The engine still has lots of pep after 78000 miles and the AC is ice cold. Our Sonata has tons of features that other cars in it's price range can't touch. The interior feels classy and it rides smooth. It has been a great car for us.

Doing well
I'm the third owner, but I bought and replaced the engine with a fairly used engine(2nd hand). over 160,000. Drives good. Normal maintenance. but it seem to have some electrical issues. Clock comes in once a while when I change to my spare key. Speedometer comes once in a while. interior still intact just the driver seat a lil worn out. Bright silver is the colour. Its roomy, A/C powerful. Suspension fine. brakes are powerful. Drives good. Its GLS with leather interior. but has 2.0 not 2.4 or 2.5 V6 CC manual engine. 4 cylinders, Powerful headlights. Origin : Germany

Waste of Money!!!
I bought this car from my brother less than a year age, it doesn't even have 80,000 miles on it yet and the sub-frame has rotted out and has become undrivable. I don't understand how a car company can get away with using material that can get rotted out so quickly and pose a hazard to the people's safety like that. I have had older cars that did not have these problems. On top of that I am having transmissions problems with it as well and my power window motor is fried. If I knew then what I know now I would have not bought the piece of junk. Hyundai should be ashamed and I am glad that I did not get in an accident with my children in the car due to this problem.
Hard to Believe
It's amazing that I love this car as much as I do. I have always been a foriegn car owner because the car needs to be able to handle 200K miles in 5-6 yrs. with no major problems. So far my Sonata is living up to it. The engine isn't "peppy"...its powerful! The body and general feel of the car is solid and the handling is smooth and precise. Sincerely thinking about trading in my Mazda 626 to get another Sonata!
Very Dependable Vehicle
I've had this vehicle for approximately 9 years and it has been a good value for the money. I've never had any problems with it and will definitely buy another one when the time comes. The only drawback that I can think of is the manual shift, 4 cylinder doesn't have much power. Other than that, I love the car.
That darn ABS/TCS light!
ABS/TCS lamp comes on in damp wheather (when you really need the TCS). Dealership can't figure it out. Trans has blow in & out speed sensors (seperately) and neither was covered under warrenty ($200 a pop!). Trans blew internal solenoid. Dealer repaired under warrenty minus $$ for trani flush. "Intelligent" transmission is actually pretty dumb. Shifting is usually sluggish and its gear choice bogs the engine down too much. Front grill design...is pretty absent. ...Looks like that guy didn't show up for work that day.
Loved this car!!
We bought our 2000 Hyundai Sonata brand new and still have it. It has 174,000 miles on it now. It's a great car!
Not Bad for the Money
Good reliable transportation. I beat this car like a red headed step child. Lots of high speed, jack rabbit starts and idling. Excellent Heat and A/C. 30MPG also. Have had problems: Both Front windows stopped rolling up (cause was Nylon Wear Strips), Both rear wheel bearings, 3 camshaft position sensors, EVAP purge valve, lastly major engine oil leaks. 84000 miles and still under warranty. 4cyl w/5 spd.
Good car for smart price
Good car for smart price
When it gets to 100,000.....sell it.
The car runs great..... its very confortable and its worth the money you pay for it. The things that went bad on my GLS V6 were: power window$450, sun roof$500, valve cover gasket$400, wheel bearings$600(both rear wheels). I have spent a lot of money on it....but after 100,000 miles what do you expect.
2000 Sonata
Only problem is the right rear window motor has gone out a few times. Extremely reliable vehicle.
My hyundai
Well. i got my hyundai sonata from this man who said he bought it from a lady who had it for years, APPARENTLY, she didn't take care of it. I end up getting spark plugs, diff. fuel lines, fuel pump, catalytic converter and many tires. Paint is fading. Transmission is slipping. got my bushings & tie rod replaced on the passenger side, JUST A LOT. luckily i didn't have to pay for anything but the fuel pump (: STILL A LOT OF WORK. I'm ready to switch cars.
Steaming in the South...
I liked this car at first, then at 66,00 miles , just out of warranty, it broke down. I paid for a new crankshaft ($975.00),then after two weeks, it broke down again, new timer belt, timer ($500.00), after three weeks it wasn't running again, this time it was a pulley (449.00, $300 just for the mechanic to tap the bolts back into the engine block!) The cassette player broke after warranty expired, and paint started chipping off the sides, and I live in the South. The sonata still drives funny, I think it might be the trans. I drive this car with kid gloves, I know longer feel confident in these cars. I am going to trade it in asap.
Stay away.
