The 2016 Sonata Hybrid is AMAZING!
We have 2 other Hyundai ('07 Accent & '13 Elantra GT) and they've been good cars. We ended up with a Sonata Hybrid SE as a service loaner car and really liked it. It was getting 40+ MPG on the same driving mix that the Elantra GT got 28-29. We decided to make a change, trading in the Elantra GT and our '07 Audi Cabriolet. We opted for a Limited (for the leather interior, heated/cooled seats) with the Ultimate package (panoramic sunroof, 400W stereo, saftey gadgets). We got great deal! MSRP of $36K and we got it for under $30K. 900 miles so far and still 200 miles left on the 2nd tank of gas. I've seen as high as 56mpg reported on a few trips and consistently getting in the low 40s. Very quiet ride, it drives very sporty for its size, and the acceleration is very reasonable since the electric motor provides instant torque.

Fantastic MPG, exceptional comfort, 5 star safety
UPDATE**10/27/17 Best overall value. A UPDATE 2/26/16 still enjoy this wonderful car. Quiet, comfortable, luxurious and no visits to the dealership other than an oil change. 650 miles per tank and still 46 MPG's. Major gripe is that the blind spot monitors don't work below 19 MPH and that Android Auto update is STILL not available. So excited for Android Auto and can't hardly wait (even though Hyundai said they would have it to us by 2015. Feels like Hyundai could be doing more to light a fire under Google to get that to us. Also, and this might end up being a big one...something no one at Hyundai told me about when I bought the car, is that after 12 months of not subscribing to Blue Link, it self destructs and can not be turned back on unless you pay $500+ for a new head unit. That is crazy in my mind and apparently others as Hyundai is currently involved in litigation over this matter. I hope there is good resolution to this matter for unsuspecting Hyundai owners. EVERY HSH owner, PLEASE KEEP ASKING FOR ANDROID AUTO UPDATE! Original review** Fantastic MPG. Took possession of our new 2016 Sonata Hybrid Limited Ultimate with 8 miles on the odometer. What an amazing car! So far overall average MPG is 46.4 with my most recent 13 mile commute (50% freeway, 50% city) being 61.4 MPG per the onboard computer. Such a pleasure to be going down the freeway (most all of the time in pure EV mode) in a hushed cabin (trully as if a rolls or MBZ) all while achieving phenomenal fuel economy. Car drives and feels fantastic. Seamless transition of power plants. Even when the 2 liter internal combustion engine is operating in generator mode, it is quiet. Only when truly pushed does the engine come to life, but even then it is extremely reasonable, better than our Accord and the 6 speed transmission (thank goodness and finally, a hybrid with no CVT) provides you with great power. Imagine, a Hybrid with actual power! It is a wonderful car to drive and a safe car to drive. I highly recommend that folks seriously consider purchasing the Ultimate package. The parking aids, the active and passive safety is great. Lane keep assist is well calibrated and does not cry wolf. The adaptive cruise control is very well done and driver adjustable. The blind spot monitors are nice, but I do wish they would work at low speeds as well. The backup sensors and predictive backing monitor is absolutely a must have, city or suburbs. Last but not least, rear cross traffic alert should be standard on all modern cars. No one should be guessing if a car is approachi while backing out of a parking space. This car has it all. From a tech perspective, the 8" NAV screen is great. Fairly easy to use and with a lot of great Hybrid viewing modes. Only gripe I have about the NAV is the traffic. The XM data is not real-time and it lags far behind Google maps or Enricks. Despite this the display works very quickly and is very responsive. The ability to do split screen is nice as well. There are a whole host of subscription services, Blue Link and XM, which, but of course, eventually at a cost. The Blue Link phone app functions are especially nice. To be able to heat and or cool your, as well as send route plans to your NAV before you ever set foot in the car is great. In addition to that, to have the ability to check the health of your car, to find your car in a crowded parking lot after being gone on a long flight, to be able to set an electronic boundary for either a teenage driver or a valet, are all great features. You can of course, remotely honk the horn, flash the lights, unlock the doors, all from your smart phone. The ability to review telematics (driving style and performance measures) is also great, especially if you aren't sure how your teenager is driving when you are not there. So many features, but the best part is Hyundai's commitment to their buying public via their warranty. We cross-shopped Honda and Toyota, but neither were willing to back their Hybrid battery the way Hyundai is. LIFETIME! Yes, that's a lifetime Hybrid battery warranty, part and labor to replace the battery should it falter. This is in addition to their 10yr/100,000 warranty. I realize nothing can be guaranteed forever, but Hyundai sure does a nice job with making a customer feel like they are not alone when making a $30,000 plus purchase. Last but not least are the little details such as, actually having a true trunk with a 60/40 split. Such a nice and versatile thing for families. And the courtesy LED lights, hidden in the front door handles, make life just that much easier to enter your palace on wheels when the sun has set or you find yourself in a dark parking garage. Every little detail seems well thought out and well executed. Take it from someone who actually spent the money to buy a Sonata Hybrid and drive one. You will be very pleasantly surprised and happy you did. 46.4 MPG average so far and loving it.