I bought this piece of junk in 2002 from the original owner at 11K miles. It started troubling a week after the purchase, from the minor power window break. Then I had to visit dealership about 10 times to fix the symptoms from check engine light to stall on the road. 4 months after new car warranty expired, it now refuses to accelerate, which was fixed 2 years ago. Don't believe Hyundai's good rating. I believe you would regret if you did.
Vic's Silver Sonata
This is good vehicle to own, very nice interior and exterior. The price and the warranty were very attractive to to me. I'll never buy another Camry. Cant wait to get my hands on the beautiful 2003 sonata.
Beware of 2000 Hyundai Sonata
I had transmission replaced the first year I purchased the car when it would skip by the second gear. The transmission again was replaced in year 3 and again in year 4. The 10 year warranty was the main selling point when I purchased the Sonata, but I don't think it would've lasted that long. Thank God I got rid of it before the five year comprehensive expired.
1st new car
When we bought this car we wanted something more roomy than a compact yet still somewhat economical. We were impressed with the ride, handling and especially the warranty. The only regret (besides buying new) was selecting the 4cyl, 5 spd combo. While the manual is fun to drive, it gets old in town. The car has pep for a 4 cyl, but not quite enough to gamble with. The combination of the two proved almost deadly on one occasion. My advice to anybody buying a new Sonata, Get exactly what you want first time around because you'll lose tons of money trying to trade it in. Maybe someday Hyundai will have a better trade in value. It's a good car to KEEP.
I'm disappointed!!
i bought this car brand new.had no problems with it. bought another car and gave it to my daughter 1.5 yrs ago. she had the tires changed and found a huge hole in the subframe rusted from the inside out. the car has 106000 miles and Hyundai will not fix it. i have never heard of a 6 year old car frame rusting through in half. my daugher could have been killed. i trusted my Hyundai. it is definitely a faulty parts problem.
Its a Korean Miracle
When you ride on a Sonata 2000 is a big change from the predecesor models. It runs soft and quiet. One thing of many I like most is the fuel efficiency on road, specially on this times of high fuel prices.
A Great Car - A Great Surprise!!
When I first took a test drive I fell in love immediately. The handling was smoothm the shifting was easy and the ride was comfortable. An the power - at 170 HP it purred and was so smooth. I love this car. Gas mileage could be better but is it comparable with others in it's class. The styling is great and I would favorably compare it to the Honda.
My Sonata 2000
I don't believe I have had a bad experience with this car.
???
after 28000 miles a new transmission was put in. many problems relating to trans. now it approaching 40000 miles is showing agian signs of another trans. electrial problems also was about 25000 miles. over all very dissatified with this car. bought it for the warrenty and plan of getting rid of it before it is up.
My new "used" Sonata
I cannot say enough great things about my 2000 Sonata GLS V6. It has everything you could want in a automobile!! It is extremely comfortable, quiet and fun to drive! I am a true believer in the Hyundai line. I am not the only Hyundai owner in my family. It you have any doubts in the product go test drive one! You will be impressed!
Surprisingly, a great car!
My wife and I bought this car to accomodate a new baby. Two door vehicles just weren't cutting it as he got heavier and heavier. We needed a four door vehicle, but didn't want the huge payment to go with it. We searched and found this. I'm a skeptic, but when I drove it, this car handled surprisingly well. It was tight, comfortable, and had all the room of a full size sedan. We love it.
Low Expectations to Begin With
Purchased for only $15k, so expectations were low. Few problems first couple years, little by little minor things started to break (visor, carpet clips, plastic covers for seat belts, trunk console hinge, pwr window components, door lock, exterior handle, etc.) With 55,000 miles, tires wore out, front brakes and rotors...not bad at all. At 58,000 miles, rear wheel bearing goes....mech inspected others and they are ok for now. $250 for repair. All and all, not bad in terms of how much I am spending, I'm just amazed at how many things have failed on the car. I hear the newer models are made better....can't cost that much to make plastic components thicker to prevent breaking, etc.
Will Never Buy a Hyundai Again :)
I have had problems with this car from the minute I drove it off the lot. Discovered an oil consumption problem when there was no oil in the car after 1000 miles.According to Hyundai specs it is acceptable to burn a quart of oil per 1000 miles in a new car. I tried to get them to fix this problem under the warrrany but they refused. I was very dissappointed in the corp. They finally admitted and fixed the problem at 60,000m when in the shop (for another problem) it was discovered that the piston ring gaps were lined up. Also numerous power window problems, wheel bearings, new catalytic converter, check engine light constantly coming on. Have had enough it is time for this car to go!
sonata gls
it is a good car alland all, very solid feeling, cruises at 85 with no problems very smooth and quite
I LOVE MY 2000 SONATA!
Original owner of 4cyl 5-spd model and get 32/45 mpg after 5 years/68,000! Interior is roomy & comfortable for long road trips; handling is agile; a/c is ice-cold. Timing belt tensioner failed when I was thousands of miles from home, but dealership in Buffalo, NY quickly took care of it under warranty and put us back on the road to finish our vacation trip same day. Local Houston dealer has handled recalls and other warranty matters very well. Price & warranty got me to try it (always a Toyota buyer before). I'd buy another Sonata & have recommended to others!
A realistic evaluation
We purchased this car when gas was expensive. It is very similar in size and displacements to our '99 Camry. This car is not a Camry, but is still a good solid car. A lot of the reviews of people really don't seem to understand that owning a car involves some preventative up-keep. I've had to have timing belts and brakes on both. Toyota Camry is the GOLD standard. But that isn't to say the Sonota isn't a good, solid vehicle. (It's probably not fair to compare the two. I've heard the new Sonata's are closer in feel to a Camry.) I would have no reservations buying one. The car is very similar in ergonomics, design, and power to my old '96 Accord. Thanks for reading.
Brake, Brakes, Brakes and more Brakes
Problems I have encountered 1. 16,500 miles some type of sensor caused the car not to idle when I put gas into the tank 2. 19,803 Front brake rotors resurfaced 3. 25,598 Front brake rotors resurfaced 4. 33,204 Front brake rotors replaced, pads replaced 5. 44,688 Front brake rotors resurfaced 6. 44,688 Rear shoes replaced 7. 45,000 door speaker stopped working 8. 48,000 Driver widow cable came of track and stopped working 9. 53,000 Passenger widow stopped going up all the way 10. 55,00 Driver window now making popping noise when I role it up 11. 55,000 The hood has rusted from the inside out
EBST DEAL AROUND
Was nery impressed with the quality and thevalue. Went to buy a Honda after driving the Sonata, we were sold. Has been great good performance and good milage. i will be buying another Hyundai, you can take the high price image cars and junk them, if I'm going to race I need a race car not a wanabe.
2000 Hyundai Sonota sub frame rot
I bought this car with 11000 miles on it. Overall it has been pretty reliable until about 75000 miles I have had to replace all the wheel bearings. Now at 86000 miles the sub-frame is rotted from the inside out. This is the first time I have ever seen a sub frame rot on a vehicle less than 14 years old. It is a shame that Hyundai will build a car that the sub frame rots from the inside out. This is very dangerous and costly to repair.
waste money for a 35k miles 2000 sedan
I bought this car from a first owner, then I lost the 100k miles warranty. Rear wheel bearing, left front shaft, oxygen sensor, mass air flow sensor, tps sensor, front disc breakes worn out at 45k miles too much money to spend for a 70k miles car. Speed transmision sensor dealer said $500 plus 105 diagnostic fee. Crazy waste money. I drove this car by 20k miles and I have been spended at least 1500 dollars in parts and labor. So the fabricants are supposed to put some recalls for this car. The people who knows about cars doesn't recomend me Hyundai or kia any more. I don't understand how a company advertise 100k miles warranty for this car.
2000 Sonata, good for the money
We've beem pleased with the car. So far (we've driven it about 14,000 miles) the car has been great. The car drives well, has upscale features, and no maintenance problems so far. There have been several manufacturer recalls and the Renton dealership has been good to work with.
wheel barings
It's been a good car for the money. However, with less than 25,ooo miles on the car, and not quite 3 years old, both back wheel barings had to be replaced. I treat this car with kid gloves. NO wear and tear. This would indicate a manufactoring problem. And a dangerous one at that. It is a good solid ride, and I enjoy the car. The Hyundai towing service is excellent. They picked up my car in a matter of minutes and towed it to the nearest dealership to be repaired. The towing, and work on the car were free.
Warranty Issues
Please who ever may read this. Be extreamly Cautious to the Warranty in which Hyundai offeres. Beware that THEY chose whether to honnor the Warranty!!! I have less than 80,000 miles on my car and the engine blew. I've have had to Hire a Attorney due to Hyundai refusing to Honoring the Power Train Warranty. I maintained my car and have all the reciepts. But that did not matter in regards to Corp. Hyundai when it came to honorring the Waranty I have read other complaints online. You might want to check out Hyundai before you even purchase one!!!