Hyundai still the best bang for the buck!
Looking for a good fuel economy car to replace the CT200h. Need 40mpg+ in NYC traffic (CT did 42mpg average); comfortable seat with lumbar support; and a full speed (stop&go) adaptive cruise control (best thing for a daily 2 hours stop and go traffic!). That left us with Toyota Prius Four, Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, 2017 Ford Fusion Hybrid, 2017 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid and Audi A3 e-tron. Prius feel about the same to our CT with less comfortable seat and ugly styling. Ford Fusion ride a little too bumpy and interior design seem old. Both Fusion and MKZ have nonlinear brake pedal that feels odd. A3 is of course very European while comfortable. Sonata doesn't drive as impressive as A3 but Sonata is very quiet and the ride is very comfortable without being floaty. A3 got kick out because additive cruise only available on Prestige trim which cost $46k+ msrp plus it feels even smaller than our CT. Between the Sonata and MKZ we were able to get the loaded Sonata Ultimate for $27500 while MKZ would be at least $13k more so drive home the Sonata! The value is unbeatable; 40mpg average so far; huge sunroof sunroof, cooled and heated seat + heated steering + heated rear seats, Android auto, much more usable trunk (no hump and a full folding rear seats), 10yrs warranty with lifetime on battery, and no more CVT drone!

Excellent vehicle so far - Large mid size car!!!
Owned the car for 3 months and so far not a single problem. I have a long commute and the mileage has been great. While the Honda Accord says it get's better mileage the cost is quite a bit more!!??? Love the space - front and back seat and even the trunk with the battery is still very large. Wouldn't know the trunk is smaller, but the regular sonata's trunk is HUGE. The hybrid is big!!! Very comfortable. Some of the electronics - lane departure, collision warning a bit intrusive but better safe than sorry. Very good Car, plus the warranty as well as the lifetime warranty on the hybrid battery is wonderful. Only 8,000 but so far very happy. Owned the car for over 9 months. Not a single issue. The car has not seen a dealership for any warranty repairs. Regular oil changes only. I changed the Air filter and cabin filter myself - total of 5 minutes. Very easy to get to. A little wear on the drivers side seat, very little. Otherwise no problems at all. nearly 30,000 miles now. Have turned off the lane departure warning - just too annoying. Otherwise all electronics and safety stuff really good. Winter was getting around 36-37 on the highway now getting 42-44 on the highway. Would still recommend it to anyone!! Actually have recommended to many many people. Owned for the car for over 15 months now and not a SINGLE problem. No warranty or non-warranty repairs. Nearly 50,000 mostly high way miles. Mileage drops 15-20% in the winter - but part of that could be because I installed Blizzak tires. Not a huge issue but when you drive 160 miles 5 days a week every MPG helps or hurts. Would recommend this car in a minute.. AND have!!!!! Owned the car now for just under 2 years. Not a single warranty repair with nearly 70,000 majority of HIGHWAY miles. Mileage is back up to 41-43 on the freeway now that the weather is nicer. The car does burn between 3/4 and 1 1/2 quart of oil between oil change - mainly after the 1st 3500 miles after an oil change. Hyundai says this is normal. Not thrilled but can't really do anything and I know some cars use more.. Just find it crazy as my Suburban with 190,000 uses less. The drivers seat is starting to show some wear. Again, I think this is a bit early given that I drive longer distances. Still very happy with the car overall. Owned for over 2 years now have just over 91,000 miles. again mostly highway. Not a single issue!!! I have now owned the car the 3 1/2 years and the biggest issue is that is now burning oil 1 qt every 1,000 miles on average. Right after an oil change for the first 1100 to 1300 miles almost no oil is consumed. After that, 1/2 to 3/4 of a qt of oil every 500-800 miles. I am checking the oil all the time now. Had it to the dealer, which was very helpful, they worked with Hyundai that said that it is within spec. Crazy... MPG has dropped as well into the mid to upper 30's which is really disappointing. No other problems, however. As long as I can get another 24-30 months out of it, I guess I will be okay. Now have owned the car for over 4 1/2 years. In Sept of 2020, had significant driving issues. It was just outside of the warranty. After 4 months in the dealership for multiple repairs - some partially paid by Hyundai and some by me and some the dealership ate. Two engines, entire exhaust from front to back, multiple wiring harnesses, manifolds, etc. Not fun. It should now last for another 5-7 years for certain since everything is brand new. Well except for the transmission. Even though Hyundai paid part and the dealshipp ate part it still cost me nearly $4,000. Since my crazy repair story - things have calmed down - no issues at all. Car is driving great. Mileage is down a bit only getting about 34-36mpg in mostly city driving. Still good but not as good as during the first year - I was getting 40-41 mpg. Everything is holding up very well, interior is good shape; drivers seat is showing some wear but nothing crazy. I have now owed the car for 5 1/2 years. The mpg has gone down to the mid 30’s upper 30’s. From low 40’s. I now have cruise control issues which I need looked at. Otherwise, been great. Extremely roomy, still drives well, and everything else is holding up well. Have nearly 145,000 miles in it. Original brakes!!! Owned the car now for 6+ years - no new issues - car is running great. No new problems to report. Just keeping our fingers crossed that things continue this way for another few years since there was so much done previously. Did change the brakes just because, probably could of gone another 5,000 miles. 6.5 years of ownership - At 158,000 miles the water pump decided to not work. Through all kinds of codes. Took them 2-3 days to figure out it was just the electric water pump, which of course was not in stock. Once they got the part, installed no further problems. Still driving good and getting good gas mileage. Updated 8/15/24 - Car has just over 160,000 - no new issues still getting 40-43 mpg in mixed driving. Interior still wearing good.

Definitely get this car
I owned previously a 2012 sonata limited. Can't believe how much quieter and how the ride quality has improved on this 2016 sonata limited hybrid, I just purchased. With a 50/50 mix of driving, have been averaging over 40mpg. Love the way the car drives, Hyundai keeps making improvements. Interior is so much nicer, leather seats and comfort way better than the 2012 limited. Cabin layout, controls easy to use. Numerous safety features included. Trunk space almost the same size as the 2012, with the new placement of the lithium battery where the spare tire used to be, rear seats fold for longer items if needed. Hyundai is offering great rebates, best to get a hybrid now before gas prices go back up. Hyundai has really outdone themselves with the features offered on this car, even the rear door windows have shades you can raise to block the sun. With Hyundai's warranty, you can't go wrong. Had over 36,000 miles on my 2012 , never had any issues. Love the power memory seats. After 2 1/2 years of owning this car, have no regrets purchasing this vehicle. Gets great gas mileage on trips and around town. During the summer months consistently getting 45-46 miles per gallon. Have had no problems at all with the car. Great Hyundai Roadside assistance. Encountered a large screw that penetrated my one tire, within 15 minutes a tow truck was there to get me to a Hyundai dealership to patch the tire, great service. Can go over 600 miles on a full tank of gas. Would buy again. Now have owned my Hyundai Sonata over 4 years now and have not had any problems at all. Great gas mileage continues at over 40 miles to the gallon on trips. Very reliable car and would definitely recommend the Hyundai Sonata.

Wonderful Hybrid Vehicle Without The Compromises
I considered a first generation Sonata hybrid a few years ago, and I'm glad I waited. This is a great car that is leaps and bounds better than the previous model. The trunk space is improved, and the mileage is dramatically better. Great commuter sedan with 43 MPG overall so far. Love the heated and ventilated leather seats, and my kids also get heaters in the back seating as well with plenty of leg room. My wife appreciates the safety features and the lane/collision avoidance warnings, as well as the overall range well in excess of 600 miles. This is my 4th Sonata, and these cars just keep improving with each iteration. Purchased the limited without the ultimate package because I really have no use for a sunroof or built-in navigation. Only downside to this compromise is that the primary display is smaller than it should be, and sound system is just average. Great car, and even better with over 20% off MSRP!

After months of research, glad I bought this car
So I agree with previous reviewer, so wish I had the features and hybrid stuff with a small suv (this is my first sedan!) but having said that, quite pleased with this car. Will come back and add to this review as have only had the car for a day, but I agree that controls (and there are LOTS of them) are laid out well and intuitively. My only problem? Being able to tell whether the car is on or not, keep trying to drive only to discover the car isn't on all the way. We have a 2007 hyundai sonata in the family, and the 2016 hybrid makes it look sad and forlorn. Bigger than the 2007, an unbelievably roomy rear seating area, trunk is crazy big for a hybrid, and how can you not love those LED running lights? So spiffy looking, feels like driving a luxury car for a whole lot less money. So glad I got the limited (WITHOUT the ultimate package, I don't like sunroofs), ventilated seats are so nice and looking forward to the heated seats in winter. Just a great car all around. Okay Hyundai, let's give the Tucson way better visibility out the back and hybridize it, and I'll buy that next! PS - Okay, I'm back after owning the car for almost 2 months. Still loving it, and of course now know how to turn it off and on. Ride is quite smooth, averaging on a tank of gas anywhere from 38 to 43 mpg - very happy with that (am driving it almost exclusively in eco mood). Everyone I have ride in it is impressed, and the heated seats (my back was bothering me) work so well I had to turn them down! How nice that both the heated and ventilated seats up front have three settings besides Off! One caveat - while the trunk is big, the opening to it is not so much, so certain things I'd have liked to put in the trunk have ended up in my back seat. I'm guessing some of this is my adjusting to a sedan after a SUV. I'll come back to update again, still very happy with this purchase! PS Okay I'm back, have had the car for a few months now, continue to be really happy with it. Can definitely see the difference in mpg between highway and city - only getting 38 mpg or so with mostly city driving, but that's as advertised so I'm fine with that. Controls are so much easier than some other cars, very intuitive, and the comfort is terrific. I drive almost exclusively in eco mode, but really appreciate the zip in sport mode when in situations where I have to accelerate quickly. (Now August 2018) Edmunds was a huge help to me when I've purchased my last 2 cars, so wanted to give back by checking in a couple years in to owning my car. Previous car was a Subaru Forester - the visibility and cargo capacity were fantastic, but generally I wasn't thrilled - road noise a problem almost from the beginning, not as good in snow as I was expecting with all wheel drive, and wow did the repairs mount up, plus the rust. In any case, I've never owned a sedan, but really REALLY wanted a hybrid. This is the limited trim without the sunroof (I hate them) and I've been so pleased. It's so comfortable, I live in snow and the heated seats and heated steering wheel are great. Lovely comfortable ride, just super pleased with this car and it hasn't had barely a hiccup and I'm approaching 30,000 miles. I know with a hybrid the ground clearance isn't the best, and I've scraped bottom on several occasions. Also the window controls are weird - when lowering the window you have to reverse on the button to get it to stop which is annoying. I so wish the visibility is better, but I'm surprised how much the rear cross traffic alert helps in that regard. Really these are minor complaints - I'm really really happy with it so far, the MPG is terrific, if you can find one used I say go for it! But not mine, I'm driving this baby into the ground.... :-)