Great Car
I bought this car in January with 22,000 miles on it. I have gone to Florida and back in it and I love this car. It is smooth and comfortable (as comfortableaas one can get driving over 3,00 miles). I now have 33,000 miles on it and it performs as well as it did when I bought it. I love the styling and the engine is quiet and smooth to deliver on the 171 horsepower.
GLS V6 with leather is not a bad value
The ride has seemed to have gotten firmer along with more wind noise since I've had it. Bumps in the road are very evident. It was kind of loud in the cabin to begin with but it's gotten worse as time goes by. Sometimes when it's very cold, the windows won't roll down. They fog up constantly if it's rainy, or snowy and/or cold. The heater MUST be set on just defrsoting the windshield or all the windows will fog up. That's a real flaw. The only things I've had to do is replace the "rear wheel" bearings and I've had to replace both front headlights. The only thing it's missing is a Moon Roof.
Disappointing...
Careful when considering the purchase of a Hyundia. Read the warranty restriction very accutely. At 60,000 miles be prepared to pay upto $1500 in basic service maintenance to keep the 100,000 miles powertrain warranty effective. (Timing belt must be replaced every 60K!) I have owned 3 hyundia's; Tiberon, Sonata, and an old Excel. It might be a great value up front but carefully calculate longterm operation costs and depreciation.
Never ending problem car
Unfortunately, I bought the cae used, so I didn't get the 100,000 mile warranty. At 50,000 miles driver's window mechanism went. I have since replaced all wheel bearings once and now a second on the rear, after only 25000 miles. There were no lugnuts for the spare donut tire. The capped lugnuts wont work. now at 100,000+ miles the car is always in the shop for various transmission and engine sensors. I have driven cars almost 200000 miles and never have replaced wheel bearings. This model should have been on a recall list. While the car drives and handles well, mechanically it is a piece of junk. The government should not allow vehicles like this into the country.
Very pleased
My wife and I have owned our GLS for 2 years now. We have had absolutely no problems. We are very pleased, to say the least. We were looking at the Camry and Accord, but opted for the Sonata. We could not be happier.
Pretty decent car, good value...
I am a satisfied Hyundai Sonata GLS V6 owner. Good value at purchase and also had a 0.9% APR in March 2000. Now about the car - seems well built, and there have been very few problems. It is now approaching 60,000 miles and I have only had to take it in to the dealer three times. Twice for recalls and once for a warranty issue related to the keyless entry and power windows. Runs well, feels solidly built, has decent power, reasonably quiet even at high speeds. Adaptive transmission drops the ball sometimes and shifts roughly, but otherwise there do not seem to be any engine or transmission problems yet. Front brakes replaced at 57,000 miles.
Bang for your buck
My Sonata has been great. I haven't had any major problems. It is a joy to drive. It is comfortable and has a lot of get up and go. I'm always approached by strangers who tell me that they love the styling and wonder how happy I've been with the car.
Very Satisfied
I have owned this vehicle for almost 4 years and have had zero problems. The only money I have spent on it has been routine maintenance. I enjoy driving it, and Hyundai (or my dealer) even covered fixing the heater fan even though it was broken because a mouse built a nest in it.
Great Value and Very dependable
I purchased my sonata in july of 00. I currently have 110,000 miles on the odometer. This has been the most reliable car I have owned to date. I would recommend this model if you are in the market.
Twice is to much
Transmission went at 78,000. The 2nd Hyundai Transmission to go. Have a 96 Accent & also lost a transmission after the 60,000 mile warranty. Just $2000. The last time and especially from this dealer. They could care less about your business. You might as well drive it until it croaks. You could not get a decent trade on a Hyundai if your life depended on it. Most don't even want a used Hyundai on their lot. Give it away or drive it until it drops.
Worth the price
I bought the car @ 64K from my sister, the original owner. I really had no major problems with this car until about 128K, and even in the past 3K miles I've had to replace (the original!) timing belt, serpentine belt, upper ball joint and crankshaft pulley (which I think was mechanics fault) I had several things replaced by the warranty, no problems-the most major one was the alternator. I think that the transmission is starting to go, and the performance has dropped a lot now, but @ 131K for a less expensive sedan, I don't think it's that bad. Up until 125K I absolutely adored this car, worry-free.
The 4 Cyl. needed smoother shifting.
I find that my Sonata doesn't shift smoothly between gears. The car is a great value in general. I have 58000 mi. on mine and it's still going strong. The Silver color paint is peeling, which isn't too great, and I garage it every night and use it just for pleasure.