We love our new Sonata Hybrid
After telling people for the last 4 years how we loved our two Priuses, we were shocked while driving a Sonata at the dealership. We went to look at the Sonatas because they are beautiful cars and came away totally amazed at all of the features, the comfort, and the quiet of the Sonata. Prius is not even in the same ballpark as Sonata. I call our Sonata "our economy luxury car." We only paid an extra $1,000 more than the last Prius we bought, a 2014, and the Sonata feels like it is worth at least $10,000 more in features, beauty, quiet, safe, comfortable ride. I can't tell you how often my wife and I discuss how much we love our new Sonata. We bought the $35,000 Hybrid Limited loaded with all the features for $29,000 about 3 months ago and are getting over 40 mpg which is about 5 mpg less than our Prius was getting. We now have 36,000 miles on the 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and my wife and I still love it as much as when we bought it. We have had no problems with the car at all. We are still averaging over 40 mpg. The feature I like the most is the Smart Cruise that follows the car in front of us and slows or stops automatically when the other car slows or stops. It will even start back up at stop lights and match the cars speed in front of us. It warns us if someone is in our blind spot when we want to change lanes. It also warns us about cars coming from the side as we are backing up. And best of all, it will stop automatically if something gets in our way in front of us accidentally. It has saved us from a couple of accidents already. Those features are well worth the price for them. We also bought a 2017 Hyundai Sonata, which is our second car, and we will probably be buying a 2019 Sonata Hybrid to replace our 2016 Sonata Hybrid next year. They are great cars with outstanding features and at a reasonable price. We now have 24,000 miles on the car and still love it. We just bought a 2017 Sonata and now have two Sonatas, one for me and one for my wife.

Surprising Value
My wife and I had been looking at sedans, not particularly hybrids. We had narrowed it down to Accord, Fusion, Subaru Legacy Sonata and Optima. We finally decided to drive them, and went to the Hyundia dealer to drive a Sonata Limited. I was most interested in the Limited with the Ultimate package because it had just about everything on it that the car I was trading in had. The car I was trading in was a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland. We did not want to give up the heated and ventilated seats and the Sonata with the Ultimate package had those. Plus the Sonata with the Ultimate package has all of the up to date safety tech. Most people don't realize that the Accord with Honda Sensing does not include Blind Spot Monitoring. I definitely wanted that feature. Anyway we where in talking to the sales person after driving the Sonata Limited and my wife was looking around the show room and came back with a brochure for a Sonata hybrid. So we started talking to the sales person about the hybrid and he insisted that we needed to drive one because the driving experience was different. To make a long story a little shorter, we loved the hybrid and wound up buying a sliver one. What I really like about the hybrid are a number of things; it is very comfortable to drive and ride in and it is very quiet. The safety tech is very nice especially the SCC (Smart Cruise Control), I find myself using that feature all of the time. I only have about 300 miles on the car and I'm already getting around 44 mpg in mainly suburban driving. It seems to have plenty of pickup, although with only 300 miles on it I haven't really put that to the test yet. Plus with the drive modes, if you want more performance you can choose Normal or Sport. We live close the mountains just outside of Denver and I have had it on some winding mountains roads and it handles the curves very well. The only complaint that I have is that it does not have Apple Carplay. But I hook my iPhone to the USB port and that and the Bluetooth works well.

Really Surprised
I owned the 2013 Sonata Hybrid Limited. It had great pick up and handling with good gas mileage. It had just reached the 36,000 mile mark and I usually buy a new car by this point but, I was so happy with the 2013 that I didn't see any reason to change. Just for fun I agreed to drive the 2016 Sonata Hybrid Limited. I was really surprised at how many upgrades Hyundai had made with this model. Beautiful interior and even passenger side electric seats that heat and cool were added. I don't think the pick up is as good as 2013 but... improved gas mileage, heated steering wheel and multiple warning devices make this car amazing. A little light came on to tell me the pavement was at freezing temperatures. I lowered my speed. Another light came on to remind me to take my foot off of the accelerator. The navi system tells you what the speed limit is for the street you are on. Ok, as much as I loved the 2013, this 2016 is even better with a panoramic roof. It feels like luxury without the price tag. You will be really surprised when you drive this car. We are into August of 2017 and the car has about 15,000 miles. I still love this car and everyone who gets in is surprised at how roomy it is. The trunk is huge and with gas prices going up again it keeps becoming a better and better value.

2016 Sonata Hybrid Exceeds Expectations
We were looking for a good value all around in a family sedan. We were not interested in a pricey luxury car, which meant we looked at the Camry, Mazda 6, Accord, Altima, and Sonata. Things important to us were quiet ride, roomy, good fuel economy, good infotainment, reliability, and nice looks. I suppose the Camry would have been OK, but with so many around, we wanted something different. The Sonata Hybrid is re-designed this year (2016) with better looks and significantly improved fuel economy. It met everything on our list so we went with it. The Sonata Hybrid comes in three trim levels... basic, Limited, and Limited/Ultimate. I suppose if there is one disappointment, it is that to get the nice big infotainment screen (8") with navigation, you have to step up to the Ultimate package. We would have chosen the middle Limited package if not for this and saved about 4k. However, you get several other nice features with the Ultimate package including safety features such as front collision warning and lane departure warning. The infotainment package includes a premium sound system and Navigation system. All of these features are top notch and now that we have them, we are glad we went with the Ultimate package. Our last car we kept for 18 years, so we figured why not get all the bells and whistles and be happy with this car for a long time. Have had it now for 2 weeks and 1,000 miles (trip from Bay Area to Santa Barbara & back). We got over 42 mpg on the trip, which will probably improve as the car gets broken in. The car is a dream to drive... VERY quiet and comfortable. Controls are relatively easy to learn and everything works as advertised. It feels like luxury to us. All the ratings pointed to good reliability so no worries there. Consumer reports gives it an above average rating... better than the Altima, and Mazda 6; same rating as Accord. The hybrid system works very well and is completely up to date - battery is the new lithium-ion polymer type. Shifting between electric motor and gas engine is seamless. Six-speed transmission enhances fuel economy and is very smooth. The hybrid battery has a lifetime warranty. Hyundai's BlueLink is cool, with the ability to remotely start the car from your cell phone, find your car in a parking lot, and send navigation destinations from your phone in advance. I want to respond to the reviewer who noted the car has no spare tire. This is true... however it is a trend in the car industry to save space. The reviewer failed to mention the car includes an emergency flat tire repair kit - it has a compressor and repair compound. It looks easy to use... easier than changing the tire... and is designed to give you up to 50 miles of distance to get you to a tire repair shop. We have yet to find something we don't like about this car - we will update our review if we find something. For now we give the car very high marks for being a great value for the money. Updated comments as of 12K miles: we are still extremely happy with our Sonata Hybrid. Two small annoyances: First, Apple CarPlay upgrade is still NOT available, despite all marketing messages to the contrary. However the Hyundai infotainment, navigation, and voice-activated system is extremely easy to use and helpful - we are not missing any benefit by not having CarPlay. Second, the service notifications the car alerts us to are not accurate. The car needs service every 7500 miles, yet the service alerts are telling us to go in sooner. It's annoying, yet overall we are very pleased with the Car!

A very nice car besides fuel economy
I own three Hyundai cars, a 2007 Sonata, a 2016 Genesis AWD Tech, and this, a 2016 Sonata Hybrid Limited Ultimate. I bought the hybrid car for the economy, but to my pleasant surprise, the car is very quiet and comfortable for a car in this price range. At standstill, the car is completely quiet with no vibration like any other hybrid car. When cruising on the highway, I sometimes thought, "boy, this is almost as quiet as the Genesis." The gear shift as well as the switching of various modes of engine/battery hybrid system are unnoticeable. Other than the extreme quietness at idle, the car just move and ride like a very quiet six cylinder car. I was thinking about a Honda hybrid, but with the big discount and the generous warranty plan, it was a no brainer to choose Hyundai. I will be very satisfied with this purchase if the car has a reliability same as the 2007 Sonata.

More than just a good car for the value.
Got the Limited ultimate package in the Seaport mist/ beige color combo and could not be happier with this unusual car. Spacious with logical design such that I can easily learn and use all the features. The sunroof is to die for and the LED interior lights add a touch of modern sophistication. The engine feels so good that I forget it's a hybrid (I previously owned a hybrid Camry and Prius). It stays on EV much longer than I expected. The runners up where the kia optima (I do miss the extra sub ports, surround camera and folding mirrors, but I'm green and ok with the trade off.) and the Mazda 6 ( which I pine firm but wanted a softer ride and Apple car play). The safety tech like blind spot monitor works so well I can't imagine driving without it. Zero problem for my 6'2" husband. Other posters say it is a lot of car for the money and that always has a "good enough" ring to it. It is simply a great car. And as for prestige - well so far I've seen two colleagues sneak up on the car in the parking lot to see what it was. I'm sure they were smugly satisfied that it was not a BMW, but then again, so am I!

Great deal on 2016 Sonata Hybrid Limited
We have driven Prius and Prius V for the last 5 years. They are great cars with fantastic mpg. We were looking for a replacement hybrid and thought Hyundai might be it because of the reviews and features. Then we saw the sale of 2016s because the 2017s were coming in. We purchased a Limited for $24K. We wanted a car that was more comfortable and better at highway speeds. We looked at Accords, Camrys and Fusions. The Hyundai stood out because of the 2016 re-design. More room than the competitors and a great trunk. It actually has a large flat deck in the trunk. Comfort is outstanding with leather seats, lumbar support that can be moved up or down, and position memory. Heated and ventilated seats along with heated steering wheel are nice extras. The blind spot monitoring is great as well as the backup aid which lets you know if there is a car or someone approaching from the side as you back out of a space. Would like to have gotten the "Ultimate" tech package but I could not find it as dealerships had sold all they had. MPG is generally very good at 40 and acceleration to highway speeds along with solid feel are fantastic.

Great Value for the Money
I traded in a 2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid XLE for this 2016 Sonata Hybrid Limited. I liked my Toyota but I love this Sonata Hybrid! It has features of higher end cars (ventilated seats, panoramic sunroof, etc). It rides almost like a luxury car and I'm getting 44 MPG around town and I've only had it a week. It's fun to drive too and has plenty of pickup. It was a great value for the price. I looked at and test drove a 2017 Camry Hybrid and a 2017 Honda Accord Hybrid but the Sonata won out due to the price, features and handling.
- Performance
Mileage declined dramatically over three years.
I love the looks & body lines of this car. I have received many compliments. The limited with ultimate package offers many features that would cost thousands more from other manufactures. Mileage started from 40 mpg to 46 mpg depending on how I drive and what gas I use but now is 37 mpg to 42 mpg. Lower octane gas with ethanol gets lower gas mileage. The vehicle is very quiet, smooth, comfortable, ride. My 40 minute commute is much more comfortable in the Sonata then in my previous 2012 Toyota Prius 4. There is a lot more room. The audio, phone, & GPS controls work well although they don't always work flawlessly with my I-phone 7. I don't always like how the car shifts. At times it shifts awkwardly in the 2nd & 3rd gears. After three years of use and at 100K mileage had random misfire on cylinder 3 that was diagnosed as a bad fuel injector. Replaced all the fuel injectors and problem was still there. I believe due to the vehicle being GDI the intake was carboned up and causing the problem. The volume switch on steering wheel broke and needed replaced. Bottom heat shield just fell off one day. I went to trade and care worth nothing. Will not buy Hyundai again. Stick to Toyota or Honda.

2nd new 2016 limited ultimate in 9 months!!
We originally purchased the car for my wife to drive. It quickly became her favorite car ever with the features she loved. Vented seats, blind spot warning, automatic high beams to name a few. The mileage was fantastic performing way over the estimates, 47 mpg combined. Of course, you had to drive for mileage but that isn't a problem. We pick up our new one next week since our first one was totaled by a person of questionable intelligence cutting 3 lanes of traffic on a busy road. My wife was bruised and sore, but she walked away from the wreck. The car did it's job in keeping her from further harm. I am a rather large person and am able to get into and out of the car quite easily (no tow truck or crane needed). The seats are comfortable front and rear with plenty of head and leg room. My personal vehicle is an F-150 crew cab but I don't protest taking the car on longer trips, especially at the gas pumps! We enjoyed the car so much her replacement is a twin except in color. ***14.500 mile update: Just completed a 900 mile trip to Nashville at posted speed limits and a week of in town driving. Obtained 41.9 mpg round trip.

Impressed
Went from a Genesis Coupe to the 2016 Sonata Hybrid SE. The Sonata has a lot of nice features and it is very quiet, we call it the golf cart since in EV mode its really quiet. Measuring gas mileage the old fashioned way; miles vs gallons pumped, my first tank gave me mixed driving 42.2 MPG. My mixed driving is back roads, towns and I-95 traffic moving at just under NASCAR speeds with AC all the way. Daily drives using the computer, I have seen everything from 36 - 89 MPG at shut off. The car shifts smooth and you may not know if you are on battery or gas unless you look at your gauges. The car has three driving modes; eco, regular, sport and you can feel real differences in all of them. On another note this car gets the same gas mileage as my motorcycle ....

Great car, except for the hybrid engine problem
The 2016 Sonata hybrid is a great car; comfortable ride, good performance, handling, great safety features...they retrofitted Android Auto. It's been a great vehicle so far...until now. This year, hybrid system has conked out twice...car just dies and you have to pull over. First time, wife was close to dealer. Second time I pulled over, shut off engine, then started. Both gas and hybrid engines started but check engine light is on. Dealer has it; they have been great about it, giving us free loaners each time...but they need to find and fix cause; we are not confident in the hybrid reliability now.

Sonata Hybrid Limited
This car is extremely quiet, comfortable, and rides very well. Is somewhat sluggish in Eco Driving Mode but is getting a confirmed 45 MPG. Only negative I've found is the depth (height?) of the trunk because of the battery below.

Love Hybrid
Bought bare bones SE Sonata hybrid because a Limited was not available due to the excellent year end rebate. Nice quiet ride. Impressed with MPG which ranges from 40 to 50 mpg. Seems to get best mileage in city driving if you keep heavy acceleration to a minimum and coax the drive into EV mode. Would not have purchased a hybrid without the huge rebate but glad I did. Miss having the options I would have selected had they been available. Seems to be an excellent value.

Sonata - Simply the Best
If you enjoy traveling, this car is for you. It is not only the comfort and the smooth ride that you will enjoy but also the phenomenal gas mileage. Hey, anytime you can put $28.42 in your gas tank, drive 500 miles to your vacation destination and still have a quarter tank of gas (equal to another 150 miles) to cruse around town with, your doing good.

Toyotas No More
This is my second Sonata, and my first Hybrid. Got a very good deal on this car, in that I bought it from inventory as their last '16 Hybrid left on the lot. Really love this car. Expected to get 41 MPG typically, but getting closer to 44-50 in my suburban/freeway driving. Less on cold days (as low at 38 MPG) with the heater running. Better acceleration than I expected. Car doesn't know its a Hybrid apparently. Does anyone else tie the electric and gas engines together harmoniously other than Hyundai? Seems like a no brainer. Much smoother ride than my 2011 GLS. The shifting between electric and gas mode is seamless. That was a "wow". Really like the blue tooth voice dialing system. Works better than my wife's system. People have complained about the Blue Link navigation, but I have gotten used to it. Has pluses and minuses next to my wife's Honda Accord's built-in navigation system. My only complaint is that the battery went bad prematurely, but that might be expected when you buy a '16 at the beginning of the '17 model year. Would have been nice had it come with a spare tire. Overall though, much more than I expected for the price.

So Far SO good
Really enjoy it. My first hybrid, so I'm still getting used to the braking feel. The hybrid system is seamless and the balance between power and economy is excellent. The car has a very premium feel. The ride is smooth and steering feels consistent. The vented seats work great, and the climate control is strong and flexible. Back seat comfort is high and plenty of room for two passengers with a car seat. Trunk is sizable. I opted not to get the Ultimate, but sometimes wish I had for a better touchscreen, the panoramic roof and some more safety bells and whistles. A few nits: my driver's side window will freeze half way up and head back down; sometimes it takes a few cycles of up and down to get it to close properly. The Limited (no Ultimate) touchscreen is SMALL and doesn't pack a lot of info. The clock and compass are far out of normal drivers sight lines. And I haven't been able to get the driver's seat consistently comfortable. Overall very happy, and would definitely recommend. I chose this over a Mazda 6, which was a close second

2016 Sonata Hybrid
Overall, the car exceeds my expectations. Being a hybrid, I expected slow a climb to reach the speed desired. I was shocked. It has power. The only negative I can say is about the cabin exterior sound quality. The car is very quiet. I can pull up to a car next to me at the light had hear everything being said in the other car. Sometimes even driving down the highway, another car will make a noise that gets your attention. Going what was that, then listening close you determine the source. My old Jeep roared and you heard nothing else. A new world of noises. It drives nice. I have not owned it long. Not even had the first oil change yet. I would like to have the option of power seats in the SE model. Currently, you can only get that with the Limited model and Leather seats.

No spare tire!
We test drove the Hyundai Sonata hybrid, the Ford Fusion hybrid & the Toyota Prius V hybrid. We would have bought the Sonata except for the fact that it did not have a spare tire nor any place to store a spare tire. The battery for the hybrid is in the floor of the truck so there is no space for a spare. That is the sole reason we did not buy this car. It was going to b my wife's car & I did not feel comfortable, and she did not feel safe, driving around w/ only a fix-a-flat. Turns out none of the 2016 Hyundais have spare tires. This was a strategy to save them a lit bit on weight & a little bit on cost. U can buy a donut spare from the dealer for $250-300 but whereas the other Hyundai models have a designated place to put it, the hybrid does not. We own a 2006 Sonata & luv it. We wanted the better gas mileage & would have upgraded had it not been for this issue. The Edmunds expert review does not mention this. We bought the Prius V in the end.

Great fuel economy... in ideal weather
Overall, this is a really nice car, especially for the price. However, I bought it for its fuel economy, and that's unreliable. It can lose up to 15-20% of its capability to save fuel if you have to run the seat warmers and/or climate control for an extended period of time.

Gotta Love it !!
Love this car...great interior and exterior fit and finish, mileage is out of this world! Pearlcoat paint job is flawless, and great body lines...car gets high marks for styling. I could only spot two areas that could use improvement. Tire noise is a little excessive in the SE trim...higher trim packages are equipped with better tires. Brakes are a little touchy, but this is pretty common on all hybrids. This is an exceptional car with many options available, and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone. Compare prices, looks and fuel savings, it really is a no brained. Buy the Hyundai...did I mention the fantastic warranty?

Overall pretty good.
I've gotten over 60mpg on warm days when going no more than 5 over the limit (around 40mpg when it's freezing). I've had one issue with this car though, but that may be because I bought it uses, and it was rear ended before I bought it. The issue is that the hybrid system component sent me a warning indicator, and as I type this, it's at the dealership being looked at. They say it could be a hybrid coolant pump leak, but aren't sure. I don't know whether it was caused by the accident or if it's defective. I haven't had this car a month yet.

Asian Mercedes
Was in MBZ for many years. Became interested in Sonata design in 2011. Liked what I saw. In 2014 finally made the switch and bought a new hybrid LTD. amazing bulletproof vehicle. Recently traded in and bought a 2017 CPO hybrid LTD. truly the finest automobiles in that price range. Still love Benz but Hyundai, in my opinion, has made the LTD sonata their version of a MBZ

2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid
I love my car so much. I've looked at the Toyota and Honda. I just like the feel and look of the Sonata much better. I've had it for almost 3 weeks now and I travel at least 1 hour a day to and from work. I just filled the gas tank and it wasn't even empty yet. The look and feel just can't be beat. I urge anyone looking for a hybrid car to take a look at the Sonata.

Best car I've owned in 50 years
What's left to say? My first rattle trap of a car was a '58 Chevy. Since then I've owned Ford, GM, Dodge/Ram, Triumph (talk about love/hate!), BMW/Mini, Mazda, Toyota, Nissan, and Lexus. The mid-1990s Lexus LS400 was a very good car that was at the leading edge of the industry in many ways. It does not compare to the Hyundai. The Sonata is a far cry from being at the leading edge of automotive technology but Hyundai has gotten everything right. It is the best car I've owned. Period. I wouldn't be selling it if I wasn't moving out of the US. I can't take it with me. That's OK though. I'll buy another when I get settled.

Engine failure at 16 months -47k miles
I thought I did good research before purchasing this car. What I did not do is look at consumer complaints in class action lawsuits against the engine. They settled a class action lawsuit a year I purchased my car. My car was 16 months old when the engine broken to pieces. Because I had trouble cross country oil change was over the 3700 suggested oil change miles so they would not repair my engine because my oil change on a new car was not according to recommendation. Where she at when the warranty decided not to cover it they jacked up the price for repairs another $3,000 to a hefty $8,000. When I research my 16 month car now had a market value of $9,000. What's worse then these terrible engines that will break apart is Hyundai look for a reason not to warranty their product. before I even made it to the dealership the guy on the phone told me it was probably rats in my engine would not be covered. They made their determination and then destroyed all the evidence and gave me back my engine parts in the trunk the $8,000 bill. My $30,000 car has a retail value of $9,000 16 months after I purchase it with a broken engine that cost $8,000. Do not buy a Hyundai. Their extended warranty is a rip-off. It is designed to give them loopholes not to pay in small print. What new engine using synthetic oil can't make it ten thousand miles without a oil change without breaking up into pieces? Coincidence that is the same thing as a class action lawsuit that was closed the air about my car? This was a worst purchasing decision I have ever made.

A/C compressor needs replacing already
My car is a 2016. I bought the car used in 2017 so a little over 1 yr of me owing the car the A/C compressor needs to be replaced per the Dealership. $2100 I believe this should be covered by Hyundai since the car is only 2 yr old. The compressor shouldn't be going out this early. I have a 1998 Ford and my AC is still going strong only having to put Freon in it once. I will never buy a Hyundai again.

Best car we've ever owned
Good mileage, remarkably quiet and great handling (after installing Michelin tires), exceptionally comfortable even for 4 large men, auto hold and adaptive cruise control are terrific. Previous cars were Camrys and Volvos, both presented problems before 50K miles. 90K miles on the Sonata with zero problems except normal replacement items, and it drives like new. Interior and paint have stood up very well except for the paint on the spoiler. We have no desire to buy another car and intend to drive this one indefinitely. UPDATE: Our last new car before this one was a 2002 Toyota Camry XLE. It developed 3 major problems before it hit the mileage we have on the Sonata (90K) and was burning so much oil that at 135K, we had to get rid of it. Very disappointing. The Sonata handles better, is much faster, quieter, has more modern features (as one might expect) is standing up to wear and tear very well (still looks new inside and out) and hasn't developed a single problem. It reeks of quality and is the most well built car we've ever owned. Last year, the company wrote to tell us the 100K drivetrain warranty has been extended to 150K. Not sure why but we're not complaining. The hybrid battery is warranteed for life. This car's a keeper. April 24th, 2025. Still enjoying our Sonata with 95000 miles on it and zero problems, not even warranty issues (although we got an extended bumper-to-bumper warranty, which wasn't necessary.) My wife drove it to Mexico yesterday and encountered a surprise. One corner on the highway was much tighter than she expected and she hit it at too high a speed. Because the Sonata Hybrid has almost perfect front to rear weight distribution, it didn't understeer as the tires screamed through the curve. As a result, she was able to sail through the turn, albeit at the edge of tire adhesion. If this car had suffered from the understeer of our previous car, she'd have careened off the turn in a tangent into oncoming traffic. The fact that the stock suspension handled this so well after 95K miles is another testament to the car's quality. I wonder if the new Sonatas are built to the same high standards.

Mileage not as advertised
I am the original owner of a 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited model. In 25,000 miles of gentle driving on eco mode I have not been able to get over 38 mpg ever. The car says 38 mpg but when I actually do the math with my gas receipt it is 1 1/2 to 2mpg less than what the car measures. I am very disappointed, this is my first and definitely last Hyundai car. I hate liars! Update: After an oil change in January of 2021, my mileage briefly went up to 44mpg. This lasted about two tanks of gas. We are back ever since to 38mpg max. I asked the dealership what they did during that oil change and they claimed they didn’t do anything to help the mileage. I’m just accepting that this car can’t do what Hyundai says it should be able to do.
